I have one. Never failed. The only thing that is odd is that for some reason Ruger's action are a bit brutal. My Mini14 just ejects the spent cartridge and sends it flying to the next county.
That’s because it’s based on the Garand/M14 Modified Garand action that was designed back in the day when basically long action cartridges (30-06 in this case) were the order of the day. Heavy cartridges/cases required a lot of gas to function properly.
Mine used to crush the brass as it fired it into the next county. An adjustable ga block is expensive. I changed to a smaller gas bushing. Huge improvement.
My suggestions as a Mini 14 owner. Replace your set screws to your rear sight. Get the next longest length. They have vibrated loose on mine, making me loose my sights windage. Do not bother to remove your bolt. It is a pain. Use a cleaning spray and just lube the pin and extractor. Lube up the tracks well and you will get the best performance. But do clean under your stock. The burned powder smell from your gas piston lingers. If your bolt hold back catches before the mag is empty, adust your left magazine tab down. Your left round in the mag can hit the tab to activate your bolt hold back Other then that. Enjoy your mini 14. I get very good shots at 100 yards without a scope.
If you remove your bolt lock cover plate, then removing and replacing your bolt is super easy. But on the other hand, it doesn’t get very dirty anyway. Most of the carbon buildup is at the gas block. It’s almost a self-cleaning rifle.
Several things I did to mine was first upgraded the rear iron sites. Added a harmonic stabilizer to the barrel and an extended mag release lever. Midway has many Mini 14 accessories.
Very very outstanding video. Great presentation. Clean language too. Thanks. Keep up the good work. Mini 14 is a civilian AR. No different than a ar. I have 5 ar. Two minis. I really personally like the mini better. Keep up the good work. Thanks a lot friend. SC Navy vet. 1965. 🇺🇸😊.
People base their opinions off the 70's 80's produced mini 14's. The new 581 and higher series of mini can shoot and be made to shoot better than you may think. However that takes a little more than bolting things on, but can be done resonable price wise. Take a look at accuracy systems for their mini products that encompass more than handguards and stocks. Mine shoots well with 55 gr bullets, stick with lighter bullets or venture into handloading. Replace the rear sight with tech sights.
Great video! Congrats on your purchase. You made a great choice. I'm a huge Mini 14 fan! I own 3 AR's, and without question prefer the Mini 14 for most everything over any of my AR's. A few things: Stick with only factory Ruger Mags, whatever the capacity. Aftermarket mags are hit or miss. Mostly miss. The Mini comes WAY! WAY! WAY! Over gassed! There is no need to launch your empty rounds into the next County! That effects your accuracy a FRIGGIN TON!!!!!!! Your action comes back very violently, and impacts the receiver, reducing accuracy BIG TIME! Fortunately for about $30, you can get a gas bushing kit from Accuracy Systems that will solve that issue. You will also need a torque wench to tighten down the screws down on the gas block after changing out the bushings. It takes a little experimenting, but once you have it dialed your empties will be ejected 8-10 ft from you instead of 35ft. Your gun will be way more controllable and a lot more accurate. I sent my trigger group off to get a trigger job done on it. Huge difference!!!! The stocks on Ruger Mini's suck! They don't fit the action as tight as they could. Choate makes a way better version for about $70 Much tighter fit. If your action has play in your stock accuracy suffers BIG TIME! Down the line, those peep sights aren't going to cut it anymore. Get yourself a forward rail like an Ultimak and mount a Circle/Dot reflex sight like a Holosun HS510C. Absolute 1000% GAME CHANGER! It is the way to go! Trust me! I have a couple of Marine Buddies who absolutely drool over my Mini 14. They probably don't want to admit it, but they also prefer it to their AR's. Just saying.
Changing the gas bushing to a smaller size improves the accuracy by reducing the violence of the action when it cycles. The piston slams into the receiver so hard each time it jars the gun. If you reduce this effect it helps with accuracy big time.
Great addition, now round out that Ruger rifle collection with a Mini-30. My Mini-14 in stainless has the Samson A-Team stock and Hannibal Rail(just awesome) and I kept my Mini-30 stainless with the stock black poly.
That safety is the same as the M-1 garand. It's puposely made that way for the ability to disengage ONLY when the finger is going for the trigger, as it should be.
Congratulations on getting a Mini14 platform . Just a few tips from my experience from running 2 of them for many years. Stick with factory Ruger mags or if you can find them the discontinued Tapco Gen 2 mags. I’ve tried MANY other mags 🙄 & unless you like practicing malfunction drills , stick with Ruger mags.. Use green or blue medium strength thread locker on the windage screws for the rear sight. Without it they’ll slowly back out after repeated firing no matter how snug you think they are . Specter gear mag pouch for the buttstock is a awesome addition for a grab & go rifle.
