at around 10:00 I had a revelation (if you could call it that) and I've decided to have a ted talk == below, random ramblings about what's lately on my mind about overwatch, purely my own observations (as mostly an ana otp LMAO) == I feel like I'm playing well, my mechanics are definitely above average (sleeping lucios, etc), BUT, how come I still don't know what to improve on after more than a thousand games? I am consistently the one dying the least, I know I have to hit my nades (instead of whiffing them), use corners, push in when no one's around, pull out when they push me, adjust my playstyle (nades, sleeps, positioning) depending on what the enemy picks.... shooting widows whenever I can,,, yet, I am in low plat to gold I know I am still shit, probably. that's one side of the argument. the other one, "my revelation", quote you: "the game is balanced around gold players". "they buffed sojourn because the average gold player can't hit a shot" -- to stimulate them hitting people and killing them. flashy. (dopamine start) that's exactly what the top500 guys do! the ones that I should look up in a competitive game. and rightfully so, those are the best people, the hit stuff and kill others non-stop, HEY! look at me, I am also hitting shots and killing others! I AM SO GOOD. (dopmanine end) this goes back to your breakdown of effort+reward plus floor+ceiling. now visualize that curve over the ranks, from bronze to best-of-the-world, and the best effort to reward ratio lies somewhere in gold, since they balance around gold players. balance exists to shift the meta, if something is too busted. the effect will be most noticable in their targeted rank they balance around. assuming the game is in a theoretically perfectly balanced state, the impact of changes should be negligable, probably especially for ranks below where they balance around, and have the most impact in, you guessed it, the ranks they balance around. (telephone rings, some developer) hello, I am going to balance around the average player. (telephone hangs up) oh-oh, now you've introduced a weird situation: players ranked ABOVE where the balance is centered around. remember, the impact of balance changes should be felt less the lower you are ranked AND because the most impact these will have is around WHERE they balance, you will probably ALSO feel it LESS the higher you climb. the closer a player is to the rank-to-be-balanced, the quicker they have to start to abide by the rules -- what are the rules? -- the meta. if the balance changes impact the game drastically, the quicker and more explosive the meta shifts. if the best reward for effort is literally in gold, you have LESS TO LEARN from diamon, even less top500, and very little the higher you go, since you already have most of the reward-to-effort in the bag. (if you know what I mean - that's basically what I concluded at 10:00) now, who learns what? let's list from gold upwards: - a player in gold will learn more from top500 than a plat will from 500 - a player in gold will learn more from plat than a plat will from diamond - ... - a player in GM will learn more from top500 than a top500 will from pro-play and now, let's include below gold: - a player in bronze WILL LEARN THE MOST FROM GOLD (the rank they balance around) - if said player one day is in gold, he will very likely learn LESS than all of what he did to reach gold exaggerating that results in the conclusion: only good players should be good at the game, but as it is now, even mediocre players are good at it (not even "good" in quotation marks, I really mean GOOD), and good players being slightly better than good (again, exaggerated) this balance philosophy does make it weird for even the top500 and above, since the probably will play what's meta in GOLD but they have to just play it slightly better. the higher you are, the faster you have to adjust. this is probably why I really don't know where I should even improve at this point and it's just depressing if the top players played a difficult to master hero, you could at least learn from them and look at various points where you can improve upon, but again, the most you can learn from is probably up to the rank where they balance around... I also FEEL like the game is VERY and EXTREMELY competitive - even if wrong in all ways (as described above, and because I really don't care to play too much right now). maybe this has something to do about the fact that it is, in fact, balanced around gold. this is not backed by any mathematical or scientifical fact checks or anything, just based on my pure intuition :)
I remember when they added a 1-3-2 in Overwatch 1 as a “test” and it was so negatively received. People hated the pressure of being a singular tank in that format and having all that responsibility on them. I can’t believe they actually ended up doing it to tanks, in a 5v5 format.
People don’t talk in open queue either, i have no idea why y’all are banning 5v5 and not the fact that you’re chat locked below a certain endorsement level and you can now get chat banned and timed out for voice comms.
i literally got comm banned for 2 weeks just screwing around in chat on quickplay with my friends in a 5 stack. didnt say anything offensive, didnt attack anyone, didnt even talk directly to anyone. just memed in the chat and had a good time with friends. I will never speak in overwatch voice or text chat ever again
That sucks. I have lvl 5 endorsement (who cares) but got banned in comms for 2 weeks because some guy was upset that I said I wasn't helping him shoot down pharah as a soldier because I wasn't getting enough k1lls. He was playing mccree, so I told him very politely in voice to take care of her then, she's all yours, I'm switching off to something that gets k1lls (I was basically DOING WHAT HE ASKED ME TO DO, and I did get way more k1lls as reaper), and he reported me.
