You folk in the US are so lucky to have most of the firearms you like. From a canadian gun lover living in scotland i salute you all and your 2nd ammendment
In over 23 years as a state correctional officer, (California) never heard of one jamming, not even on the range. All of our state prisons use this weapon.
My brother has worked for the CDCR for more than 15 years. I recall him saying when he qualified with the Mini, the sights were off, but if he held over, he would hit just fine. I like the gun, it is just that these days, an AR is way cheaper.
@@nimbly1693 Once the AR 15 lower is bought to have another cartridge you just assemble another upper then keep off the Biden ATF anti gun list. My AR 15 I have put together uppers in 17 Remington - 223 one with 18 inch barrel for a truck gun and a 223 in 20 inch barrel - 6mmx45 - 7.62x39 with all of them uppers functioning flawlessly for many years. My AR 10 uppers are in 6mm-284 win - 6.5 - 284 Norma - 375 - 325 WSM with the next AR 10 upper will be the 7 mm WSM.
@@Lure-Benson I have a PSA kit on an 80%. Next rifle I want is their KS47, AR in 7.62x39. I live in Oklahoma and think it would be a good pig hunting rifle.
@Craig Scott the three whitetail deer I have taken with head shots at ranges from 200 to 235 yards would argue your statement, and all three shots were witnessed by others. So yes they are most likely far more accurate than you.
Craig Scott ...at 50 meters 5” groups would be a toilet seat at best. It ain’t you. But 5” groups with an armorer accurized weapon in qualification is a error in itself. 3” groups are tolerated for basic marksmanship. It ain’t the weapon. And stop calling it a GUN fer’ cris’sakes please! Cheers!
Harry Rembe Semper Fi brother! That’s a keeper you got there! And yes they tend to shoot themselves. Dead on save for any barrel issues. It’s our job to help them along. Funny that guy is so lackadaisical he calls it a rifle and gun over and over. Sheeeshhh....Cheers!
Bought my mini 14 in 1984. Used it on patrol as a peace officer. The young boys came along with all their ar models with all the bells & whistles. They often laughed at my Ruger. I finally told them that my rifle could do everything theirs could do but for $900.00 less
@@buckfutter99 I have never shot an AR-15 that I liked at all.I Love the MINI-14 size, style,& feel.I was a State Law Enforcement Officer for 30 years here in Florida and we used the AR-15 and I just didn’t care for the feel at all.
@@buckfutter99 Care to elaborate? I also own both and have almost 3 years combat time with a AR so I'd say I'm very familiar with both platforms. The only thing I'd concede is the AR can shoot accurately at distance. If I'm honest though the AR's accuracy is beyond most peoples capabilities to shoot so its irrelevant.
ARs are crap just like m16 & nit wits worship junk! People who never used m16 bc they were not in military think m16 & ar are everything LOL. junk. You don't know anything 50 cal much nicer worked much better except you can't pick them up & take off with them. Your irrelevant LOL.Yep junkie ar are beyond your capabilities LOL.
I bought my factory folder mini 14 in 1986 new for $328.99 and still have it and it’s one of my favorite shooters. Well made, easy to disassemble and a blast to shoot. Great honest video!!
Ruger is an amazing company. My dad bought a .44 mag carbine when he was 12 owned it his whole life and when he passed we knew the stock had a crack in it so we contacted Ruger to see if they would fix it and told them cost was not important and explain the situation. The cleaned replaced parts and sent it back in a case with a very nice letter...for free. And again years later my wife's step mom had a .22 revolver she had got from her dad that ended up being stolen by one of my wife's younger sisters boyfriend...we did finally get it back but it was kept outside so it was cover in rust the handle had been used to bash something and was broken and the serial numbers scratch off...she herself was in the end of her life from COPD and it crushed her...and again Ruger the greatest of all American gun company comes through with another free repair. But this time the reblued the steel replaced the original serial numbers and sent it back in a new case with extra replacement handles and barrel and cylinders. These stories are as true as can be and because of it I will never buy a new gun unless it's a Ruger.
For years, I was a "Remington" guy. I owned several other guns but Remington was my favorite. Then I met my wife, and her Dad liked Ruger and got me turned on to them. I bought my first, a Mini 14, in 1982 for $205.00, while it is a bit of a misnomer, since the Mini 14 is not truly a miniature M14 (I carried an M14 for a while in the Army), it is close and it's a lot cheaper to shoot with ,223 in place of 7.62mm. But I like my Mini 14, it's an easy to shoot, easy to maintain, exceptionally accurate carbine. I also expanded my collection with a Ruger M77 in 7mm Rem Mag, which is a bit punishing to shoot because of the caliber, but it really impressed me, as it was hitting bullseyes at 500 yards, straight out of the box, never even needed any adjustments to the Bushnell Banner 3x9 variable scope I bought for it. As an Army Veteran who carried an M16A1/A2 during most of my 22 year career, and the owner of a couple of AR-15s, I can certify that the Mini 14 is much easier to field strip and clean, than any AR or M16 variant. I've also been impressed with Ruger's hand guns. I own a nice pair of "Red Hawks", one in .44 Mag and one in .357 Mag. I also had a "Security Six" in .357 Mag. as well as one of my recreational shooters, a .44 Cap & Ball Ruger "Old Army" for that "Old West feel.
Yep. I owned a Stainless mini-14 back in the 1980s. It was a great rifle. Never had a problem with it. In the 1990s I had a mini-30. worked great with factory magazines. Aftermarket magazines back then were junk.
I have a Mini 14 from the 1980s serial number prefix of 189. It has the notorious pencil barrel. Groupings pretty much grow the more rounds you put through it. After about 5,000 rounds I've never had a jam, so that's the great thing about the action. I've since installed an Accustrut to try and tame the barrel harmonics. I haven't shot it yet, but I am looking forward to seeing if it works.
The best gun for YOU is the gun that feels right to YOU, the gun YOU are comfortable with. These videos are great, they're informative and well researched, but when all is said and done, YOU are the one pulling the trigger. Great video, thanks! 👍
Totally agree, everyone has a different opinion based on their experience, I bought one back in the early 80's and it was very inaccurate, 6 to 12 inches from the bulls eye at 100 yards, but other people might have one that is accurate just depends on the rifle, oh I still have it been sitting for years, maybe I should sell it?
JoeandYong Perez the earlier models have much thinner barrels than the newer ones!! If you buy a new one look for the model number 58** they are way more accurate I’m shooting 3” groups at 300, which isnt that bad for me atleast
The insane anti-assault rifle crowd completely overlook the Mini-14 just because it has a wooden stock. Therefore it isn't considered an 'assault rifle'.
James Robert youre just making the argument to have all guns banned idiot, just shut up. how do you not see that "hurr durr the anti gun nuts dont realize its the same gun only has wood" is the same as "ban this gun too its the same as the ar15 that is already banned in cali im a idiot gunnut"
Did you read my comment? I totally hate any type of gun legislation because it only hurts people who actually obey laws. I'm just stating that the mini wasn't on the assault weapons ban under Clinton because it had a wooden stock. Which shows how ignorant they are.
