These are the stories that aren't told enough..... Similarly, ~20 years ago, I had the opportunity to "invest" $10k to help a friend of friend start a business. I happened to have ~roughly double that (for basically firat time in life = work bonus) I was just married and my in-laws were suggesting I put $10k down to secure a large plot of land near them. i considered both options, but I concluded the "real estate" option was much less risky... and knew I'd be working a long time to come.... it felt "safe" and $10k seemed like an enormous amount of money. Fast forward 5 years after and I was happy to "recover" $4500 from the failed land scheme - meanwhile, despite many pitfalls along the way, the business was doing well and was easily the "correct" choice... Today, that $10k would have been ~20% of a local conglomerate company (w subsidiaries, buildings, land, etc...) worth an estimated $5X,XXX,XXX.00... nowhere near the mistake of passing on Led Zeppelin AND Deep Purple, but I think we all have life opportunities we fail to assess correctly.... life twists and turns... You just keep going forward - cant dwell on the past. I thought being risk averse when young waa being, "smart" - turns out it wasn't
It's a good thing Terry couldn't accept Jimmy's invitation and nominated Plant... because Plant took Bonham with him, and so Jimmy formed the perfect band!
Funny how those things work. Page found an almost unimagineable group of players. Probably the greatest rhythm Section and hellacious singer that ever was.
After the passing of Bon Scott, Malc and Angus Young tried to get Reid to join AC/DC. Terry begged off and recommended a smooth, crooning cat named Brian Johnson.

Terry Reid is _amazing._ Look him up. His songs have been recorded by The Hollies, Crosby Still Nash,CheapTrick, Marianne Faithful,Chris Cornell, Etc. Played with everyone. This man, this _Artist,_ missed out on absolutely nothing! He IS one of the greats. What a life. Rock & Roll, Terry! 🤘
John Paul Jones was always locked in...him & Page knew each other from session work & there was no other 2nd choice for bass... They were only looking for a singer & a drummer. As for Page/Jones/Moon/& Daltrey...that idea (due to rumors of The Who possibly breaking up) was actually pitched...&...coincidentally... Is how they got their name...when Moon's response to that lineup suggestion was: "That will go over like a Lead Zeppelin".
I just went to listen to some of his songs. He was a damn good singer. Led Zeppelin, no doubt, would have been different, because it would be missing the contributions of Plant (and Bonham). But I would have been great.
It was Page's decision not Terry's. Reid had already signed a contract to open for the Stones and Page refused to wait. Reid was the one who recommended Plant.

Be careful about making snap judgments without knowing all the facts. This short doesn’t tell the whole story. Terry Reid had other obligations at the time and Page didn’t want to wait. I’m not sure what the issue was with Deep Purple. Anyway, it’s not like Terry Reid hasn’t been successful.
if you haven’t heard Terry Reid, you’re missing out on something great. His voice, his guitar playing, and his songwriting are amazing. Robert Plant may have had the looks, but I think Terry‘s voice was way better. I often wonder what would’ve happened if he joined Led Zeppelin.

Anyone with rock n roll knowledge knows who Terry Reid is, so don't brag about not knowing him. Professionals don't back out of prior commitments for new opportunities, so it wasn't a mistake. End of lesson, you're welcome.
Unfortunately Reid never found anything better and his solo career never really blew up. He was moderately successful in the UK in the late 60s and through the 70s. I was a solid fan of his music back then and still am. I'm a guitarist and I learned a lot listening to his tunes in the way he voiced chords and improvised guitar solos. He had a killer groove. He's a much better improvisational singer than Plant and was very charismatic live. Looked great too, when he was younger. I can't help but wonder whether he regrets not taking Page's offer. If he ever did I'm sure that by now he's come to terms with it. He's still out there doing the occasional pub gig. I don't know this for a fact, but I got the feeling drugs and alcohol got the best of him for a while. In the end I don't think Terry was terribly ambitious either. I don't think he ever wanted to be a superstar or get rich. His albums sold OK but never charted as far as I know. I still enjoy listening to Seeds of Memory on occasion. Younger friends of mine almost always ask about him if they happen to hear me playing his music.
Terry Reid turned Jimmy Page down to start a band because he was touring with the Rolling Stones at that time. Led Zeppelin wasn't even named yet. Jimmy Page wanted to start a band that eventually turned out to be Led Zeppelin.

