The franchise does have a pretty good number of great Final Fantasy games with unforgettable stories, characters and music. The franchise isn’t for everyone though, but if you ever find yourself wanting to give another Final Fantasy game a chance that isn’t Final Fantasy VII, then in my opinion, you certainly have to play Final Fantasy VI. I’ve known a lot of people that don’t play RPG’s at all, they would strictly be FPS gamers, or fighting game players, and all it took was playing just one random Final Fantasy game between 1 and 12, and immediately they would become fans and ask which FF should they play next.
Dude I have great memories of both VII and X. I was like 5 when VII came out and I still remember how much fun me and my cousins had at the Golden Saucer. So many damn sleep overs just playing those mini games, it's hard to believe how much time has past since. X on the other hand was a completely different experience. Those same cousins stayed with us for a few weeks and I remember how excited we all were to play another Final Fantasy game except on the PS2 this time. I could go on and on, but there are countless moments where we all just sat in silence taking in the new music and the visuals. It was a completely different feel from VII, which honestly I always liked about the series. Plus the Blitz Ball theme was a BANGER! Also we laughed our asses off at 0:50 when Auron gets sucked into the portal! 💎
Not the video I was expecting when I put it in my Watch Later list, but this turned out to be much better than a list of rehashed "secrets" in the game that everyone knows about.
Xenosaga has a lot of these religious type of references also. It's a bit harder to get into the battle systems but the story is great and complex and, like I said, all the religious overtones and stuff. It gets super deep.
Same thing with the shin devil series persona heck even Digimon you just need to know where to look if you're a fan of Dante's Inferno check out Devil May Cry

Your craft in exploring these concepts has helped me over the time i've been digesting these, and I can only hope to see more in the future and it help more in that time!
This was a great video to watch, especially as someone who plays FFXIV where these same religious and psychological tones popped up in Shadowbringers. I just thought it was a neat idea to make certain characters seem even more powerful than what has been shown before, but now it's a bit spooky how close they are.
You know you can read the translated interviews about where they got their influences from and boy your minds about to be blown by the three world theory over all the Final Fantasy games
This is really compelling stuff, and thanks for leaving a lot of spoilers out as I haven't finished the game for myself yet but know the gist of it. I sorta see a lot of these same concepts in Kingdom Hearts right now, between the new concepts of Verum Rex and Falsus Rex brought in with KH3.
About a minute after I was thinking how closely related this all was to the elder god in legacy of kain you brought it up. I immediately liked and subscribed. Interested in seeing more content on your channel.
so then the adventure/journey the characters go through is their journey towards gnosis.. slowly attaining knowledge of the true ways of the world as they travel.. each character could also represent different virtues/skills that a journeyman is supposed to hone/embrace/overcome as they progress in their quest for gnosis.
I'm just going to comment right now. I literally JUST turned on the very first video I've ever seen from you, I'm 5 seconds into a FFX video and the intro is a Silent Hill 2 reference. Two of my favorite games of all time. I appreciate you lol.
Good, you opened a new door for content to play :) FFX and IX are imo the best fleshed out FF games, so I would definitelly suggest you you play IX one day too. On the topic of religious themed RPGs, Xenogears and Xenosagas should be right up your alley.

Anxiously awaiting a Xenogears video... Anywho, Xenogears is far beyond the Final Fantasy games in terms of religious/spiritual and psychological symbolism and exploration. It will definitely be on your top 5 most profound games list. A rather deep and thought provoking gem of a game, despite being rushed/unfinished and gameplay being decent at best. There are written works further expanding and explaining the narrative and subtext too, basically the ultimania, of which being "Perfect Works". Fun fact: Xenogears' premise was pitched to Sakaguchi for FF7 but was deemed too controversial for a mass audience. The story behind its development is very interesting as well.
Something, something, Great Will, something, something, Yaweh, something, something, Yaldoboath. Yeah, there's a lot of True God/Demiurge stuff in that series. And pretty directly too.
FF8 was my very first one when i was still in junior high/high school, then X after, i really recommend it as well because of that, but I also know it might not be for everyone? But it might not hurt to give it a try D:
Play 9, its my personal favorite, not the most dificult but it has the best characters and a really nice message about life and death. And a beautifull OST.
