    The Princess Bride movie doesn’t simply remove the book’s framing device. It actually plays off of it to create a new framing device that compliments the book! In the movie the grandfather reads the book to the kid. In the book the kid is grown up and searches for the book only to find his grandfather only read him ‘the good parts’. It’s literally a book-movie combo that deals with adaptation! 😃

      It was his father in the book, not his grandfather.

    • @MarchingGrrl
      @MarchingGrrl Год назад +10

      The way I always saw it was the book involved a man who used to have his father read a heavily abridged version of TPB to him as a child. The book protagonist only realizes that the version he heard was abridged when he tries to give the original book to his own young son and the kid can’t make it past the first chapter.
      I always headcannon Ed that the movie version is what if the book protagonist’s father went directly to his grandkid and skipped the middleman.

      From what I've seen of the trailer and understand about the plot Artemis is a good guy, the Fey are evil and preparing to invade the human world, and Julius Root is being cast as a woman for some diversity points means that they basically ruined the character arcs for both of the lead characters and have turned Artemis Fowl into another generic YA fantasy hero's journey story.

      I don't understand why film directors and studios keep crapping all over their source material, don't they have enough pattern recognition to notice that when a film is adapted loyally from the book, Even when the books are shit(looking at you 50 shades and twilight) they still get big money and are successful, when they don't it is shit most of the time. Are their heads seriously so far up their asses that they can't put 2 and 2 together and figure out that not being book accurate is the biggest detriment to making a big money making franchise

      Well, technically the word 'romance' derives from a French adverb, meaning 'of the Roman style,' which later became translated as 'verse narrative.' The movie kept the basic plot structure. While the movie is bland and boring, it's not the least faithful adaptation out there.
      The only major changes I can think of are reducing Tronjheim into something that looks like Dun Morogh from WoW, making the Imperial Army the main force at the end instead of mind-controlled Urgals, and having Sapphira instead of Eragon get injured in the big fight.
      Eragon's problems as a film exist on a more granular level than its loyalty to the source material: dumb dialogue, uninspired visuals, general sense of no one in the production giving a shit, etc...

    I honestly kind of dislike how they changed where Katniss got the pin, changing it from being from Madge as a symbol of her district and hope of her survival in the games, meanwhile the film just has it that she just got it from Greasy Sae in the shops, just because she thought it looked nice. I prefer the book to the film in that regard. Still fairly accurate.

She was one of the last few to survive and her death started Madges mom on her way to madness. Also, Madge is probably the closes thing katniss jas to a friend othen than Gale. Im not sure if this is just from fanfic, but i think its implied that the girls spend a bit of time together in school. In catching fire, Madge stills some of her moms pain meds to give to Gale after the whiping and if im not mistaken, it is heavily implied that she has a thing for Gale. My personal favorite adaptation has got to be The Lord of the Rings, I adore all 3 movies and i am certainly fond of J.R.R Tolkiens books but they can be so hard to get through at times. I've always thought that his greatest strength was his immensely huge and interesting world building as opposed to his story telling. The movies made a lot of great decisions in what to cut out of the story while keeping a nice balance of interesting and coherent.

    • @brooksboy78
      @brooksboy78 3 года назад +4

      Tolkien's storytelling intentionally mirrors classical epics like "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey" and his characters emulate those found in medieval romances like "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and "King Horn." It isn't written like a modern novel at all nor was it ever meant to be, which is why some readers find it hard to read. The movies are extremely modernized, which is why you probably find them a lot easier to digest. I think Tolkien achieves a level of ancientry and mythic power through his archaic writing style, but it's also nice that other people can experience the story who aren't satisfied by that method of storytelling.

    • @Cailus3542

      @@brooksboy78 Eh. I think that you're giving Tolkien a tad more praise than he deserves, at least for his prose. I enjoy his writing style for the most part, to be sure, but Tolkien did have a distinct tendency to ramble and little concept of pacing or moderation, often becoming so involved with his own world that he didn't account for the reader as much as he perhaps could've. It's one of the (slightly) weaker aspects of an extraordinary work of literature.

    If you ever make a part two to this, I'd love to hear what you thought about the book to film adaptation of Beautiful Creatures. Personally I would rank it very high on the bad list. Same with Vampire Academy. Those were books I l o v e d and the movie felt like a mean high school dramatization of what those books really were. As for Beautiful Creatures... they kinda just threw the book in the trash. One of my all-time favorite movies and books are the Divergent series. The first Divergent film was like someone reading the books to you. I would rank that one extremely high on the best list.

You can see it’s parentage and yet it’s its own creature, absolutely brilliant. I WAS surprised, however, that Interview with the Vampire didn’t make the list, I thought they did a wonderful job adapting the book!
