Stephen , out of all the videos you've made i have to say that this one was the best. Stripped back to bare bones , knocking balls in , just like you were in the club.....i felt like i was there with you! Brilliant.
You’re an absolute British sporting legend and was the very best for many years. Now you’re the best pundit / commentator in the game. You still have plenty to offer the sport. I also think you’d make a damn fine coach. You’re a credit to the game Stephen.
I’ve had to edit this because there seems to be loads of Ronnie fangirls in here arguing about who the goat is. My comment wasn’t intended to incite war. I simply said that Hendry is a snooker legend and still has loads to offer snooker. I love Ronnie and without question he’s the greatest ever and his records will never be bettered. He’s my favorite player and watching him play the game is like witnessing an artist paint a masterpiece. Even Stephen acknowledges that Ronnie is the goat. But I was commenting on Stephen’s video so I spoke about him and him only. Hendry is still a sporting legend whether you agree or not.

@@johnmartin650 Because a lot of folk, especially with the British mentality, tend to get bored of predictable winners and naturally start wanting the underdog to win as it would be more exciting to see. Always a problem being a regular winner, people start to hate you purely because they want to see something more exciting (ie, unpredictable and different). There is also just that element of the basic fact that in order to really dominate so consistently all the time for so long, you have to be very cold and more robotic. Entertaining personalities may be super talented and win quite a bit, but they can't ever be so consistent about it all the time by the very nature of their minds and attitudes.

Remember O' Sullivan knocking Mark Williams out of the WC in 2008, it knocked Mark out of the top 32, i think it was to number 48. Even then Stephen was still getting to the Crucible Semi-Finals. Yet Mark knuckled down and fought and put the hours in. Now he's still top 8. Stephen Hendry should still be top 3 in the world but everyone's motivations are different. He achieved everything and I don't blame him for not being up for a mad long fight. Our brains are different. williams, higgins and o'sullivan love competing. Hendry loved winning. Great channel! Hendry was an absolute weapon. He used to just mow players down and annihilate them before they got to the table. He was no frills and didnt carry on like a goose. The lack of tournaments in his day and yet still has 36 Ranking Titles to his name speaks volumes to his dominance. He was in my mind the beginning of the new era of players who attack and dont hold back, definitely inspired me as a young man to pick up a cue. Thanks Stephen.

I discovered snooker at 19 when Stephen was 19. I wasn’t latched on to Davis or White so I loved watching Stephen dominate as the “next big thing”. Great times.

people say poncey Hendry declined from the early 2000s, but I think that is false.
It's just that at the beginning of the 2000s, a new generation of extremely talented players emerged, not to mention the fact that Ronnie continued to progress enormously from the years 2002-2003 and after.
It wasn't Hendry who declined, it was just the adversity that was too much for him.
And let's face it, in the years of Hendry's reign, there was no great adversity facing him. If there were today's players back in Hendry's heyday, he would have won far fewer titles.

I've been watching snooker for as long as I can remember and I was always a fan of Ronnie's. Sadly I've never witness the greatness of Hendry live because I'm too young, but channel made a true fan and an admirer of Stephen Hendry
He was a machine. Never knew he was such a natural talent either. Makes his achievements even more remarkable.
Everyone in Scotland loved it when Stephen was winning everything. Before Hendry, Scotland had been absolutely shit at snooker so to then utterly dominate the sport was amazing. The fact that his constant winning meant some folks (especially outside Scotland) didn't like him made the winning all the sweeter. Absolute legend.
There is a portrait of you with the 87 Grand Prix trophy on the wall beside the table I play on in my local club (Pyramid Club in Kilmarnock) Every Friday night when I play with my 85 year old Dad (who’s claim to fame is beating John Pullman in a best of 5 exhibition back in 74) I always give it a wee glance of admiration.
My old man aside, you were the biggest inspiration for me playing snooker & absolutely my GOAT. A fantastic ambassador of the game & genuinely think if you qualified for the Crucible again it would be possibly your greatest achievement.

Your will and desire to win were supreme and as much as I loved Jimmy I was a fan of yours too as the years went by. I hope you do get back to the Crucible for one last time as a player. I also want to thank you for meeting with me after your comms at the UK Championship last year (Zhang vs Vafaei. You even agreed to a photograph which was something I was very grateful for. May Day holiday in the 90s was always the same. "Hendry wins again"... Loved it.
Yeah, my childhood memories of May Bank Holiday weekend are my parents putting together something from IKEA while I watched Hendry vs White on the TV :D
Stephen and I are almost exactly the same age. I was a huge fan of the man the world knew as The Nugget, and remember my teenage depression following his defeats to Taylor and Johnson. Then three years of joy, then along came this young whipersnapper called Hendry who started winning everything. I couldn't dislike him because you'd have to be a fool not to recognise his enormous talent, but Davis was my hero and I didn't like seeing him getting beat. In the coming years I warmed to Hendry and regarded him as the best player ever to hold a cue. And it is fantastic to see what an engaging chap he is now that he can relax more and just enjoy being a legend of the game.

Ruthless at his best. Took break-building to the next level. The most dominant player there has ever been. Unfortunately his attacking play when combined with a slight loss in consistency that comes with ageing, his disregard for safety, the general standard improving and the dreaded “yips” meant he didn’t have the longevity of others. But at his best, what a player!

