Even more than that, White starts under the impression that color impurity is something that her power needs to "fix", but because Pink's color is structural, there is no impurity to remove; she has nothing for White TO "fix".

I honestly blame CN for cancelling the show. Rebecca wanted to add like two more seasons and CN ruined it, which gave the crewniverse no choice but to squeeze as much as they could, even by not giving white diamond enough screen time
Eh, this is a very shortsighted take. CN ultimately had no choice but to cancel the show because the wedding basically got it pulled of being played in a number of countries which screwed with their funding. No funding = no show. RS herself admitted that CN (whose CEO at the time, and possibly still, was a gay man) did not want to end the show and supported her decision to go through with the wedding. CN then greenlit the movie and SUF despite having "cancelled" the show. Rebecca made a choice she believed was right, but that choice is what led to the shows cancelation because the show could not sustain itself after the wedding episode. I'm not putting blame on either her nor CN, because, ultimately, the actual culprit is the rampant homophobia present across the globe. It's very unfortunate, but it is what it is. Note that I'm not trying to say CN is perfect or anything, but realistically, they let RS have as much of her way as she could get away with and then some. If CN itself really had a problem with SU, they would've never allowed the movie and they most definitely wouldn't have allowed SUF.

So the corruption beam was just the other diamonds stripping the gems of their defining traits and leaving only Pinks impulse. The worst, base form of themselves without governance of their own impulses and emotions. Like a newborn, with only the ability to scream and tantrum but not communicate through higher thinking.

I'm happy people finally get over the "Pink is the true evil in the entire show" mentality. I know she had done some bad things but she learned. She learned and matured to become Rose Quart. I know that doesn't make the bad things she done goes away but it show that she is a good person but was misled.

A theory I still have is that the big Diamond attack, or “the great annihilation light” as I’m calling it, corrupting gems instead of annihilating them wasn’t an accident, White influenced it to do that on purpose so Pink would have a reason to come home, and this added onto why Pink never tried to go to space to begin with

It's true, White Diamond definitely should've been given more screen time and development. In fact when it came to being an antagonist WD didn't get nearly as much attention, Not even after she almost killed Steven by removing his gem.
Very true, she only really got to appear in the finale and the issue was resolved almost immediately, unlike previous antagonists like Jasper and Peridot whom we got to enjoy for many episodes
Sadly SU had to end short due to CN not giving them enough seasons and episodes to make the show play out how they wanted. So thats why it seems rushed.
I'm going back to my original headcanon (with a tweak). The diamonds were all one being and their "birth" was them splitting apart. Also might contribute to their disgust towards fusion.

Nah they just wanted whatever was left of pink(Which was basically just Steven and spinel). They even have a whole song to try and convince him to stay with them.
To be fair, liberation of Yellow's colonies should logically be an ongoing process because it was something that she did for millennia. And you don't spend thousands of years doing something and fix it in 2 years. There also has to be work put into dismantling your armies more than just ordering them to stop. But the bar gets even lower with Blue and White. Not killing others, not making beings suffer, and being polite to others are very low bars. Do Blue and White seriously want medals for that? Come on.
We Need to Talk About the Diamond Blue! I think Blue is an exception to this. While I wouldn't say she's redeemed, it's clear she's definitely changed her attitude towards things. When she talks about having not shattered and not made anyone cry she sounds genuinely proud of the fact, rather than like she's being forced to do something unpleasant, like Yellow and White. Obviously this isn't something to be super proud of, but for someone in her position it is something that would be a big step. She is also the first one to admit the problems with their empire, as well as the first to embrace change. On top of that she knows that "lower lifeforms" (humans) are not as simplistic or so far below them as originally thought. She does refer to Spinel as "one of Pink's treasures", but it's worth nothing her first reaction to hearing about her plight is one of sympathy. Her attitude has developed drastically after Pink "died." The events of the Diamond Days Arc and Steven's attitude were the catalyst to finally push her in that direction fully. Having actually faced her grief and embraced it seems to have cultivated a level of empathy in her. Aside from a one or two hiccups, she pretty much accepts Steven's way of life and ideas immediately.
I more or less agree with your assessments about Blue Diamond, except I do think she has been redeemed, or at the very least, is on the path towards redemption.
A thing to mention, is that her realization that humans could understand her happened from talking to Greg, before Steven even knew he should try to redeem them.
I think that mentality wise she's the most progressed, but Yellow's doing the most to actually substantially fix her transgressions. She's essentially spending all her time bringing the people she killed back to life, and she mentions even doing so for the cluster which could take ions. While she doesn't exactly sound happy about it, it definitely has the most impact imo and is the best way to atone for her actions
It's so twisted that White Diamond thought of all this as a game that she had to beat Pink at. White let the others suffer unfathomable levels of depression, anger and grief and it took a mental toll on both Blue and Yellow. All of it: The corruption, the war, the shatterings, even giving the Earth to Pink- all of this White trying to prove a point to Pink. WTH.
I don't think White Diamond suspected Pink was Rose, I think she was just in denial. White supresses all of her feelings, including grief, so she would delude herself into thinking Pink is just messing with them and she'll come back eventually. Because the alternative would be too much to handle while mantaining her facade.