@@maxderrat ruclips.net/video/sisLg9Pajts/видео.html Can I farm this out to one of your immense pool of friends? Nexus mods app called vortex requires you to know one of the easier languages. If im forced to, then I suppose thats a healthy thing too.
I actually teared at the end of the game when it first came out years ago. The story was not forced and was aloud to develope with good pacing. A lot of battles but that is what true Jrpg games are.
I've mentioned this a couple times already, but now you have to play Xenogears, especially given the extent to which you've shown interest in games depicting the Gnostic creation myth.
I just paused the video to let you know that your introduction is killer, you just talked for one minute of the game and the proceed to teach me a lot of cool stuff that I never knew, that is so friggin cool!
I'm so glad you played this, and I learned something new! Incidentally, there is an entity similar to aeons (primals) in Final Fantasy XIV called Sophia. Her theme tune during the fight mentions gnosticism in the lyrics, and she summons a disembodied head called a Demiurge during the fight. Her theme seemed to be about maintaining balance and order, and she has a lot of iconography of weighing scales. I'd love to see what you make of Final Fantasy IX if you ever get the chance to play it. It's a slower burn than FFX initially and takes a while for the scale of the story to become apparent, but it has surprisingly deep themes despite its whimsical art style
Ironically with all the FFXIV attempts to deconstruct mythology, The Mother Crystal in FFXIV is ended up representing Pistis Sophia's role in FFXIV, just beforehand when a boss actually named Sophia is reduced into a major enemy Also Final Fantasy games will never escape Gnosticism, as Final Fantasy (and SMT/Persona) series relies on breaking the yoke of Fate and corrupt divinities, much like how Sethian Gnostic sects' narratives pertains to go for
Thank you for getting into my favorite series of all time. This was one of the 3 games, besides the love of my family and friends of course, that helped prevented my suicide and getting through my sadness after my father and grandparents died. FF9 was the last gift my dad gave me before he passed, if you ever play it, I hope that it is wonderful for you too. The Melody of Life. Edit: Also speaking on Gnosticism, if you ever want to get into the most Gnostic game I personally have ever seen there's the Xenogears and Xenosaga franchise. I would not recommend playing them, but watching/reading about them. That series mixed with FF9 and the thoughts, ideas, and emotions that went into them gave me a perspective that highly increased my value of life as a whole since I was a child.
I'll never forget first time visiting Macalania Woods. Great moment in my childhood, this game blew me away with its beautiful graphics, epic music, atmosphere and story.
If you want some more JRPGs that cover religious themes, I'd suggest Digital Devil Saga(s) 1 and 2, from the Shin Megami Tensei series DDS1 is mostly set-up for DDS2, but both games cover things from Hinduism and Buddhism, though DDS2 does it to a greater extent I mostly played the games for their gameplay (which is also fantastic), but DDS2's story was really interesting, even if it didn't go as in-depth as I wanted it to go
Pretty much every FF game has whole swaths of their own religious references... and they are not very consistent. I’m excited to see what your takes on FFXII, XIII and XV would be.
As an ex-gnostic now Christian I can say that your "simplified" explanation is faaaar better than most indepth videos I've seen over the years. Nice work, awesome video.
FFX is one of my favorite games of all time and one of the best entries in this series. it's always awesome to see other people discover how special these games and the intricately and well thought out stories they tell really are. FF7 and FF9 are my all time favorites but pretty much every main entry has something great to offer.
FFX is indeed a very good first choice for turn-based games. I'd love for you to cover Tidus, and what his fate in Mobius/X-2 and that of aeons in general could potentially mean in a gnostic sense.
I'm glad FFX is still being appreciated. It's a bit forgotten, between the peaks of FF7 and FF9 and the lows of FF13 and FF15, but it remains my favorite Final Fantasy title to this day.

I’ve known a lot of people that don’t play RPG’s at all, they would strictly be FPS gamers, or fighting game players, and all it took was playing just one random Final Fantasy game between 1 and 12, and immediately they would become fans and ask which FF should they play next.
@@jerrym1218 I dislike turn-based combat. It's ruined Yakuza 7 for me.
The breakdown I've been waiting two decades for!
LOVE this game, and your analysis makes it that much better.
