  • What is the best charcoal. Charcoal Briquettes or Lump. We are doing some tests. In this test we are testing all of the best and most popular formed (briquettes and logs) available in our area. (the Mid-South). We are lighting one pound of charcoal in a charcoal chimney for 17 minutes with two starter cubes. We are adding the fire to four Red Box Smokers at the same time and monitoring their burn rates with our Tappeque Touch. The samples in this test are Royal Oak all natural, Kingsford original, B&B Oak Briquettes, Blues Hog Briquettes, Jealous Devil Max Briquettes, Blues Hog Hog Logs, B&B Competition Charlogs, and Nature Glow Briquettes. There are clear winners. Whether you want to grill or barbecue these results will help you pick the right charcoal for your needs. We will do a lump charcoal test next.

    That sure helps to show how different charcoal can be used to get the desired cooking method or even how some may be better used in different grills.

      I've been really enjoying their lump charcoal in my backwoods chubby 3400. Been running direct heat at about 300 degrees for about 3 hours my last 3 cooks on one full charcoal box. I just close all the dampers and kill the fire when I'm done cooking. Light about a quarter chimney to start it back up next cook and just dump it on top of what was left from last time. Think there is still enough for one more cook.

    Why did you put the tray in backwards with the air hole facing towards the back? Also, would like to see the temps with the water pan filled. Ain’t no way you hit those temps with the water pan filled!

      No water pan. Thus his a charcoal comparison only.

    If you don’t own an insulated Red Box Smoker, you are missing out. This smoker is so versatile and has a short learning curve with Mark’s expertise and videos. I love my Red Box smoker. Cheers!
