The song, the style, the band were all so awesome and new at that time that most people didn't understand it and it never became a hit, despite of the musical greatness and originality. It took them two years to realise the brilliance and importance of Blur.
This was the first Blur song I ever heard, and for the past twenty something years I’ve been a huge fan. Some things never change, and my appreciation for this amazing group that really introduced me to music as a child is one of them.

God I love this song. Given that we've seen a lot of cancelled albums finally released recently, perhaps the lost 1992 album will finally be released. It would be ideal for new fans who can't get this song without paying bucketloads for it, as well as Never Clever.
Blur said they never liked grunge and that Song 2 was making fun of it, but I mean look at the way they're dressed in this (especially Damon) and the lyrics! This song to me sounds pretty grunge , and it's from their earlier years.
This is definitely not grunge, you must be twelve or something, people dressed like that in the 90s, plus the lyrics are about Damon's life experiences I guess and we're talking about the silliness and disillusionment of the "popscene". So a more moody vibe was required, it's not just a Barr chord repeated over and over again and some bullshit lyrics like nirvana OT some crap. It's blur at their best.
