After the turmoil of the Watergate scandal, and the initiation of impeachment proceedings in the House of Representatives, President Nixon decides to resign from office and announces the decision to the American people.
August 8th, 1974
President Nixon, I salute you for valiantly defending the Pentagon against the zombie horde.

Nixon may have been a crook, but at least he knew when to quit.
prescient
He wasn't a crook. If he just didn't let those other crooks break into the Watergate Complex he wouldn't have resigned. He just didn't do the right thing in that situation.
@@evanhsiehNo, he was a crook. The investigation into the burglary unravelled a web of crimes that Nixon committed while in office. It also showed us that Nixon was taping a lot of conversations he had in the White House. He also sabotaged the peace talks between LBJ and Vietnam in '68 so that he could get elected in the first place. That's not even mentioning the secret bombing of Cambodia and how he tried to cover up the Pentagon Papers. Nixon was a crook. Now, if he didn't try to cover up the Watergate investigation so that it couldn't be directly traced back to him, sure, he probably wouldn't have resigned. He only resigned because he knew that he would be impeached by the House and most likely removed from office by the Senate and he didn't want that to happen. That most likely wouldn't have been the case. However, Nixon was a crook.
@@FloridaMan4205 I know all of what you said. He was a great man (before watergate and that stuff) but people just didn't accept him because he didn't go to an Ivy League school?!
@@evanhsieh I mean, he went to Duke, which is basically the closest thing you can get to an Ivy League school that isn't an Ivy League school. I don't see why he wouldn't be accepted for that.

At least Nixon had the decency to do this when he knew he had this option.
Get used to Trump dear.
Matthew Klahn I do hope Trump resigns before impeachment because the left thinks it knows what violence looks like. If Trump is ousted, we will elect a violent dictator, and that one will scoff at your due process as he systematically consolidates his power by force and bloodshed.
@@generalralph6291 I'm pretty sure the U.S. President doesn't have that kind of power.
@@matthewklahn7523 It just isn't logical for a U.S. resident to become a dictator considering how many limitations there are to the presidency. He/she can't really do much without the approval of Congress, and even if they somehow managed to convince all of Congress to completely throw out the Constitution, there's too much resistance from the press and the public for anything notable to happen.
@@matthewklahn7523 Again, that's not a dictatorship. He can order the armed services for a maximum of 60 days. And even if Trump steps down from office and gets a pardon, that's still not a dictatorship. Is it wrong, yes, but so is the two-party system that birthed it.

I'm not a fan, but as a historian, it's clear that Nixon was probably the most important president of the past 40 years. He laid the groundwork for so many important aspects of our national policy today, from NEPA, the War on Drugs, the opening of relations with China, arms limitations with the Soviets, the establishment of the volunteer armed forces... His administration is just loaded with significant public policy initiatives.
War on drug made everything worse and drugs are winning tho
@@ethiostaticETV To be fair, important doesn't necessarily mean "good". Like him or not, Nixon was one of the most consequential presidents, both for the good that he did and the bad.
coordinating an influx of drugs in urban areas...
EPA and visiting China to further the Sino Soviet split were his biggest accomplishments. We are definitely losing the war on drugs.

Nixon did the right thing to resign. Because he didn't want his crime record exposed deeply.
He knew there is a secret government that's why they impeach him
Steve Rodriguez oohhhh
Not really if a president resigns before being fired he still gets the pension
Nope, he resigned because he and Gerald agreed for him to be pardoned imediately once he resigned, immediately placing Gerald as POTUS. If he didn’t resign, it would not be certain the next sitting president would save him.
I remember watching this on TV but I was too young to understand what was going on. I remember people's disappointment because, at that time, he was the most popular president ever and the bigger they are the harder they fall. People used to believe the president was infallible, this incident ended the idealization of that fantasy.

@@josedcarrillo24 I hope so mate!
I saw this as a nine-year-old, barely grasping the historical significance. But, without defending Nixon for what he did, political debate in the 2020s couldn’t hold a candle even to the greatest of scandals in the 1970s. The grace and eloquence of those bygone days will likely never be seen again in this era of hate, antagonism, and utter lack of respect for opposing views, enhanced by the sound and fury of social media.
I almost got drafted. I like Nixon. We got out of Nam with him.
So when does he start crying like a mad person?
+和ァ独 in his farewell address to the white house staff
WaaDoku 【和ァ独】 I was literally waiting for that part
I also think that these words of Conrad Black pretty much sums it up: "Richard Milhous Nixon achieved as much as any American political leader since Abraham Lincoln, except for Franklin D. Roosevelt, and perhaps Dwight D. Eisenhower, and he did it against his own unusually troublesome anxiety and limitations and awkwardness. He was often his own enemy, because of his complex personality, and he attracted legions of constant conventional enemies. He fought successfully all his long life, and when he died, he was acknowledged to be unique - and, in his way, a great - American. His enemies fell away, and he slipped the surly bonds of mortal combat and became the embodiment, the allegorization, of generally well-intentioned determination, not less than human in his failings, but almost superhuman in his strengths. And he had begun to gnaw at the conscience of the nation."
Beginning a transfer of wealth, getting of the honest gold standard, until here we are today? ...and nothing but a mutt to Prescott Bush, being beholden to him?
Naw he sucks ass
He is no hero. He dropped hundreds of thousands of bombs on Cambodia, a neutral state.