Correct and not one of them will actually learn enough about the thing they want to ban to actually figure that out. Look at the FBI stats. In gun murders and crime all rifles (which includes so called assault weapons) make up only a tiny fraction compared to handguns. If they were smart they would ban handguns... But it's not like criminals can legally own them in the first place. Might as well ban murder... Oh wait that's already illegal.
Yeah, an AR15 is in no way more dangerous than a Mini-14. Both can have 30round mags and have same rate of fire. Banning something because of "looks" is asinine. Anyway, I believe in the concept of people bans, not gun bans. I have no idea why we are so politically correct that we would let some "self righteous, self entitled, mentally ill alt-left nutcase who wants to stick his cock in Bernie" from owning a firearm - it is these people that usually go on shooting rampages.
Thanks for your knowledge & perspective on the mini-14. I’m a 74 year old Viet Nam vet. I acquired an M-1 carbine from another helo pilot when he returned home. I loved it & passed it on when I left. Fast forward to 2009 & I bought a580 series mini-14 with synthetic stock in stainless. 10-22 is my favorite rifle, but also have a Ruger AR-15. I love Ruger products. They are an awesome company.
I had a M1 carbine. 30 cal ammo is damn Expensive! It was a fun gun not a use gun. Just basically didn't don't like it. But I'm not in combat so my perspective is different. Not good for wide open spaces but forest or jungle I can see its appeal. Also the lighter ammo has a appeal. In a bad situation no 9ne says " I have to much ammo" Like in a mass shooting no one says " thank God I don't have a gun, someone might get hurt"
Thank you for your service.. I've been looking for a m1 carbine.. man this are hard to find.. I think I might get me a mini 14.. I had one 20 years ago.. stainless and wood stock.. I sold it and had never shot it.. dumb mistake.. take care
Can't go wrong with a Ruger mini-14 It is proven rugged and reliable. I still don't own an AR, mini-14 is my battlerifle till I get my hands on a factory reproduction of the BAR in synthetic and stainless.
Glad to hear you had great experience with Ruger customer service too. I wanted a wood stock for my Mini 14 and all the places I looked at had blues hardware and my rifle is stainless. I call Ruger and order the new stock with shipping for less than the other places. When it was delivered, I found out they had sent me a stock with blued hardware, so I called Ruger and asked them to send me stainless parts and they did so free of charge. Ruger’s customer service is wonderful.
I have a early 1980s Mini and I have three cross platform magazines they're not made by Ruger. I can't remember where I picked them up but they do work in both rifles, but when out of ammo in the AR the magazine doesn't drop free you have to strip it out with your hand.
Many years ago, my cousin invited me to shoot steel targets on a north Texas ranch. He and his buddies had bolt-action .30.06 and .270 rifles. I only had only one long gun at the time. It was a Ruger MIni-14 manufactured in about 1980. They shot the steel targets, and every time they hit the target, they got a loud "clang." When they asked me to shoot my "mouse gun", it went bang, but the steel target did not move. We put our rifles on safe, and walked one hundred yards to look at the steel targets. Only the 55 grain .223 Rem from my rifle penetrated the targets -- a tiny .22 caliber hole in the steel. The fellow who hosted the shoot, yelled out loud "Who's going to fix those plates". He relented after I offered him a case of cold Lonestar Beer.
Enjoyed your presentation. When I was stationed in Wyoming in the early 70s I used to see local cops with their Model 94s on the range. The would shoot, top off the gun, move, then shoot again...very tactical in an age before tacticool. I like Mini-14s, they work fine, some better than others...but all rifles are like that. My favorite Mini-14 was the series of Ranch Rifles with the fold down sights...I generally put a 2.5X scope on mine. I also liked the Mini-30s, but I never had one that was really accurate, although more than accurate enough for deer in the woods.
I bought a ranch style back in college, fell in love with the thing when I saw it on the rack. That has been my go to every time. Ones had someone complain they had to reach around to chamber a round after reload, I simply asked them, "is your thumb broke ????" Lol
I'm still tempted to buff it to a mirror shine like the older minis used on the show but I'm pretty sure keeping it shiny would be a huge pain in the ass.
I need to make a video about dealing with them. Not that Rugers are prone to breaking but I own quite a few of them and most have been used and abused for 50-60 years before I bought them. Every time I have needed anything they have been awesome. Including one time I managed to wreck a brand new GP100 and admitted it was my fault and they fixed it for free.
I have a 42 year old Super Blackhawk in 44 Mag that had rattled itself loose after countless rounds and when it needed a new base pin they sent it to me for free within two days of me asking for one to purchase. I then received an email from them saying that if it needed work even after they sent me the new base pin to send it in on their dime and they would get it back to me in Tip-Top shape. truly an awesome American company.
Thomas Pyles clearly you didn't watch the video. If there is a PROBLEM with the GUN that RUGER made, their CUSTOMER SERVICE will make it right. Do you need reiteration on my original comment, or are you incapable of basic comprehension?
There are cases of people sending in worn out guns, such as GP100's form the early 90's with near 100k rounds, and offering a new gun at factory cost since the gun would have needed a new frame, new gun under federal law.
A company that has been around for decades and will fix any issue for free is a big deal. Some, like Taurus, will make you pay shipping to them and it might take a couple trips before it is fixed which can mean over $100 in shipping and a the gun spending a combined time of a couple months getting fixed. Meanwhile if a Ruger breaks they rarely need to be sent back more than once for the same issue and come back like new.
My dad bought my Mini in 84 and gave it me me in 94. I couldn't tell you how many rounds have been put through it but we hunted jack rabbits every 2nd or 3rd weekend during Utah's summer months for 5 years and burned through all the extra ammo at the end of the day and I still put 200-300 rounds through it a year so it has to be many 1000's of rounds. It still runs like a clock, doesn't jam or misfeed as long as I'm running my good mags and factory ammo and I can still hit a rabbit at 100 yards with the peep sights and that's about as far as I can see without a scope anyways. I couldn't ask for better even if I had paid for it.
I'm retired LE ordnance officer/firearms/tactics instructor. I own both the Mini-14 and the Mini-30 in stainless steel. Having carried and qualified with the M-16, M-4, H&K G-36 and the M-1A I am confident that I can meet any threat that I trained for with my service weapons. As I now reside in an environment with wet weather on a regular basis, the stainless steel builds are convenient, in that I don't need to strip and clean as often, as I normally carry one of these weapons while I patrol my boundaries. They also tend to be less "Intimidating", compared to the scary black rifles of myth and legend............................................................
Only a fool would consider any firearm "less intimidating" than any other firearm. I bet no one who has been shot before ever makes this naive mistake. The human mind is hilarious!
Well sure, a .22 can kill a man too, but that doesn't take away the fact that people tend to be less alarmed by a "looks like granpops old rifle" mini 14 than by a "super tacticool pistol grip with lasers and rails" AR-15. We can pretend it's the same, because of function, but we know it isn't, because of looks. It's gun racism, if you think about it 🤔