Thanks for the tips...so far I have only used my factory mags...I'll be willing to learn the hard way with a couple test mags, but I definitely need to learn what works. So far this rifle has been awesome...I just need to find cheaper ammo!!
Got mine in 2003 brand new. It's the 196 series with wood stock and blued finish. I got lucky cause the wood on mine has an exotic tiger-eye effect. I knew it was mine when I saw it. And this was purchased at WalMart in Simi Valley, CA. 🤣 But I have used the heck out of this thing over the past 21 years, from coyote and squirrel hunts, to exploding small watermelons, to shooting soda cans. It definitely shows a lot of use and still has not malfunction to this day! I have my primary AR, but that stays in the closet ready for an invasion. I use my Mini-14 several times a month. Accuracy I could care less about. It wont rabbit hole, but it hits what I aim at. Definitely a keeper!
The stainless Mini 14 in a wood stock is beautiful. The 5 round flush fit magazines are very handy for sighting the rifle in. One can also purchase larger magazines. I run 20 rounders in my Mini's and have a couple 10 rounders. I also did purchase several 5 rounders...one can never have too many.
The Mini-14 has a lot of character with an old school appeal that you don't get with an AR. It's a nice handling little rifle. It seems to escape most rifle bans as you allude to, which is interesting because the Min14 can do anything an AR15 can do. The Mini is more expensive and less flexible and less accurate than the AR but still worth owning and is a wonderful alternative in places where you can't own an AR. Garand rifle owners (like me) love the Garand style safety. :)
Yep. I'm a lifetime shotgun hunter and prefer 'old school' stocks without attached gadgets (OK I like red dots). Oh, I live in CA, so 5.56 capable with something looking like Grandpa's rifle has real advantages. Who knows if/when current platforms legal here, couldn't wait. Take care!
We're in the same boat! I have the same model of the Mini. Other than the brass being thrown across the range, I love it! Shoots nice and clean. Same caliber as an AR, but without the "Evil features" that are banned in my State.
My 1990s Mini-14 needed to have a modified sights. I fabricated a peep-sight with a sight hole raised 1/8". The gun was shooting ***way low*** (like in feet) from the factory. Since doing that it's been fine.
This is on my list since I live in an "AR15 is the devil city" I am also looking into the Fightlite SCR. Still researching the SCR. I already own 2 Ruger's and very happy with both, also like you said they are easy to work on and maintain.
Just get the AR and stop worrying about what people think... More after market parts and easier to work on... More versatility as well but I guess when you have a nagging wife......
Traded my Mini 14 for credit toward getting a new AUG. Dont regret getting the AUG which is a fantastic weapon but miss the Mini. Its so durable and love that most of the trigger mechanisms and internals are metal instead of plastic. So much plastic in most modern semi autos! Will probably pick one up again this year.
I got the 14 and the 30 they are the my two favorite rifles to shoot with. Good accuracy and reliability. I do not own an AR however I have many AKs and other sporting rifles ARs have just never appealed to me. Usually when i finally decide to buy one just so i can say i have one in my collection I go to the gun store and see something else that catches my eye and go with that. It doesn't help that the AR has been shoved down the throat of the American consumers for so many years now. I remember a time when imports were common and we had many options and opportunities to purchase all kinds of different things now most places ONLY seem to have ARs.
My Mini 14 is my first rifle and I'll never let it go. I installed an UltiMak rail, attached a cheap Bushnell AR Series red dot on absolute co-witness riser (for AR platform) so i can still use iron sights by peering under the red dot, got a Hogue stock and drilled holes in the stock and installed a Magpul AFG because that rail and barrel gets hot, and got some 10 rd magazines because they're easier to load and eject the magazine. My only gripe is that the screw on the rear sight gets loose.
I have heard that a couple times about the rear sight...I will have to keep an eye on mine. Good idea with the afg...i bet that makes a big difference. My gas block gets me every time as I have a long arm length.

Very nice set up...inwouldnt worry about it being the 18.5 version it's not a back pack gun really anyways...go with a folding PC for back packs....love the mini 14..great video..I liked and subscribed
i have the ranch model with the wood stock. i like traditional looking rifles. ars are cool and all but for what i'm doing, i don't need it. straight out of the box, mine was launching brass into the next county, and deforming the casing. i bought an adjustable gas block from accuracy systems, and it solved that, lickety split. it also cycles without slamming now, so that's also a big plus for wear and tear. i put a red dot on it. my eyesight isn't what it used to be, the optic fixes that for me.
