- Flying with a Firearm and understanding TSA's rules and regulations. Graig Davis of The Neo Mag talks about how to fly with a firearm, understanding the rules and regulations and dealing with TSA, and how to travel and be armed when you arrive at your destination.
Thank you so much for the information brother and getting right to the point.
I've watched my gun cases come down the baggage ramp; I've picked them up in a "special" roped off area, and I've had a airlines representative holding my case and handed it directly to me. IMHO it's a crap shoot when traveling.
Frank I could not agree more with you, same here
Here's a process for Delta Airlines ruclips.net/video/vW2PRylj1qM/видео.html
You can actually have ammo in magazines depending on the airline. It just needs to be in the hard case secured around foam. Done this 10+ on SW. AA mags must be empty.
I’m flying back home, and I initially Felt it may be a hassle, as I’ve never flown with my gun before, but I think I’m going to travel with it for the 1st time
How was it?
@@akeemedwards9706 must be in jail, guess he fucked up 😂
Ive seen that people who have expensive equipment Ie cameras etc, will buy a lower and go this route. It stops from allowing the possibility of loss. More sensitive handling etc.
I have only flew with my handgun a few times and I don't remember emptying the magazines when doing so. I have never had any issues. The last time was about 5 years ago and when I turned in my ticket for the weapon I was not even asked for ID. That is required but someone did not know their job.
As is the case for the majority of TSA agents: not knowing their job.
Does all this stuff apply to just magazines?
LUGGAGE TIPS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
Tie three or four colored ribbons around the handle to your luggage to warn others that this is not their luggage. People grab luggage at the turnstile and take it home before you ever see it.
Anywhere you put your bag, it could be grabbed in error. Example: overhead compartment, unloaded from the bus, at the hotel lobby, at the airport turnstile...
These ribbons make your luggage different and EASY TO SPOT when the piece is surrounded by 35 other cases unloaded from the bus. Using 4 ribbons make it immediately different than other cases with 1 ribbon.
Use 1” wide ribbons 14” long and not longer. Cut the ends at 45 degrees.
Tie the ribbons as a sandwich, as if they were one ribbon. Use a man’s tie, a half Windsor knot for the best look. After it is tied on, the total length of the ribbons will be about 5 inches from the handle. This is too short to catch on anything such as rollers.
Scissor cut trim the ribbons to cascading different lengths after they are tied. Put a drop of Super Glue at the end.
If each ribbon is slightly a different length by 1/4” the color layers will all show up no matter how they drape.
You can see these ribbons from 40 feet away.
Perhaps tie TWO handles or RINGS top and side of the case.
Tie using a HALF WINDSOR KNOT to the metal buckle ring of the handle.
Learn Half Windsor knot tying:
It is the 2nd example in this video
ruclips.net/video/X0yh5rKB9lE/видео.html
This knot does not loosen.
Put your phone number on one ribbon using a fine point permanent Sharpie.
Example: “Owner 454-333-7878”
No personal name necessary.
No address necessary on the ribbon.
Choose one ribbon with an unusual pattern or fabric to really make it unique. The 4th ribbon could be black color.
Stand by the output port of the turnstile to reduce the chance of someone else grabbing your piece.
Tie your skiies, duffel bag, backpack and what ever else with matching ribbons-even your computer case.
If you are a Travel Agent, you could hot gold stamp one ribbon with your name and phone number. Send them a set of ribbons, red and blue and BLACK to your customer as a gift. Record this gift in your database so you don’t duplicate yourself.
Buy a gold hot embossing machine. Gold emboss your business name on the BLACK ribbon. Put the customer’s name on it if possible.
Pleasant color combinations:
Red, white and blue
Chartreuse and purple and orange
Orange and light blue
Orange and yellow
Gray and pink
Green and yellow
Red and Green
Red and Gold
Light blue and light green and white
The 4th ribbon could be white, gray, black, tan
Tip #2 Take a cell phone picture of the ribbon tied on. Then another picture of the full luggage piece. You now have a way to communicate “what it looks like” if someone is tasked with searching for it.
You can show this picture to the searcher or attach a picture to your report for lost luggage.
Take this picture outside in direct sun not under neon lights.
Tip #3 Place a strip of colored duct tape on the inside lining to your case. Put TWO pieces in DIFFERENT places such as INSIDE a pocket to the case. If you dare, put your phone number DIRECTLY ON THE FABRIC Liner of the case WITHOUT USING TAPE. Or, put your name and phone number on this tape. If all identity is stripped from your case, you have this to show. If someone steals it and rips off identity tags, you can show the police officer the inside tape...
To be sneaky about the tape, put your phone number on the STICKY side of the tape. Nothing is on the surface side of this tape.
Tip #4
Put your phone number on a 2” x 1/2” piece of fabric or plastic sheet. Use colored Duct tape, such as black or red or neon, to tape this message to the top side of the handle. This message is under the tape hidden from view. The lettering does not touch the sticky part. Wrap it 2-3 times. Also include Tips 1,2,3 above. If you need to prove identity of the case, just unwrap it and show.
Tip #5 ADDING UNIQUENESS
Use 4 ribbons
Add 1 designer ribbon
colored duct taped handle
stencil SPRAY PAINT a 2 1/2” stencil letter or number or word or your initials to the suit case exterior surface in addition to using all the other ideas here.
Stencil spray paint a letter to the TOP ribbon.
Use ribbons that are wider or more narrow than 1”.
Put a travel sticker on the case.
Tip #6 WEIGH YOUR OWN
Scales accuracy varies at different airports. If you are even 1 pound over, you pay. So, regulate yourself. Found on Ebay, buy a
HAND HELD DIGITAL SCALE
It is less than $15.
