@HeavyWings I think there are a number of ways they can do it It's just if they do Tbh could make him an exclusive in a swampy area where the terrain wouldn't be as bad of any issue for him Or having as you said him take after the Mudfish and being able to go into the water and expand his moveset
I personally believe that if Capcom brings Lagiacrus back in a game without water combat they should bring Ivory Lagiacrus not base form, we now have a president with Crimson Glow Valstrax. Plus if it really came down to it Ivory could have it's body lifted slightly off the ground both to work better with more varied terrain and as an explanation for why it is more mobile on land then the base form, this would be a careful balance as one would not want it to look too different.
Everyone says tri/3U's biggest mechanic was underwater combat. Which, while it was their most *advertised* feature. I'd actually argue the biggest feature is part breaks. Not that they exist, but that they *do* something. Lagi is a perfect example. Breaking the back actively makes the fight easier by removing charges. And that mechanic I think is something easily replicated in a risk/rewards fashion that suits him. Other examples are Barrioth's wings/spikes, Brachy's fists, Gobul's light, volvidon's back. Almost every new monster to those games had an impactful part break mechanic. Something seen less and less in later generations outside tail attacks getting shorter. I think that's also why lagi wasn't as interesting a fight. There was no way to really have that risk/reward for the back. You either had 0 risk because it was downed, or you were doing jump attacks, which while risky, nowhere near the risk of swimming up to the back in a 360° movement space. It led to a push and pull mechanic that was always interesting and added layers to the fight.
When it comes to underwater combat returning, I'm open to the idea. The only thing holding it back really is the depth perception issue. This is something that plagued my playthrough of 3U thus far and makes me apprehensive to continue it, with me reaching a breaking point with the style when I reached Ceadeus.
One thing the could do to improve it slightly is the solution implemented in sekiro: when in water combat, the camera will rise above the player, and the field view will increase. Of course, they will also have to implement a better lock-on system, but that would be too OP for the hunters.
To be honest, if the Aquatic combat doesn't return, then I cannot see a feasible way to bring back Normal Lagiacrus with a fun combat in land WITHOUT stripping him of identity. Lagy is supposed to be.... no, he IS the king of the Sea; A monster that can defend himself in land, but that is an apex predator in the water. If Capcom make him more fast and agile, it will be a lightning Mizutsune; if they make him more chunky and lightning oriented, it will be a glorified Khezu (what we got in generations). At the end of the day, It all comes to his Identity as a monster: if they just want to improve what they already have and give him more attack, then just bring back Ivory Lagiacrus, as he's the one specifically adapted to land combat (lore and gameplay wise).
I honestly remember feeling dread, when I got Lagiacrus's encounter in 3u, and I was so pumped afterwards. When I got to fight him, I lost 5 times, but I loved every second of it.
Monster Hunter Tri was my first Monster Hunter Game, and Lagiacrus has always been my favorite monster. Its a shame my friends that have only played world and Rise never got the chance to meet them. I desperately want to see Lagi make a return as a land based fight with all the speed and agility of the newer leviathan type monsters. Be it the Ivory mutation or default Lagi, I want my boy back.
I can definitely say I love lagi, he’s such a great monster and I really do think that he could come back, though id rather it be in a game with improved water combat since that’s where he’s truly king at the end of the day, and I think with the newly found mobility of rise I think it’s possible
7:32 Royal Ludroth was also slightly redesigned to overcome this issue If you compare side by side its animations in Rise and P3rd its tail is a lot higher up and it doesn't swing it horizontally like a fish anymore but instead it points it upward in a still position(wich makes the animation also kinda janky) And it keeps its head upper more often too.
Curently playing 3U, Lagi has always been one of my favourite monsters by design and now I've fallen in love with the fight too. I think it's not that bad of a monster to fight on land (better than Agnaktor at least, to use a similar monster) but it definately needs underwater combat to be a truly incredible fight and not a monster added just because fans ask for it. Hecc I'd go as far as to say Royal Ludroth could really use underwater back too, he's such a different fight from Rise. However I play LBG and I do realize this makes the whole underwater mechanic not as hard for me as melee players, so we'll just have to wait and see I guess.
If i recall they originally planned to have lagiacrus in the wildspire waste, which seems weird. But in fact, the map was originally gonna be a giant marsh, and not a desert map, basically the jyuratodus area but for an entire map.
