They got junked 100 years ago for exactly the same reason as now. Too heavy, too expensive and crap range! but lead acid batteries of that time did not catch fire!
@@ChalcedonXXX They fell out of use 100 years ago because the lead acid batteries couldn't provide the range or the speed that the ICE could. DESPITE the fact that ICE cars are horrendous fire hazards and have been catching fire with predictable regularity ever since. Now we have the battery technology that can do the job, the electric motor is clearly the better means of propulsion. And EV batteries catch fire about 50 times LESS often than ICE cars. Isn't that great news?
robertgillingwater The most disgusting thing about motorbility finance is that its a charity and its CEO is being paid £900K per year. So called charities are often not what most people think they are
But Motability do NOT lease cars they only organise the finance and insurance deals, the customer has to decide which car they want to lease and the only person who has contact with the customer is the car salesman, so blame him, or her or they or them apparently.
@@DwaynePipes you return it to the dealership. You go into the dealership to have the old one accessed and are told how much of a 'good condition' refund you will get, which you can put towards the deposit for another car. About three months before your lease is up, they contact you to consider if you want a new car or to extend the lease (if you can). They push EV very hard - tell you that you'll be without a car if you don't take one, as the waiting list for petrol is so long.
Of course an auto salesman would, they have a terrible reputation, but Motability do NOT sell cars they simply arrange the finance. tax and insurance to help disabled people lease a car as painlessly as possible. Designed for going like a bat out of hell on the open road, actually. Sure, they're more economical than ICE cars for city driving, but what a waste of all that torque and speed not to open up your EV on the motorway. Just be careful, because they go so fast so effortlessly that you can be looking at rather a lot of points on your licence before you quite realise what you've done.

You can travel where you like with a Motability car, even abroad if you so wish. You are allowed 20,000 miles per year, and pay extra for anything over this. To say she shouldn't drive so far with a medical condition is up to the DVLA not Motability .

Amen to that, EVs wouldn't touch my car for economy. and long journeys are a breeze. Doing 70 MPH is like doing 40MPH in most cars, and I don't have to stop along the way numerous times to charge up. And the number of EVs I pass that are crawling, to eke out the charge so they don't get stranded. That's no good at all!
There is no way you can fiddle with EV touch screens and keep your eyes on the road. My wife has an MG4 company car. Touch screen and UI are total shite. Pre-authorization. Many years ago, that was called THE FLOAT. Basically, banks where I lived at the time would deposit your check, and it would take two weeks to clear and show up in your account. This gave the banks two weeks to play with your money interest free despite the fact it was cleared by a rather antiquated electronic system (around the late 1980's) that cleared your deposit in a matter of an hour or two. It took lawsuits to get banks to stop.
Hi Geoff, I use a Motability vehicle. I am changing my vehicle later this year. The dealers I'm going to are not going to try and sell me an electric car because they have told me they don't think they are very good. The vehicle I'm getting is a petrol vehicle because they do not make diesel anymore. I have never had any problems with motability. If I ever do have to have an electric vehicle, I will buy myself a secondhand car instead.
Agreed. There are some people on here who are insisting that Motability are shoving EVs down people throats. It's just not true. But there's an agenda to follow, so......😂
I'm disabled, even if you get a new car on finance, if you haggle hard enough you'll easily get a better deal than Motability offers, providing no adaptations are needed. I've got a Polo GTI (coz I hated the gutless 1.0 engine) and I'm paying £13 more a month than I was on the previous Polo 1.0, 2 years free servicing thrown in, plus full tank of full when I picked it up, there's no way Motability would have done a GTI for £219 a month, I'd have definitely had more than that taken. Looking on Motaclarity site, they want my total allowance, which would be £284 a month, plus a down payment of £2,599, I only put down £2,000, plus the residual value of my Polo 1.0, even if I got a Polo 1.0 on Motability they still want full allowance. So per month I'm £65 better off, which is a tank of fuel, and saved £600 in cash.

I was pleased to hear from both of my daughters that they will not go electric, (till they have too). My younger daughter is disabled and relys on a mid sized van based motability vehircle for her electric wheelchair. Motability have been trying to push an electric on her, but luckily both her and her husband are minor petrol heads, so have been made to wait longer for a replacment ice vehicle. She says that her hands are full enough when getting home with kids and shopping, that she often forgets to recharge her wheelchair, she dreads having to mess around plugging the car in out in the cold and rain, on a sloping drive that she struggles on anyway.
A friendly point to you about e-mobility chairs. We are beginning to see fire incidents with Li-ion batteries. There are other suitable battery chemistries that are allowed on planes that you can use. Li-ion batteries for e-chairs are much the same as those in scooters or on e-bikes. Choose a power source for safety first and make sure your daughter knows how to treat it and use it. Best wishes
My mum recently ordered a new motability vehicle in early December, decided on an MG HS. We did mention to the dealer about an EV as there were a couple of options (a ZS EV and MG 3 EV). But as soon as we mentioned we visit friends in Dorset (about a 4 hour drive away) and Cambridgeshire (about 2 hours drive), he said an EV wouldn't be suitable. So we settled on a petrol suv for her. Driving to see family shouldn't really be seen as an "out of the ordinary" journey though. We've never had a problem with motability, and they've never questioned the use of the vehicle, even when going for a random night drive and breaking down.