I have a C39 7.62 x 39 sporter Ak from century arms, and I want a Mini 14 to get into the 5.56 cartridge. Being from Commiefornia, the mini 14-30 with the Cogburn arsenal stripper clip adapter allows you to feed the magazine like a sks with stripper clips! I can carry a good 60-80 rounds in each mag pouch in my CR7 Condor chest rig. I’m currently rocking 4 magazines for my C39 Ak with 3 stripper clips and a single mag atop of them. It has velcro and a clip to keep them shut and preventing anything falling out. It’s a fast way to reload magazines and allows you to carry more rounds than having 4 10 round magazines per pouch (again I’m in Commiefornia). So my approach would be the same for the mini 14. Keep 2-4 magazines from Ruger and then keep 6-8 stripper clips per pouch once I get a mini 14. A-TM Folding stock and Hannibal rail+venom red dot 😊
The mini 14 and mini 30 are the best choice in the bad situation of being in a ban state like california or new york. I have shown my antigun niece she said my wood stocked mini 14 was a regular rifle and the ar was an assault rifle.
I bought one..... stainless.... Never put 1 round down the barrel. Had it replaced with a Schilling Target Match Bull Barrel. I like the charging handle better....it shoots cleaner....and I can drop hogs and coyotes in a run at 250 yards easily. Drop em like swatting flies 😂😂 Love this thing..!!!❤ Had a Bushmaster .223 Bull Barrel Flat Top Shorty......liked it alot......but I'm keepin the Ruger 😊😊😊
Nice rifle. I evaluated the possibility of purchasing something like 10 different rifles. The Mini-14 came out on top. You’re absolutely right about the PC aspect of the rifle. You have to imagine a prosecutor waving it around in a courtroom for the jury to behold if you ever need to use it for self-defense. You could be totally justified in using it, but at the end of the day, if the jury thinks your rifle looks too scary for anyone but a blood thirsty individual to own, that trial probably won’t end well.
You can take the 5 round mag apart and trim the piece above the plate that slides out. Just take some cutting pliers and trim a bit off for one more round in there. So at least it will hold 6 +1 👍🏻
Bought me a 584 model that dented all empty cases as they ejected 30 ft away, sent it back to Ruger who replaced it with a 585 model that did exactly what previous model did ; dented all empty cases . I’m so disappointed and frustrated as i wanted to re load empty cases which because of the dents are rendered useless
I'm in a similar situation. I grew up shooting ar's a little, my friend had one but I had an AK( back in 2002 when you could get them for $350). In the military we had M16s and I am comfortable with the platform. But 1) I find them boring and 2) My wife isn't from the U.S. and in her country only the criminals in the Favelas have M16s, combined with the constant bombardment of news attacks on the platform, it was the one hardline she put down around what firearms are in our house. BUT, a carbine in an intermediate cartridge is pretty handy, so I have been looking at alternatives like the mini.
Some of the guys responding in the comments clearly don't understand the healthy relationship side of this... Life can be difficult enough... Maintaining respect in my relationship is critical and ultimately the safety and security I need in my life... Doesn't require an AR to get me where I need. You clearly understand that dynamic...and through time, experience, and training, the relationship will continue to grow and mature and the opportunities that come from that respect. Thanks for your comment!
Cool progression! Once you get the mini dialed in as you like it, your next stop should be the mini 14's bug brother, the m14 or m1a. Though, that will have you leaving Ruger.
My brother bought one back in the late 80's. It is the Rancher model. It's stainless steel with a folding stock. If you've ever seen the A-Team show from the 80's, its the same one that they used in the show all the time. If you buy an AR, just don't tell anybody but your wife and buddies. Personally, I like AK's better than AR's. I never had an AK jam.
Love my Mini-14. Great gun and I like the familiarity with the surplus M1's I grew up with. But, I can't imagine my wife telling me I couldn't have an AR.
To this day I still haven't gotten around to buy one. I got AKs and all kinds of stuff just never got one. Everytime I think I'm going to I end up seeing something else I like. I think there's just so many of them it's almost like the industry has been shoving them down peoples throats for so many years it's made me not want one.
Hate to trend on you buy… that’s a lame @ss assumption on your behalf that every American should have or own an AR, it clear to me that you know nothing about firearms accept ARs.
@@TRu44-560 you are wrong my guy. I dont know anything about ARs except for the fact its the most available, modular, affordable, common, reliable, and easiest to use platform. Other than that i don know shit about them. Way more ARs in America than AKs therefore parts will be easier to get in times of need, I think.
Own a SS 5.56 584 series mini 14 with a Vortex 1-8x scope on a synth stock. Works well. I’m a below average shooter but can make 2 MOA @ 50y every time.
