Hey Ron, it's Mark here. So, you are about to find out, I specialize in brass train repairs. I have at least 60 of those. Brass can be troublesome at times. When you can sometime check your gear lash, sounds tite. Gear boxes and the gear tower, and check the lash in the gear box and the tower, while those 2 screws are tightened down, you may need to install a couple thousandth shim between the tower and the truck gear box, to provide some back lash, if needed. I love Linda Carter, oh my.
Yes sir, what I was thinkn too. A little like a diff in a rear axle . There HAS to be a certain amount of play between the gears. That loco shouldnt be that noisey. I am sure it would start off better, too.
I agree. I have 3Tenshodo GP9's with the same drive. None of them sound like yours. Definitely shim the drive tower as Mark Irwin suggests, and check the alignment between upper and lower gears. I like Linda Carter too.🙂
@@classicmodeltrains yep, it's what I would have to do, K&S sells bagged square sheets of brass, from 1k to 5k thick, in a assortment pack. Or if you have something the equivalent laying around, should do the trick. Heck even a tin can siding would work, adjust thickness until a little backlash is there. Use caution when making the shims, not to slice your fingers, thou.
@@classicmodeltrains Hey Ron. You can get different thicknesses of brass sheeting from a hobby store. Id try a real thin piece, say ..5mm thick.or even slightly thinner, & try that.
My condloences for your loss and congratulations for giving Dumspter a new forever home. God bles you. I take in abandoned and abused cats and give them homes, good food and a lot of love.
Love that freakin’ cat bro! Great work you do. Some of the most enjoyable videos about model trains…because you don’t take yourself too seriously. Cheers!!
I have one brass piece in my roster.GP38. I had always seen the ads in the back couple pages of Model Railroader magazine as a kid. Thought who buys that. My brass loco I consider a level achieved. Good show Ron🚂🇨🇦🇺🇲🙋
My condolences. I lost my 6-year-old Pitbull to a stroke on Thanksgiving . So glad you gave a deserving cat a good home and I hope you get a new dog I adopted a beautiful 7 year old black Labrador retriever who had been at the pound for a long time and now he has a forever home.
Another great video. Always enjoyed watching 'Wonder Woman'. Still get in trouble with the wife when I stop to watch it. LOL Hope Dumpster did ok over the 4th. My dog and one of the cats both dislike the noise. Thanks for sharing.
Broadway Limited makes a magnificent DCC GP20 , and it looks like the plastic housing from a ball point would work for the drive shaft. Lynda Carter ❤️❤️❤️ so sorry about losing your pup 😭 that’s a huge deal in our home. Beautiful puppers! I have no desire to own brass locomotives, the one i have doesn’t run well and I’ve messed with it a ton!