Credit to that sales person for advising correctly. There are a few genuinely good sales people out there who do think about the long game, and not quick sales figures. When my local dealership closed during the plandemic, my sales guy that I had bought 3 cars from (not Motobility although I am disabled) moved dealerships 65 miles away, I followed him when I bought my last car coz I trust him. We have a good relationship, he knows I'll make the finance guy cry or I'll walk out, first time it happened he stood there chuckling, he knows I know my stuff both about the vehicle and finance, so he just gives me the next best price, tells me to come back in a week and low ball them and we meet where the lowest price sort of is, he knows free servicing and a full tank of fuel are deal breakers for me, he doesn't show me half the promotional paperwork gumph he's suppose coz he just knows it's a waste of time and won't influence me. When you find a good sales person it's worth staying with them when possible, he's even said, I'm not gonna try and up sell you and others like you who know what they want, coz ultimately people always come back to him, meaning he wins in the end. Too many sales people just want the highest sales price or sales figures each month, regardless whether that's right for the customer or not, I personally won't stand for that.
Yes your right Geoff with the DLA (Disability Living Allowance) benefit and "option" of having a car instead of full "money" ie half the money and the car Thank you for high lighting this keep going 🙏💪
Most of them are _well_ over half the money, most I looked at were 100% of the mobility component and many need a downpayment - they've definitely made it more expensive than when I first looked into getting one I'm not sure I could afford it now, even though all you need to 'pay' to keep it on the road is fuel
Unless your getting a big standard ka sized car with a 1l 3cly engine, manual windows and plastic wheel, your paying fill price And a large deposit. My mum uses them and you could get really nice cars a nice 200bhp auto, for zero deposit and full allowance. Iirc it's about 300 per month give or take. The last few years deposits have go up into the thousands, and no cars are over 150bhp, and even them are the hybrids. All the petrols are around 100bhp and no diesels anymore I think. Personally I think 100bhp in modern heavy cars are quite dangerous, a mid 2000s 110d engine was fine lots of torque so you could get out of trouble relatively quick and you can enter a motorway with a shortish on ramp mat hing the speed of traffic But these 3cly 1liter sub 100bhp with about 12nm of torque are a death trap, make mistake pulling out (we all do it time to time) or choosing the wrong lane on a roundtable, it's nice to have a bit of poke to get out of the shit you just put yourself in. Side note I have an ioniq facelift hybrid, and that is relatively nippy, given it's only a 1.5l na , the battery fills any lack of torque and it's fun to embarrass 320 owners, with a crappy taxi looking boring car. However when it went in the garage, I was given a Prius, thinking that should be better, given they all but created the hybrid segment I was surprised to find out it was the slowest acceleratng car I think I've ever driven. My 1.3 1991 escort van may of been slower, but that Prius was dangerously ly slow, only living up at about 65-80. And it's mpg was not a patch on the ioniq. Or any of its tech except lane keep that was very good. But that was the only plus point to it.
Yes- underpowered rubbish. On another note- I recently hired mazda CX5,2LITRE PETROL- COULD NOT PULL THE SKIN OFF A RICE PUDDING. IT FELT LIKE A 1 LITRE.😮
My niece who is also on mobility ordered her 1st car at a Vauxhall dealership in Bromley south London after a test drive just before Christmas she was told there was a 6 month wait on the petrol Moka, now had an update she will take delivery it in a couple of weeks. From what I understand she was never pushed down the EV route so it looks like it most probably varies from dealer to dealer depending on their EV sales.
The whole thing about charging EVs is the fact that you have no choice but to use a card because you can't pay cash and hence you have all these pre-payment charges. Unlike most service stations (except ASDA) which have cashiers where, if you are budgeting your money, you can use good old fashioned cash!
Motability used to permit the outright purchase of a car, it's how I got my Mondeo in 2009. They've now ceased that option, therefore you'd need to get the highest rate of Mobility component of Personal Independence Payment benefit, and Motability then take UP TO 100% of this component, depending on the vehicle chosen. leaving the "care component" to the receiver of the benefit. Some higher models even require a down-payment of hundreds or even thousands of pounds in some cases.
@@salnaturile8653 You have to return it at the end of the 3 year lease period. Nearly every dealer is part of Motability so she had a wide choice of cars to choose from not just Vauxhall.
@@salnaturile8653 Your lease only runs for 3 years (just before actually). You then have to give the car back if it was on the motabilty scheme. That leaves the person in receipt of the benefit without a car. You’d have to either take on a new lease with a totally new car, or buy one yourself. It’s worth noting that on the motability scheme, tax and insurance is included, as is servicing. It’s easier for some to just keep getting the car replaced every 3 years than dealing with the car plus servicing and insurance. I was lucky that at the time I was able to buy a 3 yr old Mondeo outright.
