- In this video, Shane and I were sent to recover a rolloff that had gotten stuck in someones front yard. We were told we didn't have a lot of room to work. We responded with our 1985 Freightliner with a Holmes 750 bed on it. AKA(The Gopher) We used the split boom to stabilize the drivers side, while we winched off the passenger side. Hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching, don’t forget to LIKE, COMMENT, SUBSCRIBE, and SHARE this video!

Splitting and swinging booms...so old but in a way still ahead of a time. What a great design. No wonder you like it so much.
Mr Aljosa Yes sir the rotator in its day. Thanks for watching and stay safe
Your newer trucks are going to be jealous of how many views the old Holmes is getting.
Mr John that is true. Thanks for watching and stay safe
Nothing like the power of a fully mechanical system. They talk to you and if you understand what it’s telling you you’re a great operator.
Mr James Thanks and we appreciate you watching our videos. Stay safe
We still have an old 74 White cabover with an old Holmes split boom not sure what model but we use it on a regular basis to pull stuck farm tractors and equipment everyone around us run those huge tri axle rotator trucks and many of them won't touch stuck farm tractors and equipment because the are usually no place near a road or hard surface and they are afraid to go out in fields with their trucks. We take our old White out where others won't go, we also have and old 5 ton military tank recovery unit for when we get the old White stuck.
Mr Brown they are tough wreckers for sure. Thanks for watching and stay safe
I love the fact when you ask your helper for a shovel for yourself that he brought one for himself as well without telling him to help you! that's a good man!
Mr John We appreciate that. Thanks for watching and stay safe
Never had my boss "ask" me do you mind doing this or that. He usually said go do this or go do that... From what I have seen from your videos you are the kind of boss I always wanted to have but didn't. You show respect no matter what the situation is or who you are dealing with be it either employee or customer. Yessir you are the boss I never had...
Mr Johnny I appreciate that. Thanks for watching our channel and stay safe
Or haven’t
Mr Tom thanks for watching and stay safe
I agree 100% Johnny. You never see a boss this involved in his own company anymore. From what I have seen he is the nicest man you could meet. This man deserved my subscription.
Only one thing better than a Holmes 750.....that's two Holmes 750s...did a lot of work with an old 750 on the back of a 1976 KW back in the day!
Now every job is a ROTATOR JOB!!
Mr Paul That was the truck in the day. Thanks for watching our channel and stay safe
Jamie Davies would love that old tow truck. It was worth its weight in gold on that job.
Mr Ty yes sir it was. Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay safe
The Holmes 750 was the Boss of heavy duties back in the day.
Mr Ed thanks for watching and stay safe
Im so glad you posted this video. I have been trying to find one of a 750 in action. I have a 1982 on a Ford L9000. We are cleaning it up and getting it ready for the road. I am originally from Atlanta and Spider Wrecker had a fleet of 750s. My dad always said they were the best. In about 1980, we bought 2 from the Navy in CA, they were on junk International chassis. We drove my 1979 GMC Astro out to get them, it was summer and there was no working AC. We never re-chassised them and I guess he sold them to an operator somewhere. fast forward 10 years and we bought one from the bankruptcy of Eastern Airlines, we re-chassied that one to a GMC Brigadier and ran it all over the southeast. Fast forward to today, at 60 I am on my third career in Aberdeen WA, putting together a heavy truck towing operation with an old 750. the adventure continues. Maybe I should post videos too.
Mr Timothy I love watching the old wreckers work. Thanks for watching and stay safe
there is something majestic about twin boom wreckers. thx for showing the Holmes tree and landing mat techniques.
Mr Rob thanks for watching our channel and stay safe
Ain't nothing like an old chain drive!
Mr David that's correct. Thanks for watching and stay safe
It's nice seeing old rigs still putting in work this is the truck you should take JC Smith out in
Mr Michael he would probably love it. Thanks for watching and stay safe
@@SumterWrecker I know he would
Hard work and common sense are the best teachers I can relate to that.Great video great content and great people.
Mr Russell thank you sir. Thanks for watching and stay safe
ONE OF THE BEST WORKING BEDS IN HEAVY WRECKER
Mr David They are strong and tuff, Thanks for watching and stay safe
I love those old trucks. My first truck was a Chevy 3500 with a homes 480 on the back, my second truck was a international with a home 750 just like that one. They don't break down like the new trucks all the computers and such. You can pull until something snaps lol.
Mr Jacob you are right they pull until something gives. The casualty or something on the wrecker. Thanks for watching and stay safe
Great video, I run my whole business with 22 plus year old equipment. So nice to see the older equipment still in use. I think the truck was older than Shane.
Mr Ssnyder yes sir I is older than him. Thanks for watching and stay safe
This is the first time I've ever seen a 750 Holmes in action Great vido
Mr Russ thanks and thanks for watching our channel. Stay safe
Brought back memories, I used to operate a Holmes 750 on a 1975 GMC 6500 (I think) single axle. That was back in the early 80's.
Mr Rayar54 thanks for watching and stay safe
the old Holmes tree !
Mr bozo. Yes sir . Thanks for watching and stay safe
Great job. Brought back lot of memories working for my Dad while in High School and college. Thanks for sharing.
Mr Joe thank you for viewing and stay safe
Great job winching it out. Also nice to hear you talking about your dad and how you have remembered what he said and taught you about hard work.
Mr Riley I really appreciate what he taught. Thanks for watching our channel and stay safe
Thanks for the video second time I watched it that home 750 was a work of the art back in the day enjoying seeing it in action again thanks
Mr Les Yes sir that was the rotator in its day. Thanks for watching and stay safe
Didn’t even make that Ole 750 grunt. All these folks wanting these flashy new rotators and that Holmes split boom started it all. Worked many Holmes units plus worked a military wrecker. These new operators have no idea about a 4x4 wood timber and good ole 440 Holmes.
Radio one receive yes sir Holned was the wrecker in the day. Thanks for watching and stay safe
It's great to see a old school wrecker still in use would love to see it fully restored

