They just don’t compose TV show themes like they used to... with catchy hooks, amazing orchestrations, and that undefinable “something” which made them so memorable. Really feeling the nostalgia. 🙂
I actually have the original 1972 95 minute pilot on VHS with Hugh 'O' Brien. This was one of the best series ever on television. My daughter and I were watching it so much we had to convert it to DVD. It still rocks after all these years.
An amazing score - so 70s with the unison flutes and trumpets with horn flairs with just a hint of violins - and the touch of secret agent riffs the trombones -- just perfect.
Thank you for posting this. After all these years, I still remembered Frontiere's vivid theme music for this pilot, as well as the rotating diamond motif. And HERE IT IS! Even better than I remember it!
WOW! Brings back the memories! I loved this show, whether it was called "Probe" and/or "Search". I had no idea Leslie Stevens was behind It (The Outer Limits), nor that Domonic Frontiere had done the fantastic theme song (also from the Outer Limits). I loved this show when it was on NBC and watched it, as well as "Night Gallery" religiously. Not to mention the NBC Mystery Movies. This was a great time for television!!!
@methu124 I agree. Absolutely beautiful. Dominic Frontiere, Lalo Schifrin, John Williams, and Jerry Goldsmith composed some of the most awesome television theme music. They'll never be equaled much less surpassed. Now we don't even get television themes, just credits rolling during a show's dialogue. The end credits are even worse with a diminished screen within a screen so small that it's impossible to read the credits and you can't hear any music because of the load voiceover. Crazy!
About a year ago, I discovered this movie in my dad's bin. He recorded it in 1982 off of Superstation WTBS. Tape also includes "I Go Pogo" (recorded off of The Movie Channel) and Blake Edwards' "The Party" (recorded off of Cinemax). Great tape! And this movie is awesome. The music is kickass, and Lockwood is one of the coolest spies I have ever seen!
Wow!! I remember this show so well. I use to love the way his command center could communicate with the agents... That was so called... A ring and or neckless and the earphone.....
Here in the UK Probe was transmitted under the name of Search Control. I remember the catch phrase "Lock in, Lockwood" Uttered by Burgess Meredith when contacting Agent Hugh O'Brien through the receiver secreted in his teeth. 2 other agents featured were Tony Franciosa & Doug McClure. Happy times.
Intros such as this make me sad for today's programs; no theme music, only a few seconds of a title, and closing credits are pushed aside by ads for other programs.
@@Setebos Music is a lost art. Who knows how to arrange an orchestra today? That stuff is slated for the big budget film productions. It is about making $$$ and not creativity (unless that can make money too!) Why pay an orchestra when a few folks can crank out something cheaply?
I loved, loved, loved this show! And Longstreet. Two well-written and acted detective programs with actors I loved. I became a fan of Burgess Meredith with Batman, and this introduced me to computers and electronics.
I am so thrilled to see this post. This was my favorite TV theme in the summer of 1973 (as the title theme for Search) and this extended version is a dream come true.
On the back of the box for the 'Complete Series ', it says, "The Coolest Spy-Fi Show You've Never Seen!" Which was true, except that I DID see it. When it originally broadcast. I thought it was cool then. And given some of the shows that HAVE been brought back for another go, well, just imagine what they could do with this concept and our current technology. Are you listening at The CW?
First time I heard the full version of the elegant but strong theme music by Dominic Frontiere. The title is also beautiful. This is great, thank you for posting!
When, and most importantly, WHERE did Warner Brothers, release the full compilation of the "Probe"/"Search" TV series? I would CHEERFULLY fork over MAJOR MOOLAH, to watch every episode of this great series!
Hey mhinrichs, My brother and I were reminiscing tonight and came across a number of PROBE/SEARCH themes and we just wanted to both thank you SO VERY MUCH for providing us such a wonderfully special moment! This was our favorite show back then. All the love to you buddy! Thanks from 2 total fans in San Diego! :-)
After all of this time- this music still holds up. I can't believe it has been 35 years. Most of these people are either dead or on social security. Hugh O' Brian must be about 85 years old now
Just ordered the Pilot DVD. Love the title music, great theme! Just like as already been mentioned, Frontiere could sure write music and Stevens had a great eye for the engaging sci-fi futuristic material!
Thank God that TV series were comprised of between 24-30 episodes per season back then, instead of the 10-12 we get today. (That would be classified as a TV miniseries back then.) Otherwise, we would have been deprived of the cleverness of this series and it's hi- tech concept, since it only lasted 1 season, and was cancelled by the "forward thinking" network executives.
So glad you posted this. The audio and video are fantastic, and it brings back such great memories for me. I was 18 when this show came out and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Until I watched the clip tonight, the last time I had seen anything relating to this show was when it went off the air in August 1973. With nearly 50,000 hits, maybe your post will convince some of the "powers that be" that it may be a good time to release a DVD of this show.
Obviously, this tv theme music reflects the influence of the music from the 60's [i.e. rock, pop] on the writing of Frontiere, but I would not be surprised if he was not given total musical freedom by Hollywood execs...although I do notice that this show was produced by Leslie Stevens, who Frontiere worked closely with on "the Outer Limits"...
@SolarisBreeze57 Frontiere was a master! His Outer Limits theme will always stay with me (referring to the first season - not the second, which was scored by someone else using a theremin. His themes, or rather, parts of them were played throughout the first season. ABC always used parts of "The Galaxy Being" and the second episode aired, which I think was called "100 Days of the Dragon." Parts of both of these scores were used to fill out 1st season episodes. Stunning music!!
GREAT to the 12th power! Man, I also recall being glued to the TV (late hour or not) every week for this show. Kind of a blend of James Bond with Star Trek (at least the hi-techiness of Trek). I won't belabor NBC's stupidity in canceling the show as everyone else has already done it. With the fewness of episodes, I seriously doubt we fans will ever see a DVD release - but never say never, ya know? Thanks to you, mhenrichs for the memories!
A superb theme. I *think* the pilot film was "Probe" which then became "Search" for the series? In my experience, people usually refer to it as "Search Probe" which makes it slightly clearer the series you're talking about! Either way, the nebulous/non-descriptive title is really the only poor aspect of this pioneering, fun idea of a series about agents in constant touch with a base of operations who can support and update them in real time. Being the 1970s, I think it was three male agents that the show cycled round, and no females. The comms ideas have since been adopted by virtually all espionage-based TV shows, such as Alias, Chuck, and Agents of SHIELD. :-)

I was 7 in 1972 and this theme has stuck in my head since then.
Ever since then, I have had this music stuck in my head. TY for sharing.
懐かしいです。昔、よく見たテレビドラマで素晴らしい作品であると今でも思っています!!
A very smooth, elegant piece of music. You never hear this kind of class on television. Only music stolen from rock bands just synthesized garbage.
I remember the show and liked it a lot, I was13 or 14 y/o. Had a book based on the TV show.
Decades of having to play this in my head because it didn't exist anywhere else. Yay, RUclips.

Yeah, well, he wasn't bad as Wyatt Earp, either
This used to be a really good show on NBC on Saturdays. And that theme kicked ass.
Wens 9:00pm central. 1972-73 season. At least in the USA. :)
Same show - the pilot TV movie was called "Probe"; when it was picked up as a series the title was changed to "Search".
Thank you for clearing that up for me
