I got a 'discounted' quote for 3 fitted wardrobes that was over £12k and then I thought of doing this... turns out I wasnt the first :') There quite a few of these Pax Hacks out there, but this has been the most helpful. Great job! Will definitely check your other vids. Thanks!
Did a similar thing with my kitchen. Had 2 second hand ones and painted to match even though they are solid wood. When designing, any small space was potential another wine rack - I have my priorities. Only actually ended up with one that hold 6 bottles.
Looks great. I'd be using that bottom part of your shelves on the side too put the laundry hamper. Might need to adjust the height of shelves, but on camera it looks narrow enough to fit. That would then free up space in the middle wardrobe
Wee tip for any one doing the base If you level them in and add packers where needed this will help keep your units square and level so when you install your doors they will line up perfectly 👌
Haha “experts” - maybe one day 😉 And thank you - the lighting really is nice and cosy, we are getting a couple of lamps in as well which I think will really elevate the room!
Firstly, I’d be adding a tiny handle to that bottom bit where the floating shelves are. Would make for an awesome hidey hole! Can’t think of what I’d put in there but it’s still fun to know there’s a secret spot for treasures. Secondly, if you leave the top as is you can store things above the wardrobe. Out of season coats or bedding. Nothing too heavy, but basic things will be fine. I recently bought some attractive (and inexpensive) fabric covered under bed boxes on Amazon and they’d fit perfect up there.
oooooo that’s a great shout! Love a hidey hole. We’ve currently let it as it is for now and has been great for storing our iron board on top- you can hardly see it ☺️
We are in a similar situation size wise, we have 233cm head height but stead of getting the smaller frames and building a base we are going to cut the plinth section off the bottom of the frame to have seamless floor to ceiling wardrobes
We’ve been sneaking a peak on you’re IG stories and really love this how-to. Simple but highly effective. They look great and your use of IKEA Pax has me sold for our dressing room
Nice video! Just got some pax wardrobe with sliding doors, debating to put on frame now haha! Yours looks Great! Also good idea with the shelves on left we have same space so thanks for the ideas!
@@FeedbyAutumn we are going to 'cap our gap' above the wardrobes and try finishing it with coving, if we can find some that isnt an arm and leg that is!
Well done you two… wardrobes looking great as does raising the floor idea! You make it look so easy, so I’ll just have to have a go at this now when I finally get my PAX wardrobes 😎
you guys did such an amazing job and the wardrobes came out splendidly!! i love the colour you chose and how well it works with the black accents around the room. i've made a note of it so i can use it in my new place 🤗🤗
Hi! I’m super keen to paint my PAX wardrobe! What kind of paint did you use? Water based / oil based? I have the zinnser product but I’m unsure if I can use the water based paints we already have!
They look amazing! Not that I’m surprised the stuff you’ve been doing in the house is so cool. I’ve got Pax wardrobes too and never thought to build a base to make them look more built in. I *need* to try this! I look forward to your videos each week ✨❤️🤘🏻
Did you secure the wardrobes to the base? Putting the PAX on a base in our mudroom and wondered if that's a necessary step. I will secure it to the wall but not sure if it needs securing to the base as well. Thanks!
No we didn’t secure to base - I guess the base is just any other flooring for a wardrobe just slightly taller so no need ☺️ I think the most important bit to hold it all together is the backboard. Good luck!
Great video!! Just what I needed. Subscribed as well. Can you tell me if I can do this on top of carpet or would I need to pull my carpet up in that area?
These look good, but why leave the top exposed? That makes it look way less "built in". In reality, you should have put something around the whole thing, including the top.
Great video, we are half way through doing exactly the same, we've bought all of our wardrobes off of FB market place, we've even cut one 50cm wardrobe down to fit under our slopping ceiling, (cutting a triangle off the top of a door to make fit,) our doors are a mix of oak veneer and gloss/plastic coated, so not matching in colour or finish, all are flat i.e not shaker style like yours, so my plan now is to glue and brad nail some 2-3" 6mm MDF strips to each door to make them shaker style, and paint them (if i can remove the plastic coating that is, tested them with rustoluem cupboard paint and it just rubs off, any ideas?) otherwise i'm thinking about glueing some wallpaper in between each shaker gap to cover the bright white gloss. We also have 1 mirror door, i'm hoping to make this shaker style too, by just glueing the strips to make them all look cohesive. Best laid plans and all that!
Hi, nicely done! I have to put some wardrobes together and I was wondering how much space did you leave between the wardrobe and the window wall. We are going to have drawers so we need the door to open at least 90 degrees but I am worried I am not going to be able to do so if I put the wardrobe against the side wall.
Thanks! I think you need about 80mm as the door needs to open further than 90 degrees and you have to take into account the handle. We learnt the hard way that we were not able to have drawers as we had it too close to a radiator. Good luck!
@@FeedbyAutumn Thank you for your response. How do you feel with this ceiling height? Does it feel normal? We are getting our loft conversion done too and our ceiling height is exactly same as yours. Also how is the temperature in the loft bedroom during winters? Do you need lot of heating or is it better than downstairs? I heard it could get really hot during summers but not sure how winters feel? Thanks again for your video and response!
2.2m is fine - doesn’t feel small at all. Tom is also 6”4 and says it doesn’t feel small. It is definitely the most insulated place in the house which is nice - when the heating goes off it remains warm up there. If installed properly insulation should keep it warm in the winters and cool in the summers - nothing to worry about I would say. It may be slightly hotter than the rest of the house as hot air rises. Good luck!
for the base: did you plane the timber board so that all of the edges were flat or did you use it exactly as it comes from a hardware store? i don't have a table saw so I don't really have a way to plane it and I'm wondering if it'll be off balance if I don't plane it.
Hi, great job! I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. Did you screw the wardrobes to the base? Did you also screw back of the wardrobes to the wall? I'm thinking of doing this and was unsure if this needs to be done to keep them sturdy and not wobbly. Thanks
Thanks! No the wardrobe just sat on the platform - just like it would on the floor. We didn’t screw to the wall but no harm on doing this. The wardrobe is stable when you put the backboard on. We have had no issue with it - it’s been very sturdy
Fantastic vid! Random question, why did you use valspar colour match? Was it purely for price? Or is theres better for painting ikea pax wardrobes? Im looking for advice thanks
We didn’t buy any additional materials - just left overs. Regardless this is a much cheaper option than getting custom made wardrobes from a carpenter ☺️
You can find a FULL cost breakdown of our finished loft conversion in our latest video: ruclips.net/video/IWi0uuHCL8I/видео.html
Please could you share derails of the specific Valspar you used. Thanks 😊
This is the first 'How To' I've seen that goes into enough detail. THANK YOU