There was so much that didn't make it into the show, and giving Rebecca the chance to elaborate on what they didn't get to show us tied together so many different loose threads, especially White since she was the biggest casualty of the show's cancellation
Finally watching this, I'm halfway through - at the reveal that White Diamond knew Pink wasn't dead - and dear gosh! This actually does go with her reaction to finally reuniting with "Pink", or rather her lack thereof I remember one comment I saw putting it best, when White Diamond asked "Did you have fun?" what she really meant was "Are you done f---ing around?" This entire time she was aware of everything going on and that it was all because of Pink, messing up like she knew she would, and was simply waiting for her to finally come crawling back to admit she was wrong and finally fall into line That is...pretty horrible, and that's not even getting into what happened to the other gems!
I agree that White Diamond definitely wasn't properly shown enough as a character in the original Steven Universe series, especially since she's the main antagonist of the series responsible for all the terrible things that the great Diamond authority. This is a great and informative video about White Diamond as a character, her character flaws, her history which wasn't fully conveyed in the series, her problems with Pink Diamond, how White was the only one who probably realized that Pink wasn't shattered, and how she was defeated by the simple fact that she was proven wrong once. In truth, Steven wasn't really able to convince White Diamond with words or even actions. It took White taking Steven's gem and seeing for herself that Pink Diamond was truly gone that White started to lose. White couldn't accept that she was wrong, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't just make herself right. This definitely allowed Steven to finally get her to stop her evil ways. I do agree that White Diamond still hasn't done enough to redeem herself, even during Steven Universe Future.
I feel like White Diamond knew that Pink would survive the attack on Earth, especially since White knows that Pink's shield can withstand their blasts. She probably just didn't care about the state of the other gems on Earth because why would White care about a bunch of "side characters" that don't really mean anything to her in the long run? It's like, would an author care about the lives of that society that lived on that planet they just blew up to further the main protagonist's story arc? Probably not. White Diamond is like the author of a story, and Pink Diamond is like her main character that she puts through hell in order to further her development in the story. At least, that's how she sees it--unfortunately, said main character has a mind of her own and rebels against the author which causes a lot of problems when you look at all the awful things White has done to her.
The way white diamond t-poses kind of reminds me of how raccoons and other animals will stand up to make themselves look bigger. I’m not sure if it’s intentional, but it’d be a neat little detail if it’s meant to display white diamonds dominance over the other gems.

tbh, im just happy to be living my 2010s self by watching this video... Steven Universe really shaped an entire generation. It really was just sad that the Crewniverse had to wrap up that entire arc so quickly. I would definitely love to get my hands on any official serialised content if there are any created by Rebecca and her team!
One part that you forgot to mention about the Id is the principle of Creation and the Principle of Destruction. Pink Diamond/Rose was the only Gem ever to have a baby like us. And that meant some (ahem) adult activity with Greg. Freud talks a lot about that type of activity in his work. As Rose, her powers were about healing and she loved life. But Rose could never, ever get away from the trauma that she had as Pink. As Pink, her powers were destructive. Rebecca said she was severely depressed and traumatized. She was filled with self-loathing and guilt for everything that happened. And all of that destroyed her. Creation and Destruction. She wanted to create life and the price was her death.
I feel like White Diamond was so caught up in perfecting her empire that she doesn’t even consider her own Diamond comrades and her soldiers that she’s clouded in her own ideals. (Also, I want the Roundtable to do the Rise and downfall of Tara Strong. Given that she’s now moving like a degenerate on Twitter and going in depth on who cut ties with her)

For me, I was already an Adult when I watched SU and saw the ending. So I could see what they wanted to do and appreciate White despite the poor storytelling that came with her limited appearance and time due to being cancelled.

And just like White Diamond; Pear Butter, Bright Mac, and Grand Pear had limited appearences. We also didn’t get that much information, especially how PB and BM died. Then again, it’s a kid’s show. But, they handled the situation in a mature way.

