  • We have been running our off-grid cabin off of a solar / battery systems now for about 3-4 years. We've checked out quite a few different products in the past, but it's been about a year since we've looked at something new. @EcoFlowTech has just released some new models to their line-up, and today we're going to check out the DELTA 2. This is a medium sized unit that stores 1024Wh of power, with an AC baseline output of 1800W (not counting surge capacity). We'll get this charged up to 100% power using the 220 Watt Bi-Facial panels from ECOFLOW - and then attempt the run the cabin off of just the battery power for the entire weekend to see how well it performs.
    I will also share with you some tips along the way, to help you if you're new to the Solar Generator world - including a special rule that I created for myself to only ever charge my units using solar power - and the reasons why you should consider doing this as well.

    I'm an electrician and I recommend getting a gadget to plug into your outlets at home to see what the draw for all of your common appliances and tools (like hair dryers) use so if you want to use these battery banks you can estimate and intelligently use your appliances and tools without wondering when you'll lose power

    Hi Todd, love your videos. On YT I watch Will Prose, a smart young man. His channel is about solar & batteries. With a LiFePo4 chemistry on the Ecoflow, you said 3000 cycles, correct. You made a mistake concerning the percentage of loss. After 3000 cycles going from 100% - 0 you will reduce only 20%. Meaning 80% capacity after 3000 cycles. I hope this helps, thanks Todd.

    The cycle life is decreased to 80% not by 80%, the units are still usable after the rated cycles and if you are not cycling it every day the older models will last years. The Delta 2 does look great though.

    Outstanding review, in a true off-grid setting.
    You have heat from propane and woodstoves.
    You have wifi off the phones.
    Ever think about a mini water tower so you have running water to the sink and maybe for a brisk outdoor shower? You could pump water into the top of the tank with a hand crank or bicycle chained to a pump. Just need a garden hose to run it into the house and to the top of the tank. You could collect rainwater off the roof. Drain the system in the winter.
    Might have to run into town for beer and ice. Though you could start brewing some at home.

    • @1870s
      @1870s  Год назад +1

      We will likely add gutters to the cabin next season, and add some rainwater collection system - so we don't have to walk down to the river to get water for showers.

    • @brianczuhai8909
      @brianczuhai8909 Год назад

      @@1870s The higher the tank the more water pressure you will get.
      You are probably more than 300’ to the river? Otherwise, you could power a motorized pump at the water source below up through garden hoses to house holding tanks above. You can just put shut off valves on each end of the hoses when done and just keep them out there. The pump has to be strong enough to push 300’ of hose water upwards.

    • @1870s
      @1870s  Год назад

      I think vertically, the river is about 165' below the cabin. The cabin is also on the highest point of our land.

    • @brianczuhai8909
      @brianczuhai8909 Год назад

      @@1870s You could try to run garden hoses to the water below. Power a pump and motor below with your system. Leave the hoses lay out there. Just pull them in out of the river. That could give you water to fill water tanks at the cabin. You might have enough hoses to borrow from home to try it, to see if it works. Put in some shut off valves at the ends so you don't lose water in the hoses and can connect it up below.

    What would you recommend for a regular home? We are trying to decide which type of generator to get. I know it’s hard to find anything that can run a whole home. My husband looked into getting a generator that connects to the natural gas line but it’s $20k. That’s out of our budget. Having gas or propane will only work as long as you have fuel. So we thought of Solar, but if it’s not sunny out it won’t work well.
    We have been trying to find info on best type to have in case of crisis/grid shut downs etc. just haven’t found what might be the best option.