The Lagiacrus is my one of my favorite Monsters of Monster Hunter Tigrex is the first and then Lagaicrus and then Astlos (I think I might have misplaced his name the lightning Wyvern of the Fated Four)
I remember when i tried to beat Lagiacrus for the first time back in MH3U, i needed so many attempt, in one of them i remember using my bow and spaming arc shot from shore without getting in water cause i was affraid of fighting him in that sea 😭, now afrer hundreads hour spent on the game, i love to fight him underwater as he is one of the most interesting monster for me to fight, and he is my favorite monster. I was kinda disappointed with the Generation and Generation Ultimate Lagiacrus cause well it was just a " Khezu with music ", and i am still sad that we didn't see him once in 5th gen, really hope he'll come back as a good monster in 6th gen
i'm confident that they will have this issue fixed by gen 6, if not in MH6 it will likely be in the portable release. not only is the technology better but there is an alternative to make him work regardless of any software issues. all they'd have to do is the same thing they did to make rajang's animations more realistic in MHW, via motion capture, all it would take it building a single puppet model with the motion capture tech attached to it and having it perform the list of animation within any movesets on each terrain combination. those being staying on flat land, from flat land to slope up/down, moving up/down a ledge, and from a slope to flat land moving up or down. the beauty of this method is that it can be reused as much as needed with any new moves they come up with while the capture data they have can be reused, just like how many monsters alread share a lot of moves within the same skeleton. this would also fix snake wyvens as they work the exact same way so such a shape and animation would fit them too. the best advertising for long time fans would be if they provved that htis pesky skeleton issue was solved so all the beloved monster classifications could be used again, with nothing off limits do to pesky limitations. i'd even venture to say that a snake wyvern flagship would be perfect for MH6 or portable 6th if they fix it. it's been long enough so they should solve this soon, one way or another, whether it's the method i discribed or simply ray tracing. i want underwater combat to be attempted again someday but i'd prefer for 6th gen to solve the skeleton issue first then save underwater for as the bigger risk that is typical of odd gens for 7th gen. there is such amazing potential with marine life for them to use in monster design, both for monsters that are split between land and sea but also some that may be exclusive to underwater combat.
when the modding team for mhw "Resurgence " announced they will make lagiacrus next year, didn't you started realizing that after all, lagiacrus was possible in 5ht gen but capcom decided to not include it for other reasons? i still believe that capcom lied about lagi being impossible because of both fatalis and ludroth being in world and rise respectively... maybe it was time comsuming but definitely not impossible. (4 legged fatalis drags his belly on the ground, has a snake like neck and tail, and multiple modders tested succesfully fatalis outside of the flat map of castle schrade) (ludroth shares the exact same skeleteon of lagiacrus and only few teaks are needed to make him work on the scale of lagi....) in the end of the day, i'm happy rise didn't included lagiacrus since i think it would have been another aoe spammer in a counter focused game and i'll hope mh6 will bring underwater combat; who knows if capcom is taking longer than usual because of them trying with UC again
IMHO, as cool as Lagi is, he was never an exceptional fight mechanically. He was FINE in 3U, an even then Plesioth pulled off the whole underwater-land hybrid fight better. That being said, I do think he should return, but not without underwater combat, because without it, he’s just a bigger, clunkier Zinogre and has no reason to exist in the midst of far more interesting leviathans. Underwater combat kind of sucked back then, but I think it has potential to be brought back and made fun. It’s as simple as not making movement tied to the camera and fixing some weapon movesets. I only think it should come back if no less than half the roster can be fought underwater, or else it’s a waste of time and resources.
Why not just put lagiacrus in flatter areas of maps? Not everything has to be full of slopes and ridges, just a normal, watery, plain surface seems nice enough.
They could base him off of a Cuban crocodile if they brought him back without water combat as they are able to gallop unlike most other crocodiles so are even faster on land than most
@@HeavyWings nah not really, i dont know when it started but a few months back i tried playing 3U but i could barely do the quest when u need to kill a fish that literally doesnt attack back lmaoo, i was really uneasy and anxious to the idea of going underwater.

From my game development knowledge, the animation excuse for not bringing back Lagi in 5th gen is most likely a lie. IK movement implementation used to be CPU intensive around.....2005?