@@ericdpeerik3928 I think the AR-15 has also gotten a bad rap because of all the weirdos in tactical gear parading around with them in public LARP-ing they're soldiers and trying to sound tough. The school shooters using ARs also made it scary for folks. And with so many images of M-4s from the GWOT that gave people the association that it's just for war and mass shootings. It's really too bad the image problem they have as they are great guns and anyone I've ever introduced to shooting them really liked them. I like the Mini-14 as well. It has a nice feel and I do like wood furnishings for nostalgic reasons I suppose & I think it has a nice balance to that's just comfortable. A friend of mine has an M-1 carbine and I just love it. I liked this video because I hadn't ever thought of the lever actions as carbines before. Dad has a Winchester and a Marlin 35 that was my favorite shooting rifle growing up. I like the side ejection rather more than the top ejection myself.
I had a Mini way back before the "A" Team used them. (Right after they came out) It was all you say except it was a 3 MOA gun. At that time I shot in competition and was "up" on rifles. AN M1 was a tack driver as was an Ar15. Expecting similar from the little Mini, I was deeply disappointed and sold it. I almost bought a Mini30....but resisted. I would love to test one, but not at retail.
A great weapon. Really just an evolution of the Garand action as you point out. Basically a more modern M1 carbine. I've been considering a Mini 30 for quite some time, already have enough AR platform stuff.
Gun ownership can be like religion and politics, total tunnel vision that their opinion is the only correct one. I think the mini-14 joins the vintage combat rifle with a handy carbine size. I hope it's around for years to come. I like the AR platform too, there's room for both.
I think both are fun guns. The AR is more flexible and definitely cheaper in today's market. But if all you need is a gun for plinking or varmint hunting or don't want to add a bunch of tactical accessories. the mini is a great gun.
An AR is only cheaper if you have amazing self control. It is just too easy to add on little trinkets. My AXTS Raptor Ambidextrous Charging Handle came in last week. Oh well.
surfing636 Ruger Mini 14s in military configurations have been and are probably still in the armories of any number of South and Central American countries. As I recall there were newspaper articles in the early and mid 1960s that said the US was supplying military support to X countries, read distributed under the auspices of the CIA. Those were select fire models with a 30 round banana magazine. I would love to have one. And an M1E carbine.
When I was in the Army at Ft Polk LA, I bought a blued Mini-14 for $250.00! I must have put 50,000 rounds through it and it work flawlessly! Sold it to a Army buddy and now I wish I had it back!
I think you're doing a grand job and don't worry about what people say. I was in the military for a few years using the M16 and I don't care for that platform, I like the M1 carbine and other platforms, that's my preference I don't care what other people think. You keep doing whatever it is you feel happy with.
A practical consideration between Mini & AR platforms and self defense. In a court of law, if there is a 'excessive force' from the victim component, the Mini appears much more benign to non-gun jurors than the 'evil black AR', despite fact both shoot same cartridge and have similar magazine capacities.
No matter how stupid the jurors may be, if that ever happened you'd just need to tell your lawyer to get a gun expert to testify and explain how stupid that argument would be. You'd win the case easy because if it went down to that it meant that the prosecution had no other arguments. What you need to worry is if the shooting was justified, because the prosecution will want to make it seem like you had no business taking the shot. If it's been established you were justified, they're grasping at straws.
Filipe Amaral An entire country was fooled into banning guns solely for cosmetic appearance. A Model 1907 Winchester in cal. .351, with optional 25 round magazine, ergonomically discharges projectiles in exactly same manner as the latest 'evil' black rifle with bayonet lug and flash suppressor, that is one bullet out the barrel with each single pull of trigger, but media and politicians fooled sheep, that looks could kill.
Dor Aran A country isn't a courtroom. Say what you want about the court system, but your voice is heard much louder than in congress. That's why the supreme court is such a big deal. If people are literally told to their face, heck, shown videotapes of the guns working so it gets through their thick skulls, and they still want to nail you, that's because they didn't like your face and wanted to nail you anyway. They'd nail you if you had a Mini-14. They just didn't like you because if the evidence is right there and they say guilty, that's prejudice.
Filipe Amaral An anti-gun elected prosecutor in a very blue district, couldn't care less about justice. He just wants's to lynch an otherwise law abiding gun owner and an 'evil black' rifle will just make his case with hoplophobic sheep in his voting base. Not saying it's right, it's just reality.
Straight up, I agree with you ! Partial to the Mini 14 myself ! Not to mention, it has the benefits of the same ammo as the AR, without being vilified !
Others have said it better .... I love these gun videos. I hate "gun snobs" who *think* they know stuff they don't. The Mini (either flavor) is a great platform and serves multiple purposes well.
I’ve got several decked out ARs that I love. But I love my K (stainless) Mini 14 for a lot of reasons. Besides the fact that it’s utterly reliable without cleaning for months at time and thousands upon thousands of rnds, it looks cool and there’s something about it that gets me in the same way I love my lever guns. It’s just robust and feels good. I like the slower push recoil instead of the snappier ARs. Dunno just like it a lot. 💥👍🇺🇸🍿
Yeah I don't think people understand, any mini-14 made after 2005 is a completely different rifle. A grade A reliable, super accurate and handy rifle great for home defense. The simple old and tested action and design makes it last too. It's been almost 20 YEARS so sad the old Mini's reputation has stuck on so many people because it is such a fantastic gun, genius idea and it's always better than those cheapo AR's around the same price range. Although any AR that's more expensive and if it's a solid one certainly out classes the Mini, for it's price, that's what really makes it stand out. Such a great rifle for what you pay for, especially if you're buying it used. My family and friends never bought them brand new, they used to be super easy to find second hand and worked like a charm as long as it was made after 2005.
@@brucekendall9873 Home defense? I guess if you want to pass rounds through the intruder and into God knows who it would be ok for that. Best to stick with pistols and shotguns indoors. Especially if your neighbors are close.
Bought my first Mini back in 87 the day after the Stockton school shooting, expecting the prices to surge! Well in California they didn't! They just stopped selling them, so yeah, my rifle is worth a lot more now...
Had one in the '80's. Traded it for an M1 Carbine. The Mini 14 was super and fun. It is the Smaller (Mini) version of the M14 which was the first Cold War US rifle and saw service in Viet Nam.
Nice job. Thanks for a good factual presentation, and your own enthusiasm for the rifle definitely shows. Thanks for leaving out the usual god awful heavy metal music we usually get at the beginning of gun videos, and for leaving out the Hateful politics we’re usually subjected to.
I've been looking at the Mini 14 for a while now. All my handguns are Rugers, and I'm ready to make the jump to the longer members of the family. Thanks for the info!
