Sketchup is an incredibly powerful software for modeling and designing projects for both woodworking and metalworking. If you have never used a 3D modeling software, this is the video for you. I'll be teaching the basics so that any beginner can learn how to get started. You'll learn the buttons and tools to use and the right order of operations to have a good foundation for building more complicated projects.

Hi Mike, these videos are helpful. But you shouldn't use control c and v. It's better and faster to use the move tool + Ctrl to copy components. Also, you can use the arrow keys to restrict to any axis.
Shift does also work for restricting to axis, as far as I recall.
The cut list extension is helpful. I'd like to see a tips episode on using that, and I could use some tips on laying out dimensions on the model. I've used sketchup for a couple storage beds, a closet with sliding doors, and a double bathroom vanity, and you still showed me a couple things. Thanks a ton, and keep these coming!
You have no idea how helpful this is!. It has taken me 2 weeks to come up with a bookcase design. I have my ryobi batteries charging and I'm ready to double check my math. I tried sketch up and winging it, I drove myself nuts. Thanks Mike!

I was drawing out a cart on my whiteboard earlier to try to figure out if it can have 3 shelves AND fit under my workbench with a 33" clearance. After watching this, I said screw that and I'm giving it a shot in Sketchup. It also helps because some shelves on the cart are to hold cases of beer, so I can make those solid components with their specific dimensions and see if everything would fit. This video helped a lot, thanks for this.
Also, not sure if mentioned, but if you need to quickly orbit around your sketch, you can simply hold the mouse wheel click and move the mouse around to orbit. Hope this helps as well.

I just learned this the other week. Instead of copying and pasting a component, select the component then select the move tool then press and hold shift while clicking the corner. This will do all three steps of copy pasting and move at once.
I need to learn how to create my own furnitures in SketchUp. I would like to design my own furniture instead of going to the 3D store and using limited furnitures 🙂

Sketchup will figure out spacing for you, using /# and *#. /# is divide by number, *# is repeat by number. So say you want 3 shelves evenly spaced over 3 ft. You can make the first shelf, copy that one to 3' away, then type "/2" immediately and it evenly divides it in 2. Remember it takes 3 shelves to make 2 spaces in between. If you want to make 3 shelves evenly spaced by 1', then make the first shelf, copy and paste the 2nd shelf 1' away, then type "*2". This will repeat your copy/paste for a total of 2. This would've prevented you from having to do math to find the location of the middle shelf, and also made your stretcher placement go a lot faster. I'd also look at sketchupforwoodworkers.com. He does a great job with breaking down sketchup's features, the only problem is its now outdated because sketchup free is a webapp.

Nice video! Your last one inspired me to try and work out my latest project in SketchUp before buying material and everything. One really handy and not to complicated shortcut is pressing the mouse wheel as a button if you have it. This gives you all rotate, pan etc. functions w/o selecting the tool from the menu!

I enjoyed this very much, you did a great job explaining how to manipulate the different aspects of Sketchup to be able to design what we need to make. It certainly helped me enormously as I am trying to design something out of 2" x 4" lumber. Thanks great job~!
While I was watching you gave me some hope that I could create something, it didn't work for me at all trying to draw and make a sketch of 2" x 4"s. Could not get them to line up on the diagonal as I needed them too. I'll stick to paper and pencil for the time being.
My fave “shortcut” is clicking and holding the scroll wheel on a mouse for orbiting and clicking and holding the scroll wheel while holding down the left button on the mouse to pan/move the view. Means you can move around your model really easily.
Possibly only a good tip if you’re making larger scale models but still.

Hey Scott, the shortcut keys are already automatically set for your use. Example,
Press
L, Line
O, Orbit
P, Push/Pull
This will speed up your day to day modeling. Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for this wonderful content..I was a furniture designer for so so many years only using by hand and now this content is very helpful for me for a start up because I really want to learn more using sketch up this time so that I will not be using my right hand anymore in sketching.. leveling up is a good thing.. I am planning to create my another channel that focuses on my designing furniture because this is really the thing where I started.. I will be looking forward more on this tutorial.. and please let me know what apps I can use where I can also draw online by hand for faster quick sketch ideas.

This would have made my custom aquarium stand so much easier on my mental health, i struggled because i over complicated so many aspects of the build that should have been simple and quick 🤨 and now that im upgrading the aquarium and stand, the process should be a little easier
And much easier that pen and paper sketching, althoulgh i will still have my post its of random ideas floating aroung 😁
When specifying the dimensions of an object you don't need to put a space between the comma and second number. Instead of 3, 4 just type 3,4 then enter. I know it's only one keystroke.

Hey Mike, great video. I have struggled with Sketchup but am finally getting the hang of it. Your videos definitely help as you explain things pretty well. Could you share some of the keyboard shortcuts in your next video. I find that once I learnt these it made the process so much easier
P for push Pull, M for move, Ctrl+Z for undo, M+Ctrl for copy and move, T for tape. L for line, E for erase, R for rectangle tool, Q for rotate tool, H for hand tool, Scroll wheel on mouse to move around, Scroll wheel on mouse up or down to zoom in or out, Space bar for arrow tool. I will post more as I remember them

I use photoshop a lot so it seems pretty similar but man that's gonna take some time to get proficient. I have someone wanting a custom made bookcase and I want to use this to present the idea bc showing him my sketch on graph paper seems very amateur..

I like this video. however, it be nice to see some basic shelf designs (framing). Like simple rectangles (like wall framing) before adding or cutting out other shapes. You started out great then i got lost after you made the first shelf. Also, I would understand it better if this was using for 2x4s or 2x6s and 1/2 inch boards...