Tip #7 GPS TRACKING DEVICE
Duct tape to an inside pocket a GSM GPS Tracking device. Find them on Ebay. Your iphone can tell you where your luggage is.

appreciate it bub!!
this hands down the longest comment I've ever seen.
Don’t they make sure to hand over luggage with guns in them?
Dont put the bullets with the other stuff, They have to see through things and they cant see through lead, so have to open that particular case. If its in a separate box , thats all they wanna see. and declare it ( and you might have to call the air line and and get it added to your booking#) so call and check, and the lock and if they can they stick a pen at the opening.
Imagine they lose your gun. I wonder how much trouble they will get into with the law.
None at all, they just compensate you what the value of your luggage was worth.
Lucky for me I had a $5000 custom gun. Prove me wrong
@@ryanhamstra49as with any lost firearm. You’re going to have to provide the serial number. They’re gonna know your Ruger lcp isn’t worth 5k
@@blazinrounds230 it’s a custom built AR. 👍
Thank you so much!
I never knew you could fly with your gun man it sounds scary by I love it
I was hoping this video and go over what kind of locks you need and what is considered an acceptable and unacceptable hard sided case…
You can have ammunitions in the magazine. TSA made that very clear.
Wrong
@@numberjuan297 sigh... this is from TSA website. "Firearm magazines and ammunition clips, whether loaded or empty, must be securely boxed or included within a hard-sided case containing an unloaded firearm" .
I’ve never unloaded a magazine when flying.
Were you ever asked about if you had a CCW permit?
Thank you! Great video!
Do I need to cut out the foam for the pistol, magazine and ammo ?
Not necessary. Just make sure the ammo is completely separated and the gun has a chamber safety flag. That’s really not necessary but I like to go an extra step to show that I’m being responsible.
Great video
Can i completly dissasemble the firearm and put it in the case and what if i fly in in a redeye do they have someone available to pick it up
How does it work flying in and out of places like New York or Washington DC where pistols are heavily regulated or banned?
Can a 18 year old fly with guns I live in texas and wanted to know if I could fly to Florida with a handgun
I’m flying with a handgun in a a small locked case. It seems a little risky to check the lockbox in it’s own. Can I have the lockbox inside of my checked luggage bag?
Have you tried it yet? I want to travel with my .45 in my checked bag? It’s TSA approved
Is there a limit on the amount of ammo your allowed to bring?
yes 11 pounds.
If I have my portable lifepod safe in my checked bag, should I expect the similar process? Or does the firearm need its own checked bag/case entirely
You CAN put it in a checked bag but the outer bag will need TSA accessible locks. That leaves your firearm more likely to "disappear". If you use an entirely lockable suitcase (Pelican style) you can put your gun in AND your other items. I separate them with guns on top of a foam layer. And you can lock it with non-TSA locks
You're the atf bruh shouldn't you know this 🤔
Nice video are they ask you for ccw or something like that
What if the rifle doesn't use magazines?
Clips can be loaded that’s one of the proper ways to secure them.
This is correct.
Can you travel with high capacity magazines?
I’ve read on the TSA website that magazines can be loaded but must be covered with the magazine clip and can be in your hard cover case. Is this true? Moving states so I don’t wanna get harassed for anything illegal.
You can travel with "high cap magazines" only if you're not going to a state with a high mag ban
I’m guessing you are referring to standard capacity magazines.
Since i cant find anything online is it legal to fly with someone else's gun
Yeah, So long as its not NFA protected and legal in the state you are traveling. I would have a letter from the owner. and a photocopy of their drivers license.
If I don’t have any factory boxes, what should I put the ammunition in?
TSA told me that it has to be in the original ammo boxes, or in a case designed to hold ammo. You can't improvise-they really want the ammo stored properly so that it doesn't rattle around and wind up falling out.
@@victor-charlesscafati your rounds don't have to be in a box, you can keep all your mags loaded. They're clear about that
@@414violence Yes, a mag is fine, that counts as a case designed to hold ammo. What isn't fine is if they are rattling around in a container, or just loose. They're clear about that, too.
@@victor-charlesscafati mags loaded inside the same locked case but no magazine inside the gun. My glock case can fit the gun and 3-4 mags which is good enough for me wherever I'm going
Is there a price?
Do they ask you why you're traveling with it?
Traveling with a firearm requires “consistency and intelligence of the rules from the TSA”
Make sure you don't have a connecting flight where you have to use New York or New Jersey as one of the Legs because the minute you're gunbox touches ground in that airport you will be arrested
Wrong. If you are in compliance with federal law as far as the locked case, etc., that prevails over any possibly contrary state law. Plus as another commenter said, you are not in possession of your checked bag at that point, the airline has custody of it (although temporarily).
What’s the correct amount of ammo? 🤔
Less than 250 Rounds for most airlines.
Do they ever ask for proof of permit?
I've flown numerous times with my guns, they never ask for your permit because you don't need one. All you're doing is transporting the gun. They just have you show them inside the case. That's all
Permit for what? You don’t need a permit to own a firearm in the USA.
i own a handgun in california im currently gonna travel to arkansas i have ny FSC i dont need a ccw to travel ?
Does the locks on the case have to be TSA approved locks?
No but should they need to open it for whatever reason, they will page you and you have to open the locks.
Its doable ive done it but it sucks.
does TSA do background checks?
Yes.
Good, informative video -- right up to the 5:43 mark when the guy starts muzzling his hand with several pistols.
those pistols were cleared and safe, but I get it, you get brownie points
You're the equivalent of a group of guys at a rock concert standing with their arms crossed talking about the guitarists skill and what you could've done better, instead of enjoying the music.

WILL A GUN BAG DO?
No. It has to be a hard sided case.