Welcome to a tight, select club. When everyone looks the same at the range, there is always a quite Mini-14 at the end of the range tables having fun, no jams, and poking holes in the same place. Yeah, you can modify the visual, but all the changes will not change how the rifle shoots. Put a scope on it and you'll enjoy it even more! I do have the stainless-steel version for the same reason that you wanted one
You’re just getting into the mini now? I can’t say you’re late to the party, becasue the party ended in the early 2000’s for the re-tweeked Mini-14. I’ve got three. One very old, one newer stainless one and one super new stainless one. Both of the last two shoot exactly the same…. Minute of beer can out to 100 yds with ghost ring sights. With a low power scope, I can take down deer sized game or a adult zombie at 150-200yds. The Mini’s just work! I love them and wouldn’t trade them for anything. I love my AR’s to, but the Mini-14 just holds more nostalgia for me from the 80’s with my pops out in the deserts.
The mini 14 and mini 30 come in all stainless and synthetic stock. More so than almost any ar 15 the 18.5 inch barrel gives a perceptable degree of less muzzle flah than a 16.1 inch barrel.
All due respect, aint no way my wife (who I love and respect dearly) gonna ever tell me what gun I can and can’t own, or any property for that matter lol
I have a mini thirty in 7.62x39. I chose it over the mini 14 because the bigger 30 caliber bullet is better for deer hunting. But I still want a mini 14! Thanks for the video. PS: I’m in same boat as you with the wife. She would kill me if I brought home an AR but to her my mini thirty is just another hunting rifle, as long as it has a 5 round magazine in it and not a 20 rounder. But we know the truth…
For me it's the balance in the freedoms I am given and the respect she's asking for in return. With time and education she'll learn the idea that platform is irrelevant... it's like anything in life... a little education and patience can go a long way
My first wife never knew when I bought a new gun. When I would go out and shoot I would take 2or3 of my guns with me. Then leave one out in the truck out of sight. And bring in my new one with the other. She never had a clue. Untill we divorced!
Good video with honest context regarding your choice. I love my Mini 14! I can tell you an advantage to low capacity magazines is for shooting from a table or prone. The typical 30 round mag can get in the way. Otherwise, for home defense I would use standard capacity (30 rounds in most of the USA) mags where legal or 10 rounds in California. Enjoy!
OK, The 223 is the/or most popular cartridge in the US. Several generations grew up on a AR platform and it's the most popular. Older Myself, prefer a more classical firtearm look. M14, M1 carabine looks appeal to me. BUT I would get the 7.62x39. Mini 30. Old like bigger bores. For Hunting about the same ballitics as the 30-30 Win
Interesting comment about the 5 round flush mount magazine. If you ever hunt/carry your rifle, the five round mag is a great feature. I doubt very few people can get off five shots at any coyote or fox. I’d much rather carry two five round mags than one 10 round. I also own a Ruger American Ranch Rifle that utilizes the AR style magazines. The typical 5 round AR mag is to long because it has to clear the mag well of an AR. I think there is an opportunity for Ruger to offer a low profile 5 round mag for their Ruger American. I wonder how much they would need to modify their tooling for the Mini 14 five round mags.
You got a slightly longer sight radius AND the bullets leave the barrel a little faster. Other than the gun bag, you got a better deal. Keep the metal parts oiled.👍👍👍👍
I’ll always rock an AR-15, that said I also have a Ruger Mini 14 and like it too. I do highly suggest getting an Ultimak Rail for it for optics mounting and I feel it does help with accuracy. I also would suggest spray painting it. It’ll help protect it some but also get it won’t stand out as much being all black. Hope you have fun with your mini
Thanks a bunch...I have been eyeballing the Rail for this. There are a couple styles that caught my attention. I have a vinyl wrap kit I will be installing very soon. It's a detailed job, but they come out pretty sweet if you take your time and pay attention. Thanks for watching!
@@OuterLimitless2 out of all the rails I think the Ultimak forward rail is the best for a mini 14. I just go with it and a small red dot for a scout style and then I can co witness my irons if need be.
I have a MINI 14 584 series with an Hogue over molded stock fitted with a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6 illuminated. At 50 yards shoots very close to the accuracy of an AR15. I like it but it’s on the heavy side. Some new owners are surprised at how the rifle deforms the casing’s throat on ejection.
I had the option for the over molded stock...I almost got that with the 16" barrel. But I had mine in my hands and decided to buy it on the spot instead of waiting. I'll likely buy alternate stocks at some point. Thanks for watching!
@@oldmangreywolf6892 that doesn't make it an SBR. 16.2 is the factory length of the tactical Mini-14 barrel. cutting it shorter than that would make it a SBR, unless you permanently attach a muzzle device, that makes it 16+ inches again.
@@dwayneelizondomountaindewh6073 Muzzle devices do not officially add to barrel lengths. They are not permanent features. So they would still consider anything under 16 inches a SBR.
@@oldmangreywolf6892 wrong, if you pin or weld it in place it is considered a permanent feature and dose count for the overall length of the firearm. that's why you can buy 14 inch barreled "m4" style ar-15's because the make them with pinned in place muzzle devices.
