Actually I'm a wedding photographer, and I just got this lens. I live in a sunny place, and I think it's a great option for outdoor ceremonies and receptions. I'll use the primes in lower light situations. The 50-140 is too big and heavy, and does not fit in a smallish bag standing upright, so I guess this one is the right option for my specific need.
zalle1 I should say things with the caveat “in general”. This lens will be really nice for outdoor ceremonies and actually I think for some portrait work too, especially in your situation. I do quite a lot of outdoor ceremonies but I stick with the 85 or 135 because we use them for receptions and indoor ceremonies too. There’s no one correct answer for anybody I just try to give the best general recommendations I can :)
@@TheLiamGordon I used the canon 85 f1.2 before, but found that sometimes I did benefit more outdoors with the 70-200 f4 is...
Adapting to Fuji now, and I'm adopting the same rule: zooms outdoors, primes indoors. I'm picky and I like to use several lenses, just don't like the weight... 🙄
zalle1 I feel you. At some point I’ll fully switch to Fuji to save weight.
Thanks for this, I appreciate your honest and informative review. Great shots by the way.
Thank you 🙏
Your pictures are really dope! Thanks for the review
Thank you very much 🙏
One of the most viewed videos in your channel. Speaks about the images you have captured with this lens.
Well, thank you kindly 🙏 I appreciate your comment.
Thanks for your thoughts Liam - very clear and helpful.
Thanks, Richard!
Thanks for your thoughts...I love your Saul Leiter type street photography images!
Thank you! Much appreciated.
Great review, glad I saw this one. Thanks mate.
Much appreciated. Glad you found it useful!
Just bought one, awaiting delivery. Curious to see some impressions by video so relieved to find a review that goes straight in talking about the subject. Too many reviews (in general) start with ads and even after 2 minutes haven't said a word about the purported topic. Already had an idea reviews might be mixed. Some of it's the difficulty in buying a longer Fuji lens that's affordable - not much to choose from. I got mine mainly for landscape, so it's good to hear more support for that. Nice and balanced review - good job!
Thanks Jeff! I appreciate the kind words. I think you’ll really like it for landscapes.
I used this lens while traveling in Ireland. Not my favorite lens, but I appreciate how light it was in my bag. I would take it again.
I agree, it’s weight is it’s saving grace.
Excellent video! Thanks and great shots!
Thank you very much!
Great review, subscribed. Thanks👍
Thank you! I appreciate the sub :)
I was looking for a proper review that would also give some insight from in-the-field use instead of just reading the spec sheet to the camera.. thanks for this, really helpful.
Blackwhitestyles I’m glad you found it helpful. Thanks for commenting 🙏
Same here, always find in-the-field expereince more valuable than specs :)
Hi Liam. Great video with some lovely images, I'm heading to California next year so there's some good inspiration here! Could you tell me what sort of focal length you found yourself using the most on this lens? I'm torn between the 18-55 with the 55-200, OR the 16-80mm. f4 as a 'one and done' travel lens. Both kits will cost around the same so I'm a bit torn.
Chris Flavin Hey Chris. Glad you enjoyed the video. I think I was at the longer end with this lens quite a lot. I particularly liked it that way for landscapes because it looks a bit different from the usual wide angle... however, if the 16-80 had been an option, it’s quite likely I’d have got that at the time.
The f4 aperture bums me out a bit but when traveling it’s not that often that I really need it to be at f2 anyways. And with the stabilization I guess I’d just use slower shutter speeds in lowlight.
It’s hard to say what I think you should do because there’s trade offs each way. But if I was in the same situation I’d likely have went with the 16-80 because I think less is more. That being said, either way I carry a little 35 f2 because sometimes I want that wide aperture.
Really nice photo! Thank you!
Many thanks! :)
Thanks, detail and great explanation 👍🏽
Reno Herdhiansyah thanks! I appreciate you commenting 👍
Great review, I will buy one straight away, hits all the spots for me.
Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoy!
I'm going for this one
Just placed an order for this lens, my main reasons were price and size as the more premium telephoto lens (50-140 f2.8) is a tad too big for my purposes. Loved the review and the shots are fantastic, cannot wait to use it.