I just got one a couple weeks ago but have not had the chance to shoot it yet. I liked the price on it $600 and it came with a dust cover and forward assist
Tiffany Waller I've had one since it came out, only put over 500 rounds through it so far, but it works fine. Only downside is the threaded delta ring.
Ruger's CSR has always treated me well. It's unfortunate, I had to call them at all (4x for different reasons), but at least whenever I did, they took care of the issue really quickly, on their dime, was professional, and courteous each time. Most of my guns are Rugers now.
I've used a Mini-14 for over 25 years. The latest version has that cheap rear sight, just like the one you have. I really liked the older style sight that was similar to the M-14. IMO, other than the "newer" sight, it's a good weapon.
Nice pick-up. Great old-school look and simple functionality, combined with new school bullet improvement ballistics. Plus it doesn't look scary so it must not be evil.
The Ruger Mini-xx Ranch Rifles are great platforms. I don't suffer "AR-15 snobs" or any of the other (SKS, AK, etc) snobs very well. I've shot 'em all. None of them suck! :)
One thing I like about the mini is if you have good mags they don't jam regardless of whether they have been cleaned or not. You could probably roll around in the mud with it, and it would probably still shoot. 30 years ago the stainless ones were about 300.00 and the blued 270.00.
Just bought an older one and I love it. My son and I were putting shots on paper at 200 yds using only steel sights. I’ve owned several ARs and had always wanted one of these. Next is the M1A....
Thanks for posting! $500 isnt bad for a functional Mini. While I don't have a Mini now I once owned 5 of them, one stainless and another tricked out with a scope and flash suppressor.. They were nice little carbines, but they went down the river when I started to get interested in the AR15 and Springfield's M1A (still one of my all-time favorite rifles). While not a "perfect platform" the Mini fills a lot of gaps in the personal arsenal. At the time the AR15 was exorbitantly expensive and the Mini wasnt. These days the price of the Mini has risen a lot while the AR15s have dropped into the price niche once held by the Ruger Mini-14. There are a lot of after-market bits available and easily installed for the AR- and the AR is available almost universally, while the Mini-14 remains proprietary. The stainless option available for the Mini is worthwhile especially in wet climates. Some have said that the Mini is inaccurate, perhaps due to barrel harmonics and the way the action and barrel sit in the stock, and several cures or antidotes are available at a rather high price. I never found any of my Mini's inaccurate, and found that a 4X scope increased accuracy and range. "Accuracy issues" had nothing to do with why I replaced my Mini's with other civilianised 5.56X45 caliber rifles and carbines and have never looked back. Still the Mini filled a gap in my personal rifle selection and helped me learn the so-called "assault rifle" genre.
I'll take a mini 30 over 14 as well. Just know till you do some work you are stuck shooting brass case ammo. It takes a Wolf spring and some work on the bolt and firing pin to run the cheap stuff. Once you get it just right though it sings.
I like my mini 14 so much I also bought the mini 30. One synthetic stock stainless and the other wood stock. They are both fun rifles. I also own an AR15 which I also like, they are just different and fun to have variety to shoot.
The M1 carbine was meant for non-frontline troops like truck drivers, support etc. Just meant to give these rear troop something better than their .45 but easier to lug around than a full size battle rifle.
I really like the Mini 14. I used to own that exact same one until they got banned in my country along with all semi auto long arms. Great video. Cheers
@Steven Soco , Every industry is about MONEY. If a company doesn't make money, there is no compny. Prices reflect what customers are willing to pay. So I'll ask again, what is the value of a gun when you need it to defend your life? If you think your phone or i pad should cost more, I envy your life experience.
Yea but ar 15 are at all time low the market is saturated same ar that cost 1500 15 years ago is only 750 now I just built a Anderson lower with saber defence upper for 450 bucks in 6.5grendel!!
@@luckyred1818 My odds of needing a phone when I get in a wreck. Or calling 911 if I hurt myself is much higher than my chance of a gunfight... I love my gun, wouldnt cut my phone out of my life and feel safer. If gunfights are your daily worry I would not need you to concern yourself for my experiences.
I never engaged you Dakota, nor did I question your life experience; but since we're in a discussion--not everyone has the option to call for help, or would if they could. I have 120+ acre ranch and encounter predatory animals daily. I also frequent a city where human predators are freequent. I ccw more than my phone because responce times are a joke, and I believe in self sufficiency, which was once the standard. Constant communication is an unnecessary luxery when you're self-sufficient, and a joke to those that are. Deduce what you will.
Great weapon, just don't put a scope on it. They get beaten to death. Recoil kills them in a few hundred rounds. Haven't tried a reticle as I was advised against it. It's a cut down M-14 as it's built with the same mechanics.
I owned a Mini 14 back in the 80's. Was out shooting one day when it failed to fully chamber a round and the bolt wasn't in battery. Without noticing the problem I pulled the trigger on the next round and the case exploded, gas and propellant shot back into my face. Thankfully I was wearing hearing protection and glasses. I had a number of small spots on my face that were bleeding. Up until that point I had put thousands of rounds downrange without issue. Still a good rifle and this type of problem could happen to anyone
I really like my mini 14. When I first got my mini 14 it would group at a hundred yards a 3 Moa. I bought a barrel strut from ruger. It's an integrated Barrel strut . In other words is all one piece it don't have the set screws. That way you don't have to worry about it slipping. So now I'm grouping 1 moa at 100 yards . I still have some more work to do to it. But it's an awesome rifle. And I would stack it up against any high dollar AR . The action the receiver has been around since the 30s. Such as the M1 Garand the M1 carbine the M14 and M1A, M 21. Socom 16 which are still in service . it's battle-proven battle-tested like I said it is still being utilized today.
I own two rugers; AR556 and NRA Edition Mini 14. I have plenty of experience with AR platforms being former army and I absolutely love the mini. The tactical versions are very worth the price and you'll find they much easier to keep clean and maintain than the AR. The modern minis do not have the accuracy issues that the older models have. Also a tip if you own one of these, spend the extra money on factory magazines. They are the most reliable and pretry easy to reload. I recently put a ggg / burris fastfire III on mine and its perfect for this style rifle. You can't go wrong with a mini 14
Yeah, I have some factory mags, they feed perfectly, of course I also have a bunch of the garbage, no name mags which everyone claims to not work at all, they feed,,,,,,, perfectly.
I also have two Ruger in my arsenal - the GSR .308 bolt-action rifle and the Mini-14 in the .223. And I am going to buy a Ruger Precision Rifle in a .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor. Excellent weapon and I am very pleased with the quality.
I own an AR in M16 retro style and a M1A/M14. They are MY two favorite rifles. But I understand your point of view when comparing a Mini 14 to the AR carbine. The wood stock on the mini has much cleaner lines then the M4. The M4 buttstock has too many angles compared to the Mini, or a full size M14 stock. This is why my AR is an A1 the lines are much cleaner. A Mini is on my wish list. Keep 'em in the 10 ring.
