- Have you been looking for a completely natural shampoo? It can be a frustrating and disappointing process! For years I settled for either store bought shampoos that I didn't love the ingredients, or homemade hair washes that didn't work well. Eventually I designed these shampoo bars, and have never looked back! They wash and condition hair gorgeously. You get that nice lather while you're washing your hair, and they smell so good!

🐝 TALLOW SHAMPOO BAR RECIPE DIRECTIONS
Ingredients:
10 oz. grass fed tallow
10 oz. refined coconut oil
10 oz. olive oil
6 oz. castor oil
13.68 oz. water
5.11 oz. lye
2 tbsp essential oil
Instructions:
Weigh tallow, coconut oil, olive oil, and castor oil, and put into a crockpot on high, or a pot on the stove on low heat.
Weigh the water in a heat safe container or sturdy plastic bucket, and weigh lye separately.
Once oils are melted, check the temperature. You want the oils to be 100 degrees F. Let oils cool if necessary.
Once oils are at 100 degrees F, take the lye and water outdoors. Wearing gloves and safety goggles, carefully and slowly pour the lye into the water. Stir gently.
Once the lye water has turned from cloudy to clear, leave it to cool for 10 minutes.
Carefully pour the lye water into the oil mixture.
Use an immersion blender to mix the shampoo bar mixture. After a few minutes, it will grow creamy, and start to thicken. Mix until it has reached “trace,” the light pudding consistency.
Add the essential oils and blend again to incorporate.
Pour shampoo bar mixture into molds, top with wax paper, and wrap molds in towels.
After 24 hours, remove soap from mold and slice into bars. Let cure in an area with good air flow for 4 weeks.

Have you tried shampoo bars? What did you think?
I love them. I would love to make some for Christmas presents to give others since lush is kind of expensive to buy for everyone, but I have no idea where to buy half of these and what is the difference between half of these oils. I think it might be expensive to make so... what is the cost to make these?
Btw this is a shampoo meaning for hair? Not body?
Yes, for hair 😃 But it also works great for a body bar!
I have the ingredients and where to buy them listed in the description box 😃
Hi Marisa, do you know a shop in the EU that makes your shampoo bar or a similar recipe? I would like to try it, but I cannot afford to order from the US. Lots of love from Hungary!
Hi, I recently bought your shampoo bar with the acv rinse and the conditioning bar. I am African American and have curly hair. Everything was amazing!!!! I detoxed my hair first with your detox recipe then I washed and conditioned. My hair loved it and it came out so soft and easy to manage. Thank you!!!!!!
I'm so glad! Thank you so much for sharing. I am always curious to know how they work for all the hair types, so this is so good to know!
I had a question does the shampoo bar suds up?

Your shampoo bars wash out the dirt and bathe in the love & care put into them. Super video 🙂
Thanks so much for leading me to tallow. It’s changed my body and beauty health so much. Be blessed!

Very cool, I’ll have to try it someday.
I stumbled upon one of your soap videos and haven’t stopped watching! I now have officially rendered tallow twice (your way) and am making so many wonderful products for me! So much fun! I loved meeting a local farming family for my suet! I’ll give these shampoos bars a try. Thank you for your informative videos and sharing your family with us!
Thank you so much! :)
Awww you're daughter is so cute!!
I think I'm going to buy from you site to try this shampoo bar! Not easy to make in my apartment! I'll buy for now. Thank you for your wonderful videos!
Thank you so much! Sounds good! 😃
Thank you so much for sharing your recipe. :)
Your daughter is just the cutest😁 so excited to try this from your shop! New sub!

I already tried your recepie for shampoo bars and rinse vinager and my hair is shiny and soft 😃thanks for your recepie.
Thanks for sharing!
just stumbled on your wonderful site. I've been buying shampoo bars for the last 10 years because I prefer them over the chemical-laden liquid shampoos. Went out and bought some grass-fed beef tallow to try to make my own now. Love your step by step instructions. Thank you so much for sharing and showing how easy it is to make these shampoo bar.
That's great, I'm so glad you're here! Let me know how the shampoo bars turn out 😊
Made this recipe and it volcanoed out if the mold. Have salvaged and placed in the fridge to hopefully save. Will see how we go.
Thanks for answering back, I already make my shampoo bars, I just have to wait to try them out.
Great, thanks for sharing!