@@dwayneelizondomountaindewh6073 By which state law does that apply? That is not a nation wide issue. Many states do not consider a muzzle part of the barrel. Pinned or welded. I live in Massachusetts. The factory barrel is the barrel. Cutting the original barrel under 16 is making it a SBR in gun restricted states. Unless you are mentioning states that allowing that, you are giving false impressions that it can be done nation wide. Hence you can be getting people in trouble.
The rolling bolt action is super dependable, the Mini 30 is better in my opinion, the tactical version wirh the 16 inch, threaded barrel, scope rings and 2 round clips is a bargain.
I love how it's "politically correct" because wifey doesn't realize that that particular design hasn't been considered to be a proper battle rifle since the Korean war. It's basically a modernized take on the M1 Garand with a detachable magazine design.
Honestly, I would of asked her: “if there’s an intruder am I going to be doing the fighting or are you? Because if it’s going to be me I get to decide how I’m going to fight and what I’m going to use, not you. - That usually solves that issue.
@@fox1actual You're not married I take it? And I have plenty of "if I'm gonna fight" options...I don't need to go all the way to a gun fight...if that happens there are bigger issues than being forced to use my Mini 14...just sayin...
Take off the cheap rear site and get a Tech Site 200 you can thank me later , ha! Nice rifle ! I have the same one 52 series with a ultimac a a tech site 200 on it. Tuned the trigger with an over travel screw. Shortened the stock 1 inch to get the perfect fit. Like it 10 times better than my colt m4a1. ENJOY IT you made a good choice. Grads,!
I am surprised to hear that that rifle fits you since you are 6'1". That model has a shorter length of pull than the wood stock (13" vs 13.5"). You might want to relook that.I'll bet you would find it more comfortable with 1/2" or more spacer. Just saying.
@@OuterLimitless2 Sight radius between a 18" over a 16" barrel is a slight improvement. Not a factor at all if you use an optic. Regarding velocity, the difference in velocity is in the 25-50fps per inch range. That 50-100fps makes a difference in trajectory and kinetic energy at longer distances.
@@timmooney7528 I gotcha... So wouldn't barrel length affect accuracy, especially at distance, as the projectile would travel flatter further at a higher velocity? Or be less impacted by wind at higher velocity?
@@OuterLimitless2 Trajectory would be flatter, however that would not affect accuracy. The change in velocity will not loosen or tighten a group size. The consistency of group size is not a factor of velocity.
Stainless is nice and honestly stainless barrels tend to be more at accurate..... during their life span but they usually don't last as long before they start wearing out and when they do wear out they open up fast meaning your groups go to shit. Normal steal barrels will last longer and when they do start to open up they will take longer to open up completely. The Mini-14 isn't as easy to swap barrels out as an ARbso you're better off this way for now.
The mini 14 is based off of the M 14 which was based off of the M1 Garand and the bolt and charging handle is reminiscent of the m1 carbine as well. The safety is the same as the m14 and Garand. They field strip almost identical to Garand and m 14. There is quite a bit of aftermarket support for the mini 14. If you really want that rifle to fit into that specific pack, why not get and adjustable stock or folding stock. I understand about the looks it does or doesn't get because it doesn't look like a scary black rifle. Remember the average idiot is just that...an idiot. It's your rifle , do as you want and have fun and be safe with it. Rugers are definitely cool and great customer service if needed.
I have some preban twenty round factory mini 14 magazines I will sell you. They are literally marked law enforcement use only and they are like new condition. I have had them for a long time. They are from quarterback before the ban when Ruger would only sell 20 round mags to law enforcement.
The Mini-14 is a great rifle if you upgrade it. Me personally? I would rather have the carbon steel model somewhere as this because if you do use a stainless Mini-14 in cold climates, stainless steel can actually crack if not heat treated correctly. Carbon steel will also give you a longer barrel life. Me personally? I would upgrade the Mini-14. It's what I did with mine.
The safety on a mini 14 is the same safety as on the almost 6 million m1s the 6.5 million m1 sarbines the 1.4 million m14s. Then there are over 1.3 million m1as 1.4 million mini 14s and mini 30s plus you get the point.
A too small bag just gives you an appropriate excuse to get another firearm. Keep learning, growing and ignore haters. The firearms world is big enough for everyone and people that act as gatekeepers arent the heart and soul of the community.
I took mine in 300 BlackOut and found a Ruger Mini wood stock and converted it over and added a suppressor. Awesome gun. As for the AR the goverment wants all semi-autos taken away from the people. Enjoy your new firearm and join GOA.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with the mini. I have had two over the years and they both worked fine. I should have kept the last one i had but like a dumby I traded it for another ar.