3:26 Player fluxes after the enemy sigma used rock, player dodged sleep dart, player is about to get value, the ana gets life griped, the enemy sigma gets instantly healed back to full, player closes the game, opens marvel rivals
Legit, the card system was a thing that they never should’ve removed. Besides that, it’s crazy how the competitive integrity for this game has been completely destroyed. It’s almost not even worth trying in ranked sometimes. :/
Overwatch is the biggest nostalgia prison ever. Its a constant cycle of gaslighting yourself and coping to go back to 2016, when everything was "simpler" and we didn't have all the worries that we had now. Blizzard teases its players by holding that nostalgia over them like meat over a starving street dog, while luring them into a gas chamber to suffocate in hyper marketed, predatory, corporatized bullshit.
I've been playing for 8 years, never once got a suspension in Overwatch 1 despite talking WAYYY more in vc and tc... but in Overwatch 2 I've been suspended 3 times, most recently for A WHOLE MONTH. I'm on the last step before account closing. This is despicable for a player who's dumped thousands of hours into their favorite game, being near perma-banned on the basis of calling someone a bad player, or saying the f-word in text. Idk who's really in charge over their, but I seriously want to quit.
Do the same as me: i quited last year february, and i didn't regret it. I got also a month suspension after saying cry to a ego player who couldn't afford to lose agains't me. I spended countless hours on this account as i started in 2018, never penalized for anything. Yet in OW2 for the smallest thing you get suspended or perma banned for anything. If i didn't spended over €200 on this account for PS Plus passes and got so many cosmetics back in the day i shoulnd't care, but the account means something to me and don't want it to go to waste.
I have a friend who gets banned pretty frequently. I tell her to just turn her chat off because she keeps talking mad shit for no reason (she is very bad and our other friends and I inflated her ego by carrying her up to diamond and master). But at the same time she goes out of her way to anger people enough to slightly push the boundaries and then she reports them, or if they have a slightly inappropriate name she reports the. It’s the weirdest most toxic behavior I’ve seen from any of my friends and she doesn’t exhibit that sort of psychotic tendency in any other aspect of her life. It’s something that just happens to people when they play overwatch too much.
She sounds like the exact kind of player that I hated when I played this game. People would go out of their way to say some toxic and antagonistic crap in the chat, then they report you when you retaliate. Just immature and unfun
For me OW was always anti-social. I distinctly remember because I moved from CSGO to OW and in CSGO, it didn't matter if you were silver 1 or supreme master first class you were expected to be in the voice chat. Anyone who wasn't got LITERALLY bullied even if you weren't talking you but could hear voice coms on so you can hear callouts. When I switched to OW, it was a rarity to just have someone in the VC, not even talking just actually having it turned on so they can hear coms and this was the case no matter what rank I went to. The main one I see a big difference in OW2 is noone text chats anymore or talks shit to each other because as you say the terrible report system. Apparently we're allowed to literally murder each other but if you say a swear then breast milk Blizzard will swing the ban hammer round.
Bro.. I bring up the end game card system all the time, and unanimously (randoms in OW chat) agrees that it should come back and no one has any idea why it was even removed. To be expected from a game that didn't even have a "on fire" system compared to OW1.
ow beta tester and ow1 pre order player here, haven't been able to enjoy this game for years so I've just not played it. came back for the ow classic event and had a ton of fun with mates that also haven't played in years. out of curiosity I queued for 5v5 quickplay and it was just awful lmao. how have they fumbled this game to this extent. I've been somewhat keeping up with ow youtubers over the years and I'm just seeing the frustration and lamentation over what could've been take it's toll on people over time it's crazy marvel rivals barely runs on my pc, the engine is dog water and the game is full of bugs but it STILL manages to be way WAY more fun than modern overwatch. blizzard should be ashamed of themselves lmao
i genuinely never understood the point of having a mute feature if u ban everyone anyway, let people say whatever they want and let anyone who doesnt like it mute them
I wanted to add, i think part of it is also that the game doesn't give you an incentive to grind hard and really climb up. So therefore, players are just going through the motions. And when the game ends, they just go next. And they'll repeat that pattern over and over and over again.
This is what happens when you coddle your playerbase that you over moderate communication, you effectively make an anti social game. Why bother trying to talk when I risk a ban? Remove all the potential moments to talk like post game chat on cards? It boils down to making sure some players dont get their feelings hurt that ruins the rest of the game for everyone else when a literal option to disable mature chat and disabling match chat exists yet still have this big brother moderation system.