@@rtyertrt7876 I gotta check those out. I got quite the backlog to catch up on. And loving JRPGs makes it take that much longer to keep up. lol. I have played the first Devil May Cry but it was like a decade ago. I'll have to play all those games coming up here this year. Thanks for pointing out a few games for me!

Considering I’m playing final fantasy x for the first time I’m glad this wasn’t too spoiler heavy. Great video
Final Fantasy X is my favorite in the series.
Unpopular opinion it may be, I don't care. I love the story, the lore, the characters, the world, the music, everything. Nothing's outdone it for me in FF.
This was my first FF game too back in 8th grade. Thanks for explaining to me why I truly loved this game all these years. Love these videos Max!
Matt? You mean Max?
@@dlbyrd-gasca2730 Thanks 😅
@@MillerTime981 No problemo.👍
I'm so glad you've found a girl. Go Max!
Thank you.
I've had an abnormal, inadvertent recollection of the imagery you shown, and a fascination with this game. Thanks for giving me names and references to study.
This is a fantastic concept, it got me very interested and I'm glad I watched your video, thank you for the fun subject Max 👍
Definitely would love to hear your thoughts about the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series if you ever got to that point, great video!
FF 10 is arguably the best introduction to the turn based games, its not too rough and allows you to see what effects the turns ect.
The first and really only Final Fantasy game I've taken so much interest in, I'm hoping to play it soon on my switch but I'm really glad this is your first Final Fantasy game, it's an amazing place to start.
Absolutely wonderful! I always enjoy learning more about my favorite games, the myths, the origins of thought that create them. It's truely superb! Your craft in exploring these concepts has helped me over the time i've been digesting these, and I can only hope to see more in the future and it help more in that time!
Incredibly insightful and well done video. Thanks for putting this out there, Max!!
Very informative, i tried to play other final fantasy game but only FFX hit me so hard. FFX is a masterpiece
Great video Max!
This was a great video to watch, especially as someone who plays FFXIV where these same religious and psychological tones popped up in Shadowbringers. I just thought it was a neat idea to make certain characters seem even more powerful than what has been shown before, but now it's a bit spooky how close they are.
Fantastic analysis, really enjoyed this. Would LOVE to see your analyses on other FF games, especially 9!
Dude went from never having played a FF game to having played almost all of them in 3 years.
Kuddos to your gf for showing you turn based games are great
i subscribe because of your synchronicity video and you do a video on the first major video game i loved.... of course
Loved this video! Thank you for this eye opening presentation!
Now you're thinking.... keep going.
I'm just going to comment right now. I literally JUST turned on the very first video I've ever seen from you, I'm 5 seconds into a FFX video and the intro is a Silent Hill 2 reference. Two of my favorite games of all time. I appreciate you lol.
Good, you opened a new door for content to play :)
FFX and IX are imo the best fleshed out FF games, so I would definitelly suggest you you play IX one day too.
On the topic of religious themed RPGs, Xenogears and Xenosagas should be right up your alley.
Interesting perspective.
Thank you for sharing and teaching.
I enjoyed every min

People missed the point of that scene. You, one of them.
@@abbemartensson3850 it's not super vague or anything.. I'm not sure that anyone who was able to operate the console and open the game was able to miss the point of that scene. The thing is, it's still funny
I kept memeing this until I player Kingdom Hearts, the dialogue in those games is just, well the logical extreme of the Tidus laugh.
As someone who has played the original pair and both remasters, I found this quite intriguing.
Shoutout to ya Max for these thoughtful video game vids, if i hadn't stumbled upon The Most Profound Moment in Video Game History, I would not be enjoying the MGS saga right now! I also intend to check out others you've talked about like Deus Ex for instance. Keep it coming!
😎👍
I realy do love learning things, and I feel like I learn so much from your videos! Thanks Max!
I feel like I do too, sometimes. 🧠
Xenogears sounds like a pretty cool game!👍
Every day I learn something new about FFX. You just open my mind to new knowledge. Your GF have good taste.
Holy dogshit. Max Derrat makes a FFX video? I'm losing my mind. I'm watching this right now.
Oh, and definitely play FF9 with the moguri mod.
I cant wait to buy FF9 for a 3rd time just to use that mod. I hope FF8 gets the same treatment.
@@memebump7612 FF8 really deserves it. Although they also both deserve the full remake treatment.
