When Alicent first told Otto what the king wanted he looked surprised like " Oh yeah? Is that what he really said?" Also when Otto repeated Viserys' last wishes, he added "son Aegon" in order to prevent confusion about which Aegon. Neither Alicent nor Otto believes the words coming outta their mouths.

Wealth & power is hard to enjoy when you are constantly fearing your own death.

Alicent really heard what she wanted to, because there’s no way Aegon II had any dream. The fact that they did all of this without even telling Rhaenyra that her father had passed, they’re vile for that and I can’t wait to see people (hopefully) burn by Dragonfire because of it.
Rhaenys didn’t kill them all, but then she would have been known as the kinslayer forever.
That dragon said, “B¡¡¡¡¡+….ch!!!!” and I felt every bit of it. Rhaenys realized that alicenr and her daddy were about to do to Rhaenyra what those men did to her when it was her turn to be queen. She said not on my watch!
I mean, the REAL reason that Rhaenys didn't "dracarys" the Greens is because that would have ended the show - or at least the storyline that we all know is coming. But if I have to think of a pretend reason, then I think that Rhaenys wasn't yet sure whose side she wanted to be on. She didn't like the Greens, yet she also thinks that Rhaenyra & Daemon killed her son. By not killing the Greens, she will be able to use that as a bargaining chip later: "I could have killed you all, but I didn't, so now you need to do this thing for me..." You feel me?
I think Rhaenys is smart enough to know not to trust Greens will show her mercy when given the chance. I think at this point we're all thinking pretend reasons and apparently so is the showrunner.
So far she is one of the only truly honorable people in the story. When she had the chance to switch to the Greens and bethroth her granddaughters to Alicents boys while also getting Driftmark, she didn't do it. She kept her word to Rheanyra. From what we've seen I don't take her for a kinslayer, not her style.

The transition of power would have been much more complicated than I think people are realizing. It would have been civil war for sure. And then Old Town wouldn't just sit down and take it I dont think?
I can’t agree with that, the Greens were about to be kin slayers too, with way less justification m. On paper it’s a 2nd child usurping the king’s named heir after the death of the King. Through force that made other lords bend the knee and break their oaths to the Princess , and they already have a kill count. Killing them would have made team Black the only claimants left standing, they wouldn’t have to convince any of the lords because the choice was already made 20 years ago and this is just the follow through. Any challenge would be met with team Blacks dragons. Rhaenys showed mercy to Alicent and it was the biggest mistake of her life.
@@Cangeltibon That's not how politics in Westeros works because Aegons son and daughter was not in that pit, they would rally behind the eldest and raise him somewhere (They did it with Jaehaerys) then start plotting if Rhaenys took them out Rhaenyras rule would not have been stable. But I will end here because I read the histories and I don't want to spoil anything.

They lock a Targaryean Princess up, separate her from her dragon and imply things will absolutely stay that way unless she supports their coup and everyone acting surprised when Rhaenys was having none of it. The Hightowers got the ball rolling and Meleys bursting forth from the dragonpit just foreshadows all the turmoil that they have just unleashed on the kingdom.
Alicent REALLY pissed me off this episode acting surprised that their plan was to snuff Rhaenyra and her line. Ma'am, did you not tell Aegon in ep. 7 that if Rhae assumed the throne his life would be forfeit?! You mean to tell me she genuinely forgot what she has been drilling into her children's heads. I don't think it really mattered about who got to influence Aegon first before crowning him. He's been conditioned his whole to believe the other party has to die if one of them assumes the throne...

I was blown away by the details of the coronation. It felt like watching Nicholas II being crowned in an Orthodox ceremony with all the hollow pomp & circumstance of a rotting system. It's what I'd always envisioned from a GoT coronation. Tom Glynn-Carney was terrific in bringing out Aegon's emotions of fear, hesitation, pride & euphoria all at once. I'm glad they kept much despised Criston putting the Conqueror's crown on Aegon II's head. The Kingmaker is born! What the show's doing really well is the details, down to locking up servants. Usually the passionate debates, the sense of treachery & heartbreak are glossed over. We only see the regime change as a "fait accompli". This bring to life the mechanism that historically goes behind a coup, which I assume is as emotionally taxing for the people seizing power. That's why I like agonized & conflicted Alicent more than her steadfast source counterpart. She vacillates but her messianic fear for her children fates her to make a cursed gamble.
*Jokes aside, I only support my Green Lives Matter King for the extermination of Strong Boys cause I'm pro Valeryian blood supremacy.*