The AR platform is the best. Seriously need to rethink your reasoning. I get it though, my wife thought the same as your wife but after long talks and common sense she changed her mind. I simply told her to reason it out and tell me why an AR os honestly not better and she couldn't. Love the content brother
I'll get there with her but it's respect for her and the patience will come with her understanding and reasoning. I don't need to rethink my reasoning ... I only need to respect my family boundaries and teach, train, and lead through example and over time things will sort out and become clear. If I force, push, and defy then no one gains anything and it's not an enjoyable journey... You did ok. But next time do your research , on what you really want because that has happened to me in the past but like you I’m OK with what I purchased but I do have that particular mini 14 in the 16 inch heavy barrel is the one I wanted….👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
But I did do my research on what I really wanted... Didn't I say that? And maybe what I wanted wasn't available at the time I was at the shop and I decided to buy what was there anyway? That's not a research thing... That's a decision thing.

I have one. Never failed. The only thing that is odd is that for some reason Ruger's action are a bit brutal. My Mini14 just ejects the spent cartridge and sends it flying to the next county.
An adjustable gas block from accuracy systems will fix that, you can adjust it down to bolt action if you want
😂👍
That’s because it’s based on the Garand/M14 Modified Garand action that was designed back in the day when basically long action cartridges (30-06 in this case) were the order of the day. Heavy cartridges/cases required a lot of gas to function properly.
@adrien; Yea same here and thats cool 😎
Mine used to crush the brass as it fired it into the next county. An adjustable ga block is expensive. I changed to a smaller gas bushing. Huge improvement.
I have never bought a gun before. This mini 14 looks awesome. I really want something lightweight, but powerful.
I've had mine on layaway for the past three months, three more months and $450 left, I can't wait
I hope you like it! So far so good on my end... We'll see how it goes!
You won't regret geting one👍
My suggestions as a Mini 14 owner.
Replace your set screws to your rear sight. Get the next longest length. They have vibrated loose on mine, making me loose my sights windage.
Do not bother to remove your bolt.
It is a pain. Use a cleaning spray and just lube the pin and extractor.
Lube up the tracks well and you will get the best performance.
But do clean under your stock.
The burned powder smell from your gas piston lingers.
If your bolt hold back catches before the mag is empty, adust your left magazine tab down.
Your left round in the mag can hit the tab to activate your bolt hold back
Other then that. Enjoy your mini 14.
I get very good shots at 100 yards without a scope.
Get the Tech Sights rear sight.

YOU spend the money and get them.
I am happy with the factory rear sight.
If you remove your bolt lock cover plate, then removing and replacing your bolt is super easy. But on the other hand, it doesn’t get very dirty anyway. Most of the carbon buildup is at the gas block. It’s almost a self-cleaning rifle.
And I get lousy groups at any distance.😂 I am willing to accept that it's me not the mini!😢❤still love the rifle...
Several things I did to mine was first upgraded the rear iron sites. Added a harmonic stabilizer to the barrel and an extended mag release lever. Midway has many Mini 14 accessories.
I got a great bag for my mini at Midway...good to know there are some options...
It was my first rifle and I still use it 20 years later.
But the AR is the civilian AR...
A few things:
Stick with only factory Ruger Mags, whatever the capacity.
Aftermarket mags are hit or miss. Mostly miss.
The Mini comes WAY! WAY! WAY! Over gassed!
There is no need to launch your empty rounds into the next County!
That effects your accuracy a FRIGGIN TON!!!!!!!
Your action comes back very violently, and impacts the receiver,
reducing accuracy BIG TIME!
Fortunately for about $30, you can get a gas bushing kit from Accuracy Systems
that will solve that issue. You will also need a torque wench to tighten down the
screws down on the gas block after changing out the bushings.
It takes a little experimenting, but once you have it dialed your
empties will be ejected 8-10 ft from you instead of 35ft.
Your gun will be way more controllable and a lot more accurate.
I sent my trigger group off to get a trigger job done on it. Huge difference!!!!
The stocks on Ruger Mini's suck! They don't fit the action as tight as they could.
Choate makes a way better version for about $70
Much tighter fit. If your action has play in your stock accuracy suffers BIG TIME!
Down the line, those peep sights aren't going to cut it anymore.
Get yourself a forward rail like an Ultimak and mount a Circle/Dot reflex sight like a Holosun
HS510C. Absolute 1000% GAME CHANGER! It is the way to go! Trust me!
I have a couple of Marine Buddies who absolutely drool over my Mini 14.
They probably don't want to admit it, but they also prefer it to their AR's. Just saying.
I owned a mini 14, Ranch, that said, I could never get the close range I got with the AR or the Marlin, just saying.
You mentioned a gas bushing kit that was available for the Mini. Other than mild ejection, what does it do to the overall performance of the gun?
Changing the gas bushing to a smaller size improves the accuracy by reducing the violence of the action when it cycles.
The piston slams into the receiver so hard each time it jars the gun. If you reduce this effect it helps with accuracy big time.
