  • At its prime, Xuechuan School had around 600 students. Now, the school located in the arid desolated mountains close to Dingxi City, in Gansu Province, is the window to the world of only eight students. Their teachers live in the school during the week, and in such proximity, they become a safe harbor for these children, who mostly come from low-income families and broken homes. How is the life of a country-side teacher? What struggles do these children go through? Come and meet the curious third-grade class in Xuechuan School with CGTN #JobChallenge #teacher #China

I’m South African and I’m currently teaching English in Suzhou, Jiangsu, China. This video is touching. It also opened my eyes to the realities that other teachers and students face in other parts of China. It reminded me that my role goes beyond just teaching but also showing humility. I’ll definitely be showing this video to my students and I hope it reminds them to be grateful for all the fortunes they have in their life.

I am from a poor village in China and I was in the same situation as Xuanxuan in this video. My mom left my family when I was 2 years old because of poverty. And after that, she never called me (actually, there was no phone in my village in the 1990s) not to mentioning visiting me. I even don't know how she looks like although now I am 30 years old. Thanks to the love from my grandparents and some teachers during my growing up, I didn't feel that I lack love when I was a child. The RUclipsr said a teacher can be a rock for those students remaining in villages, I truly understood the feeling. Thanks to my father, grandparents, and teachers, I received a good education. Also thanks Chinese government, I could study overseas with a scholarship from the government. Now I am in the last year of my Ph.D. career in the UK and will be a Dr. soon. Of course, I will return back China after graduating and contribute to the country. Really touched by the video. I love China, my motherland.

M H Believe it or not, this is the real life in China. Remote areas have little to no resources to develop the economy so most of the people left their home and work in big cities as workers, leaving their children to the grandparents. The education for these children is becoming an issue because they are widely spaced in those remote areas. Without the government’s help to build schools like these to put them together, they have no chance of getting any education in their life and therefore no chance to get out. I remember reading a news report about 20-30 years ago that a reporter went to those remote areas and saw a kid about 8 years old helping his family to raise a herd of sheep. The reporter asked him what he would like to do when he grows up, he said to raise more sheep. The reporter then asked what’s next and he said to get married and then have kids. The reporter asked what he would like his children to do. He said he wants them to help him to raise the sheep. That was 20-30 years ago. They have no other choice but to stay in the circle because that’s what their families have been doing for generations.

Sometimes, I got confused by a question: who are more open-minded, the Chinese live in the republic China, or the westerners who live in democratic countries? Poor and rural place where those kids live, they are learning English, they are inspired by the teachers to understand the other side of the world. The latter, despite all the advantage they have, they do not take the least effort to understand the people they tend to criticize without real thinking. Ironic, right?
By saying "westerners", I mean to refer to a small group of people who tend to claim things that are different from their understanding as propaganda. There are so many videos/documentaries showing different aspects of China in RUclips. Do a little research and make your own judgment.

I spent a month there. Its an amazing place. But oftentimes the people have certain stereotypes. Im not even black, Im a tan dude from Pakistan. And a light tan at it. Often times people were intrigued by my goatee. They would literally touch it to see if its real! I know girls who had their breasts poked by other girls as they couldnt believe that it could get that big naturally! Once when I was in Chengdu, I went to an electronics store and they had a stage set up with dancers, etc for some promotion. They called me up on stage and thew me a basketball! I started dribbling the best I could. I grew up in NJ and spent a lot of time on the courts. Point is....they see a darker skinned person and assumed I must play basketball! They were right, but it was still a very stereotypical thing to do, althogh I never experienced any malignant behavior as I often do in the USA. I can almost understand it better if they thought I was a cricket player, but.....
Anyway, if those kinds of innocent ignorances dont bother you, then you would love it in China. I definitely did.

I think the only way to solve this problem is to accelerate the urbanization of these rural areas, and the government should transform money and industries to these areas to affiliate this process, but it seems it might take a quite long time to accomplish it and a generation's sacrifice is inevitable, but as socialism country, we should do much better during this transition.

I have been teaching English to Chinese children online for the past 3 1/2 years, and I have fallen in love with the Chinese people! I watch everything I can to understand more about the country and it’s inhabitants. I am saddened that there is such a drastic difference between life in the cities and rural life. My company had a rural education project at one time, but it did not go well; I truly hope more and more can be done for these children and their families. ❤️

Maybe this teacher can teach (or just talk) to her children on video-Skype every week. It would make the boys so happy and motivate them to do well in English. Please keep in contact with your children Miss ❤

a lot of people in some rural area go to big cities for work beacuse they can earn more money than farming, so they left their child at home and only come home 1 or 2 times per year. it's not easy for those kids.

A glimpse into the tough life in many of China's remote villages and the children who live there. All the talk about democracy and freedom is irrelevant. What they most need is freedom from poverty, hunger, ignorance, hardship and hopelessness. Feudalism failed them. The "democracy" promised by the KMT failed them. Now the poverty alleviation programme is slowly lifting them and offering some hope. But it may be necessary to take them all out of such remote locations if they are to be helped. No one likes to do it or have it done to them. But it may be the best thing.

Well said, my friend. That’s exactly the case in China. Sadly many people from the rich countries resent China trying to lift itself from poverty while Chinese people are still struggling with their impoverished history or reality. That’s why I feel proud of China for each step they’ve made.

so touched by this video, it reminds me of myself who come from the poor village in China as well. to study hard to get into a college is the only way to change our fate and that is true. GAO KAO ,as we said ,is the most fair examination for students in CHINA which is also changed my own life. i got into college through GAO KAO and then got into another college through the master entrance examination and now i studying abroad to enrich my life experience. maybe we put too much emphasis on GAOKAO and when people heard that an examination will determine your future, you might think that is crazy and horrible.however, when one is poor and doesn't have a good family background but you still have a chance to let yourself walk out your poor village and your future may totally different from your parent, you will regard it as the hope of your life and put all your effort to fight for it. that is why education is so important in CHINA. in order to making children get educated and live a better life, many hard decisions parents will make, which leads to left behind children appeared. because of the poverty, mothers left their children. no excuses for those mothers but life sometimes just goes in this way, since life won't wave a magic wand to bring you everything you desired and what left behind chilren can do is though hard-studying to change everything.

Unfortunately this one of the causes of what we called broken homes(we don't have divorce so husband and wife just separate without legal papers).

Very touching piece of documentary!! About ten years ago, through the church I sponsored several students who lived in rural China by sending them money on a semi-annual basis. I wanted to repay society because I grew up very poor in Hong Kong and the church-school helped me. In the past few years, I was told that students receive free education till junior high school even in the rural areas.

To create an ambition, like what do you wish to become when you grow-up, a doctor, a lawyer, a banker, or an engineer, or even as motorcycle/vehicle mechanic, etc. would be good.
