For a rare moment in the series, Kirito couldn’t pull new powers out of his ass. He was up against an equally matched opponent, and had a bit of a disadvantage. It took a combination of character development, quick, thinking, and teamwork for him to win. Think about how rare that is in this series.

Season 1 (the real SAO) would be awesome if they delivered the conclusion properly, but right now, it's just meh. Season 2 is the worst, but at least that scene that is very doujin-able and raise Asuna name to popularity. Season 3 is the best... especially since we have the best waifu on the entire series... no, not the blue hair one, the black one.