She's a little beat up, but still gets the job done. Thanks for the video. I'm too young to have ever seen one of these still in service.

Roll off driver here. Here's a good trick to keep in the back of your mind when dealing with a stuck roll off. When the bed is raised, the end of the rails and the tail roller will hit the ground and lift the back of the truck. If you can find something to put on the ground as a base, you can jack up the back of the truck by raising the bed. You can change drive tires without a jack, or in this case, lift the drives out of the hole. When I get stuck I usually do that, and fill the hole in with lumber scraps or masonry scrap. As often as not, I just drive out.
Mr Jeff thanks for the tip. I have used that trick in a rollback but didn't think about it with a roll off. Thanks for watching and stay safe
I love the heck outta that ol truck..
Reminds me of my upbringing. Neva had a new piece of equipment on the farm. It was always new to me and we made it get the job done
Mr Tony Thanks I know that feeling very well. Thanks for watching and stay safe
*Damn big tow trucks have come a long way since the Holmes 750 came out. This was the super heavy rotator of it's day.*

Awesome video....wish there were more of these beasts in action 👍👍
Mr Chris thanks and stay safe
Great job guys! Doing it old school!!!
Glocksforme we appreciate that. Thanks for viewing and stay safe
Mr Hal this one reason why I like your channel so much better. The other wrecker channels all have painted chains that look like they’ve never been used, brand new straps and 3/4 million dollar rotators they are scared to get dirty...meanwhile your snatching them out with an old rusty Freightshaker and a piece of rusty floor grate and talking about the old days.
If it keeps on raining down here y’all are gonna be mighty busy the next few weeks. Be safe and make that money!
Mr Nick thanks for that. We use what we have. Thanks for watching and stay safe
Fantastic, common sense, and hard graft. And let's not forget, DAD.
Mr Keith Yes sir. Thanks for watching our older videos and commenting. Stay safe
Mr Hal. I really liked that old truck. Glad to hear y'all are going to keep it around. Hopefully we'll see it in another video again. Take care and stay safe out there! (Jason in Sumter)

Mr William Yes sir. I couldn't find a working video of one on RUclips. Thanks for watching and stay safe
Never had seen a rig like this nor those crates used. One of the few that's not afraid to use a shovel to make the pull easier. I'm impressed with your skills.

Thanks for the video of the split boom in action! Lots of work , but definitely gets the job done! Take care and Stay Safe !
Mr Brad Yes sir, she is old but still a work horse. Every time I used this truck it makes me appreciate the older tow generation that much more. Thanks for watching our videos and stay safe.
Taking it easy in retirement after 37 years as a over the road driver! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Nice work utilizing the Holmes 750 bed as it was built to do and that's a great idea with the " landing mat " !
Sure made a big difference after you fellers got the wheels cleaned out and ramp shoveled out .
Keep up the great work !

Excellent video and great old iron!! Back in the days there were many wrecker manufacturers and Holmes was ' The Cat's Meow ' . You're a very respectful young man!!!

That was nice sometimes old school works best it keeps you humble hopefully one day you'll be able to restore yours like Jammie Davis is doing. Thanks for the share and hard work never hurt anyone I was turning wrenches with my dad around the age of 7 that knowledge has served me well over the past 46 yrs since I started helping him in the garage
Mr bigdawg You are right about work. Thanks for watching and stay safe
Great recovery 👍, nice old rig. Be safe out there.

Wow! What an old Dinosaur! You don't see them anymore!. NOT the Truck, The 'Family Video' store you passed in the beginning! You just don't see them anymore!....LOL Love the wrecker!

