UPDATES: Many of you have brought up Dragon Meeting Vegapunk and "seeing him", but in reality the dialogue used by dragon here could be spoken by fujitora and still make sense, But let me address it here:
Here's the entire dialogue straight from the Manga chapter 1066:
Viz -"Its been a while!! Hello Vegapunk!! Not that i had to guess it was you, thanks to that head of yours"
TCB: "Its been awhile vegapunk!! As usual that big head makes you standout!"
its subtle but instead the raw japanese says
"久しぶり ベガ パンク!!!! 相変わらず 目立つ頭だ 一目でわかる"
Rough Direct translation: "long time no see Vega Punk!!!! As always, his head stands out and you can see it at a glance."
So
1. 2 notes to make is that i roughly translated the words directly to show "you can see it at a glance" technically it can be shortened to "recognized at a glance" or "understood by a glance", but if you notice neither translation TCB/VIZ went word for word because contextually it's meaning that dragon is saying his big head is recognizable and the implied understanding is that he would be recognizing it visually. And normally in our world i would agree with you, that'd be damning evidence that dragon is using his eyes (so not blind and maximum he has impaired vision). BUT that's where the one piece world comes in, I don't know how you would describe what Fujitora is essentially sensing when he is "seeing" the color forms of all the people around him in chapter 799. Though luffy in future sight isn't technically "SEEING" the future, he is getting the images into his brain without his eyes, but we still call that seeing into the future. Similar to Fujitora "seeing" the blobs of people, well enough btw that he can go hand to hand combat with Zoro, Luffy, Sabo, Greenbull, etc. Observation haki is how a Blind man sees in the one piece world and this theory does not claim that dragon is completely without senses. and How detailed can this form of sight be? well look at Chapter 796 where fujitora is able to react to the sides of the dice and knows he lost the bet, no one had to tell him what side the dice was on. it was immediately recognized. in chapter 723, Fujitora shows that he can see the clouds without sight. Which yeah in our world all that isn't possible, but given observation haki is a thing the way it is, you can have characters be fully blind but have full on hand to hand combat. And i don't even think dragon is fully blind, but if he were, then like i said swap fujitora in for where Dragon is saying what he said to vegapunk and it still makes sense. Fujitora would also be able to instantly tell its vegapunk "At a glance" based on how huge vegapunk's head was. Imagine vegapunk was in the crowd at dressrosa, WE WOULD be able to tell vegapunk apart from EVERYONE ELSE using fujitora's vision just based on the head. ANOTHER EXAMPLE i thought of while writing this, is Usopp in dressrosa too. He was able to see law,luffy, and sugar WITHOUT HIS EYES with haki AND able to tell them from their shapes. we know it was without his eyes because it was so far and behind multiple walls. Did usopp "see" that?
2. You might have noticed the fun pun though. ALL TRANSLATIONS had dragon say "it's been a while" but the japanese wording is "hisashiburi" which you might know the common idiom here. That directly translates to LONG TIME NO SEE. and as a reference, the EXACT SAME phrase "久しぶり" is in chapter 540 said by ivankov to crocodile and its translated officially to "Long time no see." even in english it does make sense because you'd probably find yourself being able to interchange both phrases "its been a while" and "long time no see" but in japanese you could basically say both with the same wording. And you can see how insanely ironic it would be for Dragon to say "long time no see" IF this theory were true.
EMPHASIS on IF THIS THEORY were true. idk how many people missed it in the video, i even said in the video, the theory could easily be wrong and the interesting things i pointed out would just be a coincidence, i've acknowledged that LOL. but also this video is not in a vacuum its along side multiple dragon videos, so check those out for more udnerstanding why from a character perspective i think this theory makes sense. But also as you can probably tell by the above response, i cut this analysis out of the video LOL there was 2-3 more "panels" that i dissected, but cut out because i didn't want this video to be a 40 minute video on a shot in the dark theory of dragon being blind. its a High Risk High reward theory, but the reason i separated it out from the other 3/4 dragon videos is because i didn't want the obviously high risk stakes of this theory to boggle down the previous one for example, where i alluded to this idea. So many people immediately turned off of this idea without hearing it fully through and not realizing i addressed much more in this video later on. And so i predicted as such with this idea and decided to separate it out from the other theories because i didnt want the other ideas to be hurt, but also if i added the FULL WEIGHT of my analysis into this video, it'd just be long and reiterating the same overarching points and i'd much rather you all look at dragon again with this lens and figure out where you're at. So if you read this far, OR RESPECTFULLY DISAGREED with me in the comments, i appreciate you all. I love going back and forth with people who provide their dissenting opinion just as much as all the appreciative comments.