Quite the growler! Going to name that one "Grumpy". Got my 1st Tenshodos during Covid. F7A and B so no shorting concerns, but a broken weld. I will most likely replace the motors with cans to drop current pull. Fickle but sweet units. Tenshodo may have been Caddy's back in the day when compared to many other options for the time. Still good runners and haulers. And now I can say, I have brass engines! lol. Have a crack at some ALCO brass one of these days. Good prices at shows but re-motoring will be needed as the old box frame motor looks like it could drive a tank! That or put a fusion core in there! As usual, great vid. I wanted one of those when they came out. But my allowance was 10 cents a week at the time, so I settled for a Hustler. Later in college I got into N and Nn3, and am still happily in them, despite the early Bachmann engines that came with smoke units. You turned them on, they smoked, caught fire, and melted. Persistence and longevity pay off eventually. W Alsdorf 😊
Hi Ron, Nice restore, even though the locomotive sounds like it's possessed by a demon from Hell. LoL. Just love it when a locomotive shorts out; the thanks one gets for bringing it back from the brink of the junk drawer. Sorry for the loss of your dog, but delighted to see Dumpster! I got one of those Japanese brass engines too. I got into it, but not as deep as you went. I might have to revisit it and see if I can get it to run a little better. Sorry to hear about your dog. I’m very, very sorry for Boogie my friend… but, on the other hand, I wish you and the Little Lady happy times with Dumpster! She’s lovely! Another great job Ron (your patience is remarkable!)! Please, let me ask you a huge favor: try to change - and film - the magnets on the Tenshodo motor, showing us the electric measures (thanks, by the way: I really appreciated it!) before and after the change. I suspect her performance is gonna improve, but I’d like to confirm it. Worst case scenario (my suspicion is not confirmed) you’re gonna have another video to show us your great work! Hello Regis, Thank you. Sounds like I need to fine some shims for that gear tower. Possible too close of tolerances making them gears howl. Yes a before/after video of them fancy super magnets is a good idea.
Let me start by saying I'm sorry about the loss of Ewhgy, (don't know if that is spelled correctly). I do wish dogs had a life as long as ours. As for brass locomotives, I have fixed many and always find electrical issues, not drive problems. You found both! I'll bet that had a spring coupler from the motor to the drive tower but still ran like crap. I would take the worm gears out of the one truck and see how it runs but sometimes you do everything right and end up with a hot mess. Great video blemishes and all, Jersey Bill
Ron thanks for the shout out good to see you got it going I got that thing at an antique store call the Catawba River antiques I would go in there and the guy had a whole wall of just ho stuff and I was kind of into ho at the time I paid less than $20 for it and then it sit in the basement for 10 years so it's good to see it works by the way sorry for your loss pets are just like family.
The small amount of binding and gallop it still has, maybe the vacuum hose. It looked pretty stiff and it was coiled up. It will want to keep that shape and the trucks need to bend it slightly on the curves. Tygon tubing may have been a better choice. Good video! Thanks!
It's a nice video on this repair. As far as the quality of the Tenshodo, they were considered the low end of the brass models due the detail of their pieces. The only thing that puzzles me is that Tenshodo picked the PRR paint for this model. This model would match up with a Southern Pacific or Santa Fe model more than the PRR. My only guess for the paint job was to sell more locomotives. I would like to note that the competitor of the PRR (NYC) had these locomotives like this model without dynamic brakes. Some of these locomotives made through the Penn Central all the way up to Conrail. So, Tenshodo could have painted this in NYC and just ignored the Dynamic Brakes issue as a close enough model for those who were willing to look past this detail.
Thanks. A lot of modelers are unaware of the specific options each RR would have on their loco's. That ability is way above my ability to retain and use that specific information when needed. :-)
I have a few Olympic Express brass F-7 powered chassis that ae essentially a Globe drive clone. The only way to get these to run well is to replace the motor with a precision NWSL or A-line motor with flywheel using silicone sealant. One drive shaft has to be cut and lengthened with brass tubing and super glue. I then attach Miniatronics 2 pin connectors with the matching ends run through the FF-7 porthole windows in the rear so that both are electrically connected. I now have power pickup spread over an A-B set which does not stall on frogs or crossings. You might try this with a pair of Tenshodo diesels.
Hi Ron. I particularly don't like brass machines and every time I've done maintenance on brass machines, I've had several problems with short circuits, including during the installation of a sound, light and motion decoder that burned down because of this and I had a big loss financial. If you allow me an opinion, instead of the flexible tube from the motor to the gear box in your GP20, I would adapt an Athearn or Atlas cardan, which I think would reduce the noise and vibrations. Congratulations, great video.
There is so little room between the motor armature shaft and the input shaft of the gear tower. I'm sure it can be done. I just dont want to tackle it. The majority of that noise is from the straight cut gears on the gear tower.
I have a brass 2-8-0 made by Akane I think its called for under 200 And its painted, Brass does look nice and can be expensive but you can get lucky to get one also nice restoration
Hey Ron. Sad about your "friend" I hopn that Dumpster isnt named for all of the "dumping" done inside the house. I got my lab 2 years ago as a pup, & it still "dumping" inside occasionally. Maybe the name is indicative of the sizing, lol.
Hello Michael, No.. Dumpster seems to be house broken. No accidents yet. I've had that name saved up for 10 years now waiting for a new dog to give it too.
I inherited a couple of brass locomotives. The only thing they have going for them is the detail. Alot more attention to detail on the locomotives and as you said they sell some locomotives the plastic companies won't make. The cons are the motors are always junk. I have one that never ran when it was new. The other one I had to take into a repair shop and get it running again. The other con is all that money never buys DCC they are DC only. Which is where the senior citizens you mentioned come in, because they want to run DC only which boring.
Nice cleanup Ron. I had high hopes you'd quiet it down a bit. As much as I admire the engineering it certainly is loud. I don't know. Maybe that's how Japan's real trains sound if they're going to boast "real train sound". 😄
Hey Ron, Are the wheel flanges hitting the ties when running ? EMD GP-20 Pennsylvania I had the same sound when riding large flanges on a Code 55 track. But, being the professional that you are, I could be wrong! Freddie P
Thank you Charles. I like naming dogs differently than common dog names. Ive ben saving the "Dumpster" name for over 10 years until I got another dog. She was hiding behind the couch on the 4th and 5th
I so, so don't understand you HO guys??? But great show as usual Ron, though I don't understand why such large handed individuals always pick the smallest items to work on? Yeah I understand that you can basically have 4-5X the collection and or layout sizes due to the smaller scale and less $ usually...... but Damn, if you need to use a microscope and tweezers to do a simple repair or installation on these tiny things.......? And these are giant compared to N or Z scales! IDK Ron? But you have G size digits OO O or even 027....but you always fall back into them tiny HO's with their extremely difficult and strange drive designs that are usually equipped with plastic pieces or gears..... After all your hard work during the surgeries you perform on these strange locomotives, knowing you saw plastic gears inside most all these trains...... How does on sleep at night at all? Knowing that you have plastic parts driving your engines? LMAO! Otherwise I'm just busting some HO balls here lol. Love your videos Ron and I can overlook the fact that you love HO, and use your information towards my own gauge scale, which if it's not obvious? 0, 00 or 027 the older the better, so postwar and backwards. We'll see ya next time Sir and stay cool out there my man, along with a Happy 4th of July to you all as well in RUclips land.
I like all scales Jim. ALTHOUGH........I do kinda avoid N repairs. They are just a bit to small for me. Love me some big O stuff. Got a few repairs on them coming.
If i found a brass similar to that one but the body was badly smashed up with the motor still in good condition ill just scrap it and just use the motor.
Thanks!, Sorry to hear about Oggy 🙁
Thank you very much Gabe!

