(I lost my leg in Iraq '04) A Vietnam veteran suggested I do so because it saved his life when he suffered with his own demons. I have been watching a lot of videos from several creators, but I have a hard time focusing as I watch. Another side effect of the old injury. I found your video on choosing a table saw type and made it through the whole video as I took notes! Major accomplishment for me! This video was the 2nd of yours I watched, and the information you provided in both videos far exceeds anything I have yet seen. I cannot thank you enough for teaching the way you do!! I have a ways to go before I have tools, but I do have an iPad. I can add this to the small notebook I have been sketching in as the first "shop tools" I owned. I'm on my way! 📐🤓👌⭐⭐⭐⭐

I have thought about getting a tablet for a long time now i am sold will be shopping ASAP. It will save on printing things off my desktop and taking them to the shop and if I have the need to refresh my memory about something on RUclips I can.

Shawn, this just may have kicked me off the fence. I have been thinking about a tablet for use in the shop. Why too much time spent looking for a drawing I know I did and it is "somewhere' in this cabinet. You pretty much just proved my thinking was on the right track. Thanks!
Shawn, you should look into TeamViewer. You can use it to connect the iPad remotely to your main PC. That way, you can directly access files on your main PC and you can transfer your iPad files directly to your main PC (or vice versa). It works via your home network and remotely over the internet. It's free for personal use. I've been using it for years to help access and maintain all my, my wife's, and my in-laws' PCs and laptops. All without having to store anything in the "cloud".
I use autodesk sketchbook for my android phone and tablet. I love the simple tools that you can use like the straight edges, curve guides, and symmetry. And like you said, layering is a game changer over pen and paper.

I started out carving; learned a lot of the basics, and realized I’d only get better through practice. I also became super interested in Woodturning, and got me a small lathe and some tools; then started accumulating major tools like a bandsaw; jointer;table saw;planer, sander,etc. I didn’t go out and purchase the latest and greatest; didn’t have to. I’d get these things at a minimal price. I lately purchased a 4’X8’ CNC. I don’t know how to run it yet, but I understand that I’ll really need get maybe rhino; and rhino I’ll, to have a CAD/CAM to work it. The thing is, everything I’m learning is enhancing the other. There's an app called Ivydraw for Android based tablets. It is node based like Inkscape and CorelDraw. I haven't tried it with a pencil based stylus, but hope to upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 and try it out.
I love the decision of making my tablet a shoptablet. Both for music purposes and plans availability. It really is a great idea to have one around. Laptops get too dusty
Fun stuff my friend, I have a back ground in photography, and I switched to apple back in the early 2000's strictly for photoshop etc. This looks like a really fun program and as always you made a very good and interesting video about the iPad and program. Wow! When I first saw the Apple Pencil I thought it would be useful, but busy with other stuff I never researched it other than looking at the price & thinking no, but your video has opened my eyes to the amazing empowering potential of this & now I lust after one especially as you have indicated the price & performance of the basic entry which is likely fine for me. I always thought it would also be useful for marking up text, particularly when I am proof reading novel chapters for my business partner. Typing in stuff, changing the colour, striking out etc is very clunky & motivation destroying, but this looks super useful & intuitive to use.Thanks for sharing!
I will say it isn't great if you're expecting more powerful editing programs. Text, wordprocessing, sketching... the convenience makes me want to work on those more but I hate having to do serious editing of video and images on it. Then again, in a pinch it'll get it done.
I used to edit video with vhs recorders, analogue mixer, printed titles,pause the tape, then start it & all manner of difficult &vexing things. Compared to this days, an iPad is like a magical tablet from some great super natural creature. When I had done all of that only a very few people got to see it & the vhs tapes fade with time. We now live in extraordinary times, over flowing with blessings, the biggest trouble being that there is so much that one has to be selective and that is more difficult than it seems with so much that is exciting & useful.

I grew up on Calvin & Hobbes. Bill Waterson was a big inspiration and I had always wanted to be a newspaper cartoonist. I was very sad as newspapers died off and I realized that even if I somehow made a good enough comic, no one would see it!
Thanks! I've used an iPad since they first came out to handle inventory and billing on items I make and sell. I have 7 other drawing apps on it and this beats them all. Now I can sketch items to make during the slow time at craft shows.

Awesome information! I believe I have the same old as you and have only used it for music but had never thought using it in the shop. I have a great drawing all called sketchbook pro on it. Now I need to use it for my designs.
I’ve wanted to learn how to sketch and prototype on a computer or tablet but I just haven’t been able to figure any of the programs out. I usually sketch on a scrap piece of wood and build as I go lol

Very informative! Really enjoy your videos. I'm an architect, and a very advanced, hardcore AutoCAD user (since 1987), so that's what I use for all my woodworking design. I'm sure you have a lot of those old sketchbooks, but have you considered scanning select pages to archive them in a more retrievable format? You could then use them as backgrounds for new designs, or to refine old designs. Just a thought. Cheers... Dan
Shawn this is another excellent video. I’ll need to try the Linea app on my iPad Pro. It looks like it’s easy to use. I’m also looking into Affinity Designer for the iPad. I have it on my Macintosh. It does do vectors.
Great video! Adobe illustrator is available in the App Store. I haven’t used it, so I can’t comment on how good it is, but that might solve your vector problem.
Thanks for sharing this app. I have been looking for tool to unleash the pencil with. The Adobe sketch and draw just weren’t doing it for me. Have you come across a worthy 2d drawing tool like the old MacDraw, simple line and shape vectors with dimension capability. I realize you are likely too young to know MacDraw, it was a really nice, simple effective tool.

You'll have to do some research on that one. I do know the apple pencil only works on 2018 like I got and ipad Pro's but that a stylus should work with any ipad or iphone. Just not sure how well they'll work.

Until I got the sketching app I could take it or leave it. Once I got into that thing became indispensable.

I've always been a PC guy so while I knew of MacDraw I never used it. Linea truly is just a sketch program for me.

I still use it. Even edit videos on it. Learning Davinci now. But there are people so much better at teaching software than an old woodworker.

Uh... my plans are just a sketch. I use this as a replacement of pad and pencil. And personally I don't use measurements much at all.

I rarely use measurements except for overall height. Prefer proportions and taking measurements off the parts they fit to or tools used.