Actually the truth is Page went to Steve Marriott first but Steve was still with the Small Faces doing what came to be their Most famous album. It was was Steve who recommended his friend Terry to Jimmy because their voices were very similar. Plant was a huge fan of Steve Marriott as well and ( if you don’t already know) the vocal on Whole Lotta Love was clearly inspired by Marriotts vocals on ‘you need loving’ which was a Small Faces blue cover of the Muddy Waters song

@@danielevans9379 Yes he loved Winwoods vocal range and power but Marriott also had the incomparable stage presence ( despite his tiny stature) that really drew a crowd, I can’t think of anyone in Rock & Roll back then except maybe Tina Turner or Jackie Wilson ( both primary considered R&B artists in those days) that had that combination of electrifying stage presence and vocal power. As bad as Keith wanted him , it was the fear of being upstaged by Steve was the reason Mick wouldn’t allow Steve in The Rolling Stones.

When Terry got the call from Jimmy, he was in the US on tour supporting The Stones. At the time Robert was crashing on Terry’s mums sofa and Terry told Page to call him as he thought he’d be good for his new band and that he ‘also knew a drummer’. So in that one phone call Jimmy Page got Robert Plant & John Bonham. The rest is rock history. For those critical of, or mocking, Terry for not joining Led Zeppelin, the band Page was putting together was going to be called the New Yardbirds and Terry was only 18 & was seen as an up and coming superstar. He had the most incredible voice but, in the end, Terry never really had the songs to stand against the big artists of the day.
According to Terry Reid, he wanted to do it. Terry was being managed by Micky Most and Peter Grant. Grant managed the Yardbirds. Reid had committed to a Rolling Stones tour in the U.S. but Page needed to get together a band to fulfill Scandanavian dates that the Yardbirds were supposed to do so he needed a band immediately. Page was supposed to write a letter to Keith Richards to get Terry Reid out of the tour commiitment and either did not or Keith said no. Terry did a gig in Bolton just before the Rolling Stones tour and Hobstweedle with Plant opened. Plant's P.A. crapped out and Terry let him use his and told Page after the gig to come see Plant.
Terry Reid was already heavily involved with two bands and had no time. When asked for a reference he did indeed suggest a kid he was aware of, Robert Plant.
And thanks to a singer that is basically unknown today Led Zeppelin was forned. He was also offered a singing gig with the Who and recommended his friend Roger Daughtrey cuz him & Pete didn't get along & then, nevermind I could go on for hours!!!😊😊😊 But think about it. If he had taken the gig. It WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN LED ZEPPELIN! CUZ Plants voice & Bonhams drums were as big a part of Led Zeppelin as Pagey's guitar & JPJonsey's bass & keyboards!! Definitely the second best band to ever play. And my #1 is Grateful Dead. The huge amount of improvisation that the Grateful Dead played during their concerts were phenomenal! I fell in love with the way Jerry played guitar in concert. It was NEVER boring cuz Jerry rarely ever played songs the same way twice. And the rest of the band had a way of NOT playing a song the same way twice. And although they'd be playing a song you knew well it was still almost always different. And their concerts, they had so many songs in their repertoire that they could play 4 or 5 concerts in a row without repeating a song. Although "Me & My Uncle" & "Sugar Magnolia" was played a lot.
Don't forget Steve Marriott. He was on Jimmy Page's shortlist. And there is a very good version of him singing a blues standard with lyrics like, "You need lovin'"
Terry Reid was SIGNED already, so he couldn't join Page if he wanted to. Ried was under Micky Most and released an album in 68. Never really turned down Jimmy.
When Iron Maiden vocalist paul di’anno left the band, they tried to get terry reid to join the band. Instead, reid had referred them to Ex-Samson singer Bruce Dickinson
He didn’t reject Led Zeppelin. He was already in a band and they were opening for The Rolling Stones, I believe, and he was getting to go on tour with the Stones in the United States. Jimmy Page said they were getting ready to record and they couldn’t wait for him to get back so that’s when Terry Reid suggested Robert Plant and the rest is history.
When Tim Staffell left Smile (later to be known as Queen) Brian May asked Reid to fill in. Reid instead recommended Freddie Mercury as he was busy at the time.
His 1969 album and his 1975(?) album seed of memory are both absolutely wonderful. The 69 album very much has a vocal sound in the same realm of early Zeppelin so you can see that page had his vocalist archatyoe kind of decided by that point but the 75 album seed of memory is a much more mellow acoustic album with bits of a kind of country twang thrown in at points thats absolutely a wonderful listen. If you actually look into his career in the late 60s in the UK he was literally compared with the Beatles and the stones but due to some label issues his music got delayed as well as tours and so it didn't end up taking off and so while an absolutely wonderful artist in his own right he kind of ended up as the Pete Best of Zeppelin.
Just to clarify: Page wasn’t “coming off of” the Yardbirds; the record company had wanted him to put together a New Yardbirds-since all of the other members had left-and that was initially the band he was forming.
Terry Reid then went on to turn down lead acting gigs in Kubrick's 2001, Chinatown, the Deer Hunter, Animal House, the Godfather, and Star Wars, the lead centerfold photographer for Playboy, and 50 percent ownership of Atlantic Records.
To be successful ask Terry Reid to join your band.