If we do get a SU continuation, I'd like to see the origin of the Diamonds so that Steven can gain a better understanding of his mom and make peace with his general feelings of her, regardless of what he decides. Maybe it could also have Steven inviting the DeMayos to a big reunion party for him, Greg, & the Gems since he got in touch with them after he moved out and wanted Greg to make peace with them to show a familial contrast
If (wich I do think is likely) Steven universe ever gets a continuation or reboot I would love to see whites character explored more in the light of a narcissistic parental figure, she shows a lot of narcissistic traits in her general character and also the mind games she plays with pink causing detriment to pink, the other diamonds and even the rest of the gem population and the universe as a whole purely to prove a point and exert power over pink as her motherly figure, idk i could be wrong Abt this and if I am pls correct me if I am but I think white is a good portrayal of a narcissistic abusive parental figure and I think it would be super interesting to see this aspect explored in more detail (pls Rebecca sugar and CN make a pg13+ Steven universe and my life is urs🙏🙏🙏 )

This video definitely helped me gain a better understanding of White and the gravity of her actions. How they affected the rest of the universe, her family, and even herself. It really puts into perspective the fact that she is the overarching villain, the one responsible for the cycle of abuse and the conflict that stemmed from it. A fact that I’ve always known but many easily forgot. White’s lack of screentime and focus is one of the reasons people considered Pink the "true villain". The Superego, Ego, and Id dynamic between the Diamomds is immensely interesting. Especially in regards to Pink and White. It’s no wonder they both have more realistic Diamond cuts. If there’s another installment I would LOVE to see White and the other Diamonds continue to develop and grow *without* Steven.
It’s such a shame too because white diamond’s personality after she was changed and how it plays along with the other diamonds is peak comedy 😭 The fandom makes memes about how hilariously overly-dramatic they can be, and if we got those extra couple seasons Rebecca wanted we could’ve see it play out more. Never felt so cheated.
I understand that white diamond has had at least a small amount of character development since her debut. she doesn't see herself as perfect anymore, and is willing to change as a person, that's not the part I'm questioning. See, with the other diamonds, you can make sense of their changes in behavior. Blue never liked being a dictator, but just didn't speak up about it, so she fit into her new role extremely easily. Pink didn't tolerate any of it once she found out the truth. Yellow seemingly wants to just "do things right" and "what's right" is whatever white diamond says is right. However: white diamond's character only changes after she finds out, she is INCAPABLE of murdering steven. and from that point on, although she experiences genuine confusion and embarrassment, everything else feels condescending, sarcastic, and like a caricature of how she views the crystal gems to be. she doesn't express remorse at all until literally every other character in the show is doing it, she's the last one to say it, but her words, "i hurt everyone in the entire universe", are exaggerated compared to the others. not just factually, but emotionally. yes she hurt a lot of people, she hurt all gems, but there's still life out there that she didn't hurt. what I'm getting at, is that i think white diamond's unbending compliance is a FASCADE. she has had less character development than the other diamonds, and is somehow acting so nice that it even annoys steven! her sarcastic remark "judging anything based on appearance is wrong" when looking at the planet, makes steven scoff. My hypothesis, is that she's putting on a facade because its easier than fighting against a person you can't kill. she's waiting. she's waiting however many decades, centuries, or millennia that steven may live, until she can finally do whatever it is she is planning on doing. i do not think her plan is to return to the way things were in era 1/2. i don't think it is that severe, but i do think she plans to do something that no crystal gem would approve of. because she has been given no reason to feel any way other than frustrated, scared, and humiliated, in front of everyone she wronged, and everyone she used to have control over. she's bitter, she's petty, and she wants to do something about it.
This would be really interesting. Like she is able to admit she was wrong about this one thing as is now just biding her time to get into a position to total control and authority so she can try the same thing again with some minor adjustments