I completely stand by this. My first Overwatch account got banned in 2019 because I talked too much trash. Fine, lesson learned-so I made a new account and toned it down. Guess what? Got suspended again, not for words, but for daring to play a character people didn’t like. Fast-forward to now, and I’m slapped with a communication ban just for calling out nonsense. The Overwatch report system is a joke-giving way too much control to emotionally fragile players who can't handle the heat of competitive gaming.
When i think of the people who created the ban system or want the strict policing in overwatch. i can picture the player base as a whole from the video with the girl at Costco who cut the line wearing a d.va backpack and overwatch shirt. Yelling at the top of their lungs that their a victim because she was notified that she cut.
I never ever stay in a lobby after a match. The millisecond I've won or lost I'm already exiting the match and queuing for the next one. If you aren't super high rank you won't ever see that lobby again
rein zarya back in the day had a symbiotic passive where both were in voice communicating everything and other teammates would join in for the important abilities... it was bliss
I dont understand their overly sensitive approach to toxicity. We have the ability to disable chat, comms or filter swearing. If you can't handle it, then you can turn it off. Yet you can also get banned for this stuff?? Games where people are actually speaking are always the most fun and interesting, I'd hate to think people get scared off or silenced because they got a little toxic once or twice, or god forbid said a swear word.
Blizzard: Literally Builds a Swear Filter into the Text Chat Mechanic Blizzard a Year Ago For Some Reason: Swearing Has Always Been a Bannable Offense *Permanently Bans You For Saying "This Game is Sht"*
I fucking hate that they've somehow clonflated "toxicity" (ie ruining the game for others, being a menace, etc) with "swearing in chat". People who aren't toxic curse all the fucking time, that should NOT be where the bar is. The amount of warnings I've gotten because my natural speech pattern just includes a buncha swearwords is insane. I'm not a toxic chatter and I pride myself on that and yet I've almost been slapped by the banhammer twice bc I said "You're fucking amazing" to my supports instead of "you're amazing". Imagine that.
I basically only play Overwatch for Genji, however he is so hard to make work and its more of a chore than fun. I loved classic because it reminded me of the glory days where you could pop off with any character if you were skilled. Now ive switched over to Rivals and am having waaay more fun playing Iron Fist and Black Panther, its just such a breath of fresh air. However, even Rivals wont be quite as hype as peak Overwatch. Its very sad.
What I enjoy most playing competitive OW is getting into a team where everyone is comfortable using voice comm, which rarely ever happens. I wish it had an option to play only with teammates who use voice comms in competitive.
People don't talk in voice chat because of AI chat moderation. You're never more than one curse word away from having your $70 purchase repossessed by the developer.
I got banned just for calling Venture "she" in the early day of Venture released. I was trying to tell that "Venture is one" in vc to my team and got banned. Cool, I guess.
I got banned every season for a month once the auto bann system was put in place. Now I'm permanently banned. All for speaking competitively in competitive. Not cussing or telling people anything more then how to win and to group up.
in overwatch and rivals i always say hello in team or match chat and see if people wanna just talk about random crap in the start or middle of the game always reminds me that im playing with real players and honestly i noticed that a lot of people seem to enjoy it and find it fun so i keep doing it after all, whats the point of being toxic when both teams are fighting over which hero eats the most hamburgers (obviously kiriko) though i will note that i feel a bit more safe to say stuff on rivals since on OW people are mega afraid of the chat bans
this video is exactly how i feel man ): especially the end. nobody talks about the social aspects of this game and what we lost, rather what they took from us in the swap to ow2. real shame
i think one big part of it could be the big female player base of overwatch. women dont want to speak in vc because its just an invitation for sexism and hatred, so its easier for them to speak in text chat because they dont have to deal with being sexualised or insulted based on their gender. im not a woman but im gay and have a very noticeable 'gay voice' lol, which opens me up to a lot of similar problems of being insulted and people being homophobic to me. unfortunately i dont think theres a lot that can be done about this because this is an issue in all of gaming, and in fact overwatch is one of the better games and is more accepting than the other games i play. but the big female player base could be a big reason.
I would say 90+% of people don't flame you or say homophobic/sexist things purely on the basis that they are gay or a women. They likely trolled (Not a big deal) and the go to insult would be that they are gay or a women. I feel like if a dude with a gay voice or a women hard carrying would never get those kinda insults. It's kinda just the easiest thing to go for but they were likely gonna get flamed either way. I do get that it sucks to be attacked for who you are not how bad you are at the game tho.