@@romeoalphafoxtrot9517 if I knew that at the time, I would have done it. I like the break down of a Mini 14 over and AR any day.
@@romeoalphafoxtrot9517What kind of accuracy are we talking about? Are there any downsides to that bushing?
I've had excellent results with promags.
Thanks for the tips...so far I have only used my factory mags...I'll be willing to learn the hard way with a couple test mags, but I definitely need to learn what works. So far this rifle has been awesome...I just need to find cheaper ammo!!
@@OuterLimitless2 As far as ammunition goes.
I shoot cheap steel cased Tula & Wolf most of the time & both of my Minis love it.
Get yourself the Tech Sights rear sight. Set it and forget it
Got mine in 2003 brand new.
What’s up neighbor lol.
Congratulations on your new Mini 14! Great rifle, enjoy it and thanks for sharing this great video!
Thank you! Thanks for watching... I appreciate your support!
Does blue lol-tight work?
There are plenty of aftermarket products; stocks, sights, magazines, etc. It's a fine, discreet rifle. Enjoy in good health. ✌🏾
I have 3 AR's. One chambered in 7.62x39. My Mini gets more range time than all the AR's combined. It's just more fun to shoot for me.

i have the ranch model with the wood stock. i like traditional looking rifles. ars are cool and all but for what i'm doing, i don't need it. straight out of the box, mine was launching brass into the next county, and deforming the casing. i bought an adjustable gas block from accuracy systems, and it solved that, lickety split. it also cycles without slamming now, so that's also a big plus for wear and tear. i put a red dot on it. my eyesight isn't what it used to be, the optic fixes that for me.
I need to look closer at the casings... I think mine are somewhat crushed too... But I forget. I kept some from my first session to analyze.
I am 5 ft 9 and the mini fits me fine. My 12 year old grandson is 5 ft and it fits him useably.
A-TM Folding stock and Hannibal rail+venom red dot 😊
there has been studies showing that your likely to get a shorter sentence if you kill some one with a mini 14 and a wood stock
The mini 14 and mini 30 are the best choice in the bad situation of being in a ban state like california or new york. I have shown my antigun niece she said my wood stocked mini 14 was a regular rifle and the ar was an assault rifle.
Because it's an ultra-reliable reliable platform that gets the job done.
So far very good!!
I have a stainless tactical that winked at me from the shelf at my lgs 😅
I bought one..... stainless....
Never put 1 round down the barrel. Had it replaced with a Schilling Target Match Bull Barrel. I like the charging handle better....it shoots cleaner....and I can drop hogs and coyotes in a run at 250 yards easily. Drop em like swatting flies 😂😂
Love this thing..!!!❤
Had a Bushmaster .223 Bull Barrel Flat Top Shorty......liked it alot......but I'm keepin the Ruger 😊😊😊
Good 4u dude as long as you get that woman of yours shooting. Everything changes when she develops comfort with firearms.
Thanks for the comments...and YES, precisely. That's why I am taking the patient route. It will all work out in the end. Appreciate the support!
You can take the 5 round mag apart and trim the piece above the plate that slides out. Just take some cutting pliers and trim a bit off for one more round in there. So at least it will hold 6 +1 👍🏻
Hmm... Interesting idea... Maybe I'll experiment!

@@OuterLimitless2 the only thing I'd recommend caution: be gentle with the trigger guard when you open your trigger assembly.

I’m so disappointed and frustrated as i wanted to re load empty cases which because of the dents are rendered useless
M-Carbo makes a nice trigger spring kit that works great and is cheap. Polish up the sears and it’ll feel really good 👍🏻
I'm in a similar situation.
Truth there
Mini 14/30. Amazing rifles. Both stainless barrels.
trim the magazine follower in the 5 round mag and you can get a couple more rounds in it -- I put an accustrut on my 180 series and its very accurate
I have three Ruger rifles. Mini-14, AR 556, and 77 in .357 Magnum.
I believe every American should on an AR but any firearm is better than none
To this day I still haven't gotten around to buy one. I got AKs and all kinds of stuff just never got one. Everytime I think I'm going to I end up seeing something else I like. I think there's just so many of them it's almost like the industry has been shoving them down peoples throats for so many years it's made me not want one.
The Mini is the AR alternative that is as close to the AR as you can get
I think its the best for ban states as alternate
Hate to trend on you buy… that’s a lame @ss assumption on your behalf that every American should have or own an AR, it clear to me that you know nothing about firearms accept ARs.
@@TRu44-560 you are wrong my guy. I dont know anything about ARs except for the fact its the most available, modular, affordable, common, reliable, and easiest to use platform. Own a SS 5.56 584 series mini 14 with a Vortex 1-8x scope on a synth stock. Works well. I’m a below average shooter but can make 2 MOA @ 50y every time.
