One of my favorite movies when I was young(er) was Viva Las Vegas, with Ann-Margret and Elvis in the lead. Great restoration as usual, and what a great runner it turned out to be! Runs better than some modern units.
Oh yea - Ann Margret, quite the movie actress of the 70's, many topless moments as well. That engine is a keeper, noisy grinder. I have a few like that, just have to love them. Good video - thanks.
The good old days... make it to break in TWENTY years (not two like today). Nice runner. I have a couple GP30s that have similar drives (maybe skewed armatures too...). Nice refurb!
What a beautiful piece! I'm partial to EMD diesels, but I have a soft spot for those Alco RS1-RD4. Funny when you said "it's gotta be specific" And ironically you're working on a "Be Specific, Ship Union Pacific" loco! 😂 Great video!
43:41 "It's a beautiful thing..." Wild Horses Them Loco's run tight when you git'er done right! Smooth RSD-4... (Almost runs like a smooth Atlas/Kato, eh?) Awesome job, Ron. (Nice dawg, too.) John BC CA (nee WI/MN)
Wow what a beautiful engine and an awesome runner. Nice repair Ron. Ann Margaret was not only gorgeous, she could act, sing, and dance. Very popular in the days of Elvis, Dean Martin etc 33% right here.
Great video Ron. Believe it or not, the history lesson was very interesting to me. I had no idea about any of the RS locomotives from Alco. I was always confused on all of the different model types. Now I have a better understanding of them. Great job!! Today’s Classic Model is none other than the beautiful Ann Margaret!!
Love ALCO locomotives! Def RSD 3 prob the RSD was designator for the 6 wheeled trucks. The Nscale loco that just arrived from you is RSD-15. Yellow Armor Sand and Harbor Mist Gray. Is it Elizabeth Montgomery. Ooops oh well. Great work Ron!
What a fantastic locomotive! And what a great job whooping her into shape! And Ron, you my friend, have the patience of Job…which is a really good thing!
Ron, remember if these trains were working on a railroad they would not have perfectly lined up handrails etc.. Don't be too hard on yourself.. I do it often, trying to make things look right.. I would love to know where you got the end boards with the handrails... I need some for my RS-3. You might need to adjust the tree at the curve leading into the straight as the loco and wagons all touched it and turned it as they went past @49:23 onwards... You did a fantastic job on this loco Ron.
That loco was built to last. I could see that truck hopping when you first put it on the track and gave it power. You did it justice though even if it was some trial an error fitting up the drive gear. Runs smooth now. Yes, Ann Margaret, she made movies with Elvis Presley, she traveled to Vietnam many times with Bob Hope to entertain the troops, she starred in the movie "Tommy" (The Who), Bye Bye Birdie and many more. Ann Margaret was big time from the 60's into the 90's. Check out the movie "Viva Las Vegas" with Elvis.
18:45 pilot and foot boards. 40:32 Hobbytown drives are never quiet. One thing that also differentiates ALCO's is the stack placement. They switched from air-cooled turbochargers to water-cooled turbochargers. Something about fires 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥.
Well Ron, that was a journey and a half, and I enjoyed it. The old Hobbytown locomotives had some interesting engineering, but they were built to last. Emagine having to put these together from scratch with a set of kit plans not to mention the painting. Great job putting the finishing touches on and ending up with a fantastic runner. Ann Margret did one of her movies with Elvis and spent allot of time on the Johnny Carson show plus she is 83 now and 10 years older than me, lol. By the way I just noticed my call sign in the member credits so thanks, Jersey Bill.
Those Hobbytowns run like a clock, but do require fine tuning. The flywheel is sweet! Now you can do that all over with the second batch of hobbytowns you just got!
RS3 battery box on the walkway on the short hood end, RS2 batteries under cab floor. RS 8 wheels 8 drive. RSC 12 wheels 8 drive. RSD 12 wheels 12 drive. RS1 inline 6 turbo 1000hp, RS2 V12 turbo 1500 hp, RS3 V12 turbo 1600hp. Hobbytown kits run awesome. I like to find them that have all metal gears. The Japanese open motor runs nice, just as good as a can motor.
That's the jeepers of creepers right there. Another informative and excellent video Ron. There are other modelers with these repair videos, but you're head and shoulders above them all.
The best resource for identifying older locomotives is Jerry A. Pinkepank's Diesel Spotter's Guides. Out of print but used copies are readily available.
hobbytown was quite the quality drive back in the day.. and look how well this one held up over the decades. A modern can motor and DCC with the classic Hobbytown mechanicals would be up to date today. Nice rebuild Ron, REALLY enjoyed watching this episode, especially with the RS history coverage.
I enjoyed this video. Ann Margret's breakout movie roll was in "Bye Bye Birdie," a parody of Elvis Presley's first appearance on Ed Sullivan. The movie was based on an earlier Broadway musical of the same name. Back in the day she was hot stuff and even the characters in the series Mad Men spoke of her with awe. Cheers from Wisconsin!
Fun Fact Ron: There a 1of1 RSD17. CPR Empress of Agincourt. CP ran it and modified it over the years. It lives inside at the Elgin County Railway Museum in St Thomas Ontario. 30 minutes from me.🚂🇨🇦🇺🇲🙋
Hi Ron, i believe an easy way to tell them apart is the Rs2 has the fuel tank under the cab and the filler on the bottom of the cab, rs3 has the fuel tank under the long hood and fuel filler there as well, the reason rs1 was made for so long is due to the unreliability of the other models engine's. I love the Hobbytown locomotives, i have an rs3 and an E7. I'll give you a modellers award for enthusiasm, grit and determination and pure entertainment.😁
Plenty of good engineering there with performance to match. (Tip. Keep your compass away from the re-magger when pressing the button or you could mess up IT'S magnetism or reverse the poles!) Speaking of magnets, i put one in my tray when disassembling a model. That way, when i knock the lot onto the floor, 95% of the, usually small, parts are still in one place, on the magnet! 🤠
Hi Ron. Found your channel a couple weeks ago and have been watching a lot of your videos.....older ones and newer ones. Like your straight forward approach. Learned some things too. I got several American Flyer engines I'm getting into to get them back to there former running condition. I have noticed you order parts on occasion and am wondering if you could tell me where I might get parts for these old Flyers if I need them. Really like your vids! Thanks in advance!
45:40 The front railing is not in straight? Can see part of the U slot for the screw at the top so it is not fully in. Good job everywhere else though. And I too break hand railings regularly 😞
I was thinking the other day about the issue of the metal brush wheel strands flying out. I wonder if you soldered the strands to the hub or epoxied them to the hub if it would last longer. It is possibly a terrible idea too. Haha. Thanks for the videos. Cheers!

Picked up a hobby town f unit at a show in November for $5. Repaired broken wire cleaned ran great. Nice work again ron
That is awesome!
That is a REALLY good runner! Well done Ron!

lota work but well worth it. Nicely done Ron
Thanks Joe
did that come as a kit ? someone did some great work love all the brass gears

I think my custom length screw I made is too long now that I look at it. You got a good eye!!
That was a lot of “put together and take apart” action. But as usual, you got it to run nicely. Nice work.
Took longer than I expected because of my silly mistakes

The U-joints between trucks should have the slots align - right now you have them 90 degrees apart.
I can take em apart but the difficulty is in getting everything back together ! Ron, Ann Margaret was Elvis’ girlfriend…
