A couple of observations. You should be using a loupe to look at t-206's when in doubt. Smell isn't a 100% tell all on card age. Vintage cards in the east/south smell different than West Coast because of the humidity. There are 1000's of vintage cards that were in ice bricks including the SGC 9.5 1952 Mantle that grade fine. Lastly, the paper stock on 68 Topps is different than the 78 topps. Best way is to get digital calipers. Without seeing the rest of the cards, offer looks super low ball, but $3500 no way. I'd make profit on $1500 all day.
I don’t think they had doubt though. A lot of those looked off just on the video when he started pointing them out. He put his hands on them and knew the card stock was wrong
@@zachpierce641 100% fake. For those new to the hobby the best method to view is a 10X jewelers loop or your magnifying glass on your iPhone. Surprised there wasn't an Eddie Plank, Joy Doyle, or Sherry Magie error in the lot.
@@billcinnamond1391 Yeah they’re fake? He knew that . If the card stock is wrong you don’t need a loop
Ok
I’m learning so much from you guys! Anything prior to the 80’s. So many good tips! Please do more
Really appreciate that! Thanks for tuning in for the ride!
A lot of current collectors don't know this, but the binder sleeves they sold us back in the late 70's/early 80's left a sheen on the cards if they were in the plastic sleeves too long. When I pulled my cards from that era out of storage around 2003 or so, several cards looked like they were shining, including a 1969 Mantle.
Years later, I bought a T206 McGraw Portrait from the binder of an older dealer at the Philly show in 2020, and subbed it to SGC. SGC didn't say it was fake, but they also wouldn't grade it and refunded me the grading fee. This year, 3 years free from the sheen of the binder sleeve, the card no longer had that shine and was subbed to CSG and graded this time.
I think maybe those T206 cards should have received a second look from an experienced expert. There are issues like the brownish color of the name and team, and the dots in the printing that were not discussed on this episode that would have provided a more complete analysis of the authenticity of those cards.
Yup
Also, I think those T206 are real lol.
Change that to I am 100% certain the Joss and the few still shots of the other t206 shown were real.
I do wish they would've shown the gloss on the cards up close - would've been nice to see it. I have a bit over 200 t206s myself and I couldn't tell they were fakes either, they do look legit.
@@NBAforlife8, yeah, I have around 1,000 T206 in my collection, have handled many more than that.
From the video, especially the closeups, I did not see any indication that the tea staining method was used like Mike said, as the crackling was not there and the color was 100% correct on the fronts as well as the brownish nameplate color.
They were real.
Buy them
@@GFTCNJ , thanks, but I’ve already got a complete T206 520 card set.
Always looking for tough back combos tho, do you have any FS? Broad Leaf, Drum, etc.
I was helping a friend sort his cards to grade and he had several in the screw downs. You are correct that PSA rejected them as altered, however, SGC is much more forgiving and I think they graded almost all of them.
Good to know.
I think if you take them out and put them in a cigar box/humidor for a while it helps “restore it” without messing with it at all.
Another great episode. Lmao watching Mike sniff the cards made my memorial weekend.
Thanks for watching!
“Click the light button three times if you don't,” that has to be an instant classic!!!!!!!!
Ha
Cal Ripken prices are dirt cheap. No respect for iron man !!! That 83 in the screw down is like $20. Should be $200
It isn’t the player, it’s the number of cards produced. Chipper rookies cost a buck, because they printed millions of them.
Thanks for watching!
Great episode guys! Love the HR Derby cards!
Yeah so cool!
The irony here is that he said, "I am not a big fan of the card grading racket" as they were informing him he had fake cards. :)
Exactly and why he didn’t want to be on camera.
@@crazykev6491 thats what I was thinking!
@@crazykev6491 he could be moving to Mex to be a missionary and that would be a reason why he would not want to be on camera
@@FelixGonzalezM true
You can still not be a fan of it, regardless of the benefits in some cases. PSA has collectors by the throat. Horrible customer service, but they know they have a cult-like following in the hobby and can get away with it.
I remember growing up in the 80s I swear there was another home derby show like the one Mike was talking about. Great stuff guy's keep up the good work!
ESPN aired repeats of the original show during the 80's and 90's. He's probably referring to watching those airtimes when he said he saw them as a kid.