politicalsheepdog Yep your right dog I carried one as a police officer but all the agency's I know of dumped them for AR 15's because the mini was not very accurate and not very reliable.
I had one that used to be the property of the Maryland State Penitentiary. Stock was dinged up but the barrel was like new. They hardly ever shot those things.
I have owned 2 mini14s over the years. Only issue I have with them is that the cost has gone up way too high. I don't think they are worth the 700 plus price on them now.
Most after market mags are usually not going to work in the Mini 14. The thin barrel and poor harmonics will make you insane when shooting for tight accuracy. The rounds will start stringing as the barrel heats up fast. Yes there is the heavier barreled Mini but it too lacks luster. I owned 3 Mini's and these guns are fine for a plinker, truck gun or home defense but if you are an above average shot wanting tack driving target accuracy don't waste your money. My other Mini issue is that the firing pin isn't a drop in part like other platforms (break one and you'll see what I'm talking about). After market main ignition part support? Ha! Good luck. I eventually sold all 3 of my Mini's for more capable alternatives but the Mini did serve me well overall to be fair. I can honestly say one of the Mini's strong points is RELIABILITY, never had a jam in any of mine.
Yes the older barrels were inaccurate and had heat stringing issues. I don't have hard numbers but chuck hawks got .77-1.5 MOA from a new model with just a trigger job. www.chuckhawks.com/ruger_mini14_review.htm You can also buy or build an accustrut to help with stringing on the old models. I have quite a few aftermarket mags and most seem to run fine in my Mini. I just made a video of the AR/Mini combo mags I have. They ran fine in both guns. ruclips.net/video/sAPltO3qBTk/видео.html I just bought a Gen 3 Tapco and will test it soon. I haven't had any issues with broken parts on my mini but when I have broken a Ruger gun they have given me the parts for free. Fitted parts do require trips back to Ruger but if it's that big of an issue you can always buy spares from Numrich. Personally if I do manage to break mine I'm more than happy to send it back to get fixed for free. I do agree 100% that these aren't match guns and if you want to use it for that you should probably just buy an AR or a quality .223 bolt gun.
I always have found Ruger weapons to be reliable and accurate. If you run out of ammo while hunting, simply club the beasts with the heavy stock provided, the blood will not rust the stainless version.
I loved my mini stainless..should have never let it go..I still have two stainless 30 round clips new in the package. I plan to get another but I want the blued ranch
I owned a stainless mini-14 and it wouldn't hit anything except the ground. I knew a guy that owned one at it was accurate. Why the difference? I like the feel and mine didn't jam. It simply would not stay on target. I returned mine and bought a Bushmaster AR-15 which shot 2 inches at 100 yds out of the box with open sites.
Older ones had a pencil barrel that would whip due to poor harmonics and string shots as the barrel heated. You could pop on an accustrut and see if that fixes it. I've heard good things.
I can attest to the merit of the Accu Strut. I dont know how your Mini 14's perform but this is what I get with mine and others that I have shot. When cold you can shoot decent 3 shot groups, 5 shot groups are much more difficult because usually one is a flier, and those fliers are random, the Mini 14 does not heat string like some other guns, its fliers are random. When they get hot the propensity for fliers is much higher, and getting even a good 3 shot group becomes more luck than anything. Original mini's had a nominal barrel thickness of .560, new ones have a .625 nominal barrel thickness. An M4 "pencil barrel" like the 14.5" FN CHF barrel I used for my ultralight build are .625 nominal and .750 at the gas block. So all Mini's other than the target version has a barrel wall thickness equal to or less than the thinnest of M4 barrels. Like Gunsshot said the thin barrels whip like crazy when fired, the massive oprod causes harmonic chaos because of the thin barrel and huge amount of moving metal. The barrel profile really doesnt matter much for the AR-15, My carbine shoots cold, hot, whatever, its hot groups are a little larger than cold but its predictable, and its repeatable. The accustrut does not fix the problems the Mini 14 has, the barrels are still too thin for an oprod gun, the harmonics suck the barrel on the Mini 14 is exposed to all sorts of external forces from the Stock and Oprod. The accustrut does help, It normalizes the harmonics of the gun so the difference in the node patterns shot to shot is reduced, making it more consistent and therefore more accurate. My brother in laws Mini 14 still shoots fliers with boring regularity but instead of being within 4-5" of the last shot in any direction, the gun consistently sends the fliers up about 2" and a little left. And that I can work with. So the Accustrut made his gun a whole lot more predictable. I do have to say that it didnt cure the fliers completely, every once in a blue moon his mini will shoot significantly off, Ive only seen it twice and both times it was enough to completely miss the 8" shoot and see targets at 100yds. I would trust my AR-15 to make a shot that had a small margin of error. I cant say the same thing about the Mini 14 even with the Accustrut I cant trust it to put rounds where I am aiming. Imagine a hostage situation, you have to take a critical shot with almost zero margin for error, do you want a gun that suffers from regular and typically unpredictable fliers?
Every Ruger rifle that I have owned needed tweaked to shoot accurately out of the box. My Bushmaster fired accurately and without jamming right out of the box. My 10/22 is the only one that I bought with the intent of putting a new barrel on it. I will avoid Ruger rifles from now on.
The mini-14 was one of my work tools, so I bought one for home use. I find it’s a great weapon, easy to keep on the ATV, quick and reliable. Dropped a lot of coyotes and jack rabbits with it.
Love my minis, they’re dependable just like my landcruisers! Yes there are more modern vehicles that take cool accessories but none of them are as dependable!
Mini 14...is a bad Ass little gun... Balance is Great... and Easy to Handle.. plus shoots the 223...Rip and tear... thank you for video.... and remember Loud Pipes saves lives
James Carter LOUD PIPES ARE BACON MAGNETS. WHY ALERT THE PIGS TO WHERE YOU ARE IF YOU RIDE LIKE ME ? MAN, WHAT ATE YOU THINKING ? LOUD PIPES GIVE YOU TICKETS ! 🚓
I love my mini 14 over my AR15 The mini is much more tolerant of reloads. It just doesn't care. the AR 15 simply does not like reloads. Its best with factory loads. The AR 15 is more accurate out of the box. You have to work the mini 14 front site down to get more accuracy. This is just my opinion. I don't intend to change anyone's mind.
Try putting a 6 x 9 variable scope on it.. Have it installed and bore sighted by a gunsmith and then fine tune and dial it in to get the best range and tack driving shots at 200 yards or more.. That is way better than open factory sights.. You can also try aimpoint sights.. Once you find the right sight for that gun, you will like it even more... Once you got it set up be damn careful, and don't drop it..
minis cost the same amount as an AR15 accuracy between the two platforms is the same. accesssories if you need a bunch of shit hanging off your gun to use it youre an idiot.
Thanks Chris..... I have the same rifle in my safe. I LOVE that little guy. Fun to shoot, affordable to plink and just a joy to hold.... I applaud your review. Weav