Looks great. I'd be using that bottom part of your shelves on the side too put the laundry hamper. Might need to adjust the height of shelves, but on camera it looks narrow enough to fit. That would then free up space in the middle wardrobe
Everything turned out great. Very nice. You can add extra rod for tops and pants/shirts.
Great work - I like how you used valspar to match to a farrow and ball colour. I'm pretty sure the difference isn't even noticeable
Thanks Afnan - we honestly could not tell the difference!

2.2 to 2.3m. We had to lower our ceilings though ☺️

Hi!! Did you drill the base into the sub floor directly? I am trying to think of the best way to manage this if there is already flooring. Thanks!
We did as we didn’t have carpet there already. I don’t think it’s necessary if you have created a sturdy base
for the base: did you plane the timber board so that all of the edges were flat or did you use it exactly as it comes from a hardware store? i don't have a table saw so I don't really have a way to plane it and I'm wondering if it'll be off balance if I don't plane it.

Fantastic vid! Random question, why did you use valspar colour match? Was it purely for price? Or is theres better for painting ikea pax wardrobes? Im looking for advice thanks
It was purely on price. The Zinser Primer we used is an absolute essential for painting the pax wardrobes though.
you should put led light strips across the bottom of the wardrobes
Could you list what we need to buy?
Did you fix the wardrobe to the back wall or are they free standing?
Awesome video, but no drawers? Where does Tom put his socks and undies? 🤷🏾♂️
We've got 2 chests of drawers on the wall opposite for socks, undies and folded clothes ☺
Did you extend the base wall to wall? Is the base just under the Pax or under the floating shelves too?
We extended it wall to wall. This is to attach the skirting board underneath
Did you secure it to the wall?
Is this too heavy for 2nd floor bedroom? Thanks
This is in our loft - so I don’t think so! Just the weight of a normal cupboard with a couple of pieces of extra wood
Hi what where the sizes of the room please
Definitely needs top gap enclosed to finish the look
Why not have directly on floor?
Does anyone know what wood/ material IKEA furniture is made of?
It’s made of wood chips with a laminate coat. The primer we used is brilliant to use on ikea furniture - it stops the paint chipping!
@@FeedbyAutumn Thankyou.

where are your handles from?
They are the BORGHAMN from IKEA 😊
You definitely need to fill in the gap at the top. It’s just gonna be a dust collector up there and it makes it look not built-in.
I think I don't like them...Great video Really enjoyed watching Thank you..
it looks like it cost more to buy sub materials than the Ikea Wardorbe itself
