      It's easy to underestimate how long it takes for logographic systems to evolve into something else. In China proper they never did; development of phonetic systems was peripheral, a result of the interaction between Chinese logograms and tensional languages, but it is very stable for the Chinese language. Contrast this history with the Cuneiform and Hieroglyphic systems, which evolved phonemic function within the natural evolution of their original languages over the course of one or two millennia -- hieroglyphic being the ultimate origin of Roman.
