Didn't see it as a struggle but a lovely childhood being brought up in a village and memories of walking to school everyday on a beautiful island devoid of traffic and tyranny of modern society eg..fast foods etc. My mother used to cook school lunch (Boiled bananas , bele and fish was my favourite) over a fire early morning in her outdoor kitchen.
I doubt if the precious children may be waking up to the same ocean level every morning. Most definitely there’s high and low tide and that’s the struggle that they face every morning.

You really have to give credit to the old folks for settling the villages on the inside of Moturiki facing Ovalau, Making it easier for connecting (reachable by low tide) from Navuti to Yanuca Levu and also strategically for surveillance and help each other during old tribal warfare. Today benefits the people particularly school children and also safe from cyclones as the villages seat within the bay, except for Yanuca Levu village located on the outside facing Gau. Location probably due to huge mangrove forest on the side facing Moturiki.
It's really a struggle for the students to walk along the beach during a low tide it's really challenging. I really felt the tiredness they go through when they are in the classroom. May God bless them.

Yes most migration around the whole of Fiji happened from Yanuca. Just an example of how important this small island was to Fiji is the Tuinimata installs the paramount chief of Moturiki or Ratu, who then installs the Roko Tui Bau the paramount chief of the Kubuna Confederacy. Roko Tui Bau then installs the Vunivalu of Bau. Remember the modern day Roko Tui Bau has not been traditionaly installed because there are no Tuinimata and no Ratu of Moturiki at the moment. When Ratu Cakobau was pressured into accepting Christianity, he announced that only if Ratu of Moturiki do so he will then accept Christianity. The then Ratu passed the buck by saying Tuinimata should accept Christianity first before he will do so. Tuinimata then asks turaga na Rokouli of Navuti for consultation where Christianity was accepted by the people of Navuti. Christianity was accepted on the shores of Navuti village and an extra honour was bestowed on Rokouli where he was also called Matakibau by his carrying the message to Ratu Cakobau that yes Christianity has been accepted in Moturiki. Once Navuti accepted Christianity Tuinimata, Ratu of Moturiki and Rt Cakobau automatically fall in line. Yanuca and Navuti is the key to Fiji's acceptance of Christianity. More later on who left Yanuca and settled around Fiji.
Bula Saniana, apologies that i didnt explained it Well. Gone Turaga Na Tuinimata was a Big Chief And Nasiriva Village (our old village) was his Qalisau (protector) to him. The Paramount Chief of the Island of Moturiki is the Gone Turaga Na Ratu. The Ratu Family had a fallout Where the Son of the Ratu wanted to kill him. The Ratu then asked Nasiriva for help and the two famous twins. When the son came to the chiefly village with his soldiers to kill his father. The two twins from Nasiriva and the soldiers were already there ready to protect The Ratu. Then the Son left again with his soldiers and The Ratu made Nasiriva the Qalisau (protector) for The Ratu Family as Well.
Even though Uraia has clarified your query I believe you wanted to know more about migration out of Yanuca. All the Yavusa Nasau around Fiji went out of Yanuca. There is an old village site called Nasau beside the beach of Vunuku in Yanuca. They left carrying the name Nadau and Vunuku everywhere they go into the Lomaiviti and Lau groups. Some from Moala went up into the Wainibuka area and into the province of Tailevu and Ra. All villages or mataqali or tokatoka named NASAU originated from Nasau in Yanuca. They are people conceded as having special powers or SAU. Everywhere they go they are called Kawa ni Sau. Apart from that there are other old village sites around the island of Yanuca like Naividamu, Drekenivuci, Navatudamu, Nasolo, Wainawaqa, Buca, Nairoko, Delanikoro, Bure and others. This was all inhabited at one time after the original ancient village of Vuniivilevu also called Nakorolevu in Davetalevu sank . People briefly lived around Yanuca Island and Moturiki before dispersing around Fiji. They carried names such as Yanuca and Moturiki even up to Tonga and New Zealand.
The reason why I'm asking about the Tuinimata is that in my village in Kadavu we are called the Tuinimata and our I tokatoka is called Naisaumakiciri Vinaka for the information that you have shared....much appreciated
@@sainianarokotina4220 vinaka vakalevu. There is a possibility of a direct link between Tuinimata in Yanuca and your village but our ancestors don't write so a lot of History has been washed away in time but the names shows links that we have a common ancestors generations ago. Just an example. Dravuni in Kadavu, they are addressed as Tui Vanuakula where also the Tuinimata is their chief. The sunken landmass in Moturiki was also used to be addressed as Vanuakula. Now if you go to Naivitogo or nowadays called Vitogo in Lautoka the Chief's mataqali is called Vanuakula. There is also a mataqali there known as Ketenaratu or in other words Kete-I-Ratu. Well the Tuinimata's chiefly home mound or yavu in Yanuca, Moturiki is called Wai-ni-kete-i-Ratu. These names suggests that they at one time have a common ancestral place before branching out. Vinaka