Wow white diamond is so aspirational now that you put it that way ,sure it's messed up what she did but her goals of being perfect inorder to be well liked but in the process removing all of your personality is very relatable
Same exact thing with Greg's parents. I mean even Cousin Andy was a bit rough but even he said Greg was only the first one to leave the family, so it's likely either Greg's parents or several DeMayo's were at least semi toxic or stuck in their ways. Greg probably left first because he was the most Id of his family, which is why Rose connected with him perfectly. He had Super Ego and Ego, but ultimately he was always for free expression and how it's an important part. I think any Super Ego things like trying to take Steven to a doctor due to being scared of how Steven's alien nature would be handled or not really giving him school even after he became rich was more his own weaknesses. Steven, being an Id given his own Ego and Super Ego from his humanity thus felt unfulfilled with what he missed out on because Pink thived without her Super Ego as did Greg with both of them free. Steven needed more structure than he got. The Gems were sort of a structure but were aliens and thus unconventional while still providing some support. It's clear Steven was raised far better than Pink in terms of affection and care, but still had needs that even his providers struggled to deal with in the long term, especially since the Crystal Gems only had the Id as a leader and thus had their own issues that went unchecked even if the freedom they received was something required at the time. But the damage had been done even from conception of the Diamonds, because critical and missing information was clear for every single Diamond. Pink had control over creation and destruction of life of both organic and gemkind, as she was ultimately the instinct and passion. Pink discovered her healing powers through actually expressing herself and living on Earth and for Earth's benefit. Blue, being melancholic, only expressed sadness because her needs were not met either. Being able to incite joy herself only after her breakthrough. Yellow was action, so she seemed to only be able to disrupt action until her breakthrough. White as discussed by you allowed herself to live through others as she thought other should live as her. I think they all had these powers through their forging, but never could truly unlock them without soul searching. Creating gems was natural and easy as sweating. But once their powers were allowed to not oppress gems but uplift them, I think they actually figured out other applications. Suppression was a White specific thing. It makes sense that she would have some purpose of authority to put the foot down when necessary, but would have been great as a low Empathy therapist with confidence who could feel a gem's desires verbatim and help boost their own judgement of themselves. The leaders seemed to ironically be both the birth of a gem but also the support they would need. And judging from Pink being able to help as well as hurt organics, it would make sense for the instinctual one to help organic life flourish. I think being better was a correct assumption, but for all we know the diamonds were a dying planet's people's desire to help other planets facing a similar downfall. I don't understand how there would be miscommunication otherwise. Homeworld seems to have started as the incubator for the Diamonds perhaps like the Cluster because the people there were already on death's door or something happened. A planet splitting to make the Diamonds seems a bit extreme if the point was cohabitation. And perfection with no direction would make sense as White and the Diamonds might have been the only Diamonds to have extremely simple instructions. To be better. To make everything better. White took this as her only identity but rolled with the surface level definition. The ugly definition of kind voices with a smile regardless of emotions. Blue and Yellow took themselves as extensions of that even though they were likely the most mediative. Yellow keeping peace where she could through action and protection of the body. Blue for emotion and protection of feelings. While they abused Pink it's clear they did subconsciously value her. They knew how to make appearances but also somewhat understood the Id of Pink, but weren't immune to White's control so folded under her and only secretly helped. Pink was only told she made everything worse by White, but it was clear she had a purpose of appeasing needs. With complete understanding of her actual purpose, the Diamonds would be a literal utopia for Gem and Organic life alike. Yes, Gems absorb life but also Steven and Rose could heal damage from injectors of Rose's own essence. So I think the point was for gems to Grow here and there, not entirely wipe planets, and then Pink would be damage control for the organic scars. I think the massive Kindegartens were maybe more of the problem than the creation of a Gem or two here and there. Just like real life, mass production is the stuff that really makes an environment suffer more than a log cabin made in one year until the trees regrow. Gems have long Incubation periods, but with a bit of Pink tears and possibly other Diamonds pitching in, they could heal smaller scale holes. Or the holes would be more of a den for animals later?
It's true that White and the other Diamonds aren't there yet by the time the show has ended, but she's definitely on a trajectory towards further improvement. I get the impression that IF a potential revival decides to go the "married with kids" route for Steven, the Diamonds may end up having their rough edges mellowed out by the role of "cool jetsetting aunties"