Anyone else seen the mobility advert on youtube? the one that only says good things about EVs they aren't for everyone but mobility just seem to be pushing them, the used market will be flooded in 3 years with cars no one wants
I bet the govt is subsidising them and Motability is basically a fleet operation so there'll be back scratching going on. Anything to try and say there's huge sales of EVs when there isn't. The govt is manufacturing the sales via people who have little choice.
Motability is incredible for those that get it. It used to be based on Disability living allowance that came in two categories Help at home and help getting around outside the home, so the care component and the mobility component. Both used to have three levels. and if you got all three you'd get circa 2016 (when I was a (special need housing officer)about 17k a year -so its gone up since then but this was only when you qualified for the highest levels od care and mobility. That change about 8 years ago and was renamed PIP. Personal Independence Payment. Now with the mobility component under PIP if you qualify for the highest level £62.55 per week you divert the payments to a motability company and for that you get a reasonable brand new car every 3 years.. The tax,, repairs, insurance and raod side assistance are all part of the package. So for £62.55 perweek you get and new car every 3 years with the option to buy it or a new car and all his mother does is put the petrol in. Also remember his mother will pay no rent or mortgage interest payments as she will be on housing benefit. Its the people that go to work I feel sorry for
Perhaps her son didn't have the knowledge until he was forced into a position where he had to research. Motobility was designed to help disabled people, and from the outside it's a trusted scheme, (he wouldn't have had much cause to doubt the scheme based on ICE vehicle experiences), although I would suspect that will change now the Government/dealerships are using the scheme to easily shift EVs to prop up new EV sales and we hear more stories like this.
I had a Motability car a few years ago...seat Ibiza 1.0. The way it works is you have to be receiving a disability payment. Mine is PIP (personal independence payment)...following a road accident that's left me in a wheelchair. You get assessed before you get given anything. Mine is about 500 a month. To get a car you apply to Motability. When I did it you could chose from a range of vehicles. I chose one that didn't use my entire monthly award. Most of the cars take your whole benefit in exchange for a 3year lease. If you want something nicer like a BMW, you have to cough up a cash payment as well. It cover the vehicle, insurance for two and some repairs. Overall it's not that different from a normal lease scheme....and I've seen a few that are actually better. This was a few years ago...not up to date with it now. I do know that an EV wouldn't be suitable for me though...for several reasons. That's why I've got a VW UP.
Deliberately miss sold. dealers have almost always gone this & refused to give you your legal rights & no paperwork so no contact or details. This is why I left the trade the only normal car company that did this correctly was daewoo that became GM that continued with the dubious sales.
I am in Melbourne Australia and was playing golf over the weekend with a mate who runs a large local Lexus Dealership. He says sales of electric vehicles in his dealership are virtually non existent. Based on customer feedback, their main concern is not range anxiety or charging infrastructure but the massive depreciation they are likely to cop when purchasing. Hybrid sales are really strong, but EV have totally dried up.
I'm in UK and have a hybrid Company car for the tax benefits. I rarely charge the car as it takes 5 hours for a 30 mile range. So I run mostly on petrol at around 25-30mpg (mostly in electric charge mode to keep my electric charge topped up) in a car that should average 45-50mpg. However my personal tax benefit is significantly lower compared to a cheaper, fuel efficient petrol/diesel that could easily manage 60mpg or more. It's a crazy world...............
I'm picking up my Vauxhall Mokka (petrol version) on the Motability scheme tomorrow. Have to disagree with the guys comment about Motability forcing her into having an EV. Motability have no input into what car you select and this is all down to what you decide to do at the dealership when talking to a salesman. All Motability do is purchase the car and then lease it to you after you have decided on what car you want. The timescales for Vauxhall are the same for everyone buying a Vauxhall at the moment be they cash, finance, PCP or Motability. Why did they not make sure someone went with her to make sure she wasn't brow beaten at the dealership?
Part of the issue is, also, that suitable cars able to take a winch and a wheelchair in the rear are changing over to being an EV. When my sister went to get a new car the only one that would work was a self charging hybrid, which isn't so bad. No doubt in future options will reduce even further. This EV craze is crazy. Let the market decide!
Motorbilty have been pushing this the last couple of years, they make the advance payments for ÈV cheaper now & tend to only offer inefficient ICE cars that have a more expensive AP. They have taken all the big cars & vans away & only offer electric type vivaro with a range of 80 miles 🙈
They are making sure there's enough in the account to cover the potential purchase, the refund can take up to a week to come through so you end up subsidising the charging companies. If you register for the charging App you don't get charged the pre-authorisation fee as they already have your bank details on a direct debit - but you would have to register with every charging company you were likely to come across......I think I might prefer rocking up to a diesel pump and paying cash.
You pay an amount up front, to prevent theft. The balance of the pre-payment is then returned to your account. This usually happens within a minute or two of the end of the transaction. You Tube channel "Dave takes it on" goes into detail on his channel. www.youtube.com/@davetakesiton
It's not the fault of the car. The cars are great in the right circumstances. But they're not right for everyone and she definitely has a case against that dealer.