So awesome! I’ve never used a shampoo bar!! 🤗💕
I love them! 😊
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I would like to know if it is possible, instead of using simple water in this soap recipe, to use flower infusions, for example, lavender, rosemary or even other medicinal infusions with other herbs? Thank you
This video is four years old. I just wanted you to know that I made these yesterday :) Thank you for the recipe.
Awesome! You're welcome!
You are truly awesome and amazing that is the fastest anybody has ever replied to me thank you an you take care and God bless you and your whole family
Thank you so much!

I love these 😍
Thanks! They’re one of my favorite things, too 😊
I certainly will give it a try. You really made it look easy. I like easy. X
Have fun!
It really was super easy. I was of course a little nervous working with the lie, but I followed her instructions and everything went well. I made a double batch so I will end up with 16 bars! So much fun to make our own products that we know will not harm us and hopefully will work really well. I’m looking forward to using them in 4 to 6 weeks!
Definitely #oshaaproved 😁 also, your end blooper is the best 😂
Yeah... not the best example of soap making safety! I plan to redo this video and show proper safety techniques 😃 I'm glad the blooper made you laugh! 😁
I like your new intro. It's pretty darn cool!
Thanks!! 😁😁
I’ve made this recipe and I really like it. I was wondering if Rosemary Essential Oil would be ok in this recipe?
Thank you! I found a great hobby.
You're welcome :)
Have you heard of mixing your lye solution with ACV instead of water and what are your thoughts on this? Would it make any difference to not needing to rinse with vinegar after washing?
Thanks
Hello, why does the bar have to sit for 4 weeks? Just wondering what would happen if you use right away? Great video, and thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much for sharing such wonderful content! I love your channel, it was an instant subscribe as soon as I watched the first video! Could I use beer in place of part of the water to make a beer shampoo? I've used a beer shampoo bar before and it was great for my hair!