if you haven’t heard Terry Reid, you’re missing out on something great. His voice, his guitar playing, and his songwriting are amazing. Robert Plant may have had the looks, but I think Terry‘s voice was way better. I often wonder what would’ve happened if he joined Led Zeppelin.
Never heard of the guy. He made a huge mistake not taking the Zeppelin not Deep Purple gigs.

Yes. He's one of the rare people who knew what he wanted and what he didn't.
Unfortunately Reid never found anything better and his solo career never really blew up. He was moderately successful in the UK in the late 60s and through the 70s. I was a solid fan of his music back then and still am. I'm a guitarist and I learned a lot listening to his tunes in the way he voiced chords and improvised guitar solos. He had a killer groove. He's a much better improvisational singer than Plant and was very charismatic live. Looked great too, when he was younger. I can't help but wonder whether he regrets not taking Page's offer. If he ever did I'm sure that by now he's come to terms with it. He's still out there doing the occasional pub gig. I don't know this for a fact, but I got the feeling drugs and alcohol got the best of him for a while. In the end I don't think Terry was terribly ambitious either. I don't think he ever wanted to be a superstar or get rich. His albums sold OK but never charted as far as I know. I still enjoy listening to Seeds of Memory on occasion. Younger friends of mine almost always ask about him if they happen to hear me playing his music.

Terry Reid turned Jimmy Page down to start a band because he was touring with the Rolling Stones at that time. Led Zeppelin wasn't even named yet. Jimmy Page wanted to start a band that eventually turned out to be Led Zeppelin.
Let me see. Zep sold about 500 million and Purple sold about 100 million. Terry went on to sell 20,000. Ego is not a good thing.

Actually the truth is Page went to Steve Marriott first but Steve was still with the Small Faces doing what came to be their Most famous album.
It was was Steve who recommended his friend Terry to Jimmy because their voices were very similar.
Plant was a huge fan of Steve Marriott as well and ( if you don’t already know) the vocal on Whole Lotta Love was clearly inspired by Marriotts vocals on ‘you need loving’ which was a Small Faces blue cover of the Muddy Waters song

The Small Faces did a cover very respectful of the Muddy Waters version, but LedZeps Whole Lotta Love actually copies Marriott’s improvised phrasing and interpretation that aren’t in muddy’s version, so it’s undeniable that Plant was channeling Steve, at least more so than Muddy.
Back to Terry Reid, I think his version of ‘Stay with me baby’ is one of the best vocals ever

Yes he loved Winwoods vocal range and power but Marriott also had the incomparable stage presence ( despite his tiny stature) that really drew a crowd, I can’t think of anyone in Rock & Roll back then except maybe Tina Turner or Jackie Wilson ( both primary considered R&B artists in those days) that had that combination of electrifying stage presence and vocal power. As bad as Keith wanted him , it was the fear of being upstaged by Steve was the reason Mick wouldn’t allow Steve in The Rolling Stones.

Urge those of you unfamiliar with Terry to listen to his two tracks from 1973's Old Grey Whistle Test (on You Tube) - songs: Live Life and Without Expression - just superb. Moreover, his Vietnam war anthem, SEED of MEMORY, is also mind blowing and hauntingly beautiful. Suffice to say, God bless the greatTerry Reid!!!😊
Terry Reid is actually really good. Shame he isn't more well known. Saw him play in Cardiff about 15 years ago and he was fantastic.

