140. Foxton Narrowboat Cruise (Part Three) - Tunnel Vision

- Опубликовано: 23 окт 2020
- I continue my journey to Foxton Locks on the Leicester Section of the Grand Union Canal and pass through Husbands Bosworth Tunnel opened in 1813. Does anything go bump in the dark? I finish cruising early, which is just as well, as the heavens open up soon after.

So nice to see some of your viewers giving you a shoutout while cruising along.
It was a nice relaxing cruise today even with the somewhat dreary weather. Our weather hasn’t been terribly pleasant over recent days so it’s nice to hop aboard your boat, albeit virtually, for some lovely views of nature. Looking forward to your next vlog and take care in the meantime.
It's always a pleasure to have contact with viewers of the channel whether in person or by contact of this nature. Our weather is going to worsen now and we have the darker nights to contend with, as we put our clocks back at the weekend, which makes it brighter, earler in the mornings and darker, earlier in the evenings. Keep safe and take care Alan.
You have been round many bends!!!! Great stuff, thanks for uploading the video. Kind regards Mike. Norfolk. 🍻🍻
Many thanks Mike, glad you enjoyed it. All the best Alan
Hi again Alan ,Super vlog as usual with a very relaxing journey for us, but busy for you with all the traffic about. The tug boat HERBERT looked fantastic, my sort of boat.I am keeping my eye open with all the canal videos for a 40ft tug named TOPAZ I had for 4 years with no luck yet. Many thanks, be with you again soon, stay safe Proper Job, BFN.
Many thanks Ron, very kind of you to say. If I see it, I'll let you know. All the best, take care Alan
Hello Alan , I enjoy watching your vlogs, they make me feel like the world isn't such a bad place after all , Thankyou for allowing us to see snippets of your life,,,,,,which is to say , the life of Riley.....lol
If only .... Hi Michael, thanks for watching and commenting, I'm glad you get a feel good factor, that's what it's all about. Cheers
Hi Alan. Thanks for a great vlog. Glad you stopped in time and didn't get wet. Take care 😊👍
Nice of you to say Christine, thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed. I’m always happy not to get wet. Cheers, take care.
Thanks Alan.
My pleasure Rob, all the best Alan
Lovely. And thanks for letting us know the people on that traditional engine driven boat had the RUclips channel "Diary of a Herbert". I have added it to my watch list. They have a very interesting boat and a nice tabby cat too.
Hi Cary. Thanks for watching, I thought the same, an interesting tug style boat. Take care, all the best Alan
Thank You! Very enjoyable.
Glad you enjoyed it Mike, cheers.
thank you
And you, cheers 👍
Hi Alan. Another lovely vlog and a brilliant journey. Very nice to come along with you. Perfect timing to moor up as well just before the rain started. Keep safe and well.
Thank you Shamus, I'm glad you enjoyed it. That was good planning on my part, to avoid the rain. Take care, all the best.
Hi Alan thanks for another great vlog very much enjoyed it, take care keep safe.

I’ll have to post you what we call cheese top rolls next time I buy them, our have chips of bacon on top in the melted cheese. They are yummy fresh. 💙🙋♀️
They sound really lovely Kate, great idea to add flavour. All the best Alan
Thank you for the cruise take care keep safe
My pleasure Helly, keep safe, cheers Alan
If tour round the bend . Its a pity a lot more are not like you. GOOD LUCK.
Many thanks, nice of you to say. All the best Alan
I'd love a poggle..that tunnel was amazing.
.I love vintage engines ..to. you can hear them around the bends lovely 😍
Hi Susan, I use the word 'poddle', which means to move or travel in a leisurely manner. Poggle seems to have various meanings including to muck about, which is also good. I agree with you on the vintage engines.
@@MyNarrowboatVenture Thank you !A new word for me...a scrabble game with an English man would be a interesting endeavor..most enjoyable...😊
Haha you promised me a very dedicated fisherman in your next series and there he is. Many happy hours like that.
The fisherman was sat there in the rain for four and half hours to my knowledge, I've no idea how long he was there before I arrived. All the best Alan
... a nice relaxing vid, thanks ... ;o) ... mb ...
My pleasure, many thanks 👍
Fantastic mix of scenery, weather, and life on the boat. Very relaxing. 👍🏼

I woke up to a miserable day but seeing your blog has brightened my day.