I love your videos!😊 You have inspired me to make my own tallow shampoo bars and you have great instructions! Just wondering what kind of stick blender you use? Mine quit on the first batch and I thought I had ordered a good one.
Thank you so much! I've gone through two stick blenders, and I actually need to buy another one, haha! All that soap making! The first one was a cuisinart and the second one is a Bella. They both seemed to work well.
I was given a shampoo bar at a farmers market today...I'm sold on them now want to make some
How fun! They are the best, and just like making soap, with some slightly different ingredients and measurements 😊
Thank you... Can we use only tallow?
Hi , can I use tallow made form beef muscle fat not suet for tallow shampoo ? Would it work as well or would it make bars too soft. Thanks
Hi I started making this but my lye solution didn’t get hot when I realized I was only using 29%. What concentration do you usually use?
Could you please explain the difference between cold processed soaps and tallow shampoo bars? I’ve been making soaps a little over 1year now and find them so similar.
I was wondering if you had any alternatives to the lye mixing outdoors as I live in an apartment.
Does anyone know if she purified the tallow in this recipe? I purchased some that seems pretty clean, but I don’t want to ruin a whole batch by using it if it’s not gonna come out smelling really good. It does have a very very mild scent of beef. I tried to purify one quart the other day and it came out totally clean. Not sure if I got the heat high enough or not.
Thank you for sharing the recipe, I've just started making tallow.....I followed your instructions 😊, but now would like to make the shampoo bar, I was wondering if fresh goats milk can be incorporated as I have an abundance of it? If so, how much?
Your my favorite. :D Just adore your kiddos too..
😊 thank you!
@@BumblebeeApothecary You're welcome :) What state do you live in?
Hi I made a tallow shampoo bar recently, but I feel like it dries my hair a lot. I feel like with the amount of oils in it, my hair should come out soft. I have to use conditioner after I was my hair with the soap bar. Did I possibly put too much lye? I felt I followed the directions as is. Any advice would help!
I haven't made soap in years but would like to pick it up again, starting with this recipe. However I would like to tweak it a bit and use Rosemary oil for its promising hair regrowth potential. My husband has a receding hairline and asked if there was a shampoo that could help him and I've decided to make it myself since hair products are so toxic. He is going through cancer treatment and I don't want him to continue using the minoxidil (he's been using it for years, he's not quite as passionate about natural products as I am). Anyway I'm not sure how much to use or how to adjust the coconut oil and olive oil (I want to keep the castor oil as that is good for hair as well). I realize this will probably take some trial and error before I get it right but I was hoping that you could give me your thoughts so I could have a starting off point? There is no option for Rosemary Oil on SoapCalc and I don't know where to start.
I'm getting mixed info on coconut oil. Is it good? bad? I heard it's dehydrating..
I would like to try the shampoo bar before investing in ingredients. Do you sell them?
Do you make your own conditioner too?
cant wait to try this! Do you use the same crockpot and immersion blender ect for soap making and for food? Im just curious if I need to have separate supplies for soap and food ? Thank you!
I do have separate equipment, just because I make so much soap for my shop. But I don't think it's necessary, if you clean them very well in between uses. If you run them through the dishwasher, you should be fine :)
Thanks!
Hi Marisa, do you send your products, ie shampoo bar and conditioner internationally? In particular New Zealand?
