On the record sleeve is a still from Peter Hall's highly successful 1974 television film, Akenfield. Its soundtrack was drawn from Tippett's beautiful Corelli Fantasia and that was the first time I heard it in my early twenties. I daresay other viewers at the time would also have been drawn to music they hadn't previously experienced. What a monumental performance by Sir Nev and the ASMF. Goosebumps galore......
Another classic ASMF recording! I wouldn't mind betting that if one were to add up all the rosettes in the Penguin Stereo Guide, the ASMF would be found to have the most and for a very good reason.
The reason being of course because Neville Marriner was one of the finest conductors of his day. A talent that didn’t need the hype given to many lesser artists.
Until this morning, I'd never seen that sleeve with the image from 'Akenfield'. I don't think the entire film is on RUclips (BFI DVD release), but segments like this are - ruclips.net/video/nr3j0EW9USg/видео.html