The lips of the factory magazines are thin and might bend if dropped on the floor. A pair of pliers can fix it if necessary.

Don’t feel bad, you can’t get the 16” tactical in CA because it ships with a flash hider
I'd much rather have a mini 14, easier to clean and maintain for me. Lower profile great shtf gun.
I find Ruger rifles are very easy to work on... Not terribly complicated. That's a big bonus! Thanks for watching!
Politics and the opinions of women aside. The AR platform is superior for its modularity and availability of parts and magazines.
I've only been into firearms for less than 2 years... So I guess what do you want me to say?
Enjoy!
Tapco USA makes perfectly functioning mags for this gun synthetic I believe
Look into the fightlite scr lower that turns your ARs into innocuous looking ranch rifles.
YES...I've seen that...very nice....have my eye on them. Thanks for reaching out!
Can it handle any type of red dot sights?
But being able to swap out for Glock mags is a + for sure
I've come to love this as it is...
I love the rifle , can't wait to get one . If the price ever comes down . 👍😎😇
I went with the Samson rail for my mini-30. Holding off on the 14 rail for a while until I test out a red dot with Ruger's included rail.
Thanks for watching!
i solved that problem with an adjustable gas block from accuracy systems.

You can take it to a gunsmith, and they can cut the barrel down two inches and replace the sight.
That would put it into the SBR class and if he already has AR restrictions, his state will definitely have SBR restrictions.
@@oldmangreywolf6892 that doesn't make it an SBR. 16.2 is the factory length of the tactical Mini-14 barrel. cutting it shorter than that would make it a SBR, unless you permanently attach a muzzle device, that makes it 16+ inches again.
@@dwayneelizondomountaindewh6073
Muzzle devices do not officially add to barrel lengths.
@@dwayneelizondomountaindewh6073
By which state law does that apply?

Welcome to the modern era of politics and polarizing opinions about what's acceptable. It all comes down to patience and education.

I would have bought one of these years ago but I have two AR-15s and they don’t take the same magazine.
I am surprised to hear that that rifle fits you since you are 6'1". That model has a shorter length of pull than the wood stock (13" vs 13.5"). You might want to relook that.I'll bet you would find it more comfortable with 1/2" or more spacer. Just saying.
Barrel length affects velocity, not accuracy. It has to do with powder burn time in the barrel.
The front to rear sight are a longer sight radius on a longer barrel which can increase accuracy... It's less about the powder burn time.
It is noticeably easier to insert a 10 round than a 5 round mag.
I have some preban twenty round factory mini 14 magazines I will sell you. They are literally marked law enforcement use only and they are like new condition. I have had them for a long time. They are from quarterback before the ban when Ruger would only sell 20 round mags to law enforcement.
Please reach out to me at outerlimitless@gmail.com if you're interested. I would definitely like to work out a deal if possible
The Ruger is less likely to jam or explode on you compared to much of the AR's these days.
How about Henry AR7?
The safety on a mini 14 is the same safety as on the almost 6 million m1s the 6.5 million m1 sarbines the 1.4 million m14s. Then there are over 1.3 million m1as 1.4 million mini 14s and mini 30s plus you get the point.
A too small bag just gives you an appropriate excuse to get another firearm. Keep learning, growing and ignore haters. The firearms world is big enough for everyone and people that act as gatekeepers arent the heart and soul of the community.
Put some white grease on the bolt rail.
Aftermarket mags are readily available.
I took mine in 300 BlackOut and found a Ruger Mini wood stock and converted it over and added a suppressor. Awesome gun. As for the AR the goverment wants all
semi-autos taken away from the people.
It's actually not a journey at all and instead of her having interest in what I do and respect for my hobby it will become friction. I can pretty much get what I want...I can pretty much do what I want. My wife honors and respects me. I honor and respect her. Just because I post one video do you think this is the end of the journey or just the beginning? I think I have sound and solid reasoning.

@@OuterLimitless2 you guys who let your wife tell you what to do baffle me.
@@cheezyridr she doesn't tell me what to do. She tells me her concerns and I listen and I make my own decisions. I have a fantastic life... It is built on a level of respect across all aspects. Work, family, play... Balance. I'm here for the long run so I'll take a short term mis-understanding on her part and convert that into a lesson and teaching and training on both of our parts and we'll then grow and advanced. Do you think this is the end of the story or just the beginning? There's a way to conduct business in all cases... Especially at home. So no... I'm not being told what to do.
Thank you...
You can get 20&30 round mags
Bought mine at Walmart in Maryland in 2013 for $ 679.00 👍
If they would upgrade the model Edit AR15 magazines and improvements for mounting optics They probably couldn't keep up with production
What you are trying to impart is that the gun comes into your shoulder like a shotgun. which is exactly what you want from a CQB rifle.