That’s great! Thanks for watching and I’m glad you liked the review. I’m all about smaller gear that I don’t mind carrying all day :)
Wow you're a damn good photographer. A lot of these photo review channels (even the big ones) don't often show good pictures as an example on their review video. It kinda help sold me this lens tbh.
Thank you 🙏 I usually like to use gear for more than a couple days before reviewing so it gives me time to really see what kind of images I can make with it. Glad you found it helpful :)
@@TheLiamGordon I don't think it's a question of time but rather *skill* a lot of theses reviewers are a damn good presenter, and great at pointing out things that are important like how it handles etc etc but with you, the image just speaks for itself. And it is refreshing!
I appreciate the kind words 🙏😊
Thanks so much for review, I almost pulled the trigger when i saw a used one but your video makes sense.
I see this is like 3 yr old video. Now, Do you think there are any alternatives for this?? I want between 100 and 300 zoom range. also open for prime lens suggestions. for photo architecture, skyscapers etc
This was the last long lens I had or tried for Fuji so unfortunately I’m not up to speed on the other options these days.
Some of your photos are from the Columbia River Gorge, Portland, and Mount Hood! I love this lens
Yeah we went a trip to PNW. Portland was top of my list of places I would like to live :)
I'm in the process of switching from Nikon to Fuji (loving this system!) and have this lens on order. Intended use is urban, architecture and landscape, mostly woodland photography as I find the longer lens easier to compose with and keep trees (and buildings) more vertical. Appreciate the straight forward review.
Thanks Rod. I think you’ve made a great choice for what you’re using it for. Glad you’re enjoying the Fuji system too.
This lens is on my radar in the near future. I currently have the 50-230mm which is ok but not the best. Nice video and photo examples.
It’s good, but as I mention, not particularly fun to use. It is apparently prone to developing lens creep too. Which I haven’t had yet but it’s widely complained about
The Liam Gordon Fuji is kicking ass on their bodies but some of their lens designs clearly needs to be updated.
Hi Liam , it was a great video with some beautiful pictures, which fuje camera you use in this picture you was shooting? and onther question, this lens goof for portrait video shoting ??
Thank you Yosif! The camera was a Fuji XT2. I really dont know if the lens will be good for video portraits though. I've never done something like that before :(
Hi. It was really a good review. You covered almost everything. I have a question. I heard that this lens can't handle more than 16mb. I didn't really understood. It true? By the way, my body is xt30. Thanks in advance 🙏
Thanks Anwar. I’ve never heard anything like that. I use it on an xt2 and it seems to do great.
I have used this lens on my xt20 to photograph concerts. Image quality was more than good enough for my purposes. I used back button focus in manual mode.
It’s for sure a very capable lens! Glad it works well for you.
I loved the 55-250 from canon when i was with canon. I'm sur i will enjoy it more for street-portrait photography so i'm thinking to buy that one. Do u have some comparaison between the 55-250 from canon and that 55-200 from fuji ? Anyway great video and your pictures are very inspiring !
I didn’t have the two lenses at the same time. I had the 55-250 a couple years before I owned the Fuji so I can’t really compare them well. I think if you loved the canon lens you will love the Fuji. Image quality should be much better too. The Fuji lens is probably a bit heavier though.
Nice review-Thanks! you told me everything I need to know before buying. Now I have to make a decision! (my screen says this is coming from Philadelphia but you don’t have a Philly accent:)
Ben Sussman Thank you! Glad it was helpful. Yeah, I’m not from Philly (clearly), but it’s where I live :)
I've owned this lens since it's release and have enjoyed it. It's not 2.8, not my most used lens, but it's affordable and I love the size. I'm a hobbyist and find it a good fit in my kit for the few times I need more reach.
Awesome. The affordability and relatively small size was one of my reasons for buying it too!
Thank you for the great review. I’m torn between this lens and 70-300. I can afford the 70-300mm but there’s a used copy of the 55-200 for less than half the price of the 70-300mm. For I am also not sure how often I’d use telephoto lens. I enjoy hiking and I want to explore landscape photography with telephoto lens. Also, maybe some wildlife photography if I ever encounter into some interesting animals. Which one do you think I should get?
