      @@evanhsiehNo, he was a crook. The investigation into the burglary unravelled a web of crimes that Nixon committed while in office. It also showed us that Nixon was taping a lot of conversations he had in the White House. He also sabotaged the peace talks between LBJ and Vietnam in '68 so that he could get elected in the first place. That's not even mentioning the secret bombing of Cambodia and how he tried to cover up the Pentagon Papers. Nixon was a crook. Now, if he didn't try to cover up the Watergate investigation so that it couldn't be directly traced back to him, sure, he probably wouldn't have resigned. He only resigned because he knew that he would be impeached by the House and most likely removed from office by the Senate and he didn't want that to happen. That most likely wouldn't have been the case. However, Nixon was a crook.

    I'm not a fan, but as a historian, it's clear that Nixon was probably the most important president of the past 40 years. He laid the groundwork for so many important aspects of our national policy today, from NEPA, the War on Drugs, the opening of relations with China, arms limitations with the Soviets, the establishment of the volunteer armed forces... But, without defending Nixon for what he did, political debate in the 2020s couldn’t hold a candle even to the greatest of scandals in the 1970s. The grace and eloquence of those bygone days will likely never be seen again in this era of hate, antagonism, and utter lack of respect for opposing views, enhanced by the sound and fury of social media.

    I also think that these words of Conrad Black pretty much sums it up: "Richard Milhous Nixon achieved as much as any American political leader since Abraham Lincoln, except for Franklin D. Roosevelt, and perhaps Dwight D. Eisenhower, and he did it against his own unusually troublesome anxiety and limitations and awkwardness. He was often his own enemy, because of his complex personality, and he attracted legions of constant conventional enemies. He fought successfully all his long life, and when he died, he was acknowledged to be unique - and, in his way, a great - American. His enemies fell away, and he slipped the surly bonds of mortal combat and became the embodiment, the allegorization, of generally well-intentioned determination, not less than human in his failings, but almost superhuman in his strengths. And he had begun to gnaw at the conscience of the nation."

      Nixon opened the doors to China, something that his immediate predecessors had never done; he established detente with the Soviets, something that his predecessors had never done too; he withdrew all the troops, including POWs from Vietnam; he, along with Henry Kissinger, had brought about the disengagement of Israeli and Egyptian forces. So Nixon's achievements were unique in some ways.
      Obama's achievements, on the other hand, were brought about because he continued the policies set forth by his predecessor, George W.. ObamaCare was patterned after RomneyCare.

    The Watergate Scandal, which is what led to Nixon's resignation, is actually referenced a couple of times in the Metal Gear series. First in Metal Gear Solid and it's remake "The Twin Snakes" then again in MGS2 Sons of Liberty. One of the references is shared, which is "Deepthroat", the informant from the Watergate Scandal. In the first Metal Gear Solid and its remake, Solid Snake is contacted via Codec by a mysterious being who identifies as such which leads to Snake referencing the aforementioned scandal. MGS2 had a callback to Deepthroat, only for the one trying to use that alias realizing that the one who previously used it was confirmed to be dead, which was Gray Fox.

    Nixon is/was easily the most complex and emotionally divided/challenged President that our country has had. He did many things that were morally corrupt in the context of history, but he also did many things that were just in that same accord. He let his own insecurities topple what he had built from a lifetime of dedication. There is poetic justice, and a sad irony to be found. No matter what, Nixon was our most "interesting" leader.And he did more (good or bad) than any ever could...

Yes, he did some bad things, but in his first year as president there were three launches into space, and he did the right thing by stepping down as president. He could have just done nothing, and serve out his term, but he had the balls to step down! I wish I could have shaken his hand! He was a great man!

      @giancarlo1985 7 лет назад +3

      No. Trump has already exceeded his constitutionally allowed limitations, and has already violated the oath of office. If he is being "careful", it's clearly not enough care. He has placed personal interests over the interests of the nation.

    • @gabrielblacklock3921
      @gabrielblacklock3921 7 лет назад

      Yeah but the problem is that neither he nor most of Congress thinks that he's done that. They think he's doing what's best for the nation. They also don't think he's violated the Constitution (and neither do I, for that matter, although he certainly has issued some bad policies).
      You may disagree, but until Congress thinks he's put his own interests above the interests of the nation, he won't be impeached. Honestly, I'd love it if he were impeached, but I doubt it will happen.

      That was the next day. In the morning before Ford was sworn in he made another little speech. He was under stress but didn't cry, just got a bit teary eyed, then went to his helicopter and flew away. But Barbara Walters cried. When the coverage switched back to the studio from the White House, Barbara was sitting there and her mascara had run down both her cheeks. Kinda surreal. You don't see that tape very often!