35:35 white is a conservative grandmother who controlled her daughter's life until the daughter ran away from her family, had a child who resemble her and in the act of childbirth ended up dead, the child is the age that the mother was when the mother ran away from the family and now the child goes to the family and then the family acts as if no time has passed when the kid confronts the grandmother, the grandmother treats the kid as the mother. When the kid proves that they are not the same as the mom the grandmother has a change of actions and emotions. That is what I see the white role to be.
Really enjoying these character analysis videos. They are very well done and I hope to see more. Also, I'd like to see a new video focused on fusions... between Steven and characters from other media. If Steven Universe ever did a proper crossover, then you know a unique new fusion would be part of the equation. What would they look like? What would they be called? And, most importantly, what unique abilities would they possess?
The diamonds are super interesting characters they are complicated there conflicting and opposites to each other but also compliments each other alsoo can i just say were really doing this steven universe character deep dives aaaaaaaaa and white diamond for that matter i god i love you
When the ending first aired it left a bitter taste in my mouth, and for a while I thought it made me no longer like SU. But recently I decided to watch it through again from the start now that I've learned more about the production (mainly the ending getting suddenly limited to 6 episodes). I also convinced my friend to watch it with me as he had skipped it due to being in that highschool "I'm too old for cartoons" phase (he loves cartoons btw 😂). Well my partner, who for years said she didn't wanna watch SU, ended up joining us. Now she's hooked and can't wait for watch night! She knows nothing about the show (no spoilers from us!), I watched every episode when it was airing, and my friend knows major plot points (including Rose's truth). It's very intertaining having so many different viewpoints while watching it again 😊
Considering what we know from future that stevens gem gives him what he needs for the situation, became quarts like to fight jasper, speed to help and save everyone, and the loud yelling to be heard when stressed out. A lot of his memories are when he's usually mostly alone like in the palise or away from just about everyone when locked up. I think it's interesting how the memories are being given by pink steven/ his gem to help him in the situation figure out what's really going on.
White vs Pink is Collective vs Individual, and the answer to both of these battles is that you need both. A true collective can only function at it's best when individuals are embraced and allowed to exist. Beach City and Little Homeworld are perfect examples of that very concept. Rebecca chose to have a gay wedding over a more fleshed out ending, and as much as it pains me as a fan of the show, she made the correct choice.
Eh, this is a very shortsighted take. CN ultimately had no choice but to cancel the show because the wedding basically got it pulled of being played in a number of countries which screwed with their funding. No funding = no show. RS herself admitted that CN (whose CEO at the time, and possibly still, was a gay man) did not want to end the show and supported her decision to go through with the wedding. CN then greenlit the movie and SUF despite having "cancelled" the show. Rebecca made a choice she believed was right, but that choice is what led to the shows cancelation because the show could not sustain itself after the wedding episode. I'm not putting blame on either her nor CN, because, ultimately, the actual culprit is the rampant homophobia present across the globe. It's very unfortunate, but it is what it is.
Note that I'm not trying to say CN is perfect or anything, but realistically, they let RS have as much of her way as she could get away with and then some. If CN itself really had a problem with SU, they would've never allowed the movie and they most definitely wouldn't have allowed SUF.

I'm happy people finally get over the "Pink is the true evil in the entire show" mentality. I know she had done some bad things but she learned. She learned and matured to become Rose Quart. I know that doesn't make the bad things she done goes away but it show that she is a good person but was misled.

It's true, White Diamond definitely should've been given more screen time and development. In fact when it came to being an antagonist WD didn't get nearly as much attention, Not even after she almost killed Steven by removing his gem.
Very true, she only really got to appear in the finale and the issue was resolved almost immediately, unlike previous antagonists like Jasper and Peridot whom we got to enjoy for many episodes
Sadly SU had to end short due to CN not giving them enough seasons and episodes to make the show play out how they wanted. So thats why it seems rushed.

Nah they just wanted whatever was left of pink(Which was basically just Steven and spinel). They even have a whole song to try and convince him to stay with them.
To be fair, liberation of Yellow's colonies should logically be an ongoing process because it was something that she did for millennia. And you don't spend thousands of years doing something and fix it in 2 years. There also has to be work put into dismantling your armies more than just ordering them to stop.
But the bar gets even lower with Blue and White. Not killing others, not making beings suffer, and being polite to others are very low bars. Do Blue and White seriously want medals for that? Come on.
We Need to Talk About the Diamond Blue! I think Blue is an exception to this. While I wouldn't say she's redeemed, it's clear she's definitely changed her attitude towards things. When she talks about having not shattered and not made anyone cry she sounds genuinely proud of the fact, rather than like she's being forced to do something unpleasant, like Yellow and White. Obviously this isn't something to be super proud of, but for someone in her position it is something that would be a big step. She is also the first one to admit the problems with their empire, as well as the first to embrace change. On top of that she knows that "lower lifeforms" (humans) are not as simplistic or so far below them as originally thought.
She does refer to Spinel as "one of Pink's treasures", but it's worth nothing her first reaction to hearing about her plight is one of sympathy. Her attitude has developed drastically after Pink "died." The events of the Diamond Days Arc and Steven's attitude were the catalyst to finally push her in that direction fully. Having actually faced her grief and embraced it seems to have cultivated a level of empathy in her. Aside from a one or two hiccups, she pretty much accepts Steven's way of life and ideas immediately.