Stephen i couldnt agree with u more, my mother was barmaid in local snooker club when i was age 6-16 ish , it became my home and i loved growing up there, once i got fairly good and in my teens and playing snooker and pool all the time, just having the local members watching me play while they were on the fruit machine like i did them as a kid, made me focus and practise on my own so much more seriously, a table at home wouldnt have been the same club atmosphere or effort/concentration from myself

There is something really satisfying about watching those balls go in one after another, the sounds, the feeling. The awe of the skill maybe.
That can't get a win on the tour apparently but. I'd still love to see him get back out there competing seriously. Hendry is also that interesting story of the fine line that it is at the top. People talk about Tyson still being terrfying etc but remember when he lost his edge he was getting floored by absolute nobodies. He was still an animal but all of those guys are. It's more a testament to how great you have to be to dominate like that. People treat the also rans like jokes but they are streets ahead of the average person. Even to get a sniff of professional play you have to be a bit special. It isn't all good necessarily and the closer to the top the better/worse it gets. In the words of the Red Mamba, consider a universal jokes by casual idiots on their couch, 'I'm closer to Lebron than you are to me'.
Anyway. I'm fascinated by the whole story. What makes peolpe great, why peole fail, why great people fail etc. To be able to listen to someone like Hendry like this talk, unhindered by some idiot Corporate Media agena is great (obviously there's a bit of production going on here at like our mate Joe Rogan he has had a lot time in the regular media before doing this). Like you are in the room with him as he practices just talking about his life. Then you get Ronnie, Robertson or some other sports legend who just loves snooker in there having a game a chat and a game and you get to sit in like one of their mates while it happens.
Love it. Give me more... Harder, faster. No. I think we're at a stage where we can be a little more intimate.. romantic. Just keep it up. I'm open to Hendry on the Golf Course with Golf Pros also... could be a thing. It's still a cue tip all these things crossover and into life too which is perhaps the most important
I recently spoke with a 85 yr old retired Major League Baseball Pitcher (I live in USA) and he said the key to becoming the best at anything comes down to one word...Obsession. From your story, it sounds like it was the same for you. Once the obsession faded, so did your game. Your career is something to be very proud of and thanks so much for sharing the sport on this channel!

I remember I used to love watching snooker as a kid in the '90s, and my mum had a crush on Jimmy White, and so I heard a lot of rather harsh words against Hendry as a child in those finals, LOL.
Ronnie may get an 8th, but Hendry had absolute domination. Win after win, record after record, 147's, centuries, youngest worlds, consecutive dominance throughout basically near an entire decade.
Ronnie is great but his has been sudden spikes over 30 years now. Of course he has more centuries etc, he's played for longer.
Never got to watch you play, so hearing you walk through your career made for a great listen.
Remember watching you on Scotsport one Sunday afternoon. Prob about 16 you were. Followed you ever since. You owned the Crucible in the 90's. Amazing to watch your career!

The day you stopped dominating the circuit your true personality emerged. It’s horrible to say but the yipps gave the snooker loving public a legend of the sport with an honest and straightforward opinion plus the true Stephen’s like ability came to the fore. Ok, so this isn't necessarily about Snooker.... I host a regular Pub Quiz and Stephen has attended twice with friends etc... what's marvellous is that not only did everyone else whom was in attendance, about 50 people, just accept that the 7 Times World Champion was there, no-one bothered him... selfies etc... he's was the perfect gentleman and brought me a drink afterwards... I'll not disclose said public house...obviously, but he was great company and very down to earth...

Stephen Hendry dominating run is something that no other player will ever achieved.The level of perfection and aggressivity on every shot is what snooker should be all about.I have seen it and this was the highest level ever played and the reason why i will always name Stephen Hendry as the best player ever for that period of time he was untouchable.And to those claiming his competition was weaker just shows they dont understand what it takes to be on top for a whole decade just like Tiger Woods did or Wayne Gretzky.

Standard is too high to dominate now and too man tournaments, Ronnie has won a ton of tournaments in the last 10 years, Judd as well.

I remember getting up early in the morning to watch "the king" play that my grandmother had recorded, before going work on my YTS course i was on as a trainee bricklayer.
Inspired me to practice at Willie thornes in Leicester and just thinking about it now, i can still smell the steaks cooking and the hops from the beer they served there.

Did not butcher everybody. Get your facts right before you comment! Marcus whitewashed Hendry 9-0 and has a winning record over him. Many others owns Hendry head to head and in finals! Leave for another day in case i upset you...

@@irmasil3 people say Hendry declined from the early 2000s, but I think that is false.
It's just that at the beginning of the 2000s, a new generation of extremely talented players emerged, not to mention the fact that Ronnie continued to progress enormously from the years 2002-2003 and after.
It wasn't Hendry who declined, it was just the adversity that was too much for him.
And let's face it, in the years of Hendry's reign, there was no great adversity facing him. If there were today's players back in Hendry's heyday, he would have won far fewer titles.
Hendry is no Ronnie a far better player than Hendry.and Hendry will be the first to say it

No one will achieve what you where able too in such a short time, pure dominance and pure style in every sense of the word. What us snooker fans would do to see you practice for the worlds again. Speaking as a young player its the older guys that are more exiting watch bar a couple exemptions.

My whole family would stay up late watching the snooker champions at the Crucible in the 80's My mum didn't know who was winning and losing and would ask ever few minutes who winning! The atmosphere, the commentary, the ghost like smear of the balls running across a cathode ray tube TV screen was mesmerising. The tension between the players made it so special, watching them on VHS now is like being transported back in time.