Thanks Alan

Glad you enjoyed it Gail, thanks for watching and supporting the channel. Take care Alan
Oh Herons! We have them on our lake and they do the same thing to me too when trying to get a picture 😂 rather like my Chihuahua does🤣 in all my vlogs. She’s a sullen little thing Callie is. Great shots of all the boats you passed 😃 I’m soon to be working up our video series we just filmed on the Chesapeake Bay and oystering but will likely post in December. Great vlog as usual Alan
Many thanks, hope the editing for your new series goes well. Cheers, all the best Alan
very nice vlog,take care
Many thanks and you👍
Hi Alan
Very enjoyable vlog as usual, thanks. Regarding your scratches, they look to me, from this end, as if they are mainly surface scuffs rather than deep gouges so it would be worth trying to polish them away with T Cut and plenty of elbow grease, or failing that use rubbing compound and not too much elbow grease (over enthusiastic use can mean cutting through top coat !). This could easily save having to repaint. Hope this helps a bit.
Many thanks David. As you say, the scratches are surface scuffs. I think my paintwork is more prone to marking, as it’s not been treated in any way and the surface finish is not that good. I expect next year, I will take my time and try and get a better finish, as I’m learning all the time from tips I get from experienced viewers. I will also research how best to treat it. Another suggestion is to use Ceramic Coating. I'm sure, on a good painted surface that T-Cut would be sufficient but I think I have more work to do before I get to that stage. Hope that makes sense. Cheers, take care Alan.
That was lovely to watch Alan... I must say that I have never been a fan of tunnels... I really don't like them at all. Cheese and salad cream rolls however... now they are one of God's kindest gifts to the world! Stay safe... 🍷🍷
I was a bit daunted when I did my first tunnel but I was pleased to have company. My main concern is hitting the wall when I pass another boat, as I can damage the clips that support my canopy. Glad you share my like for cheese rolls. Take care Alan
I'm hoping that my next trip will be through the Snarestone tunnel which will be my first, not looking forward to it that much and Stevie P has put together some eerie music but I hope that's not an omen. You make it look easy. Thanks Alan take care. Alan
Snarestone is fairly short but it needs to be empty to go through, as one way traffic only. You moor on the right side and it’s difficult to peer through from there. I’m sure you’ll be fine. All the best, keep safe Alan
another great and interesting vlog kept simple and real ,,well done. Kind regards Misty and Me
That's very kind of you to say, good luck with your channel, all the best Alan
Another delightful meander - suitably finished off with a cheese-top bun and cup of tea!
There's no other way to finish a cruise is there! Cheers
Thank you for sharing Alan. Stay safe my friend
Thanks, you too Anthony!
I seem to remember Husband Bosworth Tunnel being full of diesel fumes and a boat looming into my sight , I don't think I even knew it was two way traffic .That looked like a good mooring spot right enough.
It may well have been, if some boats had just passed through, I've not yet found any fumes in a tunnel to take note of though I do recall one weird experience going throuh Braunston Tunnel when it was rather murky.
good video
Glad you enjoyed it.
Enjoyable vlog Alan, those tunnels never look wide enough for two boats to pass must be tricky for wide beams. Thanks again.
I always think that, there’s about 2 feet or 60 cms spare. Wide beams have to book passage in advance and a sentry placed to stop boats entering the tunnel whilst the passage takes place. I also think they have to pass through early in the morning. Cheers
@@MyNarrowboatVenture That's an interesting point and thank you for taking the trouble to reply.
@@rtk3543 My pleasure, cheers.
Lovely journey, thanks for letting us come along with you.
Glad you enjoyed it Darren, good to have you along. Cheers
Thanks for sharing the trip, Alan, and Great timing on your mooring up spot. Glad you were able to beat the rain - I'd hate to see one of your last pair of cheese-topped rolls get soggy on the stern! I'm still learning and making mental notes on which tunnels have which features (one way, two way - rub rails or not - very drippy or fairly dry, etc) in the hope that someday I'll be able to put the information to good use. I do enjoy seeing the folks from multiple channels I watch coming across each other on the canals - very fun to see the front of a tug and say "Wow, that looks like Chris's tug!" and then as the camera pans along a bit to see it was :) I'm hoping the scratches aren't too bad to sort out, and definitely agree having the single color boat makes maintenance more efficient! Thanks as always for taking the time to film, edit, and upload these for us - they're greatly appreciated.