@James Jones please please please Don't let it happen my man! We ain't allowed to have pellet guns without a licence so Keep the Real Ones👍👍👍
So unfortunate for you buddy. Some people’s right not to like and own guns trampled on your right to like and own guns.
Yes, you guys need to get those rights to be equally armed! Government is the people, NOT the just police and military.
We have the freedom to buy weapons for now, but this freedom is more and more limited by socialists in Congress and corrupt Democrats in the field.
Thank you. Come on over anytime. We need people like you to maintain the freedoms we enjoy. Your better than at least 33% of those born here.
In 762x39 or 556 223
I have a newer mini, It does jam on occasion…maybe 1/150
@@nimbly1693 Once the AR 15 lower is bought to have another cartridge you just assemble another upper then keep off the Biden ATF anti gun list.

Cheers!

Bought my mini 14 in 1984. Used it on patrol as a peace officer. The young boys came along with all their ar models with all the bells & whistles. They often laughed at my Ruger. I finally told them that my rifle could do everything theirs could do but for $900.00 less
I own both. It 100% can’t do the same thing as an AR especially if it older like yours.
But you know better.
Brought mine in 1976, stainless for $ 367.00
@@buckfutter99 I have never shot an AR-15 that I liked at all.I Love the MINI-14 size, style,& feel.I was a State Law Enforcement Officer for 30 years here in Florida and we used the AR-15 and I just didn’t care for the feel at all.