I do want to acknowledge another point that someone brought up, in regards to "why it would even matter if dragon were partially blind." and that's a great question i should have emphasized this more honestly IF i made the video longer this is exactly what i would have or should have covered. And it's that blindness as a trope in fiction is often all or nothing. People have no pupils to indicate the blindness, which isn't true. Blind people have pupils, but ALSO a huge stigma is that in order to be blind it means you cannot see, which means total darkness, but in reality upwards of 80-90% of blind people recieve light, some visuals, or are so impaired depite being able to get light that its legally blind. And ironically, Oda could have been in that camp, if you remember oda has been dealing with visual impairment for years and it progressively got worse and it was inhibitting him. So oda doing this would be really cool from a realistic perspective, BUT from a one piece perspective, visual impairment of any kind for dragon could be a huge central character reveal that you could not convince me wouldn't be able to be used in a meaningful way. as an example, It could be used for comedic relief (like toph in avatar) or gags, and those gags being stuff oda experienced. BUT look at fujitora the blind man that can sense CLOUDS with no eyes and SEE people with observation haki on a scale that makes what usopp did in dressrosa kind of simple. (though usopps was kind of far, i'd imagine though fujitora might be able to see just as far). and it is a realistic trope that when someone's senses dulls, their other senses magnify and that seems to apply to observation haki as we see the way luffy had to TRAIN OBSERVATION HAKI with rayleigh was blindfolded. WHen luffy used future sight the first time it was eyes closed. So dragon being impaired visually could allude to this kind of power, which is why in the first dragon video i tied to breathe of all things which in the manga we see zoro's eyes closed, he's hearing the breathe. AND being the leader of the revolutionary army the way he is and being partially blinded to the point where he cant see wanted posters (if thats the case), then it makes you wonder how he got that way. Kuma lost his will due to his deal with a demon, so is dragon the same way?
and one more thing that i discovered after posting this video. Dragon in chapter 1066, says the giants captain "is a strange man covered in bandages." that's super odd right? Dragon was in the navy, the man he is talking about is one of like 8 giants in the entire marines. Surely VICE ADMIRAL SAUL who was friendly with garp as we see in chapter 0, and sengoku, and kuzan, would be someone Dragon would know. and even more so, in chapter 1108, Doll references that her senior officer was a giant, and JUST from that information, Bluegrass knew it was saul. Saul is a recognizeable giant, and yet instead of saying their captain with the red hair, his depiction was the bandages. And saying he was a strange man AGAIN IN THIS CONTEXT seems kind of odd, i would imagine he would be able to recognize saul. And honestly i was thinking about this in reverse, Why wouldn't saul recognize dragon (but we didnt get that interaction). but i would imagine even at the time, dragon was in the newspapers at the time for freedom fighters, if dragon was in the navy and was associated to garp why wudnt saul immediately recognize him? he didn't even have his tattoos yet. And i'm not ready to look deeper on that front, but wudnt that imply that dragon's relationship to garp was hidden in the navy? and i kind of realized even without saul. wouldn't that be the case. The revolutionaries didn't know Dragon's full name, they couldn't have. Because Garp's full name is globally recognized, so the only way dragon could have hidden his connection to garp in the revs is if they didn't know his full name. BUT that would mean that the navy ALSO didn't know dragon's full name either. Because the shock at marineford wasn't that luffy was garp's grandson, it was that dragon was luffy's dad. which makes me hella confused on how dragon was even in the navy as garp's son? BUT garp told aokiji in 1087, that his son is a revolutionary. The only thing i could really htink of is Garp pulled a judge. Where the WG/Navy didn't publish dragon's full name so that they wouldnt sully the Hero of the marines name. we know kuma only read the name outloud as Dragon. So yeah. LMFAO i probably could have made an entirely separate video just on all this. ehh sigh, people are so critical it's hard to put stuff out there like this. anyways