@@stephenbirchall941 Is someone on motability likely to be able to get a car like that, though? It takes a trip or two to get experience with charging out on the road. Maybe she hadn't got that experience. EV ownership is a lot of fun if you're up for coping with the odd hiccup to counterbalance the sheer bliss of home charging and all the other upsides. But if you've been bounced into it, maybe not so much. I'm not sure why these pre-authorisation charges were such an issue. If you get the car charged then the pre-authorisation has usually vanished, to be replaced with the correct invoice, before you even get to your destination. No matter the day or the time. Was she pre-authorising and then the charge was failing? It's not that clear why these charges weren't clearing, but nobody should be placed in that position. Nobody should be bounced into having an EV if they're reluctant or unaware of how they have to approach it all with a different mindset.
Actually, how big do you think most towns are? Modern EVs have much longer practical range than you seem to imagine. I've got an 85-mile round trip tomorrow to take a neighbour to hospital and it won't come close to the range of my relatively short-range EV, even in winter. I've taken it on a 1,000-mile road trip in summer, to go to a music festival, and almost 200 miles (one way) to visit friends for Christmas. I regularly go to the theatre 50 miles away and back in one evening. Never need to charge for that one. Hate on EVs all you like, but how about sticking with facts. The cars go like a bat out of hell and have torque you wouldn't believe. Bit of a waste for city shopping don't you think? Also, they're particularly good for country life because most people in the country have some sort of driveway, and petrol stations are often quite a long way away. Squillions of the damn things around here, in the middle of the countryside.
Good on you for bringing these stories into the spot light Geoff. The scheme is fantastic and can bring light to many dark lives. I don’t like however sob stories where the son gets his 5 mins after the event. If that was my family member, all things would’ve been considered prior to collection, with example worst case scenarios discussed. This is a typical non thought out purchase and non planned journey. A quick search shows options of petrol/diesel vs electric on the scheme is about 2:1 and the price these have paid is through not being patient and getting the car you wanted. You ordered the car, you paid for the advance, all reviews and opinions are on many websites including motability, it doesn’t wash with me. Customers have rights but they also have responsibilities. It can’t all be the dealers/oems fault.
Geoff, the way you explain this, you make it sound like our dearest leaders are NOT working for the best interest of their constituents...."Say it ain't soooo Geoff please, Saaaay it ain't sooooo"
The last thing vulnerable users need is an EV....what about emergency use when the battery has 20 miles in it - simple top-up with petrol or potential 40 minute wait before you can go anywhere?
One of two things will happen. 1) Vehicle manufacturers will be sued for miss-selling, They will then sue whomever for pushing them down the EV path which theoretically will be Governments. 2) The Governments will be widely sued instead of the vehicle manufacturers.
The dealers selling EVs are stuck with them and are frantic to get rid of them. I'm in the US and car rental agencies around us have EVs that just set unrented week after week. One place has a Tesla that was crashed last fall and it's sitting around doing nothing. It's not worth fixing because no one rents them anyway.
That's been one of my biggest arguments for "daily use", being disabled myself, it's something I consider when I see the chargers. Every time I've seen Lee The McMaster charge, the majority of the chargers have zero "accessibility", often no space around the charger for walking aids or wheelchairs, screens at the back or opposite side, no drop down curbs, gravel around the area, and then there's the issue of the short and heavy cable (also meaning you have to park so close you can't get between vehicle and charger), as I've said to Lee, if the chargers did have canopies like here's been calling for, then there could be a rail system in the canopy where a wire/cable comes down to support the weight of the charging cable, this would help most people to be honest not just disabled people.
@@geoffersvoiceofreason2534 Like Tony said, if you require assistance at a petrol station the attendant will come out. Look next time you're at a petrol station, there's usually an orange disabled sign with instructions on how to get their attention. I'm lucky enough that I'm able to pump myself, but the local garage where I grew up got to know me and when they offered, I took it and they use to come out if I did a polite beep.
I have had 2 motability cars for my son and his needs and I have chosen both of them you are not required to go to any specific brand or dealer (I am in the motor trade as an independent so i wanted toyota)! And my experience with motability has been an absolute pleasure obviously a big part of that comes down to the vehicle being absolutely fantastic.
Yeah motability are liars as ive had run ins with them too & concerned when next car term finishes & push electric next but am in process of a court case regarding them for falsifying information & lying to push vehicle dont want, more too it but wont get into it on here & yes there will be lots of cases & seen online motability have lied to others in past too.
Geoff, It will properly get worst as of 2024 car manufacturers need to sell 22% EV's so garages will be doing the upmost to push them. Keep up the great videos.
I did a trip between Vancouver and Calgary - it goes through a mountain range. Mid way there was a major collision and the whole HIGHWAY was shutdown - the detour was 7 hrs through very remote roads deep in the mountains - at one point we were even level with a Glacier... THANK GOD we were in a GAS VEHICLE with a FULL tank that could allow it to travel 900KM. In an EV we would have DIED.