Shout out to Max's girl. Listen to your boo
Max the underlying religious topics and psychological symbolism in the Shin Megami Tensei series is incredible, you would probably love that series .
Something, something, Great Will, something, something, Yaweh, something, something, Yaldoboath.
Yeah, there's a lot of True God/Demiurge stuff in that series. And pretty directly too.
He very likely will, but I wonder if he'll be able to adjust to the gameplay of the older SMT games.
When you play FF7, keep in mind that it’s hinted by the dev’s and square team that they exist within the same world/universe
Legend of the Dragoon my man, it made me love RPGs
What an underutilized and underappreciated game.
Still has one of the most impactful deaths in any game imo.
Loved this, thanks Max.
My friends have the same view you had on turned based rpgs because they never gave one a chance and I was the same until I played Persona 3.
Woo, max talking about one of my all time favorite games?!? Its like early christmas!!!
such a well informed yet fresh take on what tens and hundreds of other tubers've reviewed almost in the same way
FF8 was my very first one when i was still in junior high/high school, then X after, i really recommend it as well because of that, but I also know it might not be for everyone? But it might not hurt to give it a try D:
Play 9, its my personal favorite, not the most dificult but it has the best characters and a really nice message about life and death.
And a beautifull OST.
Tbh, all FFs from 6 to 10 are worth playing

Can I farm this out to one of your immense pool of friends? Nexus mods app called vortex requires you to know one of the easier languages. If im forced to, then I suppose thats a healthy thing too.
SHOUTOUT TO THE GIRLFRIEND!!! Please thank her for me today!
This knowledge and insight means more to me than you’ll ever know. All the best to you!
I downloaded Xenogears very recently. I am very interested in playing it.
Ironically with all the FFXIV attempts to deconstruct mythology, The Mother Crystal in FFXIV is ended up representing Pistis Sophia's role in FFXIV, just beforehand when a boss actually named Sophia is reduced into a major enemy
Also Final Fantasy games will never escape Gnosticism, as Final Fantasy (and SMT/Persona) series relies on breaking the yoke of Fate and corrupt divinities, much like how Sethian Gnostic sects' narratives pertains to go for
Thank you for getting into my favorite series of all time.
If you want some more JRPGs that cover religious themes, I'd suggest Digital Devil Saga(s) 1 and 2, from the Shin Megami Tensei series
DDS1 is mostly set-up for DDS2, but both games cover things from Hinduism and Buddhism, though DDS2 does it to a greater extent
I mostly played the games for their gameplay (which is also fantastic), but DDS2's story was really interesting, even if it didn't go as in-depth as I wanted it to go
Pretty much every FF game has whole swaths of their own religious references... and they are not very consistent. I’m excited to see what your takes on FFXII, XIII and XV would be.
And again this video has blown my mind. I played FFX on release and this vid has still opened new ideas to me. Gonna have to go back for a replay now
Keep making amazing videos man been watching your videos all night! Great work
As an ex-gnostic now Christian I can say that your "simplified" explanation is faaaar better than most indepth videos I've seen over the years. Nice work, awesome video.
Great video! I am half way through my 4th FFX playthrough. I knew you’d like it Max.
You played FFX once, and you already understand it better than I do! :) I adore this game, thank you, it was a fascinating analysis!
Turn based games are the best bro. They require the most skill and strategy imo
FFX is one of my favorite games of all time and one of the best entries in this series. it's always awesome to see other people discover how special these games and the intricately and well thought out stories they tell really are. FF7 and FF9 are my all time favorites but pretty much every main entry has something great to offer.
Fighting those griffin characters and that sasquatch looking boss dude after Seymour drove me up the wall. But all in all a great experience.
FFX is indeed a very good first choice for turn-based games.
I'd love for you to cover Tidus, and what his fate in Mobius/X-2 and that of aeons in general could potentially mean in a gnostic sense.
Im trough ff8 but when i finish the 10 i will see this video, in the meantime i leave my respective like.
I'm glad FFX is still being appreciated. It's a bit forgotten, between the peaks of FF7 and FF9 and the lows of FF13 and FF15, but it remains my favorite Final Fantasy title to this day.
You made me say “holy shit” out loud multiple times throughout this. Great video. Interesting concepts to think about.
There’s yet yo be another game that has the same nostalgic feeling as this one.