The Ohara indecent was like 22 years prior to current events. Dragon met with Vegapunk shortly after. So It's possible Dragon's eyesight just got worse over time, (20 years is a long time.) Or that he lost it in an event between then and now.

I only made the distinction because Sabo makes the distinction in the panels and its the strife of their family. They were rich but yeah they didn't royal nobility, but yeah sabo just before is the one who splits it up. But yeah that still doesnt dismiss that dragon had to guess instead of recall it from seeing him just before. There actually no mutual acknowledgement. Like to this day sabo might not fully remember that random man was dragon ultimately

If you can, it might go a long way to edit in a little bit of text correcting the mistake in the video, to help other viewers remain in the flow of the video and not be jolted like that. It’s not really a huge deal, but for me it makes the difference between this being a good video and a great video (as it is still very good even with the mistake)
You know what could be interesting, oda has eye issues, had to have surgery, what if the ilusions to loss of site and its ability to open you up to other experiences is linked to that.

Ok i like this. It fits with my theory that Dragon uses the wind to gather information somehow (with VOAT or like how Toph in Avatar uses earth bending to "see" or tree roots to gather info) . If he really is blind maybe that's why he makes it windy around himself most the time and how he knew where everyone was in log town to free them. He uses the wind to "see".
maybe its like a breath of all things type thing, maybe he gathers info from wind or he can somehow hear it in the wind with observation haki (since he has wind related haki powers). being blind would also heighten every other sense in it’s place meaning scent and hearing could be boosted even further with this wind/haki combination. If he has a wind logia I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d be able to kind of emulate Enel’s observation feats of being able to sense and hear people miles away. Probably not to Enel’s extent, but if he had a draft going in to himself from all over the island he could pretty much know what’s happening everywhere.

This theory might have just had more foundation out of the recent episode. Dragon's eyes in the flashback are silver and when you go the present, they are white. It seems to be that it happened after he got the Tattoo.
Yeah, it could be that his blindness has something to do with his tattoos and maybe his devilfruit. It would fit the timeframe with him having vision at ohara with bo tattoos and no vision/heavily impaired vision when meeting sabo with tattoos roughly ten years later.
I like the idea of Dragon being blind. Gives me comps to Roy Mustang from the end of FMA. I like the idea too of him not being blind, but losing his vision. Like maybe his vision is just cloudy and the man has a wind logia. Maybe he even had Cloudy Justice in the marines.

At first, I thought the theory was a reach cause of a small error made by Oda years ago, but then the Sabo and Dragon conversations make so much more sense now! Great Theory!!

I mean like, people often say "What is this" in disbelief when they see something that they either don't believe or don't want to believe. It seems like Dragon was just astonished to see his son getting so notorious and was upset for the aforementioned reasons of not wanting connections that his enemies could exploit. And since he obviously never told anyone about Luffy, his subordinate would have just been confused and started listing off whatever he knew about the subject.
I mean if he was actually blind, observation haki or otherwise, then he wouldn't even know the paper was a wanted poster. For all he knew he'd just be holding a random piece of paper lol. Also later on this theory literally devolves into "Well okay so we did see him read a few times but uh maybe he was just pretending" lol. Like he doesn't look confused while leaning over to read on the cover story, he just looks intense like he always does. And the bit with him not holding a newspaper like, yeah he could get that info from the news, but he's also the leader of the Revolutionary Army. he's probably reading a report made by his subordinates for him specifically to read, seeing as you would probably get a lot more relevant info about your own battles against the world government from your own army than you would via a newspaper that is owned and censored by the enemy you're trying to take down...
All the news he gets is delayed. Specifically the ivankov example. He refers to the old news not today's news. And it's crazy that oda gave him double elipses to the question about seeing the news. And for the wanted poster, I thought about that too. But just like you said it seems like one way. The reality is we don't have a stable footing for what his reaction is even there. Was he upset? That scene made it seem the opposite? But was he excited by seeing it? Well that's whats weird he even smiled and needed to get air which seemed like privacy. But later on when luffy had taken down doflamingo one of his greatest obstacles for liberation and proceeded down the line. It's crazy that oda obfuscated dragons reaction despite everyone else in the same chapter reacting to the news including his subordinates. And that's all public now. That to me is having dragon left out of a cycle every time. I did mention it but it's hard to depict this detail in visuals or words without showing the entire chapters but so as for it to have devolved into he was pretending to read or it was a misunderstanding that's why the context of the other clues and their chapters were important. If oda wanted to hide it, he did a good job. But if he didn't those scenes that would be kind of weird moments. The sabo one specifically. But hey maybe we can just drop it into the bag of weird things about dragon that doesn't make sense until it does or its a mini weird thing. Like alot of current dragon depiction haha just tryna make sense of the weird character he created within dragon, definitely think there's something here
Its all theories and naysayers until the chapter drops and the theory is *CONFIRMED.* Interpretation of One Piece is just as important as theory crafting, maybe the interpretation is even more important. Its not about what is correct or incorrect, its about interacting with the media and really considering its themes and messages.
We will get Dragon's backstory. There is a reason he is the way he is. Before it is all over we the audience will be satisfied.
We do see him put down a stack of wanted posters, so maybe he can tell that it's a bunch of posters from the way they feel in his hands but can't read them.
I just think he’s illiterate like luffy and doesn’t want anyone to know cause he probably thinks that makes him unfit to lead, in one of the sbs oda said that if the revolutionaries found out his secret they’ll still follow him, I feel like him not being able to read is going to be a funny gag that contrasts his strategical planning abilities cause oda likes making extremely competent people have silly flaws