The top rate of the mobility aspect of PIP gives you the option to choose a motability car. I have a Vauxhall and so does my sister. The dealers are saying to everyone that parts made in Ukraine mean that they can’t get you a petrol or diesel for a year, but you can have an EV. They cost a larger amount as a down payment. My sister said no to the EV as she knows there’s no suitable infrastructure and also the safety worries, plus she lives in a terrace with no space for a charger. The dealer was disappointed, but within a week she was telephoned and told that the petrol she chose that was on a 12 month backlog was suddenly ready! I think it’s a tactic they’re using on vulnerable people like the lady you describe who do not know the reality. It’s all about commission and sales to them. The EV market should be regulated and an inquiry opened into infrastructure and safety and it should not be forced upon anyone by 2030, let alone the vulnerable. We know that they’re forcing us all out of our cars in any way and as quickly as possible. If they succeed, what will they blame the changing climate upon next? Well, after air travel and manufacturing and gas hobs and trees!
The Ukraine conflict has been going on for over a year and shows no sign of ending. You'd think Vauxhall (and presumably Opel) would by now be manufacturing the parts somewhere else if it was impacting their sales.
Sounds like my road trip on a Renault Zoe I did in the Outer Hebrides a while ago. One time I barely made it 100 smi a day, due to backtracking, broken and slow chargers. Just wanted to see how a BEV would fare in a real world test. My petrol car has a range of over 1000km when I fill it up and drive economically. Enough fuel to get me from Switzerland to Denmark or Poland.
@@stephenbirchall941 Define great range, which EV can tow a 1400kg caravan over 600 miles without stopping to refuel? If Ford did not put that awful 2.1 Diesel in the Granada in the late 70's would we have the super efficient diesel engines today? Mercedes bought in far lower numbers back then so I think its the Ford. @@stephenbirchall941 In the UK? Charging must be a pain as most chargers seem totally unsuitable for vehicles with a trailer never mind a caravan. And do they drive hundreds of miles or like my dad who thinks 40 miles requires several stops and a night away before driving back?
Hi Geoff. Firstly I’m 100% with you regarding EV cars. Second, I don’t have any direct dealings with Motability, but I know quite a few who do, and generally they’re very happy with Motability. Some have difficulty understanding the complexities of car ownership, and many may feel they have been forced into accepting an unsuitable vehicle, but there is a reason. You, more than most, understand the current difficulties regarding new car supplies, I recently waited 9 months for a new car. And here lies the nub of the problem. If car manufacturers can’t supply the demand for new ICE cars, why would they sell, at a generous discount, cars to Motability, when they can easily sell them through their dealerships at retail price? Compounding this, is as you’re also well aware, there is currently a glut of new EVs. Add these two together and you will understand why the situation you’ve mentioned has arisen. Motability’s list of ‘available’ cars clearly demonstrates this dilemma. Cheers Noel.
ASDA preauthorise for petrol. She wasn't missold a Mokka. She wanted a Mokka and didn't want anything else or to wait for a petrol version. This shouldn't be the case, but the unfortunate reality is, if you're so financially unstable you can barely afford to pay your heating - why are you buying a car full stop? Let alone a Mokka for the sake of impatience.
I watched a guy do a video of a road trip he did in America with his EV, and a few times he had to pull into an area that was the only place chargers were available and he said he felt very very unsafe while he was waiting for his car to charge, and he said that an unaccompanied female driver would probably be scared to death sitting in her car waiting in some of these places..it's a serious issue for women to consider in America, and I would think that in the non too distant future the way this country is heading it's something that women in the UK need to think about..
Hey Geoff, Fancy fighting in WW3 in Ukraine? Can you do a video telling Rishi that conscription would not happen! The UK just wouldn't fight a pointless war.
I went to order my motability car from Ford last year. After talking to the salesman and telling him i lived in an apartment he actually told me an EV would not be suitable for me. I ordered a petrol puma which was a factory order and received it within 4 months. Absolutely outstanding service.
While doing an essay on this , there is a peer reviewed paper around 2015 about EV manufacture using around 50% more CO2 than conventional cars, but this mainly depended on how the electricity for the manufacture was being produced, clean or dirty (hydro - cleanest, coal- dirtiest). To cut a long story short. An EV manufactured in a country with dirty electricity would take up to 150,000km of exploitation before it became even in CO2 gasses with a conventional vehicle. The main culprit in CO2 emissions is the manufacturing process not the daily refueling/recharging.
@@oldcynic6964 It is on line on "Google Scholar" the paper was published in the EU. Type in Electric vehicle manufacture. There were numerous articles about the paper, with a lot of academics pointing to its flaws and then a rebutal from the author.
Motability is a lease scheme. If you're on the enhanced rate (highest rate) PIP you can use the money to lease a brand new car. You hand the car back after 3-4 years and get a new one...
Having several friends and relatives with Motability cars. The system is abused beyond belief. Remember when you become disabled after retirement you cannot have a Motability car and have to pay through the nose for everything. She should count herself fortunate for cheap motoring and the ability to drive hundreds of miles.