That’s sooooo cool. I called Ruger to get a few replacement parts. They sent them right away. No charge. Greatest company ever!😎🇺🇸
That is such a great story
Ruger has incredible customer service.
They USED to be
The mini-14 and the mini-30 are great rifles. Anyone who hates on them has probably never shot one.
They're good little ranch rifles.
But they heard it from a friend who knew a guy who had one in the 1980s that they were bad....
Gun&ShotTV I still have a 80's production Mini-14 stainless rifle. Never have had any issue at all.

+H.G. C. Right you are.

Thank you for your service.
In a bad situation no 9ne says
" I have to much ammo"
Like in a mass shooting no one says " thank God I don't have a gun, someone might get hurt"
Thank you for your service.. I've been looking for a m1 carbine.. man this are hard to find.. I think I might get me a mini 14.. I had one 20 years ago.. stainless and wood stock.. I sold it and had never shot it.. dumb mistake.. take care
Can't go wrong with a Ruger mini-14
It is proven rugged and reliable. I still don't own an AR, mini-14 is my battlerifle till I get my hands on a factory reproduction of the BAR in synthetic and stainless.
I’ve had mine for 37 years. Best .223 rifle ever made. I’ve got a couple 20 round clips. Don’t need an AR.
If Ruger could make a Mini-14 version that would accept AR-15 mags, they would sell a million of them. Makes you wonder why they haven't.
I think it’s because they make so much on the magazines. I think I have four and they were all around $35.
It may be a reliability issue. Some designs just will not function with a fundamental change.
The Mini-14 doesn't have a pushbutton magazine release.
I have a early 1980s Mini and I have three cross platform magazines they're not made by Ruger.
I can't remember where I picked them up but they do work in both rifles, but when out of ammo in the AR the magazine doesn't drop free you have to strip it out with your hand.
Maybe it's because they don't want to have anything to do with an "assault rifle".
You're right, that stainless and wood combo looks really nice.
I find the stainless mini 14's more accurate, and the parts also fit better...less finagling to assemble/disassemble.
Many years ago, my cousin invited me to shoot steel targets on a north Texas ranch.
He and his buddies had bolt-action .30.06 and .270 rifles.
I only had only one long gun at the time. It was a Ruger MIni-14 manufactured in about 1980.
They shot the steel targets, and every time they hit the target, they got a loud "clang."
When they asked me to shoot my "mouse gun", it went bang, but the steel target did not move.
The Mini is a damn solid rifle, easy to operate, affordable, and plenty accurate.
I love the TOOL profile pic. Spiral out brother.

Ones had someone complain they had to reach around to chamber a round after reload, I simply asked them, "is your thumb broke ????" Lol

rugers customer service is second to none. they are fast and get things done right.
Mini 14 makes a whole lotta sense for us in NY. By the time you hobble the AR 15 you end up with a cartoon gun.
While I'm sure there have been some lemons that got sold, the majority of mini owners echo your sentiment.
the mini 14 , does what it says on the tin , no frills , just works .