A thing to mention, is that her realization that humans could understand her happened from talking to Greg, before Steven even knew he should try to redeem them.
I think that mentality wise she's the most progressed, but Yellow's doing the most to actually substantially fix her transgressions. She's essentially spending all her time bringing the people she killed back to life, and she mentions even doing so for the cluster which could take ions. While she doesn't exactly sound happy about it, it definitely has the most impact imo and is the best way to atone for her actions
It's so twisted that White Diamond thought of all this as a game that she had to beat Pink at. White let the others suffer unfathomable levels of depression, anger and grief and it took a mental toll on both Blue and Yellow. All of it: The corruption, the war, the shatterings, even giving the Earth to Pink- all of this White trying to prove a point to Pink. WTH.

I don't think White Diamond suspected Pink was Rose, I think she was just in denial.
White supresses all of her feelings, including grief, so she would delude herself into thinking Pink is just messing with them and she'll come back eventually. Because the alternative would be too much to handle while mantaining her facade.

Finally watching this, I'm halfway through - at the reveal that White Diamond knew Pink wasn't dead - and dear gosh! This actually does go with her reaction to finally reuniting with "Pink", or rather her lack thereof
I remember one comment I saw putting it best, when White Diamond asked "Did you have fun?" what she really meant was "Are you done f---ing around?"
This entire time she was aware of everything going on and that it was all because of Pink, messing up like she knew she would, and was simply waiting for her to finally come crawling back to admit she was wrong and finally fall into line

I agree that White Diamond definitely wasn't properly shown enough as a character in the original Steven Universe series, especially since she's the main antagonist of the series responsible for all the terrible things that the great Diamond authority. This is a great and informative video about White Diamond as a character, her character flaws, her history which wasn't fully conveyed in the series, her problems with Pink Diamond, how White was the only one who probably realized that Pink wasn't shattered, and how she was defeated by the simple fact that she was proven wrong once. In truth, Steven wasn't really able to convince White Diamond with words or even actions. It took White taking Steven's gem and seeing for herself that Pink Diamond was truly gone that White started to lose. White couldn't accept that she was wrong, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't just make herself right. This definitely allowed Steven to finally get her to stop her evil ways. I do agree that White Diamond still hasn't done enough to redeem herself, even during Steven Universe Future.
I honestly hope they continue Steven universe it’s literally my childhood.

I feel like White Diamond knew that Pink would survive the attack on Earth, especially since White knows that Pink's shield can withstand their blasts. She probably just didn't care about the state of the other gems on Earth because why would White care about a bunch of "side characters" that don't really mean anything to her in the long run? It's like, would an author care about the lives of that society that lived on that planet they just blew up to further the main protagonist's story arc? Probably not.
White Diamond is like the author of a story, and Pink Diamond is like her main character that she puts through hell in order to further her development in the story. At least, that's how she sees it--unfortunately, said main character has a mind of her own and rebels against the author which causes a lot of problems when you look at all the awful things White has done to her.

One part that you forgot to mention about the Id is the principle of Creation and the Principle of Destruction. Pink Diamond/Rose was the only Gem ever to have a baby like us. And that meant some (ahem) adult activity with Greg. Freud talks a lot about that type of activity in his work. As Rose, her powers were about healing and she loved life. But Rose could never, ever get away from the trauma that she had as Pink. As Pink, her powers were destructive. Rebecca said she was severely depressed and traumatized. She was filled with self-loathing and guilt for everything that happened. And all of that destroyed her. Creation and Destruction. She wanted to create life and the price was her death.
White diamond could've been up there with mr perfect cell but cartoon network did her dirty and left her being first form frieza 😮💨

For me, I was already an Adult when I watched SU and saw the ending. So I could see what they wanted to do and appreciate White despite the poor storytelling that came with her limited appearance and time due to being cancelled.