@@GREED_EU i agree with this, but i think there's just a general fear of being insulted that stops a lot of people from even trying vc we've all seen those yt vids of women being told rape threats over ow voicechat, and even if it only happens in like 0.01% of matches, i think just the fear alone of people being that horrible prevents a lot of women from ever trying vc
I got muted for 2.5 weeks for saying "Heal our fu**ing Rein" to an Ana player. I've also had 2 accounts permanently banned for being "toxic", usually because supports are horrible. If I'm going to get banned over petty and stupid reasons, then I should be refunded the money I spent in the past. I never was, so I quit supporting Blizzard. I became less invested mentally and stopped talking when Overwatch 2 came out. This is the outcome because Blizzard never changed. Thank goodness for Marvel Rivals.
Another Greed W, I wish more people talked about this problem because losing the tilted teammates screaming on voice chat really took a bit of the soul of this game.
Losing looking for group, going to 5v5, and all the bs surrounding how hard the report system is towards “toxicity.” As a tank main on console, I had a blast finding a group every night to game with, I met some real friends through that system too. Losing it in 5v5 made me realize how isolated and alone you feel solo tanking. You can’t group that easily and no one speaks in chat. However, you certainly feel more toxicity as a solo tank, that’s for sure. Thankfully, a friend I made on OW 1 still games with me and we duo a lot but shits depressing out here. I miss the content drought of 2020 :(
Marvel rivals doesn’t have this issue really. Currently gm-1 and team chat is not only more common but also fucking hilarious. Getting an iron man otp role playing in chat every 5 games is fantastic
I've been in dozens of games with a full team chat where nobody talks until the end of the game to give grief to the poor guy who wasn't getting enough help (peel, helping with a tank kill, etc..) from the rest of us the entire game and they finally go quiet. or the 21-22 junkrat is flaming me for not keeping him alive in the middle of the enemy team
Should bring back player cards because it gave recognition to people who didn’t get play of the game. Also, while you’re on that screen, you should be able to stay there and talk to your team for as long as you want.
At the start of the game, I used to say some lame joke, and people would often pick up on it and expand, and we'd have fun. Sometimes it even let us make a comeback. So satisfying. Now I'm afraid to say anything, because a couple of times someone started lecturing me and threw the game.
I quit communicating on overwatch when I got suspended for giving it back to the assholes in the game. Can't even defend yourself in Blizzard games. You just gotta take it and report lol f that I quit.
Tbh once Blizz started saying that they were record all comms and would ban you if you were being mean I noticed comms stopped being used. People dont want to lose their entire account for calling someone bad.
I've found that overwatch has the single most restrictive chat of any game I've ever played. Saying anything that's not objective praise will eventually end up giving you a chat restriction, even just banter or very mild trash talk. Here's a fun game, whenever you kill someone type a Team Fortress 2 domination voiceline and see how long it takes to get banned. (It'll be 3 games minimum) Feels like now blizzard is so anti fun in their own game that even using chat feels as bad or pointless as playing tank. Another thing is the "its balanced around the pro players" argument falls flat cause blizzards balance team just fkin sucks and cant balance period, pro players didnt want the attempted rammatra rework, they dont want orisa or mauga strong. The devs are legitimately just too dumb to realize theyre repeating the same cycle of shit balance and forcing orisa/mauga metas.
I have been using triggerbot in ow for 6months now and i have not been banned yet almost everyday people call out my cheats yet still no ban but a year ago i got banned from ow just because i told someone that he plays like sht
Ever since switching to single tank format it feels as all the hate and toxicity is aimed at the tank. Going on about 6 months now I've disabled team chat and text chat. Made the game for bearable.
You nailed it! This game needs 6v6 comp with bans. Party finder reintroduced. But this Dev team takes forever for any decision. Ping and wide groups are the only positive features added to OW2
This is true I don’t think I’ve gotten a toxic game in literally like 6 months. Kinda wish I would tbh it’s more entertaining than when nobody is talking and just flaming in text chat
my most recent suspension was due to someone telling match chat i called them the f slur (i didnt say it but they did) and the entire lobby mass reported me and i got a month ban, since i got back i turned all my text chats off and only join team voice chat to listen. the banning problem is just too cringe now.
This is a problem in a lot of MP games nowadays. They endlessly censor comms because they don’t want anyone to get offended or trash talked. In a competitive multiplayer game, god forbid.
Jesus. Seeing this makes me glad I quit the game in 2019 when it was at its best. This is just a sad state for a game which I remember made me much more social a person and hard comm every game until reaching GM. I made a lot of great friends and seeing become an absolute snorefest of toxic positivity is extremely sad. Its like seeing the party animal having become a homeless bum or a depressed dad
Many of my friends on OW1 left before OW2; and they dont like what OW has become. I miss comms. I got into competitive right before Brig dropped, I became a Rein main, and GOATS was a fun time for me. We used to talk in chat. At least a tank and support. Today, I'm alone in chat. Tank was already lonely in 5v5, but with how much its solo focused, its almost depressing.