@@steelehere1 I remember seeing them on ESPN Classic maybe 10 years ago
I’m a full time phone flipper. It’s so frustrating when you get there and the product isn’t in the condition you thought and the seller plays the “ I’ve been offered more” card . Yes because those people haven’t been here and inspected the product to realize it’s not in as good of shape as advertised to me and everyone else
So true Zach
👍
how can u possibly make $ as a phone flipper. like who's going to sell u low enough to resell it for a profit, after your time n likely fees etc?
@@airplayrule been doing it since iPhone 4 came out . Full time basically since 2018. To answer your question lots of people . A lot of people would never consider shipping there phone or selling it on eBay. To risky
I pay way more than the kiosk at Walmart and still make money . Every time I go to the store there’s people selling to those things . If there’s enough money for them to put kiosk everywhere to people to basically give away their phones to there’s plenty for me to make money on .
Also broken phones are big for me. You’re just not going to sell them locally and there’s a lot of money in them
Wow I have collected for 44 years. I can't believe you buy any card collection without a good 20 power loupe. It also helps to weigh vintage cards if worried about trimming as well as a caliper.
We use the Binford 6100 on all of our collection buys
If I were them...I'd bring a kit....a book with exact measurements of every card, for every year. 4 screw drivers, 2 loupes, and a scale (small ruler) to take precise measurements...specifically in millimeters as that is more exact. Just saying....
I remember watching the reruns of the HR Derby on ESPN 2 when I was a kid, so cool to see those HR Derby cards too bad the T206 cards were reprints
Loved that show!
Big fan of the channel and what you guys do. But as a T206 collector I can assure you those T206 cards are 100% real.
Maybe they told him they were reprints to offer a lowball smoother. The home run derby cards, the lew alcindor rc and the ryan rc tend to lean towards that...
Curious… how you figure?
@@CHASINGCARDBOARD I'm with Joe. One way to tell is the slight offset printing between the black border and the color passes on the front.
I agree….the t206 cards all look fine.
Love this perspective, now I'm questioning everyone lol
I hope you guys know what you are talking about with the t206s. Most reprints or fakes are better centered and the image/ color are the tell tale signs. In the view pics I see here they appear to be real with honest/ uneven wear. Also, the text /font is the obvious give away. You all seem to be overly focused on the feel. We all.know you all don't handle raw t206s all that often are you sure you didn't jump the gun?
Well we’ve seen more than you think. We didn’t start handling cards when we put out this show. So if we went back and bought them, would you be an interested buyer?
@@CHASINGCARDBOARD I'm with PMN here. There are definitely reprints but it's the backs that make them obvious. There is no real reason to fake a Krause Sweet Cap, which from the video looks like honest wear and printing. There are lots of shellacked fronts out there that feel smooth...but are real. I would actually be an interested buyer if you went back.
@@jasongeorge7209 hey Jason, it’s Drew from Tobacco Row! 100% agree with your sentiments.
Honest mistake of course on their end, but I also tend to agree that those t206 were real.
Hope the guy didn’t trash them..
The t206’s look legit for sure
@@leftyndv10 lol man if he trashed them then they should make it right
The guy felt like your offer was trying to rook him. I thought your offer was a bit low tbh. But anyways.
Cards were in really rough shape. He’s on the dfw FB marketplace. Go get them!
Lol
I disagree....based on what I saw and the condition.......yeah, $1200 was plenty fair frankly.
Not calling Mike old, but the age difference in you two, Ty, you having Mike around to learn from is Awesome!!! That Knowledge Is Priceless!!!
Ty walks around with a notebook, just taking notes from Mike. 😂
Thanks. Tough luck the last couple of episodes though the presentation is as always top-notch. Get 'em next time! #smellyourcards Have a great one!
Thanks for watching!
Great episode. You guys are the best!
Thanks for watching.
Excited for the TN video
Same
Best RUclips channel for cards..
Thanks for watching.
Loved watching the home run show
Those T206s were 100% real. Nice job guys.
Nah. They were fake. They had a gloss to them, too stiff and felt kinda like plastic. I felt them.
C’mon Mike, that tobacco issue is a T207…
I totally screwed that up and I just blanked
@@BaseballCollector , I will let ya slide this one time ;).
All jokes aside tho, was there some crackling on those t206 that wasn’t showing in the vids well? Because just from the limited shots of film, they all looked legit to me. They didn’t have any of the crackle look to them common with tea.
Color and nameplate looked spot on as well, as did the uneven corner wear and bit of loss on the Joss.
You mentioned a gloss, which the T207’s do have for sure, T206 a little less in that regard of course.
Thanks for watching!
Yo the knowledge IV gained from this video was amazing💯 Love the content🤙😜😁🤘💯💖💯
Thanks for watching!