i really like the idea of dragon being blind, especially with his pupils still being drawn! first that's a nice change from the empty eyes tropes but like you said it could be a way to show he's not 100% "i see nothing at all" blind but severely impaired/legally blind, that'd make me really happy to see more blindness as a spectrum since it's pretty much always all or nothing in fiction!
i also wonder if akainu has something to do with his blindness, intense heat very close to the eyes can damage or even blind them, if that one jules verne novel i can't remember the name of is accurate it used to be a way people would punish criminals by holding a torch to their eyes to blind them. (jules verne did make up a bunch of things though so maybe not a real thing that happened) but i think it could be interesting considering these two have some kind of past and how dragon "couldn't see any justice there".
And it might be done really well since know oda personally has experienced a degree of vision loss that it impaired his work or made it much more difficult

been watching chapter streams and your syv talk vods for the last like 10 weeks. Love you so much bro you and syv bring the best energy to this space and this theory has to be one of your best yet. Makes so much sense. Everything about his portrayal points to him being visually impaired. I also love the shadows theory. So goated. Best and most relevant one as of recent.
He definitely had enough sight to spot vegapunk's distinctive dome (and comment on its increased size) in chapter 1066, when they both met up on Ohara.
Maybe he's extremely far-sighted, which is why he can't recognize a bounty poster from a few feet away but can make out a person at medium distance? Would make for a good play on words for the term "far-sighted".
in vegapunks flashback to Ohara, doesn't dragon say something like "I recognized you bc of the size of your head"?
He says, I don't need to guess because of how big your head is. Which even fujitora could have said that line and it'd make sense. That's what makes the observation haki part of it cool

I am about halfway through the video when commenting here, so apologies if this is mentioned in the video. Another thing if your theory ends up on the money: If the other common theory about Dragon is that he has some sort of wind or storm-based devil fruit, perhaps he can feel people with the wind surrounding himself? Sort of like when a person who has vision disabilities touches somebody's face to see what they looks like. Also similar to echolocation. Also another foil to Imu's seeming all-seeing eyes that keep a heavy, controlling gaze upon the world.
Well, Dragon commented on Vegapunk's head making him stand out. And we saw him reading the Sabo incident article.
What he actually says there, is I didn't need to guess that was you because you're head to big. That could easily be observation haki like fujitora seeing a blob. And did we see him reading the sabo incident? It's everyone else that is looking at the papers all he said is that the truth needs to be ascertained. There was one panel when they met up that I didn't mention that dissuaded me but it's not based on reading haha but fujitora was able to do things like gamble with dice. So dexterity isn't something I'd discount either

With the amount of times dragon has felt like he's been dragging behind, i think him being legally blind would fill in every strange instance of dragon thus far.

If Dragon is as strong as everyone thinks, and especially if he is as powerful as Fujitora in a sensory type of way, he wouldn't need to go anywhere near that village to sense or feel his son. Even if he did go he'd know Ivankov or others were watching him go to Fushia Villiage and everything we know is he refuses to let anyone really know who Luffy really is.
We can go back and forth, but he doesn't need to potentially expose his hidden son to others after seeing how Rogers own potential heir led to a lot of deaths of countless innocent mothers and infants just 2-3 years before. In that scene he walks away from the RA soldier with the bounty poster on the table right as the soldier is saying "you know the great Marine Garp? Some say he is the grandfather the captain...." he is just protecting identities from a low rank intelligence officer in that scene during Post Enes Lobby. Dragon saw his son in Loguetown and Goa before so he recognized his son on the poster and higher bounties but likely didn't want to appear very interested, because as we learned in flashbacks he didn't want his son used against him and the Revolution. Then right after learning Luffy had a higher bounty from taking down Enes Lobby and declaring war on the WG he walked outside and said Luffy chose his own path, and someone like him is who would make "people question the world."
@@SinkrSwim 💯, i agree with your point, dragon was masking his connections to luffy as he knows if any of his low level officers gets captured/if he got inflitrated by cipher pol they could snitch on him and dragon would have to put himself in harms way to save luffy risking the revolution if dragon dies/gets captured. Otherwise dragon is constantly daydreaming and scheming up evidence gathering or the eventual war that hes now begun to enact

I think the relationship between the two of them will be super important as they are both close to luffy not only as friends but brothers in arms the three amigos and that this fated meeting of the grandsons of garp will take place on the sabaody archipelago making it the saboandcoby archipelago

The reason I created the distinction is because Sabo separated them in the same speech. + part of his family struggle was they wanted to be "royal noble" which is what stelly achieved by marrying into the royal family + it wouldn't have changed the overarching point that dragon still "guessed" instead of just divulging exactly who he was because he was told it by the boy himself and that he wanted to leave not stay.