Actually it isn't cheaper in many cases to use Motability. As I've written to someone above I've got a Polo GTI (coz I hated the gutless 1.0 engine) and I'm paying £13 more a month than I was on the previous Polo 1.0, 2 years free servicing thrown in, plus full tank of full when I picked it up, there's no way Motability would have done a GTI for £219 a month, I'd have definitely had more than that taken. The only time Motability makes financial sense in my opinion is if you need a larger vehicle where financing it would cost more than £284 (on the best deal) or if you need adaptations or a ramp/lift. Motability being cheap motoring is a myth, particularly when you've got a small car.
So basically a brand new free car.Disability cars are maybe the only really suitable application for EVs,for getting around to the shops, medical appointments etc.People who have to pay for their own cars have to make difficult decisions about the expense of making long journeys
Nice of her family not to assist her when she was getting the car. The hold comes off instantly on a c/c but can take up to 14 days via debit card. Why did she get a car if she couldn't afford to forego the £288 a month to pay for it?
In fairness, if she's used Motability reliably for years buying an ICE vehicle, then why would her family feel the need to assist her, especially if they've previously swallowed the "EVs are so great" message. Not everyone on low incomes have access to credit cards that don't rob you, a credit card isn't always viable. She can afford the cost of the vehicle on Motability, Motability will take her entire "mobility" part of her allowance, most vehicles will do that if not all to reduce the deposit needed up front, I don't know what benefit she is in receipt of, but for me, I'm on Personal Independence Payment, and my mobility portion is £284 a month, you can find that in the Gov website, if I was to use Motability they would take all of that £284 to fund the vehicle, I've chosen not to use Motability and my monthly vehicle payments are £219 after some haggling. However just like many EV owners we've seen, people don't see the true nature of cost of charging vs cost of petrol/diesel until they daily drive the vehicle. I mean I knew public charging could cost 43-89p per KW, but I didn't know about the insane authorisation charges until I saw Lee The McMaster visit so many different charges. Personally, currently I'm more than able to afford my car and the fuel I put in it, but if I was to get an EV, with high authorisation charges, that would change most definitely.
Geoff, in France this is what I learned the hard way. I tried to buy 5 litres of petrol…. TLDR; The unmanned petrol stations pre-auth €120!!! If you have €119, they will still take the full pre-auth AND not give you any fuel. Then they take 30+ days to refund you. It cost me €240 to buy 5 litres of fuel! And still took over a month to get BOTH pre-auth refunds back!
Parking fees etc should be locked in and based on a percentage of the average wage. Multiply this by 0.00001 for an hourly parking rate. Same for politicians wages base their pay increases on a percentage of the average UK wage.
It's almost what I pay in my small town in an underground parking garage 🤣 0,00159% to be exact. But in a major city it jumps to 0,00568% which equates to £1,88/hr
interesting video Geoff ...in NZ we have laws that cover "fit for purpose " at retail level ...i wondered if the law in was the same in England ? ie if you are sold an item that is not fit for purpose it can be returned / refunded. Has to be proven though...
So my brother in law is on motability - he drives quite a few miles for his job so would be best with a bog standard diesel - but he is being forced down the route of getting a hybrid - which he currently has but which means for most of his travel time he is lugging around an empty heavy battery. EVs etc are fine for some circumstances but they are just not the only solution.
I think we should all go around laughing at the sanctimonious jumped up better than thou individuals we see on the roads just to remind them of their sheep mentality ice ice baby
About 10 years ago…….Were you mis-sold PPI insurance?, call this number you may have a claim. A couple of years ago. Were you mis-sold a diesel engine vehicle ?, call this number you may have a claim. About 5 years time. …..Were you mis-sold an EV vehicle ?, call this number you may have a claim.
The pre payment at pumps is a killer for many especially for EVs . With petrol diesel you can go 400-500 miles so probably on 1 pre payment fee where you are likely to have multiple stops and therefore multiple pre payment costs with EV due less range and the most efficient way to top up EV is many small stops rather than 1 big one.
There's two sides to every story. She's getting a brand new car for basically free. An able bodied person could probably not afford to buy or lease the same car. Ask yourselves would you accept a brand new car for free?
My wife is on the Motorbility scheme and we decided to go down the electric car route and signed for a Moka. We started doing some research and started watching Lee with his Tycan experience and after much research we decided to cancel the Moka and keep our trusty diesel Kuga for an extra year, which we love. We have just ordered a Renault Austral and will be collecting it soon. The Austral is a full self charging hybrid and seems to make far more sense, especially for long journeys. When test driving it we both fell in love with it. It was so quite, comfortable and more than quick enough, with great fuel economy. This poor lady was definitely missing sold an electric car. They might work for some but I don't understand Motorbility pushing them for disabled folk.