It takes a real leader of a country to put the country before him. This man was a leader
***** and you could do better?
you know i revoke my comment cause we actually just learned about him in US history and shit i was way off so my bad
Highly doubt Nixon ever considered his own nation. It contains no admission of wrongdoing, so his speech was just a excuse. How ever I do admit it respects the Presidency as an Institution, but only to save his own flesh.
Nixon opened the doors to China, something that his immediate predecessors had never done; he established detente with the Soviets, something that his predecessors had never done too; he withdrew all the troops, including POWs from Vietnam; he, along with Henry Kissinger, had brought about the disengagement of Israeli and Egyptian forces. So Nixon's achievements were unique in some ways.
Obama's achievements, on the other hand, were brought about because he continued the policies set forth by his predecessor, George W.. ObamaCare was patterned after RomneyCare.
Are you daft? This man killed a lot of Cambodia because a little voice told him viet kongs were hiding out there! (which resulted in absolute bullshit) Cambodia, a peaceful country… this guy has always been worthless, fuck him. may he rest in pieces
I feel sorry for him. What he did was terrible but he did a lot of good for this country.

“I have made a severe and continuous lapse in my judgement and I don’t expect to be forgiven, I’m simply here to apologize”
Just wanted to see what a presidential resignation looks like for when it happens again soon
alvatrous Trump is too much of an egomaniac to ever give a speech like this. To put, as Nixon says, America first, before his personal interest, is unthinkable for someone like Trump.
Truly a watershed moment in American politics. Hell, even American History. A shame he wasn't ever tried for this
At a cost of Ford being elected as president
truly one of the watergate moments in american history
Not to "reveal" the crimes of Nixon, but to "hide" the influence of the CIA and their ilk. Just like the "suicide" of Jeffery Epstein. Hide the "real power" .
The irony is he didn't need to pull a Watergate. He could have been on the receiving end of Watergate and won big time.
Where the fuck is fry and bender? I want a refund!

The Watergate Scandal, which is what led to Nixon's resignation, is actually referenced a couple of times in the Metal Gear series. First in Metal Gear Solid and it's remake "The Twin Snakes" then again in MGS2 Sons of Liberty. One of the references is shared, which is "Deepthroat", the informant from the Watergate Scandal. In the first Metal Gear Solid and its remake, Solid Snake is contacted via Codec by a mysterious being who identifies as such which leads to Snake referencing the aforementioned scandal. MGS2 had a callback to Deepthroat, only for the one trying to use that alias realizing that the one who previously used it was confirmed to be dead, which was Gray Fox.
Nixon is/was easily the most complex and emotionally divided/challenged President that our country has had. He did many things that were morally corrupt in the context of history, but he also did many things that were just in that same accord. He let his own insecurities topple what he had built from a lifetime of dedication. There is poetic justice, and a sad irony to be found. No matter what, Nixon was our most "interesting" leader. And he did more (good or bad) than any ever could...
I just remember him for the phrase "I'm not a crook"
it is disappointing that so many people disapproved of him. Yes, he did some bad things, but in his first year as president there were three launches into space, and he did the right thing by stepping down as president. He could have just done nothing, and serve out his term, but he had the balls to step down! I wish I could have shaken his hand! He was a great man!
The moon landing never happened, wake up
Did some bad things??????? He literally bombed a neutral state. Wtf
It’s funny! The corruption today makes this look like child’s play
Haha, I love how the description says: "Artist: Richaerd Nixon"
I mean at least he did this in his second term and not his first
In my opinion, Nixon is one of the best presidents we've had. He got us out of Vietnam and broke the tension with the Soviets
He also instituted damaging price controls and oversaw one of the greatest and grandest thefts in history when he closed the gold window.
Absolutely, and so did Reagen for freeing the hostages in Iran.
This is Trump in couple of months lol
Don Dan yeah
There's no way that Trump would be this gracious.
Trump will be way too careful to let himself be impeached in a couple months
No. Trump has already exceeded his constitutionally allowed limitations, and has already violated the oath of office. If he is being "careful", it's clearly not enough care. He has placed personal interests over the interests of the nation.
Yeah but the problem is that neither he nor most of Congress thinks that he's done that. They think he's doing what's best for the nation. They also don't think he's violated the Constitution (and neither do I, for that matter, although he certainly has issued some bad policies).
You may disagree, but until Congress thinks he's put his own interests above the interests of the nation, he won't be impeached. Honestly, I'd love it if he were impeached, but I doubt it will happen.

To compare Trump to Nixon is abhorrent. Nixon understood that he had to do what was best for the country even if it meant tarnishing his party. Trump does not give a $hit!
You must hope that you will never have to endure the humiliation and abuse that this man suffered. Yet he endured it with courage and accepted his fate. Flawed like all of us, but he was a brave man, as he shows in this speech.

That was the next day. In the morning before Ford was sworn in he made another little speech. He was under stress but didn't cry, just got a bit teary eyed, then went to his helicopter and flew away. But Barbara Walters cried. When the coverage switched back to the studio from the White House, Barbara was sitting there and her mascara had run down both her cheeks. Kinda surreal.
