Space Hunter Adventures in the Forbidden Zone is basically, "What if Han Solo landed on a Mad Max world".
Fist of the North Star clearly owes to Max, putting magical super kung fu in a very George Miller-looking post apocalypse.
I'd also like to see Steel Frontier, Equalizer 2000, Exterminators of the Year 3000, and She-Wolves of Wasteland.

Mad Max fans should check out The Ultimate Warrior (1975) with Yul Brynner. The mercenary played by Brynner is very much a blueprint for Max (this movie could be interesting if you ever do a list of post-apocalyptic movies that preceded Mad Max, like The Omega Man and Damnation Alley). The Book of Eli is my favorite Mad Max style movie.
IMO I think that Mad Max 2 and all the other films after are Miler's take on the new style of westerns.
Actually saw "Doomsday," It was pretty good!
There was no pretending with Waterworld. The cinematographer was Dean Semler, who shot The Road Warrior. Fun fact: Roger Corman was originally offered the concept for Waterworld but replied, "Are you crazy? That'll cost us $5 million!"
Of note, Semmler had recently won the Oscar for shooting Costner's Dances With Wolves and Costner chose him because of his wide-open space photography on Mad Max II.
Pity Corman didn't do it, at least it would have been a cheaper flop.
I loved 'Doomsday' as a teenager. Just an awesome late 2000s genre movie. I was obsessed with violent apocalyptic scenarios at the time, so it was perfect. Way underrated.
Check out the directors film Dog Soldiers... super fun and underrated.

That one about finding the last fertile woman in New York sounds more like a Hell comes to Frogtown ripoff.

One I found fun was Slipstream (1989), which is basically "Mad Max with Airplanes", starring Bill Paxton, Mark Hamill and Bob Peck.
When I was 10 years old, I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. There was a rough patch where I was hospitalized for a couple of weeks. Eventually I regained enough strength that they cleared me to leave the hospital for a few hours. The very first thing I did was go see a movie.
That movie was Waterworld.
My first time outside the hospital in weeks and I go and watch Kevin Costner drink his own piss.
To be fair, there's a great sci-fi movie buried in that mess.

Warrior of the Lost World and Steel Frontier deserve to be added to future lists. As does Battle Truck (Warlords of the 21st Century)

Battletruck was released before MM2.
It's not a true ripoff/clone.
A lot of these could exist in the same universe, just different parts of what remains of the world
"Mad Max" was such a pop culture thing that movies were not the only rip offs.
I am a huge pro wrestling fan. There was a tag team of two huge steroidal guys named The Road Warriors. Their ring gear face paint and spiky football shoulder pads. Road Warrior Hawk and Road Warrior Animal looked and growled exactly like Wez, the feral side kick of Lord Humongous in "The Road Warrior."
The Road Warriors' promos was all snarling, shouting and grunting. Their charisma was such that fans LOVED The Road Warriors. They are the tag team that has been ripped off the most.

Another interesting connection with "Salute of the Jugger' is that is also features Hugh Keays-Byrne in the cast, better known as the Toecutter and Immortan Joe.

That song at the end of Metal Storm should be played in In School Suspension Rooms on a Loop. So it gets stuck in their heads.
Mad Max is probably one of the franchises with the most imitators (especially the foreign one's like Italy with thos hilarious dubbing) plus that Road Wars will be getting a sequel to tie in with Furiosa (which ironically features Wez Venorn Wells in the antagonist role)

When you do your Escape from New York ripoff list, don't forget to include Lockout and Train to Busan 2: Peninsula
Lockout should be #1 on that list according to a court ruling!
My favorite Mad Max ripoff is The Postman. And 2015's Turbo Kid, while more of a parody/homage and less of a ripoff, is just a great little film altogether.

Bronx Warriors sounds like some of my favorite movies put into one. I'm embarrassed to say I've only seen Metal Storm, Escape from New York, Doomsday, and Water World. The others I've never even heard of and they look like my kind of 80's movies. I really liked Doomsday, which is like a Resident Evil Mad Max.
first list that I have seen most of the films. Have a soft spot for Water World. And Doomsday...Which is a rip off of . Escape from New York, 28Days Later, The Warriors, and Mad Max 2 to name but 4
... And just a smidgen of Robocop with the removable prosthetic eye that can record evidence. Useful for exposing the crooked boss in the end.
You knew right not to include Fist of the North Star. its earned its merit and to be fair George Miller turned around credited them by basically building Fury Road off of all the homages that FOTNS paid to him in the past without making Max into Kenshiro of course.
Nicely done. Always wondered if I'd see Circuitry Man on one of these lists. I love that movie but it never seems to get a mention.