This video definitely helped me gain a better understanding of White and the gravity of her actions. How they affected the rest of the universe, her family, and even herself.
It really puts into perspective the fact that she is the overarching villain, the one responsible for the cycle of abuse and the conflict that stemmed from it. A fact that I’ve always known but many easily forgot. White’s lack of screentime and focus is one of the reasons people considered Pink the "true villain".
The Superego, Ego, and Id dynamic between the Diamomds is immensely interesting. Especially in regards to Pink and White. It’s no wonder they both have more realistic Diamond cuts.
If there’s another installment I would LOVE to see White and the other Diamonds continue to develop and grow *without* Steven.
It’s such a shame too because white diamond’s personality after she was changed and how it plays along with the other diamonds is peak comedy 😭 The fandom makes memes about how hilariously overly-dramatic they can be, and if we got those extra couple seasons Rebecca wanted we could’ve see it play out more. Never felt so cheated.
I understand that white diamond has had at least a small amount of character development since her debut. she doesn't see herself as perfect anymore, and is willing to change as a person, that's not the part I'm questioning.
See, with the other diamonds, you can make sense of their changes in behavior.
Blue never liked being a dictator, but just didn't speak up about it, so she fit into her new role extremely easily.
Pink didn't tolerate any of it once she found out the truth.
Yellow seemingly wants to just "do things right" and "what's right" is whatever white diamond says is right.
However:
white diamond's character only changes after she finds out, she is INCAPABLE of murdering steven.
and from that point on, although she experiences genuine confusion and embarrassment, everything else feels condescending, sarcastic, and like a caricature of how she views the crystal gems to be.
she doesn't express remorse at all until literally every other character in the show is doing it, she's the last one to say it,
but her words, "i hurt everyone in the entire universe", are exaggerated compared to the others. not just factually, but emotionally. yes she hurt a lot of people, she hurt all gems, but there's still life out there that she didn't hurt.
what I'm getting at, is that i think white diamond's unbending compliance is a FASCADE.
she has had less character development than the other diamonds, and is somehow acting so nice that it even annoys steven!
her sarcastic remark "judging anything based on appearance is wrong" when looking at the planet, makes steven scoff.
My hypothesis, is that she's putting on a facade because its easier than fighting against a person you can't kill. she's waiting. she's waiting however many decades, centuries, or millennia that steven may live, until she can finally do whatever it is she is planning on doing.
i do not think her plan is to return to the way things were in era 1/2. i don't think it is that severe, but i do think she plans to do something that no crystal gem would approve of.
because she has been given no reason to feel any way other than frustrated, scared, and humiliated, in front of everyone she wronged, and everyone she used to have control over. she's bitter, she's petty, and she wants to do something about it.

Wow white diamond is so aspirational now that you put it that way ,sure it's messed up what she did but her goals of being perfect inorder to be well liked but in the process removing all of your personality is very relatable
White Diamond is giving major narcissist vibes. She sees her subjects as extensions of herself and sees everyone tas functions/tools.
Same exact thing with Greg's parents. I mean even Cousin Andy was a bit rough but even he said Greg was only the first one to leave the family, so it's likely either Greg's parents or several DeMayo's were at least semi toxic or stuck in their ways. Greg probably left first because he was the most Id of his family, which is why Rose connected with him perfectly. He had Super Ego and Ego, but ultimately he was always for free expression and how it's an important part. I think any Super Ego things like trying to take Steven to a doctor due to being scared of how Steven's alien nature would be handled or not really giving him school even after he became rich was more his own weaknesses. Steven, being an Id given his own Ego and Super Ego from his humanity thus felt unfulfilled with what he missed out on because Pink thived without her Super Ego as did Greg with both of them free. Steven needed more structure than he got. The Gems were sort of a structure but were aliens and thus unconventional while still providing some support. It's clear Steven was raised far better than Pink in terms of affection and care, but still had needs that even his providers struggled to deal with in the long term, especially since the Crystal Gems only had the Id as a leader and thus had their own issues that went unchecked even if the freedom they received was something required at the time. But the damage had been done even from conception of the Diamonds, because critical and missing information was clear for every single Diamond. Pink had control over creation and destruction of life of both organic and gemkind, as she was ultimately the instinct and passion. Pink discovered her healing powers through actually expressing herself and living on Earth and for Earth's benefit. Blue, being melancholic, only expressed sadness because her needs were not met either. Being able to incite joy herself only after her breakthrough. Yellow was action, so she seemed to only be able to disrupt action until her breakthrough. White as discussed by you allowed herself to live through others as she thought other should live as her. I think they all had these powers through their forging, but never could truly unlock them without soul searching. Creating gems was natural and easy as sweating. But once their powers were allowed to not oppress gems but uplift them, I think they actually figured out other applications. Suppression was a White specific thing. It makes sense that she would have some purpose of authority to put the foot down when necessary, but would have been great as a low Empathy therapist with confidence who could feel a gem's desires verbatim and help boost their own judgement of themselves. The leaders seemed to ironically be both the birth of a gem but also the support they would need. And judging from Pink being able to help as well as hurt organics, it would make sense for the instinctual one to help organic life flourish. I think being better was a correct assumption, but for all we know the diamonds were a dying planet's people's desire to help other planets facing a similar downfall. I don't understand how there would be miscommunication otherwise. Homeworld seems to have started as the incubator for the Diamonds perhaps like the Cluster because the people there were already on death's door or something happened. A planet splitting to make the Diamonds seems a bit extreme if the point was cohabitation. And perfection with no direction would make sense as White and the Diamonds might have been the only Diamonds to have extremely simple instructions. To be better. To make everything better. White took this as her only identity but rolled with the surface level definition. The ugly definition of kind voices with a smile regardless of emotions. Blue and Yellow took themselves as extensions of that even though they were likely the most mediative. Yellow keeping peace where she could through action and protection of the body. Blue for emotion and protection of feelings. While they abused Pink it's clear they did subconsciously value her. They knew how to make appearances but also somewhat understood the Id of Pink, but weren't immune to White's control so folded under her and only secretly helped. Pink was only told she made everything worse by White, but it was clear she had a purpose of appeasing needs. With complete understanding of her actual purpose, the Diamonds would be a literal utopia for Gem and Organic life alike. Yes, Gems absorb life but also Steven and Rose could heal damage from injectors of Rose's own essence. So I think the point was for gems to Grow here and there, not entirely wipe planets, and then Pink would be damage control for the organic scars. I think the massive Kindegartens were maybe more of the problem than the creation of a Gem or two here and there. Just like real life, mass production is the stuff that really makes an environment suffer more than a log cabin made in one year until the trees regrow. Gems have long Incubation periods, but with a bit of Pink tears and possibly other Diamonds pitching in, they could heal smaller scale holes. Or the holes would be more of a den for animals later?