Hi Sean. Many thanks for your comprehensive message and kind remarks, I've been volunteering today at Watford Locks. It's good to have background knowledge but you'll find many things become clearer when cruising. If a tunnel is one way and that tends to be the shorter tunnels, there will be signs up advising that. Some of the longer tunnels, which are one way are managed and you have to book passage. I always enjoy seeing other boat-tubers as well. I'm still trying to improve the paint finish of the boat, so I'm not too bothered about the scratches. All the best Alan
very dull here while I view your latest presentation which was very enjoyable. thank you
Hi Keith, it's dull here too and doesn't look as though it will brighten up. Glad you enjoyed watching. Take care
Another great video - thank you. ‘Rain Alarm’ is a good app for showing what’s happening with rain and to predict the next few hours.
That's very kind of you to say. I have a number of weather apps but have downloaded Rain Alarm as well, thanks, so will see how I get on with it. I find some of these apps a bit too complicated .... for me. Cheers
Thank you, Alan, for a very soothing ride along, even with it being overcast, but coming from a horrible and fraught London where everyone seems to be on edge, so your Vlog was very welcome indeed. All the best and bye for now. Stephen.
Hi Stephen, I'm pleased my videos 'transport' you to a different more engaging environment. Hope you're keeping well, all the best Alan. Take care
How do Alan? thank you very much for taking us with you on your lovely cruise. You are very lucky to have a lifestyle like you have. Yes, you moored up just in time for the rain!! Good,! Just tried a cheese topped roll with cheese, loved it ! Ta ra from Yorkshire. Xx🚤🛥⚓️🚢⛴🛳🥪☕️
Hello Patricia, lovely to hear from you. I'm glad you enjoy watching and supporting my channel, it means a lot to me. As well as cheese topped rolls, you may know I drink Yorkshire Tea. All the very best, take care Alan x
Thank you very much. Xx
Another lovely video Alan. See you next time
Many thanks both, glad you enjoyed it. Cheers
Glad to be inside too Alan, though my flat rather than a narrow boat. I have a cheese topped roll with a bowl of soup to look forward to later. Very warming on a cold, wet blustery day on the South Coast. See you on the next one!
Hi Pam, what more could you want, sounds as though you've got a pleasant day ahead. It'd be nice to get out and get blown about a bit. Perhaps you don't agree. Whatever you do have a good day. Cheers
@@MyNarrowboatVenture No plans to venture out Alan, I have rarely been out since the start of Covid19. I would love a walk along the promenade but meet too many people and it is difficult to keep 2 meters apart. I can always sit at my window and watch others.
@@1950PeeJay Sorry to hear that but it sounds as though you have a good view from where you are. Take care
@@MyNarrowboatVenture To be honest Alan I am happy at home in my own little bubble always have been so isolating isn't a big hardship for me. Yes a good view looking across a greensward to the sea, always someone to watch.
Great vlog as always Alan, I watch a selected few narrow boaters, and as you know I am a veteran of the Royal Navy and the seaman branch at that, I always chuckle at the narrowboating community trying to use nautical terms, but again in the RN we have our own terminology.
As for the heron, many years ago I was on the Norfolk broads with my parents where again my ship steering skills come into good use, however there was one section I was dreading coming out of, and I slipped my lines there was a heron waiting for me, for a fair distance up that section he kept on flying ahead of as to say your ok to carry on, then when the river got wider he simply flew off, I still say to this day he knew and was my navigator up that section of the river.
Thanks Paul, glad you liked it. In the 1960s there was a TV comedy series called Misleading Cases starring Roy Dotrice. One episode in 1967 was called 'Port to Port' and that's when I learnt what side port is, as it was about a flooded road! It's interesting what you say about the heron, as I generally find they fly ahead of you, stop and then fly on again when you approach. All the best Alan
Ok, I was in nappies then, the way we are taught, is the navigation light is red, and “no more port left” as in the drink. Typical RN.
@@elegantinfusions I rather thought you wouldn't know it. Well I've learnt something new today. Cheers
Enjoyed riding along with you for another journey.... I always get excited when I see another Narrowboat that I recognize... I watch Herbert, also.. even though he doesn’t post too frequently. Especially enjoyed the making of your (in)famous cheese topped roll sandwich... carry on.. stay safe.. stay dry💜😷
Thanks that's very kind of you to say. I must say it was a surprise to pass Herbert. I know viewers like to see some domestic activity in the boat, so I thought why not show how I make my cheese topped roll. Take care, all the best Alan
Gday Alan another great vlog and yep the tunnels are not very nice with diesel engine fumes so a good breeze is welcome I think. Stay safe mate and keep up the great informative videos.