Might want to double check all that info as it sounds like it was 95% incorrect
Another great episode. I love the diversity of stories and cards you guys show.
Thanks
Can’t wait till next episode enjoy the watch
Thanks for watching.
Another great episode!
Thanks!!
I would of thought the Ryan RC and those 59s would have been worth close to $1,200.
Condition is key.
I had no idea there were "Home Run Derby" baseball cards. I have the entire TV series on DVD. One season in 1959 at the Los Angeles "Wrigley Field." Fun show.
Yeah so cool
Myself not a vintage guy, but I do love the history & nostalgia. Learning a ton from you both & I would of done $130, that was classic lol. Kool meeting you Mike at Frank & Sons.
Thanks for watching!
easiest way to spot a fake is under magnification. The image is made up of tiny honeycomb shaped dots and the black ink in the borders and writing is always one solid color. That being said, the majority of vintage graded 7 and above is usually trimmed
Good to knwo
Exactly.....no loupe? Why? Always bring one (better yet -bring TWO)....and bring beat samples of vintage cards to have as a reference/baseline. Then, there's no doubt. Most forgers cannot replicate the dots or honeycombs......but sometimes that is only revealed via visual analysis by LOUPE.
Way to show the whole story of some deals that didn’t work along with the deals that do work. All things cardboard is a fun watch.
Thanks for watching!
Great video guys as always 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Thanks for watching.
I watched the derby reruns growing up. Liked to see the interactions with the hitters.
So fun
I love their negotiating, they play it down like they are complete crap cards but hey we will buy it all and we can still move it and price it up 5x higher in our store. So, still all good and every episode like this is the same. 😂
Wow, what a small world. I had actually reached out to this guy as well to chat about the T206’s specifically. Didn’t feel right about it and didn’t chase it down.
Great video as always guys!
He's since taken the fake cards out of his listing, which is the right thing to do.
Ya probably should have bought them if the price was right as those T206’s are definitely not fake. Didn’t Look like he had anything special in there though…..the Joss was rough and the rest were commons.
Yo guys. Its critical to have a jewelers loop, mini microscope, flash light and other important tools before you set out on these collection visits. Come on! 😄 Not a bad episode though. The cards that had been sitting in the view presses will still sell to raw card collectors just fine especially if they look good. As long as descriptions in listings are honest and state defects. Eye appeal is a magical thing especially with the ultra vintage. I've seen some worn torn cards sell for big money that left me scratching my head.
Any decent phone camera will work when you zoom in.
Along with that - 4 sets of screw drivers, a notebook with detailed notes on exact measurements down to the millimeters for different year cards and manufacturers, a millimeter scale (small metal ruler), AND a book of baseline beater samples of actual cards that you can use for comparison. They don't have to be in perfect shape...just beaters and no name players.....this way you have something REAL to compare it to (a BASELINE). 2 Loupes ...not just one.
@@DEE-o4v "beater samples" excellent suggestion. Especially if you can get stuff super cheap to help you verify the staples. I;m thinking like '35 Diamond Star or '33 Goudey , T205's. The fakes are getting really good. I've seen people go out of there way and stain cards with tea to get patina lol.
Ok
Look!!!! 👁🗨 👁🗨......It's Mike & Ty..🖐..🌊
Thanks for watching.
Great episode, lads. Very educational in spotting trimmed and fake cards. 👍
Thanks for watching!
Artificial Intelligence will benefit grading. As an investment buyer, or a hobby collector, we need to eliminate the human element from grading and AI presents the opportunity for that.
Especially PSA the most inconsistent graders on the planet, Jekyll and Hyde graders
Yeah I've been saying , and will continue to .. I think its just a matter of time , before every card shop has a machine , and you just walk in pay the shop fee and get your card graded .. Same way every time , and you get a grade and a slab on the spot , and the grade you get is the grade you get .
Thanks for watching.
The problem. With grading is the cost. For me.
Great video, fun to see both of your passion about the history of the cards
Awesome! Thanks for watching.
I never send my cards for grading because its a scam.
The fact you can get different grades from the exact same card if you submit it multiple times is ridiculous.
Its just a racket.
I agree man, it’s a racket and they control the population of certain cards.
@@officialghetty not to mention they get things wrong all the time.
In the pokemon community people would get artists to sign cards (which they artist intentionally personalizes so people cant resell) and then they would use chamicals to remove the personalization.
Meanwhile PSA was grading those cards as not altered even tho the person clearly used chemicals on the card.