Great for practical rifle !.

Oh well.
Amen to that. Both have pro's and con's. Get both and be happy! I know I would.
erozpl01 really you know what a m1A1 is same action
surfing636 Ruger Mini 14s in military configurations have been and are probably still in the armories of any number of South and Central American countries.
But with inflation that $250 was worth quite a bit more.
I'll sale you one for $1500.00
@Mike N I dont have a $500 rifle, I have a $1500 rifle, that's why
That is a consideration but it's unlikely that SD outside the home will be with a rifle rather than a handgun.
Straight up,
I agree with you !
Partial to the Mini 14 myself !
Not to mention,
it has the benefits of the same ammo as the
AR, without being vilified !
Others have said it better .... I love these gun videos. I hate "gun snobs" who *think* they know stuff they don't. The Mini (either flavor) is a great platform and serves multiple purposes well.
I have two ARs but I love My mini. I have a 58 series just as accurate as my ARs
It's just a cool little American rifle. Wish I could own one myself.
Ruger customer service is top notch. They helped me out a few times. They earned my loyalty.
Had one in the '80's. Traded it for an M1 Carbine. The Mini 14 was super and fun. It is the Smaller (Mini) version of the M14 which was the first Cold War US rifle and saw service in Viet Nam.
I had a mini14 years ago and I loved it ... I now have the Mini30 all dressed in scary black plastic
I mostly love the Mini-14 for how it looks and feels. It is an older looking firearm, that looks at home in a hunting cabin or on the mantle.
Thanks Chris, I appreciate your no frills review and your opinion of the Mini-14.
Stainless M-14 screams A-Team. Love it
I love it when a comment comes together
$500!? I've been looking into a mini 14 but can't find one for cheaper than $850, and that's for a used one. Where can I find this $500 unicorn?
I love my Mini. Always reliable, never an issue, accurate, I love the action. No complaints.
They also offer the AR556 which is a great rifle for the money.
I just got one a couple weeks ago but have not had the chance to shoot it yet. I liked the price on it $600 and it came with a dust cover and forward assist
Tiffany Waller I've had one since it came out, only put over 500 rounds through it so far, but it works fine. Only downside is the threaded delta ring.
you have compile the most rifles I really love in one video, but if zombie apocalypse is coming, i choose mini 14
Ruger's CSR has always treated me well. It's unfortunate, I had to call them at all (4x for different reasons), but at least whenever I did, they took care of the issue really quickly, on their dime, was professional, and courteous each time. Most of my guns are Rugers now.
The new Hawkeye rifles with the lc6 triggers are top notch as well.
most of your guns are Rugers ? now that they have dealt with the quality control issues? doesn't sound like the 'Ruger' i know!
I've had great luck with all my OEM mags, yes they are pricey but they work great and you can find used examples cheap if you look close enough.
I love the mini 14 I’ve got three of them amazing little weapons

The M1A is also on my list. It's one heck of a weapon.
I got my mini in 1997 and it still works like New it's a great rifle, I tell you what.

Still the Mini filled a gap in my personal rifle selection and helped me learn the so-called "assault rifle" genre.
my son wants a mini 14. I want a mini 30. basically the same gun different caliber. but I'm right there with you. nice rifle.
They are harder to attach a bunch of sights, lights and grips to. If that's not your thing they are a great rifle.
I've had one for 10 years and love it. It's like women everyone has their own tastes.
I really like the Mini 14. I used to own that exact same one until they got banned in my country along with all semi auto long arms.
Great video.
Cheers
That's shitty :( hopefully the tides will turn the other way

I think the price reflects the over-priced AR variants that have flooded the market. Guns are too expensive, even used ones.
What's your life worth when you need it to defend yourself?
It's a great weapon. Reinforce the bbl support on the pencil-barrel ones & it's easily battlefield accurate!
I love my old school 181 series wood stock mini 14.

Great video, learned a lot about this beauty... I'll be picking my mini 14 up in 1 week after the "cool down" waiting period here in Comifornia.
@Ilir Cami Big-5... $949 for the synthetic stock and stainless bolt/barrel.

That Winchester 94 was popular waaaay past the 50s my friend. Peaked out into the 80s and 90s, and still popular..
I have owned 2 mini14s over the years. Only issue I have with them is that the cost has gone up way too high. I don't think they are worth the 700 plus price on them now.
But the price only started to go up after Ruger Retooled the line/redesigned the barrels which were much needed changes.
Picked mine up used in early 2000's in nj, hardly used for 500 dollars. Best rifle I've owned so far.
Good video, my dude! Love shooting my Mini. Sure, I've more accurate long guns, but I love the sexy look of the Mini.
I love the Mini-14. It’s not a TactiTard rifle. It’s no frills getting shit done. 😁🙌🏻
I don't have hard numbers but chuck hawks got .77-1.5 MOA from a new model with just a trigger job.
www.chuckhawks.com/ruger_mini14_review.htm
You can also buy or build an accustrut to help with stringing on the old models.
I have quite a few aftermarket mags and most seem to run fine in my Mini. I just made a video of the AR/Mini combo mags I have. They ran fine in both guns.

If I wanted tack driving accuracy I wouldn't choose any semi-auto rifle.

Ruger Mini-14 is a awesome firearm if you only use Ruger magazines, cheap mags not so good
I paid $600 at Canadian Tire.
and I got both mags a rail and 2 sets of rings!
That's a steal.
Dropped a lot of coyotes and jack rabbits with it.

and then fine tune and dial it in to get the best

That is way better than open factory sights..

Once you got it set up be damn careful, and