Great question Jeffrey. I can’t answer it for you but from my perspective, I’d probably start with the 55-200 because I prefer smaller lighter lenses. That being said, if you don’t mind the weight the 70-300 will probably be optically better at 200 than the 55-200.
Thanks!
What is your favorite Fuji lens?
Sebastian Flores my favorite so far is the 35 f2.
Hi Liam, for cycling photography what your recommended for me 50-140mm or 55-200 mm + 56mm? i have 2 body xt1, with 14mm, 23mm, and 35mm lens. thanks
Hard for me to say. I’ve never done cycling photography. My guess is the 50-140. The 55-200 and 56 are great but can be a little slow to focus and cyclists are usually moving quite fast :)
6:23 is superb!
Thank you so much :)
I got this lens new one for 300£ in xt-30 and 18-55 deal and its a great buy for me coz I love jogging, mountains, lanscapes, nature but I get your point. Its obvious as street photographer you would not like it as much. My 18-55 is not great like primes for street as well but it will be great for learning as a beginner. I like the size of this kit and I think those 2 are the best telephoto zoom lenses from fuji. Others are way bigger and heavy and too expensive.
GregoryD I got mine used for around $470. It’s definitely great for what you do. I should have mentioned beginners actually. The mountains is where I’d rather be, and this lens would see lots more use then. It’s not a bad lens, it just suits slower photography :)
@@TheLiamGordon Thanks man and I meant no offence hehe. I like street photography as well and maybe one day will get 35 f2 hmm I fancy 16mm 1.4 for night stuff, marco etc seems super good for everything. But cannot affort it and its too early for me. Need to learn basics and camera first...all the best with youtube man!
GregoryD no offense taken Gregory! I think you have exactly the right combo for your needs. The 18-55 is actually pretty good for street too. Especially when you’re new at it 👍
I'm confused between this lens and 80mm Macro which I'm planning to use with 2X tele converter. Image quality is the primary criteria and I cant seem to decide between the two. I shoot only landscapes!
Shyamal Bhat I’ve never used the 80mm macro so I’m not a good judge. However, I would imagine an 80mm prime lens for landscapes is far less convenient, and being a macro, you’re somewhat paying for its close focusing capabilities. I’d also assume you’re not going to make use of f2.8 very often. Also while WR is very useful, it won’t be much use once the teleconverter is on too.
I’m sure the 80 also has great image quality but it seems to me that it would be an awkward lens for landscapes.
Sorry that doesn’t answer your image quality concern and I hope you don’t mind me espousing my opinion outside of that :)
@@TheLiamGordon Thank you for your suggestions. I do agree that 80mm would be far less convenient compared to the versatility of a zoom range of 55-200.
Which fuji lens is good for low light and night photography.
I’d aim for a lens with an f2 or faster aperture.
Can't decide which one to buy... this or the 50-140...
I feel you. I would have liked the 50-140 but it’s much bigger and more expensive. I went with this one because I knew I’d be happier to carry it around. I’m sure whatever you decide, you’ll enjoy it.
I got an XT3 and i plan to shoot portraits for the most of the time with perfect light conditions, expecially people, maybe at 150mm+ focal lenght
Would you recommend it to me?
The best deal on Amazon is about 720$
It should be good for portraits. I don't do a lot of them but I've made a few I like of my wife with this lens. They are in this video somewhere. The standard portrait lens for a lot of people is the 56mm f1.2. Check for used deals. If you're in the USA check B&H Photo, adorama camera, KEH camera, or MBP.com
@@TheLiamGordon i know the 56mm is a beast but i'd like one without fixed focal lenght
Anyway i'm from Italy, we got crappy prices here, XT3 body is 1200$ 😂
I see. Yeah things tend to be more expensive in Europe. Maybe there will be a good used deal on ebay or a sale coming up.
In terms of low light, can it shoot comfortably indoors? What kind of ISO would you have to use indoors?