A Boy and His Dog from 1975 and it had loner guy (Don Johnson) with his dog in a post apocalypse wasteland. Sound familiar? I really like Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, but it didn't invent the idea / theme of a lone dude battling it out in a desert wasteland. It added tons of car crashes with better costumes.

The thing that blows me away about all of these post-apocalyptic movies is al the leather. In the desert I would tray and wear as little clothing as possible or at least something breathable.
From memory, there was Cyborg (1989), Warlords (1988), Solarbabies (1986), Roller Blade (1986), Fist of the North Star certainly counts, as Kenshiro is wearing Max's MFP uniform, and all the badguys look like Wez and Lord Humungous. There's even an outright expie of The Toecutter. Does Terminus (1987), with Jimmy Halliday, count? Hell Comes to Frogtown (1988).
Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1983) is kind of in a category of its own, as it looks like Mad Max 3 if you replaced Max with Han Solo, but it actually came out before Beyond Thunderdome. So I guess it's like a reverse Metalstorm, isn't it? Also in 3-D. There was a whole Mad Max ripoff TV series called The Highwayman (TV Series 1987-1988). The Killing Edge (1984) might count, despite the lack of cars. We can let Deathsport (1978)(originally supposed to be a sequel to Death Race 2000), The Ultimate Warrior (1975), Damnation Alley (1977) and A Boy and His Dog (1975) off the hook, as they both preceded Mad Max and may have even influenced it. I guess Mindwarp (1991) might count? Neon City (1991)?
I think predecessors/likely inspirations might warrant their own category. *Alien* also has a bunch of those, despite pretty much defining its own subgenre once it came out. Ditto for *Halloween*, come to think of it.
Hardcore Max fans should try to find "Dead End Drive-In".
It's set in the very same world and takes place about the same time of Mad Max (1). A look at what things are like off the roads, in the city among civilians.

It's an interesting little film, and it manages to feel like it actually belongs in-universe.

Salute of the Jugger is a lot of fun. I suspect it was more of a take on Rollerball and NFL then Mad Max. The future being bleak rather than stainless steel in look.
Bronx Warriors definitely takes up after 1979s The Warriors way more than Mad Max - which honestly makes it a bit of an odd one out in all the post-apocalyptic DVD collections, since it's technically not one at all!

A special nod to Demolition Man and the people that live underground and for some unknown reason dress like Mad Max 2 extras which makes no sense.
And whom have a meticulous Olds 442 just sitting there......underground.....dust free....with a full tank of good gas......that starts on the first try. 😏

Whenever I think of Mad Max rip offs. I think of Exterminators of the Year 3000. I actually enjoyed that one a lot when I was a kid. Don’t even know where to find it nowadays, my parents had it on VHS. 😂

Mario and Luigi's last name has always been Mario.
The series is called "The Mario Bros." and for order for that to make sense, they either need to both have the first name Mario or the last name Mario.
Also, when you refer to a doctor, you use their last name (like Doctor Mario).
All the Movie did was bring up the series' naming convention.
That's on Myamoto for not work shopping the name better.

I remember watching Waterworld with my dad as a kid, wasn’t aware of Mad Max at the time but man that movie was cool to a 6 year old. Had to buy the poster a few years ago
5 mins: 'Unforgiven'. The Unforgiven is a 1960 film starring Burt Lancaster. (sorry to begin with a minor gripe. Other people have called the Eastwood film THE Unforgiven too 👍)

I had my fingers crossed for Exterminators Of The Year 3000, loved that as a kid. To be fair, it looked exactly like half of the movies on your list anyway.