When Terry got the call from Jimmy, he was in the US on tour supporting The Stones. At the time Robert was crashing on Terry’s mums sofa and Terry told Page to call him as he thought he’d be good for his new band and that he ‘also knew a drummer’. So in that one phone call Jimmy Page got Robert Plant & John Bonham. The rest is rock history.
For those critical of, or mocking, Terry for not joining Led Zeppelin, the band Page was putting together was going to be called the New Yardbirds and Terry was only 18 & was seen as an up and coming superstar. He had the most incredible voice but, in the end, Terry never really had the songs to stand against the big artists of the day.
Faith gave us Led Zeppelin. Thanks, Terry.
According to Terry Reid, he wanted to do it. Terry was being managed by Micky Most and Peter Grant. Grant managed the Yardbirds. Reid had committed to a Rolling Stones tour in the U.S. but Page needed to get together a band to fulfill Scandanavian dates that the Yardbirds were supposed to do so he needed a band immediately. Page was supposed to write a letter to Keith Richards to get Terry Reid out of the tour commiitment and either did not or Keith said no. Terry did a gig in Bolton just before the Rolling Stones tour and Hobstweedle with Plant opened. Plant's P.A. crapped out and Terry let him use his and told Page after the gig to come see Plant.
Terry Reid was already heavily involved with two bands and had no time. When asked for a reference he did indeed suggest a kid he was aware of, Robert Plant.
If he joined deep purple he would have more money in his checking account very quickly

And thanks to a singer that is basically unknown today Led Zeppelin was forned. If he had taken the gig. It WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN LED ZEPPELIN! CUZ Plants voice & Bonhams drums were as big a part of Led Zeppelin as Pagey's guitar & JPJonsey's bass & keyboards!!
Definitely the second best band to ever play. And my #1 is Grateful Dead. The huge amount of improvisation that the Grateful Dead played during their concerts were phenomenal! I fell in love with the way Jerry played guitar in concert. It was NEVER boring cuz Jerry rarely ever played songs the same way twice. And the rest of the band had a way of NOT playing a song the same way twice. And although they'd be playing a song you knew well it was still almost always different. And their concerts, they had so many songs in their repertoire that they could play 4 or 5 concerts in a row without repeating a song. Although "Me & My Uncle" & "Sugar Magnolia" was played a lot.

Don't forget Steve Marriott. He was on Jimmy Page's shortlist. And there is a very good version of him singing a blues standard with lyrics like, "You need lovin'"
Terry Reid was SIGNED already, so he couldn't join Page if he wanted to. Ried was under Micky Most and released an album in 68. Never really turned down Jimmy.

Terry Reid also turned down a copy of the Sports Almanac from 1945-2000 in 1975.
He didn’t reject Led Zeppelin. He was already in a band and they were opening for The Rolling Stones, I believe, and he was getting to go on tour with the Stones in the United States. Jimmy Page said they were getting ready to record and they couldn’t wait for him to get back so that’s when Terry Reid suggested Robert Plant and the rest is history.
This Terry Reid guy, who I’ve never heard of before now, is right up there with Decca records turning down the Beatles.

Zeppelin is still the mightiest band to date.
When Tim Staffell left Smile (later to be known as Queen) Brian May asked Reid to fill in. Reid instead recommended Freddie Mercury as he was busy at the time.
A turn of events leads to big things.
His 1969 album and his 1975(?) album seed of memory are both absolutely wonderful. The 69 album very much has a vocal sound in the same realm of early Zeppelin so you can see that page had his vocalist archatyoe kind of decided by that point but the 75 album seed of memory is a much more mellow acoustic album with bits of a kind of country twang thrown in at points thats absolutely a wonderful listen.
If you actually look into his career in the late 60s in the UK he was literally compared with the Beatles and the stones but due to some label issues his music got delayed as well as tours and so it didn't end up taking off and so while an absolutely wonderful artist in his own right he kind of ended up as the Pete Best of Zeppelin.
Just to clarify: Page wasn’t “coming off of” the Yardbirds; the record company had wanted him to put together a New Yardbirds-since all of the other members had left-and that was initially the band he was forming.