I wouldn’t say comfortably indoors but it can get by if you’re willing to drop the shutter speed. In my kitchen with the lights on during the day at 200mm 1/125 f4.8 - the brightest area of the room is iso4000. Most of it was 6400 or 8000... I’m not usually bothered by high iso but the very low shutter speed for me is where the comfort disappears on longer lenses. What kind of indoors stuff are you shooting?
The Liam Gordon I’m thinking of getting this lens for my camera when I am on the yearbook club next year. It would be inside the highschool, which has a lot of led lights. Do you think the 16-55 2.8 would be better?
In fairly dim light indoors, a wider aperture lens will make life a bit easier. However, if you’re not getting paid to shoot for the yearbook club I’d seriously consider just using what you already have. When images are high iso and not printed large you’ll barely see the grain. I have a few shots at iso 12800 printed in a 8.5x11 magazine and you have to really look to notice any grain.
@@TheLiamGordon sounds like fuji ppl never think about a flash as an option :-P
@@andreika6681 I think flash can be intimidating if you are inexperienced and if you’re not a pro, it’s an unexciting additional cost.
What Fuji zoom would be good for animal photography?
Great question. I'm probably not the best guy to answer as I've never tried to do that kind of photography seriously. If you're doing wildlife stuff and the animals are really far away then probably something like the XF 100-400 would be best. Wildlife photography gear gets expensive fast though.
@@TheLiamGordon thank you so much for the reply. I'll take that in consideration
Funciona con el adaptador xf 2x tc wr?
No se, lo siento.
my best pictures and most sold pictures where all with this lens. incl weddings. great for outdoor weddings on a sunny day. . @sufstreet
You know, I’ve been thinking of selling it because I’ve not used it in 6 months now. Maybe I should keep it for when weddings start to happen again 🤔
I really want to try this lens with my X-H1 to shoot my boys playing baseball. I just have never been sure if the AF would be up to the task.
To be honest. I’m not sure either. In bright light it should have no issues focusing on a batter or pitcher. It might have some misses if one of them is running towards you... I’ve never really tried focusing on something fast moving with it though so I can’t be trusted :)
FUJINON XF2X se le puede agregar?
Yes, I believe it does.
I sold my copy. Never happy with the quality at the 200mm end. Maybe a had a duff copy. I've recently bought a Nikon Series E 70-210 manual focus lens which I use with an adaptor. Way better optically.
It could be that I just didn’t pay enough attention/blow it up enough
@@TheLiamGordon At over £600 new my advice to anyone buying is to test optical performance. The Nikon E Series lens I paid £50 for is way better at 200mm.
Why is not good for outdoor sports?
It’s not that it’s not good for sports. A competent photographer could make great shots with it. There is just better suited lenses out there. But also they are usually more expensive.
It can be a little slow to focus compared to some full frame zooms I’ve used and it’s not par focal so it has to refocus when you are zooming in or out.
@@TheLiamGordon ok i got it thx. What about 70-300mm is it better for sports. I need a lens to shoot kiteboarding from a coast, i was thinking of buying 55-200mm because is affordable. On a FF Canon i use to have Tamron 100-400 mm and i didn't like it. Heavy and unreliable
@@kaiting1981 I don’t really know anything about the 70-300 I’m afraid.
Now that you’ve gave a bit more context, it sounds like this isnt a paid job in which case I always recommend going with the cheaper options. While it’s maybe not the perfect lens, it can get the job done without having to spend ridiculous amounts of money.
There are certainly people who have used the 55-200 for sports and if your camera is newer than an xt2 it may actually focus faster. I also think with kitesurfing you will be further away most of the time so it may actually perform quite well if you’re not constantly zooming from 55- 200mm.
Here’s a thread on a forum where some folks have used it for outdoor sports www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4322944
If you’re still unsure, try renting first. Sorry I don’t have a black and white answer to this.
@@TheLiamGordon you have been more than helpful with your answer, i will try to rent it. Hope i will find the right telephoto lens for my needs 😉
6:00 In other words, it's not par-focal.
That's a new word for me.
@@TheLiamGordon Oh well, should be parfocal and not par-focal xD Anyway, cheers.
Lens creep is a problem with this lens.