Geoff, PIP ( disability allowance ) is Personal Independence Payments.. you are free to spend it how you want/need. We keep the money and purchase our own car. Or you can use the disability money to bring services to your house (Or you could just buy a wheel barrow of chocolate ) it’s your money , they cannot tell you where to travel or purpose of the journeys.. The only restriction if you have a free road tax vehicle is that the car has to be for the use or errands of the disabled person ( your partner cannot use it to do window cleaning or a taxi) I fear the end of these motorbillity leases for people who might have excess mileages or a value issue making problems getting the next car
So the Motability customer had unlimited resources online to research and make an informed decision about electric vehicles to ensure it meets her needs before committing to the purchase, but it’s the salesman fault when she doesn’t. The Motability customer has many ways of planning her journey to ensure efficient charging, but it’s the salesman fault when she doesn’t. There are plenty of petrol vehicles on the scheme for £0 that she could have chose, but it’s the salesman’s fault she didn’t. There are plenty of usb slots to charge a phone in a car which uses negligible battery life, but it’s the salesman’s fault she doesn’t. So it’s the banks, cars, salesman, dealers, service stations, Motability, traffic, person who had a breakdown or accidents fault but not hers. If she wasn’t so entitled maybe she could take some accountability for her actions.
A few years back, when we had the beast from the east snowfall, I was stranded on the A1. I was there for 5 hours and had a quarter of a tank of petrol, kept engine running just to keep warm. Now if my vehicle was an EV with a quarter of a charge left, I would have died from Hyperthermia when the battery died.
It's not motabilty misselling as they don't force you to buy anything. Choice is 100% yours. The dealership on the other hand have just used dodgy sales tatics to sell the car.
As a motability user, the choice of vehicles available is now mostly EVs which doesn’t suit my needs, I wanted an estate and the only estate available at the time was a ford focus mild hybrid (no plugging in) so I got the vehicle and it’s been a good car, now that term is nearly finished and I told if I want an estate again it would probably have be another focus but they only gonna be available for a short time as ford stopping production
When I use a self-service gas station at night, I have to pre-authorize a payment of 120 €, but that amount is never withdrawn from my account. They only withdraw what I actually spend. May be this is possible because refueling my car takes less than 5 minutes and the whole preauth-system doesn't work well when the final amount is only known an hour later. Another issue might be that you do not have SEPA in the UK ( because of Brexit or GBP, I do not know). SEPA has a newer feature that allows real-time payment for normal money movements across (parts of) Europe.
My wife had to wait 12 months for her vauxhall mokka petrol. We asked the sales person about Evs he said have a petrol car .By the way it is a Motability car.

@@ChalcedonXXX They fell out of use 100 years ago because the lead acid batteries couldn't provide the range or the speed that the ICE could. DESPITE the fact that ICE cars are horrendous fire hazards and have been catching fire with predictable regularity ever since. Hi Geoff,
I use a Motability vehicle.

Best wishes
I bet these councils don't charge councillors to park/enter their zones!
Motability dictating what you can use your car for........ I'm lost for words.
They don't, it's the dealer.
A shady dealer walking over dead bodies on the hunt for a signature on the bottom line is a dangerous man. Then he lies his worthless ass off even!

Most of them are _well_ over half the money, most I looked at were 100% of the mobility component and many need a downpayment - they've definitely made it more expensive than when I first looked into getting one
I'm not sure I could afford it now, even though all you need to 'pay' to keep it on the road is fuel
Personally I think 100bhp in modern heavy cars are quite dangerous, a mid 2000s 110d engine was fine lots of torque so you could get out of trouble relatively quick and you can enter a motorway with a shortish on ramp mat hing the speed of traffic
But these 3cly 1liter sub 100bhp with about 12nm of torque are a death trap, make mistake pulling out (we all do it time to time) or choosing the wrong lane on a roundtable, it's nice to have a bit of poke to get out of the shit you just put yourself in.

Some higher models even require a down-payment of hundreds or even thousands of pounds in some cases.
Thanks for this upto date info on the DLA benefit 🇬🇧
I don't understand the example Geoff uses. You aren't forced to take any car. You have a wide choice.
Couldn't the lady in question have simply kept her reliable diesel? Are you forced to change cars regularly under that scheme?
Well said Geoff for highlighting all these issues.
none of the EV public chargers I have seen have any handicapped parking/access
They're there. How many LPG pumps have you seen this week?
I regularly see them.
Anyone else seen the mobility advert on youtube? the one that only says good things about EVs
they aren't for everyone but mobility just seem to be pushing them, the used market will be flooded in 3 years with cars no one wants
I bet the govt is subsidising them and Motability is basically a fleet operation so there'll be back scratching going on. Anything to try and say there's huge sales of EVs when there isn't. The govt is manufacturing the sales via people who have little choice.
On with Ahmed Malik? Brilliant Geoff. You're two of my favourites watches. Can't wait!
Its the people that go to work I feel sorry for
Love the content Geoff!
Sounds like the son should have advised his mother better - although I know from experience that parents don't like to take advice from their kids.
They have taken all the big cars & vans away & only offer electric type vivaro with a range of 80 miles 🙈
i dont understand what pre-authorisation is?why would you pay £45 when the actual charge is £35?
What an ordeal she had to endure over Christmas in cold weather. EV's are only useful for shopping in your town and def not for travel.
and have your own private front drive with a charger to charge up over night, then i guess your good to go.