It's true that White and the other Diamonds aren't there yet by the time the show has ended, but she's definitely on a trajectory towards further improvement. I get the impression that IF a potential revival decides to go the "married with kids" route for Steven, the Diamonds may end up having their rough edges mellowed out by the role of "cool jetsetting aunties"
Ngl, White's power to mind control others reminds me a lot of the power of the Founding Titan from AOT. Makes sense since she's basically a weird mix of Ymir and King Fritz.

I just rewatched the entire series of Steven Universe last month and really enjoyed it.
Hm, I see, i appreciate this Video, very good job, it’s a shame this idea couldn’t be fully realized and explored, but i hope too there’s a chance for Second Try.

35:35 white is a conservative grandmother who controlled her daughter's life until the daughter ran away from her family, had a child who resemble her and in the act of childbirth ended up dead, the child is the age that the mother was when the mother ran away from the family and now the child goes to the family and then the family acts as if no time has passed when the kid confronts the grandmother, the grandmother treats the kid as the mother. When the kid proves that they are not the same as the mom the grandmother has a change of actions and emotions. That is what I see the white role to be.
Really enjoying these character analysis videos. They are very well done and I hope to see more. Also, I'd like to see a new video focused on fusions... between Steven and characters from other media. If Steven Universe ever did a proper crossover, then you know a unique new fusion would be part of the equation. What would they look like? What would they be called? And, most importantly, what unique abilities would they possess?

When the ending first aired it left a bitter taste in my mouth, and for a while I thought it made me no longer like SU. But recently I decided to watch it through again from the start now that I've learned more about the production (mainly the ending getting suddenly limited to 6 episodes). I also convinced my friend to watch it with me as he had skipped it due to being in that highschool "I'm too old for cartoons" phase (he loves cartoons btw 😂). Well my partner, who for years said she didn't wanna watch SU, ended up joining us. Now she's hooked and can't wait for watch night! She knows nothing about the show (no spoilers from us!), I watched every episode when it was airing, and my friend knows major plot points (including Rose's truth). It's very intertaining having so many different viewpoints while watching it again 😊

Considering what we know from future that stevens gem gives him what he needs for the situation, became quarts like to fight jasper, speed to help and save everyone, and the loud yelling to be heard when stressed out. A lot of his memories are when he's usually mostly alone like in the palise or away from just about everyone when locked up. I think it's interesting how the memories are being given by pink steven/ his gem to help him in the situation figure out what's really going on.
White vs Pink is Collective vs Individual, and the answer to both of these battles is that you need both. A true collective can only function at it's best when individuals are embraced and allowed to exist. Beach City and Little Homeworld are perfect examples of that very concept. Your breakdown on how White sees gems as an extention of herself works with this perfectly