Hi Marisa, thank you for your content it is wonderful and very helpful. My younger daughter has eczema and I have been using tallow/avocado oil balm for it and it seems to help. I am wanting to make shampoo as she has it very badly on her scalp. I have read, and I have a close friend who has told me, that olive oil can aggravate eczema so I would avoid using that in my shampoo. Also I have read quite a bit about coconut oil being contraindicated because it does not absorb well and can clog pores. I would love to hear your insights on the olive oil and coconut oil (with recommended alternatives if you have any please.) Thank you, kind regards Dominique
Thanks! Great question. If she is okay with soap made with coconut and olive oils, chances are this will be fine. They are probably referring to using olive oil and coconut oil on the skin directly, instead of the saponified version in a soap or shampoo bar that is washed off. Otherwise, you could try substituting the coconut and olive oil for avocado or another oil she does well with. It will change the properties of the bar a bit, but I am guessing it would work.
Hi Marisa, This is a great video, Thank You! Quick question before I jump in. Does the interaction of the lye and the fat/oil make the soap hypoallergenic? I have a son who is allergic to coconut and do not want to make a soap he would be allergic to. Thank you!!!
Thank you! Not that I'm aware of. If he's allergic to coconut, I would avoid making soap with coconut oil. I have a pure tallow soap recipe that would work great: ruclips.net/video/Q4w5lSTIFJQ/видео.html
shaebutter conditioner immediately afterward is awesome! My wife daughter and i really like this recipe. We dont use the essential oil. If i were to compare the lye to an electrical circuit, id say it is 120v when the circuit needs 119v. Its a teensy, teensy over voltaged. But its a really nice recipe nonetheless. ❤❤❤❤❤ im curious if the pH of the essential oil would be enough to the curve the bar? Im thinking citric or ascorbic. Or the shae butter conditioner. ❤❤❤❤❤
Tallo shampoo bar 2lbs

12.16oz water
4.55oz lye
8.89oz coconut oil
8.89oz olive oil
8.89oz lard
5.33oz castor oil
I want to do it by my self but i dont find the tallow in my country.
I’m kinda curious to see what happens when the lake falls on the snow 👀 I bet I can find a video somewhere here on RUclips 😆 Anyway, just getting into the whole tallow thing. Awesome video! 😁 I’ll probably start with making the regular soap from your other video, but I’m thinking about making my own lye from willow ash.
Thanks for sharing! :)
we make our soap and shampoo bars the same!! great minds think alike
That's awesome!
Hello Marisa, do you use sheep tallow? How does he behave?
I'm thinking about making my own soaps/shampoo bars, but what are your thoughts of the oils and stuff in the drain when showering?
Once they've been turned into soap or shampoo, they're no longer oils, and pose no danger at all to drains, no more than any other soap or shampoo :)
I followed your recipe exactly off your website step-by-step my oil / lye solution were both at 109 degrees 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ This was also before adding any essential oils
You can wait a little while for them both to cool a bit :)
Thank you for this! We made it today! I made a batch of this shampoo bar and a body soap. The recipes are very similar except for the tallow. I was wondering if this shampoo bar could also be used as a body wash bar? I'm asking because the two I made have the exact same color and my kids might mix them up. I think I will add a color to the soap next time to help differentiate them. Thanks again!
Yes you can use the shampoo bar for both! We do all the time :) Great idea to add color!
Curious how these worked for you. What is your hair type and did it dry it out? Did a vinegar/water rinse restore the hair after shampooing?
Thanks for this, Marisa! Do I have to worry about the drains?