Now thats a great old tow truck! Hope to see more videos of it in use
Mr Tim Yes sir. It makes me appreciate how much older wrecker drivers had to know to recover trucks. Thanks for watching and stay safe.
Watching this one really brought back some old memories of my first split boom experience it was a Holmes 600 on a single axle White road tractor we lengthen to fit the wrecker body. I split the booms and picked a full-size car out of a stone wall drain ditch it had flown into. I picked the car up on one side and the front of our small wrecker counter balancing the other side and drove away from the ditch without even a scratch. I really enjoy watching you and your crew you guys are the best and really down to earth crew I’ve found, God Bless you all and stay safe
Mr John. We appreciate that. Thanks for watching our channel and stay safe

Mr Tony I appreciate that. Thanks for watching our channel and stay safe
At first I thought it was going to be a dead pull. Turned out very good with the stuck truck with the power assist. Nice recovery. Always nice to have someone to help drive the stuck vehicle out that cooperates and doesn’t work against you
Mr Dan thanks for watching our channel and stay safe
Loved seeing old technology working. Definitely deserves a refurb and see it again. Loved the hi-tec brake lock just needs a hole drilled in the brake pad.
Mr Phillip that's a good idea. Thanks for watching and stay safe
Another great job with the original rotarer. There were several in my part of the country in the 70s and 80s. Had a propane has truck sink in a gravel road 1 hook on the truck and other swung around tied 2 a tree wrecker was completely off the ground swinging like a hamick walked me right out. Loved the comments about your dad.Mine got a heck of a education some were when I was between 14 and 22 at that time I didn't think he knowed anything.
Mr Larry thanks for commenting and watching. Stay safe
My dad had a couple of those 750s back in the 80s. Loved when we had a call to take it out. Those trucks will make you a man or make you go home.
K cook they are tuff wreckers. Thanks for watching our channel and stay safe
Love watching an old rig still in use. That old 750 is stronger than some of the trucks today if you know how to rig them. My great grandfather had a dump truck from the 1800s. It had solid steel wheels with paddles, no tires. To dump the bed you had a handle crank. Two giant gears between the bed and the cab. You had to crank the handle to raise and lower the bed.
Mr Brad that sounds like an awesome old truck. Thanks for watching our channel and stay safe
Still to modern day old school can still be the best way.
Mr Scott thanks for watching and stay safe
used to ride on a rotation wrecker when I was 16 a chevrolet with holmes 500 split boom.. loved how fast you could put it back together and get gone. cut my teeth on recovery then, and in the Army...
Mr Waltjam thanks for watching and stay safe
Slick recovery with the old school 👌🏼
I don’t know about everyone else but I would love to see all the mechanical aspects of that old iron’s workings. When time is permitted of course.
Mr Art When I do the truck video I will. Thanks for watching and stay safe

Yall should do more videos with the 750.I passed one of yalls trucks near bishopville today in my rollback. Good recovery

now thats a real heavy duty old time wrecker have not seen one in Rhode Island in about 15yrs the last time i seen a old holmes was mounted on a mac body cab and chassey pulling out a 18 wheeler out of a snow bank on interstate I-95 during a nasty snow storm thank you for the great video looking forward to the next one as always keep safe and god bless

When I started out towing the Holmes split boom was and still is the recovery king. We did a lot of recoveries with our Holmes This brings back a lot of memories
Them yunguns don’t know what they’re missing out on

That old Holmes was similar to one we had on an 8 legger (8x4 AEC) in the UK in the late 60's.. I've just woken up from a nightmare!!!
Mr Max. Thanks for watching our channel and stay safe
It probably was and I can almost bet Max that it was bought from Bill Jackson of Internal Wrecker Sales.
cool old truck. looks like just the right tool for the job. i remember running a old mechanical oilfield winch truck that had mechanical winch on it. you had to be careful with it because it wouldn't stall out like a hydraulic winch it would just keep pulling until something broke.
Ezrider359 very very true. If you are ever slow and need a project let me know. Lol. Thanks for watching and stay safe
Yeah that’s amazing work

This old school is that a 30 ton or 40 ton unit. Seen the one Jamie Davis has and refurbished it working in very coldweath er .
Holmes 750 is a rated as a 25 ton. However it is extremly under rated.

That old truck would look awesome with a little TLC I hope it happens someday. Good recovery there.
Mr Tom It will. Thanks for watching and stay safe
Mr. Hal I'm glad you videoed this recovery so people can see the equipment that was the main front line wreckers of the old day's. Several company's still use the 750, 800 and the 1801 as their front line equipment. I still say the 750 was extremly under rated at only 25 Ton. People don't realize having a 750 is just money in the bank. Nice recovery guy's, be safe and always remember your safety is the most important factor on any tow or recovery.
Mr Dan thank you sir. We really appreciate you watching and commenting. Stay safe