I think it was hilarious that the actor that played Bob had to come out and say his dubbed voice in House by the Cemetery wasnt his real voice

I remember one called “Battletruck”… watched it on terrestrial tv back in the 80’s as a kid and thought it was good….. watched it on youtube recently and thought it was rubbish!!
Ah, Wheels Of Fire! Haven't seen that since the glory days of VHS, I was very fond of it as a teenage boy, not least because of Lynda Wiesmeier's, ahem, 'talents'. One great Mad Max rip off you missed is Exterminators of The Year 3000, I loved it back then, nowadays I can appreciate that it's a bit crap but I still remain fond of it. Thanks for the video, really enjoyed it!
This is not only the first list where I have seen every film on the list, the only one I didnt care for was Waterworld, but not only that this is my favorite sub genre of film.
How can you mention 1990 The Bronx Warriors and not talk about the guy playing the drums by the dead body. Cinematic Perfection explains where the background music is coming from.
Bronx Warriors is going to be featured on the '80s Project in the very near future, and i thought that tidbit was more interesting to highlight there, so you'll hear me talk about that in a few weeks.
The drums and the greatest line in the history of rubbish removal: "I love you Trash." That movie had it all.
Trivia about Salute to the Jugger also starred Hugh Keays-Byrne as Lord Vile who played the Toecutter from Mad MAX 1 and Immortan Joe from Fury Road.
Max Fairchild played Benno in Mad Max 1 and in Mad Max 2 as one of the guys caught and strapped to the Humongous Rigg and he played Gonzo in Salute to the Jugger.
Michael Preston played Pappagallo from Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior played Jared-Syn in MetalStorm. Tim Thomereson who played Rhodes acted with Mel Gibson in Air America years later along with Robert Downey Jnr who coincidentally worked with Vernon Wells from Mad Max 2 casting his same Mad Max 2 character in the film Wierd Science.
Another piece of Trivia Kentaro Miura the Japanese manga artist was partly inspired by this film and Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior for parts of his work on the manga Berserk.

Blade Runner also took place in 2019. So that's why it might be a popular year. I don't think I've ever seen Steel Dawn. I saw Waterworld in the theater and watched it on TV and have the Arrow release of the Ulysses cut. I think it's a blast.

Back in the Blockbuster rental days I would rent anything that even remotely resembled Mad Max type flix...seen most of these...low budget does not bother me one bit...subject matter is always more important than money / actors / cgi...

Manga author Buronson stated the setting of his manga and anime series Fist of the North Star was "heavily influenced by the film Mad Max."...Kenshiro's outfit was loosely based on Mel Gibson's costume from Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior

Not sure if they're Mad Max ripoffs but The FP movies are low budget films set on a dystopian future were gangs settled their disputes with........ well, Dance Dance Revolution like battles.
lol. they're fun movies. they definitely fit in here sort of. maybe less so than some other ones, but they definitely have some mad max vibes.

How did you miss mentioning that Rutger Hauer starred in Salute of the Jugger. He went on to be in Blade Runner too.
i have a recurring joke where i just refer to actors as film roles i recognize them from. i call Hauer "a hobo without a shotgun" because he was in the film Hobo with a Shotgun.

I recently watched Water World after first watching it as a kid years back and joked to a friend that it was basically Mad Max on water. Guess I wasn't far off.🤣
Number 9 is also called Blood of the Heroes (Krew Bohaterów) in Poland. It was quite popular on VHS and on TV in the 90's.
Fist of the North Star and JCVD's Cyborg should be on this list.
I saw Metal Storm and Waterworld in theaters and Blood of Heroes on vhs. I always felt Waterworld got a bum rap, I enjoyed it a lot
Waterworld I have always loved and I can watch it over and over again.
Doomsday I even went to see it was in cinemas and I found it amazingly good despite the mediaval input.
Post Apocalyptic are my favorite movies and comics..
It's totally blatant but Wheels Of Fire is my favorite of these. It's not a total clone but A Man Called Rage a.k.a. Rage could be lumped into this list.
Blood of Heroes is excellent.

I loved Wheels of Fire. One of my first VHS rentals after finishing school. Warrior of the Lost World is another Mad Max rip-off. It's very so bad it's good - the hero (Robert Ginty) even has his own talking speedcycle 😊

That movie sucks, the book is great they cut half the plot.. The Holistic leader was an augment a enhanced soldier and the old white guy in the movie who was a Vietnam war vet in the book wad black and leader of another group and was black and a augment who was trying to avoid war, there was an army of former Oregon State coeds who became army of sniper scouts who our hero also becomes romantic with..it wad great written by David Brian and audio book is free on utube

Bronx Warriors and Metalstorm are the only ones I haven't seen but I did just watch Stryker which was similar to Mad Max.
Watched Bronx Warriors. It’s more The Warriors meets Escape from New York but it had Fred Williamson who was in a ton of post apocalyptic movies.
Metalstorm was the only movie I ever actually walked out of. The 3d was so bad that my girlfriend and I both got headaches from it, and that along with the plot sucking just made for an exit maybe half way through.