The grading process is ridiculius. Some guy has like 45 seconds to look at your card othereise they are cutting into profit margins.
They literally take no time assesing each card.
My bad for the typos im on a phone with fat fingers.
30$ to get one card looked at for 60 seconds by a minimum wage employee....
Pass
I agree... and am sorry that these two guys promote the racket..., and you can see why, as they have alot invested into the grading racket.
All good, except for the blind allegiance to TPG. They are corrupt, inconsistent, and can't grade or authenticate any better than an experienced collector.
Who is TPG?
@@CHASINGCARDBOARD Third Party Grading. PSA, Beckett, SGC and the like. You know... those guys who can't detect alteration, take forever to grade your cards, and issue better grades for "preferred" submitters. Those guys!
@@markstein1916 Right on… we love raw cards. We love slabbed cards. Simple as that for us.

I knew those HR Derby cards were destined for Mike’s collection!
Haha
2nd watch i absolutely love this show
Thanks
A LOT of T206 cards were counterfeited in the 80s along with Pete Rose rookies.
Yup
I agree with the seller about grading. But to each their own, just have fun collecting however you choose.
Agreed
LOL You guys missed the boat on the T206s!!! You didn't even know what a T207 was!! Better stick to the shiny graded stuff.
Yeah, if you came for perfection... we aren't the right guys. Perfectly imperfect.
Great episode as usual, although did the seller of the collection not want to be on camera AFTER (or maybe even the footage was removed) the deal fell through and he's likely aware of the fake cards? Just seems odd as you typically always have sellers faces etc on the show and based off others offering ridiculously high and likely not familiar with the "fake" cards he didn't want it to be known. Just my 2 cents :)
Thanks for watching!
Love the video as usual!! What is the song at the end? Thanks guys. Keep Chasing!!
Not sure.
I’m shocked you even made an offer. Specially after all the fake stuff and in screw downs. Then when he said he didn’t want to be on camera, I’d be thanks byeeee. Why take a chance and waste $$
For the video lol
👍
Yeah, especially when this gentleman wants to be anonymous???...

Great episode again
Awesome! Thanks for watching.
Mike probably isn’t as old as Ty thinks as I’m 44 and watched Home Run Derby on ESPN Classic all of the time in the 90’s.
It's probably safe to assume Ty was just having fun with Mike
@@CHASINGCARDBOARD I realize that but also let people know it was on during the 90's

Another great episode. Hope you sent Beau a chasing cardboard shirt after doing ur eBay video lol. Beau is a good friend of mine. Anyway. I always watching these negotiations from a buyer and seller side of things bc obviously you guys are both. I guess what I’m always curious about is what is the number you guys are willing to buy and what kinda margins are looking to achieve. I have a lot of football cards right now, 1800 cards or so and I’ve done the work and research to know it had a $1300 eBay sold for value on the low end and with a lot of those cards are free. I had a dealer offer me $200 for the entire lot and I was geez dude you need to make $1100 profit on my cards in order to buy??? I understand it takes time to list on eBay or hold cards that maybe don’t sell right away, but that’s every dealer. Hell some cards sit in peoples showcases at shows for years, I’ve seen it. Just curious from potential buyers out there, what % do you normally offer to sellers in order for the juice to be worth the squeeze
I have a shop and really depending on what cards are in the collection, are they gonna be fast moving, desirable cards or more long tail, but just off your numbers of 1800 cards with a potential value of $1300,which sounds like a lot of low end cards, being less than a $1 each average,I'd be around $500-600,once again depends on the players in there, fast sellers vs. slow sellers. If it's just a handful of cards, say 5-10 cards I will pay higher than 45-50%, say around 60-70%. Collections take longer to process and go through so the margins have to be better.
That’s a lot of cards. Hours upon hours of work. You can’t look at it as just a quick flip . You have to think about the time you have to put in to that and if you have a bunch of 50 cent cards. I mean it could take years of those to sell. It’s not like you throw them up on eBay and they just sell the next day.
Thanks for watching.
You guys are so lucky I took John's cards out of the old screw-downs before you got there. You'd have had to spend another day just removing them.
Haha. Thanks!!
I'm glad Mike didn't lick the cards...
I'm glad that you didn't show that poor man's face in the video so his name and reputation will not be tainted by you misrepresenting and misidentifying his cards as fake.

I don't love these guys, but in this case, I do agree with them. I think considering the condition and what was there...$1200 is about right and I don't think those T206's were real. Something looked wrong based on what little I saw.