Many thanks Garry, I've never really noticed an issue with fumes in tunnels but perhaps I've been lucky. Thanks for watching and your support. All the best Alan
Hi Alan great vlog. We hope in real time your safe and well. Regards Annie & Barry.
I'm keeping well thanks Annie and hope you both are. Take care, all the best Alan

Wow, two youtubers together on the same video.
It is something isn't it, but does happen occasionally. Cheers
Hi Alan, over cast but every day is good when cruising the cut, I think you have got big mice on board looking at the big hole in the cheese,LOL
I hope that Ruth and I are on the cut in 2021. if the regulations are still in place. take care my friend.. John in NEW ZEALAND.. Kai-ors mi. Have you ever thought about having a pet or is it a big NONO? see you
It looks that way John, but it's a ploy to make me think I'm eating less! It'd be great if you could go cruising, especially as next year is not so far off now. I leave pets to others, it's not for me. All the best, take care Alan
Another fab vlog Alan, what is the longest time you have spent navigating a tunnel and is there a tunnel you would never go through, All The Very Best To You, See you on your next trip take care Alan.
Many thanks Mark. The longest tunnel I've been through so far is Braunston Tunnel at 2042 yards. That takes about 30 minutes. The next closest, longer tunnel to me would be Blisworth Tunnel at 3075 yards. I've still to do that one. There is a short tunnel of very limited height, can't recall where without research, that I would be wary of, especially if by myself. All the best, keep safe Alan
Nice vlog Alan just reminded me of where my chimney hood got bent husband bosworth wall another boat coming other way Rammed me into wall why they had to becoming through so fast I still don't know 👍👍
That is annoying, I've never thought of taking my chimney down, I suppose that's because it's on the port side and not at risk. I treated my chimney to a new hood this year, as the other one rotted away and got knocked off. Cheers
@@MyNarrowboatVenture yeah Alan we did that tunnel a few times before never had any bother with chimney always take off now though 👍👍
@@davewhiteley2483 That's the best thing to do, so won't come to any harm.
If possible please use a drone to get a birds eye view of the passing location. You can use follow me feature of the drone. Also the brightness in the tunnel was very low, please use extra light inside tunnel.
I don't have a drone, so can't get any overhead shots. I am trying to give the viewer the impression they are on the boat with me. The tunnels are not lit, so boats pass through in relative darkness, so to over lighten the tunnel would not be appropriate. Also, as a sole boater, steering and filming in the dark is difficult enough without trying to sort out extra lighting. One also has to bear in mind approaching boats, that don't want to be blinded, so it's not that easy. Cheers
Another interesting vlog Alan did you leave your boat the last few days seeing as the scratches are on the starboard side maybe its been scratched by a human hand these days you never know watching you make your sandwich do you know why Emmentaler cheese has holes in it it‘s so that you can pause while eating it have a nice day take care Anne🇨🇭
Hi Anne. The scratches are typical of those you get when brushing against trees/shrubs alongside or growing out of the canal. Well that's an interesting tale, sounds a bit cheesy to me. All the best Alan
Glad to see you made it out of the tunnel unscathed! Lovely cruise even on a cloudy day and a bit of "muck-spreading". Do you think a bit of blue tinted auto wax might buff those scratches out?
Hi Tim, glad you liked the video. I think my paintwork is more prone to scratching, as it’s not been treated in any way. I expect next year, I will take my time and try and get a better surface finish, as I’m learning all the time from tips I get from experienced viewers. I will also research how best to treat it. Someone else has suggested using Ceramic Coating but if I’m going to use it, I want to do so, over a smoother finish than I presently have. Cheers Alan
The Bovines were following the boat that past you, you could say they were COWgoozlers! Sorry i will see myself out.
Excellent, I like it. Cheers David
H O L Y-C H E E S E YUMM SWISS................
It's Em-mental, yummy. Cheers
Hi Alan, a cheese sandwich onboard, that's a new slant ;-) Great vlog again. Were those boats at the wharf as tightly packed as they appeared?