Chapter 1066 the dialogue between dragon and vegapunk goes “ dragon - hello vegapunk not that i had to guess it was you , thanks to that head of yours” meaning that at least when Ohara was Buster called, he had sight. This theory is pretty good. The only issue is past dialogue and backstory proves this theory otherwise.
I'm curious now. If we swapped Fujitora with dragon in that scene, what would vegapunk look like to him? Would Fuji's blind vision create the full head length of Vegapunk, or just a generic human outline? In dressrosa it seems like Fuji is seeing their auras, so I'd imagine Vegapunks aura stretches up to include his elongated head based off the traditional depiction of what auras look like around humans. So if Dragon had something similar to Fujis vision, then it keeps the theory in tact.

Put fujitora in that situation. The dialogue makes sense. He said I didn't have to guess and if its fujitora vision then he'd just see a giant head. Cool video! I think the symbolism of what dragon represents can be represented by blindness with heightened awareness of the world like fugi. But I don’t think dragon is literally blind or visually impaired!
The scene with Luffy’s bounty pic I think dragon asks “what is this?” is a plot device to connect Luffy and his father and it shows Luffy’s growing impact and influence around the world as it has reached the revs. Dragon has a proud moment that his son’s bounty is higher and has reached the likeness of his subordinates. So it’s one of those ,”oooo what do you got here???” Proud moments.
Already saw the comment on aristocrat =noble and I think Dragon remembers and saw sabo for sure. My guess dragon wanted to recruit him and he shared a bit more with sabo cuz dragon once was a kid on Goa that probably saw the nobles for who they were, so he sees a lot of himself in sabo.
And dragons eyes being shaded dark I think just represents how serious, angry, and determined he is!

And alot of people who are blind means they lost vision later or its like basically blindness but they can see some objects or some depth but a video of a lady who makes eye contact and was trying to defeat that stigma. If im not mistaken, dragon was seemingly able to read, intepret, and see the picture on the newspaper when sabo was framed for killing cobra. Outside of that though, this theory is airtight. Still may be the case

He doesn't actually say anything about the picture, he just says "we have to wait for the truth" then he takes a backseat to ivankov mostly when it came to getting updates. I combed through that part and there wasn't really anything that confirmed he read it, but alot where ivankov did. Most of what it seemed like dragon "brought up" was like outside context like the holy knights, robin, etc. Very interesting to pick apart
Japanese sword makers whos job it is to look directly into fire to keep it consistent also go blind. It makes me wonder if this theory would mean Dragon is the man marked by flame. In Logtown Dragon saves all the pirates on the island from Smoker's clutches and lets them all escape, if Dragon couldn't see Luffy this makes even more sense, he saved everyone simply for good measure. Now I'm going to combine this with another even crazier theory. If Dragon didn't recognize Luffy in Logtown, that makes Crocomom's theory even better. Both of Luffy's relatives found him and didn't know it was him.
Dragon couldn't see Luffy, and in his head he was just saving some random pirate, a pirate who had a good heart and good intentions and was probably close to his son's age, but he wasn't 100% sure it was his son. Crocodile, despite being able to see, didn't know who Luffy was, as she didn't know the name of Dragon's family (Monkey D.), and for her Luffy was some pirate, who coincidentally had her son's first name (Luffy), and was close to her son's age, but the chances of it being her son were low, so she just almost killed her own son without knowing it.

I feel like something I've come to understand especially because of egghead but just reading odas interviews and sbs is that when it comes to these main characters oda is super detailed. Especially a character like dragon, who is kumas leader. Between how oda handled kuma and the gorosei, I feel like I'm just on the side that oda probably left breadcrumbs for reveals like this with shanks/mihawk/dragon and other characters he has withheld for a long time. Not every one is subscribed to that mentality but I do think dragon will get s tier treatment based on how oda placed him. Plus the point of the vid was to point out that weird inconsistency and see if it exists in other instances to check if it wasn't inconsistent rather just missing info. And so atleast you agree there's some inconsistency there.
Respectfully disagree, he brought up a valid theory and backed it up with plausible explanations. That's how writing a script works. Don't be a snub.

Perhaps he was even pissed he left and had a personal vendetta with him, and by extension ohara (which seems to have a personal connection with dragon. Akainu appeared to be especially cold and ruthless during that flashback. Perhaps it was because it was personal.