Any rank is exaggerated. I played in bronze to plat in ow 1 from end of season 2 to the end and most of the time people weren't talking in bronze, silver and gold. It got only noticably better in Plat.
im not expert at this but at the end of each ow2 match, there is the requeue with the same teammates but the ending is so fast i can barely even click it like not even enough time asking oh u want to queue again, i have to get out of a game, chat with them and they might not accept my friend request to chat but i just wanted to requeue not even necessary freind or they are in another match already so i cant do anything and omg the sojourn balance part, it reminded me so much of orisa, when they remove her fall off and she dominated lobbies, they nerf her survivability cooldown rotations but not her fall off like she felt so annnoying to fight against from afar but she feels sucks to play? or from what i can remember like why wont they just revert the og change that broke the game
I am the only one using voice lines to make the game funny and varied, using voice lines as a combos. My favorite is with Mercy and her piece of cake. Juno with her future of scaredy cat(no heart because it is in the pass). As for voice comms, less than 5% of they speak. Maybe ranked they speak more but i have forgotten it. Sadly, OW is the only game with lines, pings and voice lines that have combo potential. Trying to tell them over the mic, "fall back, wait for the tank" and then seeing them rush in and die, is hilarious, even more when they complain afterwards
I agree about Blizz's attempt to balance for everyone. There's no way you can make bronze timmy have the same impact as PGE or JJonak. Blizz tried to do it all and it's just impossible.
I had recently started using the chat, about 2 months ago, and it was a miserable experience, we were in a quick match, but we were losing, I was the tank and had fewer deaths and more kills than all the other members, but then, one of the dps players playing genji, started saying that we were losing because of me, he cursed me several times, (in fact, he had the fewest kills and the most deaths), anyway, then I decided to respond by saying "at least I wasn't jumping like a monkey without helping the team", I didn't know and to this day I don't know who that genji player was or who he looks like, I have no idea, but just because I said "monkey", it was enough for him to send a message to the entire chat saying that I was racist, at the end of the game, which in fact, WE WON BECAUSE OF ME, after some time, I couldn't play for a while, I simply stopped talking in these chats
Balancing for casual is not the problem. Pro's will work around it if you're a pro. Its the fact it was a social game that got hollowed out from the inside. Its a shell, we gamers can feel that. Blizzard use a AI for its report system so you can get players permanent banned for typing gg. Just have to tell the report system gg means something vulgar or say its hate speech. No joke its so easy. No original devs are working on the game, its just idiot kids who want to be dev's but play activist on the weakends as if its larping. its bad. I sti'll talk in game, rarely find some to chat it up. 90%of players are in gold. I would rank up past gold but it rapidly becomes boring an quite the high you go unless you have friends. Also my age players a factor im 38, I have already seen the top of being top 100 back in the mid 90's-2000's. It was not worth it. I give it all up for someone to love or to have friends. Its the realization non of it had value the many notice now more the older the gaming generation gets. The punishment for free speech on games also kill's multiply player games fast. that stupid crap people say online was why it was fun to scream an yell with abandonment was freeing. it was vulgar an racist an out right unhinge alot of the time but it got that toxic crap out of your system so you can be normal person in real life. Also it was funny sometime's censorship, fake forced diversity for quick buck as blizzard has done has only damaged gaming as a whole, caused more harm to natural diversity. Now we have marvel rivals. Either blizzard get's better or goes under. Its all thats left.
I've been trying to climb out of platinum and I'm doing pretty well, but the coms even if you find a group on Xbox is people who are cool and talk, but there's virtually no communication pertaining to the game. Getting high diamond in Overwatch 1 was all about comboing ultimates, coordinating pushes, targeting people, but above all else communicating these things. That has stopped ever since a year ago for me, I can't find anyone who will have good in game communication about how to coordinate and win, it's pretty dead. The communication is "oh good kill bro", "oh man we lost that, well we have a couple ultimates for this next fight", or (insert indirect way of asking someone to switch to a different character out of fear of offending someone cause it seems like anyone will crash out at the slightest criticism)
Even if VC moderation might be the reason for some people to get quiet, all remotely competetitive games grow anti-social over time. This has a lot of reasons, but its usually a tied to ingame toxicity. Im one of those gamers who usually keeps anger to myself or voice it in a polite way, i dont need to worry about getting banned, but I still dont use VC anymore, because its usually an invitation for toxic individuals venting off their toxicity without providing any value to the team, thats why I usually use discord with friends only.