What is the ph of your shampoo bar right after making it vs the ph after 4 weeks? The ph on my shampoo bar was very high (14) after I finished blending it. Will the ph drop as time goes by?
Yes! As curing happens over the 4-6 weeks, the ph drops. I haven't measured it, but in my research and experience I know this happens.
Lovely! Can I substitute tallow with lard? Thanks for sharing
Thanks, and you’re welcome! I’ve never tried using lard in these, but I would think you could, as they are very similar 😊 Let me know how they turn out!
Yes you can! I did this recipe with lard. I'm getting to do it with tallow for the first time tonight.
Hi! I recently stumbled on your channel and I love your content! I wanted to ask if you had written a book with all your homestead recipes (hygiene, cleaning products, and possibly food). I've been looking for one and I cannot find one. Will you please put one together?!? 😁
That's a great idea, thank you!!
I tried your shampoo bar recipe and I grabbed avocado oil instead of olive oil beans they were both sitting beside each other is there any good benefits from the avocado or do I need to start all over I certainly do appreciate your videos I came across due last week and decided to try this recipe didn't turn out exactly like yours but it will do if the avocado oil is good enough thank you so much for your time and energy especially with your children they are very beautiful and look very healthy God bless you and thank you for getting back with me when it's convenient
Thank you so much for the kind words! Avocado oil has great hair and skin benefits, so I am thinking it will work just fine to substitute avocado oil for olive oil. :)
Thanks for sharing. A question... You add lye to water and wait only 10 min. Don't you check temperatures until they're in same range?
I test the temp of the oils, but just wait 10 minutes with the lye water, and it comes to the right temp in that amount of time :)
I'm just getting into using tallow! I am really wanting to try this recipe. Do you find you need a conditioner after using the bar? I have fairly oily, soft/fine texture like you.
I use a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse to reset the PH, and I find I don't need any other conditioner. I like to make this: bumblebeeapothecary.com/herbal-hair-rinse-recipe/
I've just tapped the link for the lye and it's showing chemical oil spill blankets.
Do you have a shampoo recipe that doesn't include so many oils? Maybe just tallow and Castor? I need it to be more simple.
The little girl at 6:00 😂😂😂. My daughter did the same thing with her blanket corner up her nose
If I wanted to omit olive oil can I just substitute it with extra 5 oz of castor & 5 oz coconut oil to make up the difference?
I think that would work okay!
I don't understand the measurements 13.68 oz and 5.ll oz, my scale goes for 5.9 then after it changes to 6 oz,so I'm confused 😕 can you help me please?🙏
I'd say 5.9 - 6 is close enough :) But here is the recipe: bumblebeeapothecary.com/tallow-shampoo-bar-recipe/
I am wanting to make this recipe but the link to lye on Amazon doesn't work. What brand or type am I looking for? I've never used lye before. Thank you!
Thanks, let me go fix that! Here's a good link: amzn.to/3sk2UUf
But can you add fragrance oil say from brammbleberry as opposed to essential oil and would eucalyptus essential oil be too rad
You use fragrance oil, I don't because they're not natural. I prefer essential oils. I think eucalyptus oil would be very nice!
Are there any other variations of oils that can be used instead of castor oil. Such as jojoba, apricot, almond?
Great question! Castor oil is very good for hair, which is why I include it. I think you could substitute others, but I'm not sure if it would work the same.
Question when making all your natural DIYs like this one and bath bombs and tallow soaps is it ok to use my regular kitchen stuff ? I’ve heard some soap makers say not to mix it but I’m assuming it’s cuz they are using fragrances and other not natural chemicals. Wanted your thoughts on it
Good question! Since I use all natural ingredients, I think it's safe. I do have separate equipment for the items I make and sell, but otherwise I do use my kitchen equipment as well :)
how did you emulsify it? also there is water added so should we use preservative?
Do you mean bring it to trace? I use an immersion blender for that step. There is no water in the finished bars, so no preservative is needed.
Can you make the shampoo bars hot proceess in the crockpot? I would love to make some but wasn’t sure I could do it as hot process.
Yes you can! I had a batch go wonky on me one time, so I put it in the crock pot to finish as hot process, and it worked fine! The bars aren't as pretty, but they still work :)
Hi.what superfat you used to this recipe?I had used a homemade soap with 5% superfat for my hair and it leaves my hair very greasy. The vinegar didn't help.I read that it's better to low the superfat. Thanks
This one is at 5% superfat. I have hair that easily gets oily, and these bar leave my hair nice and clean. I have found that if hair is seeming too oily, reducing the vinegar in the rinse often helps. Too much vinegar can leave hair seeming oily. Hope that helps!
Why do you only let the lye water cool for minutes instead of to 100 degrees in this recipe?
It's so nice of you to share this!😊👍 I'm new to this so just help me understand how lye can be good for the hair? Also, I have very thick, curly, coarse hair and I normally use conditioner or hair masks. I'm not sure this shampoo bar would be sufficient. Any tips? Best regards from Sweden!😊
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching! There isn’t any lye left after the process is complete. It just works to turn the ingredients into the soap/shampoo, and none is left after that. As far as I know it would work well! I recommend doing a vinegar rinse to boost shine, smooth, and reset ph 😊
@@BumblebeeApothecary Oh, interesting! That's good to hear! 👍😊 Vinegar rinse? 😲 I don't know..we have a lot of fruit flies in the summer and vinegar is how we attract them to a glass and catch them. I don't want to be a walking fruit flie attraction, hehehe....😂😉 How does one do a vinegar rinse btw? Is there any other tip besides vinegar you can think of, I really don't like the smell of vinegar myself, even if it's really subtle after rinsing it out. I'm extremely sensitive to smells, and can detect even the slightest smell.
Haha! If you rinse it out thoroughly, it shouldn’t be an issue. I don’t notice any lingering vinegar smell myself 😄
As a side note, cut a Zote bar in quarters and use it as a body bar. I really like results.