Right on!
Life Like used to make a GP-20 in N scale, it is my favorite N scale diesel (I have 8 of them). I think Atlas bought all the tooling for them.
Thanks for the info!!
I have a brass 2-8-0 made by Akane I think its called for under 200 And its painted, Brass does look nice and can be expensive but you can get lucky to get one also nice restoration
Thanks

:-)
Nice job, I also use 2/56 screws when i do rebuilds, I think 2/56 screws on all model trains should be standard.
Agree!
@@classicmodeltrains As always thank you very much for your reply.
Those brass models back in the 60's and 70's retailed for $50.00 back in the day.
They were awfully proud of them for sure
I inherited a couple of brass locomotives. The only thing they have going for them is the detail. Alot more attention to detail on the locomotives and as you said they sell some locomotives the plastic companies won't make. The cons are the motors are always junk. I have one that never ran when it was new. The other one I had to take into a repair shop and get it running again. The other con is all that money never buys DCC they are DC only. Which is where the senior citizens you mentioned come in, because they want to run DC only which boring.
I have not hear one Feller mention they run good.
Pretty fancy! Looks like they ripped off the hobbytown drive actually. Another excellent video!
I have a hobby town loco kit sitting in a box. I should take a look and see
Nice cleanup Ron. I had high hopes you'd quiet it down a bit.
As much as I admire the engineering it certainly is loud. I don't know. Maybe that's how Japan's real trains sound if they're going to boast "real train sound". 😄
I thought it would quiet down as well with a good clean and lube
Geez that has binds even after
:-)
That thing is noisier then my A.C. Gilbert Alco DL-600. I'm surprised that it didn't scare the new puppy.
It was louder than expected
It’s Linda Carter
Yup
Your rubber tubing will slide easily with soapy water then when it's dry your good to go
Good tip!! Thanks
Lynda Carter! HUBBA HUBBA
Yup!!
The lovely and wonderful Original Wonder Woman also Mrs America Linda Carter
She was Miss America as well? Did not know that
@@classicmodeltrains sorry I was incorrect, she was Miss USA in 1972 and went off to Miss Universe in 1973 and took 12th place
Linda Carter is like a 1951 Lionel Hudson 4-6-4, she only gets better with age.
She is aging amazingly well
Linda Carter, and once by Emily Deschanel, I think.

MacGyver would have used waterproof matches, bondo, a condom and a hammer!!! 🤣🤣🤣
condom? who carries those around anymore ;-)
@@classicmodeltrains LMAO!!!! 🤣
Hey Ron, Are the wheel flanges hitting the ties when running ? EMD GP-20 Pennsylvania
I had the same sound when riding large flanges on a Code 55 track. But, being the professional that you are, I could be wrong!
Freddie P
Im running code 100 track. Keeping in nice and tall for all the old stuff I drag up :-)

Sorry to hear about the loss of your dog.
Is Dumpster’s name a clue as to where you got her from?
Just kidding. I hope she came through the fourth ok.
Thank you Charles. I like naming dogs differently than common dog names. Ive ben saving the "Dumpster" name for over 10 years until I got another dog. She was hiding behind the couch on the 4th and 5th

We use car parts, we currently have Piston, Torque Radiator and Valves.
Camshaft passed two years ago.

Looks right to me :-)

I never really understood what the draw was with brass
I agree with you
Who Is Linda Carter Wonder Woman.
yup!
I’m thinking a tinker toy
:-)
If i found a brass similar to that one but the body was badly smashed up with the motor still in good condition ill just scrap it and just use the motor.
its got a nice motor for sure

Good work, but my God does that sound horrible. It sounds like it is riding on the ties.
its a loud one
You might have a dead coil in the motor maybe? look for open circuit.
Why do you say that?
@@classicmodeltrains the way it stops turning.