Totally agree, plus, text and voice both turned intensely toxic just this season. For the first time since launch I gave up and stopped joining chat. Chat wasn’t great in OW1 compared to more social games like WoW - and Blizz killed social in that too - but OW2 removed what little opportunity for social there was. With this season it’s tipped into a totally negative feature and you are far better not joining, because the only things you will experience are misdirected rage, bad takes, racial/sexual slurs, and knee-jerk abuse. If someone talks it’s most likely to be racist slurs or trying to tilt their own team before the match even begins. I don’t know if those people are getting banned, or why things are so much worse this season, but it has been a distinct shift. There were always trolls on chat but this is something new and worse.
U literally can not speak or you will get banned. I said Idiots get on point and was banned. The word Idiot should not be a ban-able offense. I never even got a warning in all my time playing Overwatch 1.
People think they balance around the top? Bruh that couldn't be any further from the truth. The game would probably be a lot better if they actually chose to do that
I am not fully sure I would say this is an Overwatch problem, I play quite a few FPS games and I don’t hear people talk in VC that much at all. I would say it’s more of a culture shift than Overwatch.
Playing this game without friends is torture. You will almost always play against toxic quickplay stacks, smurf stacks, or those who sweat. As a regular solo queue player it really brings a lot of negativity because if you show good results in a match, you will just start being harassed by stack players, tunneling, solo ulting you, just because you hurt their ego by proving that you are a better player. Also, one time in quick play, a duo of Doomfist and Kiriko on my team made friends with enemy Wrecking Ball, although I think they knew each other. And after I tried to play normally and shoot the Hamster, he started chasing me and constantly killing me at spawn, while Kiriko just refused to heal me and only did emotes. I was playing as a support and could do nothing, it was a perfect map for the Hamster - many corners, convenient healpacks. After I asked in the chat to report Kiriko for refusing to heal me, everyone laughed and reported me, after that I got a chat ban for two weeks. However, I did not receive any notifications that my report had worked. Because of the idiotic report system, many innocent solo players are being punished for trying to get justice because they play against toxic stacks. While Blizzard continues to grow toxicity in the game by adding penalties for leaving quickplay(when even Kaplan was against it) and simplifying the report system by adding a report button to the tab. It turns out that if a stack trolls you, you can't leave the match and you HAVE to endure humiliation from stupid children or idiot adults who have nothing better to do in life. Anyway. I really appreciate you saying what you think. Because in the Overwatch community it is common to defend the game despite the completely wrong things it does. I have a lot of experience communicating on the official forum and as a game developer and a person who has studied the patents of matchmaking EOMM and SBMM and played many games which use it, I tried to convey to people that with an extremely high probability the matchmaking in Ow2 is completely rigged, but instead I got a lot of trolling, deletion of my threads on which I spent hours of my life, and all because of troll reports... You understand that even on the forum you can be silenced simply based on NUMBERS of reports.
I am fairly sure much of what they say about why they did something is just a complete lie purposed to deceive the audience. Me and my friends looked at the end of match cards all the time, and we couldn't have been the only ones.
at around 10:00 I had a revelation (if you could call it that) and I've decided to have a ted talk
== below, random ramblings about what's lately on my mind about overwatch, purely my own observations (as mostly an ana otp LMAO) ==
I feel like I'm playing well, my mechanics are definitely above average (sleeping lucios, etc), BUT, how come I still don't know what to improve on after more than a thousand games? I am consistently the one dying the least, I know I have to hit my nades (instead of whiffing them), use corners, push in when no one's around, pull out when they push me, adjust my playstyle (nades, sleeps, positioning) depending on what the enemy picks.... shooting widows whenever I can,,, yet, I am in low plat to gold
I know I am still shit, probably. that's one side of the argument. the other one, "my revelation", quote you: "the game is balanced around gold players".
(dopmanine end)
this goes back to your breakdown of effort+reward plus floor+ceiling. now visualize that curve over the ranks, from bronze to best-of-the-world, and the best effort to reward ratio lies somewhere in gold, since they balance around gold players.
balance exists to shift the meta, if something is too busted. the effect will be most noticable in their targeted rank they balance around. assuming the game is in a theoretically perfectly balanced state, the impact of changes should be negligable, probably especially for ranks below where they balance around, and have the most impact in, you guessed it, the ranks they balance around.