Thanks Ian. I get asked to show food preparation, so making the cheese roll was it. Yes they are tight together but I think they're moored and not lived in but there may be a few, which are. Cheers
Hi Alan, great vlog as always. Thanks for letting us come along. I wanted to ask if you know please, which of your vlogs featured work on your canopy? I am in need of some repairs and seem to remember a fellow moored of yours at Yelvertoft did some work for you, but may be mistaken! Best regards Gareth
Hi Gareth, sorry for the delay in responding only just seen your comment. Many thanks for your kind remark. I did have some work done on my canopy to have an opening window fitted in the windscreen but that wasn't done by a fellow moorer. I took the canopy to Kinver Canopies in Stourbridge for that, as they made it. They also did some small repairs for me. The whole job done at a very reasonable price to my mind. Hope that helps, cheers.
Great vlog as usual Alan, really enjoy your vlogs, saw you had a wall hanging weave on your freezer, was that made by Fran on Floating our Boat ?
Glad you enjoyed watching John, thanks for your comment. You're not the first to ask, but no it's not one of Fran's. Cheers
Hi Alan, hope you are well and Covid safe. Just catching up with your vlogs, very entertaining as usual.
I heard you say you had marked on your Nicholson guide a spot where you moored which I'm sure is something we all try to do.
I do the same but this year I started using an App called "What Three Words"
Not sure if you've heard of it but it is very useful and you can save locations and label it in favourites if you add the name for each canal you travel on. This saves locations to withing a 3m square point.
It also allows you to view using google earth very clear pictures of potential mooring places among canals you are not familiar with, helping you to plan your journeys.
Let me know if you download the App and if you need any help with using it. Regards Mark
Hi Mark, it's great to hear from you, hope you're keeping well, all is fine with me, thanks for asking. Thanks also for your continued support of the channel, it is much appreciated. I downloaded the "What Three Words" app probably over a year ago. I don't use it for anything, I just downloaded it, in case it was handy for letting anyone know where I was in an emergency. I can see that what you suggest makes very good sense and if I think of it, I will try and do the same, so many thanks for that tip. All the very best, take care Alan
Cheese topped roll aside. Are you eating your greens?? Sorry that was the retired nurse in me. Vlogs are so relaxing, can I try the tiller?
Hi Gloria. I don’t eat greens, too sour/bitter for me. Cheese is much tastier! Of course you can try the tiller, so can your cute sister! Take care Alan
👍🙏✝️🕊🙏
Just wondering, as it's raining there, if you'd fixed the cratch board yet?
I fixed the cratch board some while back, thanks. Cheers 😀
How was the new front head lamp ?
That's absolutley fine thanks John. Cheers
What would have happened had another boat come in the tunnel the other way? Would you both have squeezed through? What is the protocol? Thanks.
There's plenty of room for boats to pass, about 2 feet width (60cms). If a tunnel will only take one boat in any direction, there are warning signs, so you know before you enter and this tends to be the shorter tunnels. The long tunnels tend to be made for boats to pass each other. Some of the longer tunnels where that's not possible are managed and if you have a wide beam boat, that has to book in, in advance and a sentry placed at the end to stop other boats entering until it has passed through. Boaters tend to be notified when that's happening. Cheers
@@MyNarrowboatVenture thanks for that. Just trying to glean as much knowledge before my husband and I take the leap!! Hopefully will be one of those giving you a shout out as we go past. 🤞😃
@@debbiecoombes6363 I did a lot of research before I bought my boat, it's very important to get good background knowledge, so am pleased to help. I'll look out for you. Cheers
Hello Alan, a question about tunnels please. Do all tunnels have just one rubbing board always on the left?? If the tunnel is a double width one if you are allowing the boat to pass on your left what protection does your boat have against the tunnel wall? A great video, you seemed to have a lot of boats that day, I would have been the same and allowed them all to pass, too much anxiety having them behind!! Lynette x
Hi Lynette. The tunnels I’ve been through have only had one rubbing board, I can’t say about those I’m not familiar with. It depends on the boat’s direction of travel as to whether it’s on the left or right side. There is no protection if your boat is against the wall other than for fenders. I don’t think it’s wise to have fenders down but many boaters do. I have decided I will use a fender on my right starboard send when passing through, to help prevent the boat touching the tunnel side. Cheers, take care x
@@MyNarrowboatVenture good idea, hope it works when you start cruising again....
@@lynettecoates4272 Thank you 👍
