    I just bought a country home and I inherited a 1992 Terry Resort which overall is in great condition bu he washroom ceiling is caved in a bit and also the front master bedroom, so I have to choice but to rip the roof open and see what repairs are required. This time lapse is great as I also plunge into this adventure!

    Just curious but why add the luan over the top of the osb if it wasn't that way from the factory?

    • @NoizyFilmsCollier
      @NoizyFilmsCollier  6 лет назад +20

      Good question, from the factory the rubber is glued to the OSB and when you remove the old rubber it inevitably pulls up chucks of the wood, leaving a jagged surface that can tear the new membrane. Putting the luan over the top leaves a smooth surface to adhere the new membrane to, as well as adds strength and insulation to the roof. Thanks for watching

    • @curtjackson9159
      @curtjackson9159 6 лет назад +7

      @@NoizyFilmsCollier Thanks. Makes perfect sense now. I had someone give me a quote to replace my roof and they said they were going to cover the entire roof with luan. After watching some videos and doing some research I think I will replace the roof myself. Thanks for the video and info.

    • @joecollier9445
      @joecollier9445 5 лет назад +3

      When you pull the old membrane off it tears the wood off the old decking. That will show when you install the new membrane...it will be a rough surface. So it could potentially damage the new membrane. The luan makes for a nice smooth surface and cosmetically pleasing. I hope this helps, thanks for the feedback.

      It depends on the roof material that the manufacturer used, we try to go back with the same stuff, its usually R-13 for the insulation and we typically use 1/8th in Lauan on top of the plywood. A PVC membrane is what we recommend for the rubber replacement.

      First of all no, You cannot apply the liquid rubber directly to the wooden surface. Second, I would advise against the liquid rubber in the first place. Unless you're roof is just beyond repair and or not worth fixing correctly. The problem is once you use the liquid it makes future repairs more difficult and leaks much harder to find, and typically any repair means re-coating the whole roof

      That can change daily and is also dependent on what RV you have, how long it is, and how much is necessary to replace given the damage. I would love to give you a ball park put it's going to vary so much that you really need an estimate done for your specific case. Thanks for your questions!

    Trailers are made with cheapest weakest wood. Why use OSB plywood?? You see what happens when moisture hits it ? Swells and molds. This was a waste of time and money. Real plywood 5/8 is heavy duty. Cost alot money that's why cheap people do it this way with OSB glue chips wood. . this new roof wood will be fine till roof leaks and the same will happen as before. When you renovate or rebuild , it is WISE to over build and make better than before. Other wise your just wase time really.

      doesn't EPDM last like 30 to 50 years though? What would you use instead?

    • @eddiespagetti8395

      @@mikegracia1475 if installed PROPERLY EPDM is great systym. Unfortunately people make mistakes with caulking and sealing around utilities on roof. It's the small stuff but it ends up being cause of water getting into RV. Seams and cut outs along the roof need to be sealed with proper compounds applied. I see many EPDM roofs that leak because someone got up there with caulking or roofing cement and make a mess really make it worse . EPDM is one of best systym for rv IF done properly and even at factory they install it all wrong

      @@mikegracia1475 Thick plywood the thicker the better and that marine plywood is great to use. Costs triple the amount over particle OSB crap board is a joke. Rvs are so weak made so weak unless you customize it yourself with better wood which adds weight but still better than build with osb. People need to check RV scrap yards. Looks like you will be doing this again in year. You need to put weather protection between inner and outer shell! Our class C was thrown together by Thor motorcouch company, had it for five and a half years and the roof rotted. Don't buy anything from Thor motorcouch company, fly by night throw together, no integrity! So good luck with your project.
