Now a days a Watergate would be swept under the rug as a "no big deal" but back then it was enough to kick him out. He shouldn't have done it though. He was already winning in a landslide. He didn't have to find anymore dirt on his opponent.
TheMattd546 I'm not sad about it, he revealed his true nature. Only sorry it didn't happen before his COINTELPRO assassination campaign went into effect. It would be swept under the rug now but that is more of an indictment of the current dishonorable and lawless state of our system post Citizens United than an exoneration of Nixon. Ironic that the Trump agenda has more to do with dismantling the Nixon legacy of environmental stewardship and free trade than anything to do with Obama.

I was there in the crowd outside the White House along the rear drive to the right side (as looking from the front); I just happened to be visiting my brother who'd just hired on as an intern with the US Information Agency, and I, all of 22 years of age, had a break in summer school at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, went to the White House to be part of history. I'd been hanging out in the Senate gallery the past several days listening to impeachment talks and then that evening of Aug 8, Nixon announced he'd resigned the next day at noon. It was somewhat scary being at the White House that day, as DC cops, on horseback no less, were controlling our crowd to keep us out of the driveway where dignitaries were coming and going, would parallel their horses up against the crowd and push against us, to keep us up on the sidewalks, up from the curbs. I recall thinking that "this could get out of hand and could get ugly" but most of the folks there were not radicals or protesters, just everyday people, many bureaucrats taking a break from work, to witness history -- the first ever US President to call it quits. I also recall thinking some other scary notions -- that if there would ever be a convenient time for Russia to attach, this was it! But as we know now, none of that happened. I've been looking on the internet for photos of the crowds outside the White House that day, but not having much luck. There's a PBS special about the final days of Nixon that includes a quick pan of the crowd there that day....but no still pic's of the crowd that I've come accross yet. At now age 64 I'd like to see a photo of my youthful long-haired self at age 22 that day, peering in at the Rose Garden when Tricky Dick flashes his Victory signs for the last time before zooming off in his last helicopter ride. If anyone has any such photos I'd be most grateful. Roger Prillaman, Attorney at Law, Urbana, IL