TLDR: Alicent is not a demon, rather she is a victim of her circumstance/upbringing and I don't think she is the main villain of the show (at least not yet).
Also, I *loved* your commentary at 17:40, because in my opinion this is precisely why Alicent is not a true villain. Villainous at times, for sure, but not a villain at her core (at least not yet). She is the victim of her upbringing and circumstance, much the same as any other character in the show (especially the female ones). We are constantly being shown that Alicent has conflicting emotions and views about every decision made around (or by) her, and at the end of the day she is just a people-pleaser. I personally empathize with her character. My parents were very kind and loving (so I can't relate to her being used by her father), but I relate heavily with the high expectations placed upon her as a child. I spent a lot of my life trying to live up to those expectations and it was detrimental for me in several ways. I don't think Alicent deserves some of the hate she gets, particularly when people try and paint her out as the "Holier-Than-Thou" type. My father was a preacher, and my mother a deaconess, and I *LOATHED* the idea that I had to carry myself a certain way all the time, BUT I tried my best to do so anyway. Not because I thought I was better than anyone, but simply because I loved my parents and wanted to make them happy (though they would be displeased with the spell-casting, rootworker I am today lol). All a young Alicent wanted to do was make her father happy, and that can be exceptionally hard when your bff is out breaking every rule you were taught to obey (something else I struggled with, especially during my high school years). Everyone loves throwing shade at Alicent but literally all of this could have been avoided if Rhaenyra simply renounced the throne...like...there was no rule that said she had to *accept* Viserys naming her heir (in fact, it's proven in GOT that one can denounce their appointment). Rhaenyra did all that talking about how she would rather fly around on dragons, and live her days as a knight, than be made a Queen like her mother. Yet the moment she's named heir she puts up ZERO fight. She has made soooo many terrible mistakes throughout the show and I think that's really the whole point. None of these characters are perfect, but the control each of them weilds (and over who/what) varies *greatly.* And it is this that creates all the stories and plots we see unfold on screen.

In OG prime GOT days E9 of each season was the most impactful of the whole season. Let’s be honest I have to admit I’m not is 100% sure E9 is the most important episode. The kings death was the most looming aspect of the season along with the inevitable war. But his death in episode eight and his final words that were a misunderstanding literally kick started all the events that happened afterwards. So it’s really in my opinion it seems episode eight is the most penultimate this time.
I would argue episode nine is still the most important still IF they showed the king slowly breathing a few more times at the initial start and then he died and then that one kid runs off and tells ppl the king is dead. imo
It’s really unclear as to me what episode is the most important at this point. Episode 9 and 8 are arguably both as equally important. imo but I’m kind of leaning more towards E8 seeming to be the most important episode and the likely new standard for the next 3 seasons of House of the dragon.

It actually makes sense that Lord Larys-who has a clubbed foot-would have a foot fetish. Alicent's feet are pretty and functional; something his are not. From a psychological perspective, this would create envy. Envy, by it's very nature, breeds desire. In Lord Larys' case, that desire manifests sexually and thus: a foot fetish.

The ep was great in what it was supposed to do, give the new monarch time to shine. The Aegon actor gave a top tier performance with his mood swings, establishing Aegon as far less one dimensional than Joffrey. Finally a proper crowning in Got-verse. A Green heavy political intrigue focused ep, with lots of great visuals & ethical quandary. Gonna be a Microwave Attention Span Challenge for the “only here for Daemon making g0ofy great value Patrick Bateman faces" crowd. Good. Rhaenys isn't aware of the book. She can't imagine the length of depravity & slow escalation both sides will go to, to kill her own kin at this point. That's Freefolk brain gigachad logic. Ned & Jaime coulda killed each other in the throne room & there's no War of Five Kings. But tbf I wouldn't have done the Rhaenys “good guy gets triumphal moment” pandering & kept it fully Green. I prefer moral dilemma of misguided mother Alicent over ruthless ambitious fire & blood council Alicent. The nuance of her has been lost on a viewership wanting her to fit the mold of a Disney evil queen. So this is a nudge in the right direction, that things are lot more grey from here. In general Aegon & Alicent have been more compelling than the gas light goodie two shoes way Rhaenyra's been portrayed so far. If ur angry at the smallfolk for not supporting Slay Queen...boy do I got bad news! This is the copium ep for Girlboss lovers.

Rhaenys hasn't read Fire & Blood to know of horrors to come. So her pre-emptively nuking half her own family would've been OP. Having said that, the Rhaenys bit was to give audience a 'send home happy' moment which wasn't necessary. The coronation was fantastic in itself. But gawd forbid the ''bad guys' are on top in simply 1 single episode. Those who thought lowborns of KL have any obligation to support Rhaenyra are in for big disappointments. Aegon claims his birthright from popular King Jaehaerys' Great Council stating king's firstborn male son is next king. Viserys himself won it over Rhaenys like that. Best part of this was the politics, less dragons the better. Despairing mom version of alicent does highlight her humanity more than the colder iteration of the actual green council. A well needed adjustment imo but also a continuation of her very humane Harrenhall or knife scene mistake. Her self-delusion about the prophecy goes along with her show character of "hiding behind the cloak of self-righteousness". They've constantly shown subtleties in her character which audience wilfully ignores since we're watching this as a team sport and gotta cheer team lovable manipulative dad. Her being more humanized shouldn't be an issue unless one wants the show to remain grotesquely tilted towards Black (Laenor death,etc)

I didn’t understand the part where Alicent and Otto were competing to find Aegon when they are on the same side. Can someone explain?
Essentially, Otto wanted to put Aegon under his thumb and all but order him to kill Rhaenyra, Daemon, and all of their children so that there would be no one else with a legitimate, strong (no pun intended) claim to the throne. Alicent wanted to keep Aegon out of Otto’s hands because she believed that killing Rhaenyra would do more harm to Aegon’s reign than good.