(telephone rings, some developer) hello, I am going to balance around the average player. (telephone hangs up)
oh-oh, now you've introduced a weird situation: players ranked ABOVE where the balance is centered around. remember, the impact of balance changes should be felt less the lower you are ranked AND because the most impact these will have is around WHERE they balance, you will probably ALSO feel it LESS the higher you climb.
the closer a player is to the rank-to-be-balanced, the quicker they have to start to abide by the rules -- what are the rules? -- the meta. if the balance changes impact the game drastically, the quicker and more explosive the meta shifts.
if the best reward for effort is literally in gold, you have LESS TO LEARN from diamon, even less top500, and very little the higher you go, since you already have most of the reward-to-effort in the bag. (if you know what I mean - that's basically what I concluded at 10:00)
now, who learns what? let's list from gold upwards:
- a player in gold will learn more from top500 than a plat will from 500
- a player in gold will learn more from plat than a plat will from diamond
- ...
- a player in GM will learn more from top500 than a top500 will from pro-play
and now, let's include below gold:
- a player in bronze WILL LEARN THE MOST FROM GOLD (the rank they balance around)
- if said player one day is in gold, he will very likely learn LESS than all of what he did to reach gold
exaggerating that results in the conclusion: only good players should be good at the game, but as it is now, even mediocre players are good at it (not even "good" in quotation marks, I really mean GOOD), and good players being slightly better than good (again, exaggerated)
this balance philosophy does make it weird for even the top500 and above, since the probably will play what's meta in GOLD but they have to just play it slightly better. the higher you are, the faster you have to adjust.
this is probably why I really don't know where I should even improve at this point and it's just depressing
if the top players played a difficult to master hero, you could at least learn from them and look at various points where you can improve upon, but again, the most you can learn from is probably up to the rank where they balance around...

The single tank format also incentivizes an incredible amount of toxicity against tanks.
Yea when you hop on vc, it becomes 1v4 sometimes
tank=emotional pillow.
I became a tank to protect and empower my teammates. However, in the end they were my worst enemies
Voice chat may be recorded to investigate and verify reports of disruptive behavior.
i literally got comm banned for 2 weeks just screwing around in chat on quickplay with my friends in a 5 stack. didnt say anything offensive, didnt attack anyone, didnt even talk directly to anyone. just memed in the chat and had a good time with friends.

Blizzard teases its players by holding that nostalgia over them like meat over a starving street dog, while luring them into a gas chamber to suffocate in hyper marketed, predatory, corporatized bullshit.
because pro play esports bs that prioritizes pro play and competitive over casual play
@@mr.froggy2899I'm sorry but are you telling people how to have fun?
I knew this game was doomed when they got rid of global chat.
The games toxicity definitely lead to the report system being so extreme; i remember being doxxed over games, it was honestly pathetic
After getting suspender for a month for saying "diff" I now just mute everything before the match begins
The "stay with team" feature is like a qte. Sometimes I want to use it but only have a few seconds to press it before the potg comes up and it's gone.

I've been somewhat keeping up with ow youtubers over the years and I'm just seeing the frustration and lamentation over what could've been take it's toll on people over time it's crazy
marvel rivals barely runs on my pc, the engine is dog water and the game is full of bugs but it STILL manages to be way WAY more fun than modern overwatch. blizzard should be ashamed of themselves lmao

i genuinely never understood the point of having a mute feature if u ban everyone anyway, let people say whatever they want and let anyone who doesnt like it mute them
I wanted to add, i think part of it is also that the game doesn't give you an incentive to grind hard and really climb up.
Did you know that Bad Business on Roblox is not anti-social?
Yelling at the top of their lungs that their a victim because she was notified that she cut.
i miss find a group because there was an annual overwatch edge-fest where we would goon on mic all month 😭

Blizzard: Literally Builds a Swear Filter into the Text Chat Mechanic
Blizzard a Year Ago For Some Reason: Swearing Has Always Been a Bannable Offense *Permanently Bans You For Saying "This Game is Sht"*
You just reminded me when I got warned for abusive chat for telling my team "gg boys. They suck"
Rivals is greasy shit and people only slobber all over it because overwatch is being run by morons actively trying to ruin it
What I enjoy most playing competitive OW is getting into a team where everyone is comfortable using voice comm, which rarely ever happens.
Cool, I guess.

after all, whats the point of being toxic when both teams are fighting over which hero eats the most hamburgers (obviously kiriko)
though i will note that i feel a bit more safe to say stuff on rivals since on OW people are mega afraid of the chat bans
this video is exactly how i feel man ): especially the end. nobody talks about the social aspects of this game and what we lost, rather what they took from us in the swap to ow2. real shame
Overwatch 2: Less is Less
i think one big part of it could be the big female player base of overwatch. women dont want to speak in vc because its just an invitation for sexism and hatred, so its easier for them to speak in text chat because they dont have to deal with being sexualised or insulted based on their gender. im not a woman but im gay and have a very noticeable 'gay voice' lol, which opens me up to a lot of similar problems of being insulted and people being homophobic to me.
unfortunately i dont think theres a lot that can be done about this because this is an issue in all of gaming, and in fact overwatch is one of the better games and is more accepting than the other games i play. but the big female player base could be a big reason.