Anthony Da Vall I had to google what that meant 😂 my copy doesn’t seem to have that problem at all. The zoom ring is way to tight.
@@TheLiamGordon Give it time, it will go eventually.
fitzpb :( I guess I’ve got that to look forward to.
Simple effective solution: You know those plastic measuring cup/spoon kits that lay around in the kitchen?!.. I cut off the handle end (with that ring on the end...) and made a tiny little hook from the smallest of those plastic measuring spoons. (Heated it and bend it..) Attached a rubber band to its ring and the other end to the camera strap ring. Then just hooked it onto the edge of the lens hood. Done! I walk with my camera hanging down on my backpack strap in one of those handy brackets from Peak Design (and the zoom creeps out in a couple of seconds if my hook isn’t attached). So.. my Peak bracket mounting plate is usually always mounted under the camera and when I shoot, the hook is secured and fits snugly into (really disappears into the recess of) that bracket with the rubber band stretched over the lens and down under to the Peak mounting plate. No red hook or bright coloured rubber bands visible dangling around when shooting weddings 😂 NB! You may need numerous bands. I have three thin ones interconnected.
Tom Full better fix is a redesign.
Hi Liam,
Your review is unfortunately incorrect and misleading! Please excuse my very blunt introduction but I wanted to catch everyone’s attention to this matter. Maybe your review is indeed correct and it’s solely my copy of this corner to corner pin sharp lens that has no jerkiness when panning with the ois switched on! Or!..... Maybe you just didn’t know that one has to be in boost mode!... 😉 If not, a battery saving function kicks in after 10 seconds and the jerkiness starts. Pan (with ois on) whilst toggling boost mode on/off and you’ll see what I mean! 😁 Silk smooth ois in boost mode ...Kind Regards Anders Matzén, Sweden PS, if you like to make a video to fix lens creep for zoom lenses worldwide (major issue!!)
feel free to use my tip (at the remark below about that).
Tom Full Thanks for the info. I always preface with “this is not a highly technical review”. I wasn’t aware boost mode affects the lens ois so maybe that was the issue. I’m not a big video guy though and I’d encourage anyone looking at this lens for video to dive much deeper than my review and I’d assume they would as I talk mostly about photography... still no lens creep for me but I’ll give your technique a try when it does happen.
I don't understand - I hear "it isn't a versatile lens" - in the same breath as - "I always take it with me when I travel". There is a a lens snob problem with Fuji. The bias is always towards prime lenses. It is unfortunate. This Fuji lens is great. And - I will tell you - that with a few niche exceptions - pros use zooms - they are just more convenient than primes.
Me taking it with me when traveling wasn’t meant to portray that I found it versatile. I think a versatile lens would be something Id feel comfortable taking as my only lens. I always felt the 55-200 was a little longer than I wanted for general use but a lot of fun when the time and the light was right. That being said, for an avid longer focal length shooter, this may feel very versatile to them.
I will not lie, I trend towards primes myself. Specifically small primes for personal work and for me, that is far more convenient than carrying any larger zoom. However I do recognize that I have been doing this for a while and have wiggled myself into a very niche style. I also trend towards primes for professional use, although I do keep a 24-70 in my bag as a backup and I have used it a lot in the past.
I don’t believe there is a right or a wrong answer either way and I do try to remain as objective as possible while also putting my personal opinion out there. I’m not attempting to add to the snobbery out there.
@@TheLiamGordon I shot primes for a long time. Then I got tired of changing lenses to get the FL I wanted or trying to move around until I got the composition I wanted. I also started to feel like melting away backgrounds was holding me back from developing better composition skills. When you have the big aperture available it is just too tempting to twist the ring and make all composition issues disappear
Fockin Peaky Blinders...
Andratos95 I’m from a bit further north 🏴
Sounds rubbish, I'll give you £50 for it...Actually I think this will be my next lens. The 50 -140 is lovely but way too expensive. I have a few old lenses I use with an adaptor but they are fiddly to use.
Come pick it up, I’ll just give you it 😉
Not sure why you compare it to a Canon lens. We don't own a Canon, why would we care.