Sorry to asked you,but why refined coconut oil? What's the difference of the soap besides price? Thanks.
I'm happy to help! The refined makes for better soaping properties, plus is does cost less. You could use unrefined, and it would probably work okay :)
Wonder if lye has a natural replacement, it just feels like if you should wear gloves when mixing then maybe it shouldn’t never touch us.
Marissa could we add honey to this recipe? If so what do you recommend as far as measurements ? I know adding to recipes can change the entire final result so definitely wanted to ask before I went for it lol
I've never tried that so I'm not sure!
Can you please help with the measurements, I already bought the other one and skips 2 oz.

Have you got a recipe for 100% animal based soap?
Do I have to put the tallow? Can I substitute that with more oil or coca butter? Thanks!
Hi, this isn’t my channel but I see you haven’t gotten an answer and I can help: you can substitute any oil you want but you must calculate again your lye, basically every oil has different properties, some are very cleansing, some are not, some are good to produce bubbles, some not and so on and so forth. Soapcalc is a good place to start, or any soap calculator out there where you can enter your ingredients and it’ll help you calculate what else you need, how much and it’ll tell you the properties of your finished bar.
I just made a batch and when I went to cut the bars they just crumbled. I didn’t have enough coconut oil so substituted avocado oil but didn’t make up for the missing coconut oil, could that be why it is dry? I have very thick oily hair and any product with coconut oil tends to leave my hair heavy, so thought it would be ok… any suggestions what happened?
Have you replaced that oil with another one, like tallow?!
@@alxdava2004 I did replace it with 6 more is of tallow and it seemed to set up better. I’m still waiting on them to cure.
Is this will work for curly hair , shiny or untangle hair? Please help, thanks. 🤔
Yes! I've heard of people with many different hair types loving these :)
Can you use your Crock-Pot for kitchen food after soap?
I personally have separate equipment for soap making, but I have heard that you can wash it thoroughly and use it again for food :)
Hi, how long do we need to cure the soap with tallow, please?
4-6 weeks :)
Good Afternoon, thank you very much for sharing your ingredient list to make this particular shampoo bar. Especially utilizing tallow to the mixture! That is a very nice touch as I prefer animal fats in my soaps. Quick question why must someone follow washing their hair with a Apple cider vinegar rinse? Is that step necessary in a hair care routine? Thank you in advance.
You’re welcome! The vinegar rinse is to reset the ph of your hair. It helps to smooth hair and boost shine. You can technically skip it and your hair would be clean, but you’ll have much nicer results with the rinse. The amount you need depends on your hair type and water, but I recommend starting with 1/4 cup vinegar in a pint of water, and adjusting as needed. 😊
Thank you for the reply! Since I have sent you a message I have seen tutorials for shampoo bars substituting water for Apple cider vinegar. None include the use of tallow. Experimenting can be fun but expensive! Any recommendations?
I’ve seen those also! I haven’t tried it yet, but I’d like to! I’ll probably share a video once I’ve tried it 😊
I was wondering the same thing if acv is neccessary. I tried acv & it made my hair so shiny & stringy. So I experimented with not using acv a couple of days ago. Now my hair is so soft & amazing. We have soft water & my hair is fine & oily but since omitting acv my hair is not oily. Hopefully this should be ok long term.
Can I use goats milk with the lye instead of water?
I think so, but I’ve never tried it myself. I’d probably run it through the calculator at soapcalc.net to see if other ingredients need to be adjusted at all, and to get an idea of the properties of the finished soap 😊
Can I use jojoba oil instead of castor?
Hi, this isn’t my channel but I see you haven’t gotten an answer and I can help: you can substitute any oil you want (technically jojoba oil is not an oil, but I digress), BUT you MUST calculate again your lye. Basically every oil has different properties, some are very cleansing, some are not, some are good to produce bubbles, some not, and so on and so forth. Soapcalc is a good place to start, or any soap calculator out there where you can enter your ingredients and it’ll help you calculate what else you need, how much, and it’ll tell you the properties of your finished bar.
I have fine hair that is oily. I have to wash it daily. Do you think that this soap would work well with my hair type?
That sounds very similar to my hair! I used to have to wash it more, but now I can wash it twice a week with these shampoo bars. I would say it's worth trying!
@@BumblebeeApothecary thanks! I will!
Did you double the recepie ? then the description below?thanks.
I tripled it :) Here is the recipe: bumblebeeapothecary.com/tallow-shampoo-bar-recipe/
I was making a Tallow shampoo bar soap Upon adding the lie solution both the oil and lie solution were at 109 degrees When I started using the immersion blender the bottom emulsified and got goopy really fast before the top could even mix and this is before adding any essential oils. I was able to salvage it and add essential oils and get it into the mold but it was so thick and hard to work with. What happened 🤷🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🙏
It sounds like it came to trace pretty quickly, which sometimes happens, but it sounds like it should still be okay!
@@BumblebeeApothecary So it’s been 24 hours since making the batch and of course it’s not very pretty it’s super bubbly but when I went to cut into it it was just breaking apart and flaking everywhere. What do you think I should do to fix it? I really would hate to throw a whole batch of good quality ingredients away
Hi again! Was wondering if you ever tried using chicken fat instead of some of the other plant fats, to soften the bar. Apparently, chicken fat is really good for that, and is also conditioning - but I've never tried and a bit scared to do so....haha
That's an interesting idea! I haven't ever had a large enough quantity of chicken fat to use in his way, so I haven't tried it. I am betting it would work well!
I went to your blog for the recipe...how many bars does this make? In the video it looks like quite a bit...
My recipe makes 8 bars. I triple the recipe in the video and make 24 because I go through so many for my Etsy shop 😊
Can you use something else than lye?
Not that I know of. There is no lye in the finished bars, it is just added to the recipe to convert the oils to shampoo. Once that process is done, it's gone :)
Best page huge fan !!!!!! I’m a butcher and have questions hahaha :) just made my first batch of tallow :) I’m gonna try face cream :) cause that what wife would like most :) I used mostly trim fat but clean cause I trimmed it haha but I did get some good organ fat from great and kidneys 🎉 would love to ask some questions if you do that ?!?! 😊 dope work 🙌