@@GREED_EU i agree with this, but i think there's just a general fear of being insulted that stops a lot of people from even trying vc
we've all seen those yt vids of women being told rape threats over ow voicechat, and even if it only happens in like 0.01% of matches, i think just the fear alone of people being that horrible prevents a lot of women from ever trying vc
Got banned for a month for nothing and they didnt even give a reason 😭😭
Another Greed W, I wish more people talked about this problem because losing the tilted teammates screaming on voice chat really took a bit of the soul of this game.
I'm still irate on their, I'm holding it down for you ^^.
Defense matrix initiative was a disaster. I’ve played multiplayer games on the Wii that were more social than ow2
They also need to fire Aaron, doing absolutely no good and getting praised.
Given how aggressive Blizzard is now with banning people at times and how easy it is to abuse the report system. I'd not talk to anyone as well.
Soon, we can't say "gg" because a few ppl will find a way to be offered
Should bring back player cards because it gave recognition to people who didn’t get play of the game. Also, while you’re on that screen, you should be able to stay there and talk to your team for as long as you want.
Basically Overwatch lost a lot of it's charm through the removal of extra features that the team took for granted.
Its those interaction that make you say gg after all...
yknow, this past week ive played almost no overwatch and ive been significantly happier, i wonder why that is 🤔
At the start of the game, I used to say some lame joke, and people would often pick up on it and expand, and we'd have fun.
(It'll be 3 games minimum)
Feels like now blizzard is so anti fun in their own game that even using chat feels as bad or pointless as playing tank.
Made the game for bearable.
in my games I get either cool people who are enjoying the match win or lose or peopple who take it super serious and they have to win
Taking away searching for a group was horrible
Greed always makes me feel better about Overwatch
most matches just feel like I'm playing with and against bots on a high difficulty there's no life in the game anymore just skins and frustration.
good chance they are botting yes, player numbers very low, activision crumbling hooray.
Any rank is exaggerated. I played in bronze to plat in ow 1 from end of season 2 to the end and most of the time people weren't talking in bronze, silver and gold. It got only noticably better in Plat.
im not expert at this but at the end of each ow2 match, there is the requeue with the same teammates but the ending is so fast i can barely even click it like not even enough time asking oh u want to queue again, i have to get out of a game, chat with them and they might not accept my friend request to chat but i just wanted to requeue not even necessary freind or they are in another match already so i cant do anything
and omg the sojourn balance part, it reminded me so much of orisa, when they remove her fall off and she dominated lobbies, they nerf her survivability cooldown rotations but not her fall off like she felt so annnoying to fight against from afar but she feels sucks to play? or from what i can remember like why wont they just revert the og change that broke the game
i atribute it to half lack of social fetured and half to the current gaming landscape
Bro is kinda evil for putting a heart on all of my comments but never actually playing bb
And he did it again
If you talk you get banned
Having a format (5v5) made for popular fps games like Valorant, League of Legends, etc with game balanced for casuals = S***.

I got tired saying these things with everyone i played, now is just how the game is. Only thing i can wait from them is making OW1 a separate game,

Pharah " You are going to come(comm)" x3 times
LFG was the best thing in OW and that being taken out destroyed the game for me
Even if VC moderation might be the reason for some people to get quiet, all remotely competetitive games grow anti-social over time.
I think chats in video games are pointless they’re only used for gg or ez I always disabled them because of it
Totally agree, plus, text and voice both turned intensely toxic just this season.
I would say it’s more of a culture shift than Overwatch.
bring back general chat
The only friends I make on this game ARE IN CUSTOMS. I’ve made about 2 actual homies in the span of a year. Been playing ow for 15 months
in friendly lobbies? big mistake, enjoy all weird typos there then
I agree so much bro, u earned a sub.
I got perma'd for toxicity, gl to the people who got offended by getting called out for doing stupid mistakes. Now their game's dying.
You understand that even on the forum you can be silenced simply based on NUMBERS of reports.
it is NOT that deep gng 😭🙏
when people were screaming at each other its because people really cared man shit is sad now the game is just not good enough to warrant it anymore
I am fairly sure much of what they say about why they did something is just a complete lie purposed to deceive the audience. Me and my friends looked at the end of match cards all the time, and we couldn't have been the only ones.
I don’t think this is an overwatch problem it’s a societal problem
