  • Early in their X camera system's life the Fuji company focused on releasing high-quality optics, with brighter than usual maximum apertures, to lure in professional (and affluent hobbyist) photographers. Let's see if this prime example of their strategy can cut it on a newer 24 megapixel camera.

    Hi Chris! Another new Fuji user here since some months ago. I got this 55-200mm and it's fenomenal IMHO, excelent image quality and quite compact. Perfect for landscape photography and hikking. I got also the 10-24mm, and very happy as well with it. Now I'm looking forward for the Fujinon 18-135mm test, I'm thinking on this one to be my all-around lens, especially for very long hikes, carrying only 1 lens. Or maybe the 18-55mm. First one is more polivalent, but second one is lighter, with high IQ and also faster. I wish I could buy both! Anyway, hopefully you'll test the 18-135 while I'll saving money for this next purchase. Thanks for sharing your work, it's really helpful

    This is my daily lens, over my shoulder for street photography, landscapes, architecture, garden, product, reportage… “overall, this is an awesome lens”
    This is very much the reach-for lens in the Fuji world for journalism and gawker type stuff where you can’t get too close without trespassing Or getting hurt. I find 4.8 to give just enough DOF to direct the viewer about what the photo is “about” while still offering buckets of storytelling content in the fore and background.
    A little too narrow for indoor stuff like weddings and parties; I find it also “looks like” a 50 to folks who remember FF SLR, so they often get closer than I’d like while I’m composing, and indoor spaces don’t let me circle-strafe.
    Color rendition combined with X-trans is superb on this lens and I find really good studio portraits can be had out of it when I’m packing light and can find a backdrop on site.
    I just wish they’d make a weather sealed version

    This is a nice lens. Your results are simular to mine. It is suprisingly goo for airshows as well. Although that is where you will run into a few of its limitations. The IOS is pretty dam good. I found at the slightly zoomed in range of about 130mm it is at its sharpest. 200mm you will loose some sharpness & contrast, for most subjects this is fine, the odd ones, not so.

Does the 3.5 vs 4.8 make a big difference between these two lenses (given that the 300-700 is newer and has other features to improve light etc). I often take pictures in lower light situations and want to know what's the best choice due to the difference in aperture. Thank you!

    Today I think I ran into the same issue you mentioned in the video. I was taking photos of a waterfall and shot several photos of it at 200mm. The first one was shot at f4.8 and then the rest was shot at f8. I did not notice anything wrong when I was taking the shots, but when I looked at the photos on the PC, the f8 photos looked very soft. The one f4.8 photo was sharper, but not REALLY sharp, you know. Not like the 56mm and the 90mm can get. Anyway, it was very surprising to see how soft the f8 photos were. And also it was annoying!

  • @kian8382
    @kian8382 5 лет назад +2

    Hi Chris, I wonder if the 200mm f8 AF issue happened to you was due to the "stopped down to focus" method Fuji used, I know Sony does that to avoid heavy focus shift when stopped down on some lenses. When I had this lens and the XF18-55, on last gen bodies like the XT2 and XE3, low light AF wasn't accurate especially with reflective subjects like dog fur or metal surfaces, newer lenses like the 23 f2 does fine though, I'm sure they fixed it with the XT3/30 gen body.

    • @just_eirik
      @just_eirik 3 года назад

      Could you explain this a bit more? Does the plane of focus shit forwards or backwards when stopping down from f4.8 to f8? I’ve seen so many people saying this lens is so sharp. If the focus shifts when stopping down, how does the lens have such a good reputation. I feel like everyone would run into this and complain about it.
      I’m NOT calling you a liar btw. I’m just not understanding this. And today I think I ran into the same thing as what you and/or Chris were talking about. I took a shot of a waterfall and the first one was at f4.8 and the rest was at f8. All at 200mm. And the f4.8 shot looked okay, not super sharp, but not unusable. The f8 shots very very soft however.
      Basically I’m just trying to figure out what caused this and wether there is something wrong with my copy or if this is a common problem that I can not resolve by replacing the lens.
      I’m shooting with a X-T2 btw

    • @kian8382
      @kian8382 3 года назад +1

      @@just_eirik in bright sunlight stopping down to f8 will not affect AF significantly, however in lower light on older bodies, smaller apertures will hurt AF so bad that you just can't rely on it, this is not a focus shift issue.
      And Sony suffers from the same effect too, but on Sony bodies you can choose to use CDAF only by selecting single AF to avoid this issue.

    • @just_eirik
      @just_eirik 3 года назад

      @@kian8382 So contrast detection AF performs better in those circumstances? So basically I could chose contrast AF too if I used an af points outside the middle square where the phase detect pixels are, or am I misunderstanding something here?

      @@aceflibble a true pro can probably use anything to make incredible photos, even a jam jar of your into free handing. When I say professional spec I am purely referencing how this is marketed by Fuji. It's made to be part of the triology of nicely built zooms of the 10-24, 18-55 and finally the 55-200. Or the Black badge Zoom line. The Red Badge zoom line include the lens I mentioned, they are fully weather sealed, feature Nano Gi coatings for flare reduction as well as linear motors for some of the fastest autofocus in the Fuji range. These are the lens' marketed to professionals in the Fuji world.

    I bought a used one that was made in Japan. Completely disassembled it to remove dust and can confirm this is a cheaply made lens. The zoom and focus ring are metal along with a few other parts and the rest is plastic. If you attempt to make repairs yourself be careful because any wrong move and in the trash it goes. Overpriced new and even overpriced used.
