He got the history wrong. The Civil War that resulted in the forming of the Triads was between Ming Dynasty and various rebels like Jianzhou Manchu 1583-1683. The fight between the Communists and Nationalists was the final stage of another 100 years civil war, began at 1851 when Taiping Christian declared war against the Manchu, to 1950 when the Communist defeated the Muslim Ma Clan.

While I’m not sure if the festival in the video is strictly local to coastal Fujian or Taiwan, elements of this folk religion can also be found in Teochew, Hakka, Taishan, and the Chinese diaspora. It blends aspects of Daoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism, making it a broader tradition than just one regional practice. I would also add that while distinct, even Japanese Shinto, Korean Shamanism, Vietnamese Folk Religion has some cross-cultural influence with Chinese religious practices that are not unlike the festivals displayed in the video.

He got the history wrong. The Civil War that resulted in the forming of the Triads was between Ming Dynasty and various rebels like Jianzhou Manchu 1583-1683.
The fight between the Communists and Nationalists was the final stage of another 100 years civil war, began at 1851 when Taiping Christian declared war against the Manchu, to 1950 when the Communist defeated the Muslim Ma Clan.

@ChinaMac, from an ABC to another ABC, those festivals actually aren't "Buddhist," rather they're Chinese/Taiwanese Folk Religion festivals, which generally combines Daoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism together.

This is strictly a Fujian/Taiwan thing. Mainly coastal FJ. It's unheard of in other parts of China. Very local, superstitious, folklore.
@baraclude I understand your point, but Chinese Folk Religion is quite widespread and includes similar superstitions and folklore practiced across various Han Chinese groups, not just in Fujian or Taiwan. While I’m not sure if the festival in the video is strictly local to coastal Fujian or Taiwan, elements of this folk religion can also be found in Teochew, Hakka, Taishan, and the Chinese diaspora. It blends aspects of Daoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism, making it a broader tradition than just one regional practice.
I would also add that while distinct, even Japanese Shinto, Korean Shamanism, Vietnamese Folk Religion has some cross-cultural influence with Chinese religious practices that are not unlike the festivals displayed in the video.
