I think the poles sticking out of the water were prob a sort of defence for the foreshore at wiggs from erosion..prob to protect the war munitions factories that were down there.
Fascinating film that's for letting us all see it...I have been very interested in the upper Mersey for years now...just wish I had been old enough to see commercial shipping using West Bank dock when it was operational...I have a very good book about the dock with some very nice pictures, Ray Worthngton mentions the coasters that where scrapped on the river bank near old quay bridge....I do remember seeing one when I was a lad of about 18....I wonder if Ray has a photos of these ships being scrapped..love to see some....and also would love to know the history of the remains of a coaster after being cut up thats in the mud just outside west bank dock to this day...near the Granox...I wonder if Don wheedon has any, Anybody that may have any picture they would like to share can email me direct at... nickjaxe@ntlworld.com Used to launch my boat at the slip in Widnes by the Snig pub and run upto Warrington in it...very interesting...also used to canoe down from Warrington to Widnes.
This is prior to the construction of the new bridge. Also, is the Whigg Island still there? I've been Whigg Island many times before but I've never seen it?
Big tony is a legend! He was my tutor in college! Nice to see the big man doing well!

If they keep building wearhouses and house on green belt there will be nothing left

Yeah it's still there.
You go right under the approach to the bridge halfway up the island, and it's gigantic.
Now the industry's mostly gone the rivers recovered the people haven't - never a truer saying were there's muck there's brass.........