It's not the fault of the car. The cars are great in the right circumstances. But they're not right for everyone and she definitely has a case against that dealer.
It depends on the EV. I can get from the north of England to the south coast without charging.
🤣😿😢😆I love this comment, so true, @sarge27271 LOL
😄@@Lufu2
The last thing vulnerable users need is an EV....what about emergency use when the battery has 20 miles in it - simple top-up with petrol or potential 40 minute wait before you can go anywhere?
One of two things will happen.
1) Vehicle manufacturers will be sued for miss-selling, They will then sue whomever for pushing them down the EV path which theoretically will be Governments.
2) The Governments will be widely sued instead of the vehicle manufacturers.
And governments will change their policy. There's no way that all new cars are going to be electric by 2035.
What assistance is available to help the disabled charge and pay ? As yet, there is no answer from charging companies 😡
Tell us, what assistance is there at petrol pumps?
@geoffersvoiceofreason2534 I flash my lights and honk my horn and show my blue badge and an assistant will come out 👍
@@geoffersvoiceofreason2534 Like Tony said, if you require assistance at a petrol station the attendant will come out.
Jeez, I'd love to know what parts are/were made in Ukraine - that well-known centre of the automotive universe. (/SARC)
Fancy - keep it to yourself! They can't have you gallivanting all over Europe on a tank of GAS!!!!!!! Wash your mouth out with some CO2! Stay Free!
So, the people that need a reliable car more than most, are sold a battery powered car. Yes, that make perfect sense🙃
The problem is the EV sold, not EVs in general. Most have great range.
Imagine telling the owner of that 1977 Diesel Granada that in the future their equivalent car will be much bigger and weigh half as much again and yet will do 60mpg+
@@WhiteDieselShed thanks at least for noting great range. Yes for towing not there yet but there are people who tow caravans with EVs. I can send you videos if you like.
@@stephenbirchall941 In the UK? Charging must be a pain as most chargers seem totally unsuitable for vehicles with a trailer never mind a caravan. And do they drive hundreds of miles or like my dad who thinks 40 miles requires several stops and a night away before driving back?
@@WhiteDieselShed isn't it also a problem with caravans as you take up two pumps?
Even with a government discount, surely a new electric Mokka is a very expensive vehicle for someone on benefits?
Yes, I was thinking the very same thing.
Taking wagers on if they shut down "were you miss sold an EV"...
Great vid. more like the original Geoff buys cars topic. I prefer watching this type of info, thks
I want to know how much they really cost 💰because they are subsidised, what happens when they take it away , £50k a car 60 70 etc 🙄
The EV grant ended 2 years ago...
Very good point but there,ll be s thousand tesla disciples that claim there are no subsidies
The main culprit in CO2 emissions is the manufacturing process not the daily refueling/recharging.
vlad - can you please supply the details of that paper. Is it available on-line? Do you have a copy?
@@oldcynic6964 It is on line on "Google Scholar" the paper was published in the EU. Type in Electric vehicle manufacture. There were numerous articles about the paper, with a lot of academics pointing to its flaws and then a rebutal from the author.
Q: Where do you go when you've been mis-sold an EV?
A: Nowhere.
You've been a lovely audience etc etc.
She could have just extended her lease if there wasn't anything suitable.
It's almost what I pay in my small town in an underground parking garage 🤣
0,00159% to be exact.
EVS should never been given to the
Disabled who are
Slow in mobility
Thermal run away
Plus many more problems
Basically saying it should be used as a mobility scooter for local use. Interesting info.
EV miss[p]elling lawsuits are coming?!
Thank goodness for predictive texting!
Who is forcing him?
The customer chooses the car.
It's petrol or diesel NOT GAS!
Petroleum Spirits at the very least

About 5 years time. …..Were you mis-sold an EV vehicle ?, call this number you may have a claim.
Wait for " we're you mis-sold a vaccination".That will make all the others look insignificant.
Exactly, I wish I was disabled & getting a £40,000 car for a bag of peanuts 🥜
100% safe and effective
Well done for putting this subject out there. Another case of the electric con falling flat on it's arse.
Geoff, PIP ( disability allowance ) is Personal Independence Payments.. you are free to spend it how you want/need.
We keep the money and purchase our own car. Or you can use the disability money to bring services to your house
(Or you could just buy a wheel barrow of chocolate ) it’s your money , they cannot tell you where to travel or purpose of the journeys.. The only restriction if you have a free road tax vehicle is that the car has to be for the use or errands of the disabled person ( your partner cannot use it to do window cleaning or a taxi)
I fear the end of these motorbillity leases for people who might have excess mileages or a value issue making problems getting the next car
Happy Monday Geoff!! Long last ICE Freedom!!
Geoff! Can't believe you were in my neck of the woods and I didn't know until today!
It's not motabilty misselling as they don't force you to buy anything. Choice is 100% yours. The dealership on the other hand have just used dodgy sales tatics to sell the car.
Afternoon Geoff👊🏼🏴
