Hi loves. Old garden lady here. I have gardened every way possible and about 10 years ago put in some beds like these. You are doing a great job. I probably wouldn't have worried about the liner. Every spring I put in a bag of mushroom manure and top soil to build up what decomposes in the bottom. Bone and blood meal are also fab amendments. But if you don't want animal products, do some exploring regarding comfrey tea. I have a big barrel I make twice a year and water with it. The tomatoes love this! Good luck with it. Gardening is so good for the soul. Just remember, keep having fun with it, don't let it stress you.
I was struggling with depression. Getting outside in the garden soil and planting in the garden food and medicine. (Grow your groceries and medicine!!🙂) It was so good in helping deal with the depression. The sunshine and grounding was key. So glad you’re doing well. It’s good to see you taking charge. 🙌🏻
Same happened to me. A few years back I was displaced from my home do to a sewage accident. Yes we were literally deep in shit, lol. Funny looking back now but it was one of the most challenging times of my life-- and I'm a mother of three. It got so bad i could not sleep. And I would cry randomly at the most weird triggers. Finally my husband forced me to go to the doctor. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Me hell no, I'm the happiest person I know but they did give me this cool medicine 💊 that allowed me to sleep right from the first night I took it-- so my husband convinced me to follow through with therapy that had been recommended. The psychologist suggested a garden bed as part of my therapy. I was living in a trailer, (2yrs) we were by the side of a lake and started my garden. It was the best therapy ever, the sun the caring the exercise and most importantly the peace of mind. Before long I realized I wasn't worried about the house anymore I was worried about the garden beds. And when I began cooking 🍳 with what I grew i was in heaven again. Providing and caring ❤ for my family 👪 I discovered home is where I am with the ones I love, and not a building. 5 years later, I'm back in the house 🏠 still gardening, drug free, and happy. God bless you both and thanks for the videos
I think there is a study about what digging in the dirt does to the human body, other than wreck your nails 😉. There's also a some of research on sugar, processed foods, gluten and inflammatory foods and its relation to depression due to gut inflammation causing inflammation in the brain. We so forget that our bodies are not separate pieces but one organism. Modern humans .. . aren't as smart as we think we are 😉🤗
So good to see you again Bea!!! I love Theo, but missed you. Can I make a suggestion from a "raised bed oldie"? Edge the rim of the metal with either an old garden hose split down one side or an old Firehouse. After a bit the edges get snaggie and sharp and become painful. Next...get both of you good sturdy gloves. Saves the fingers and palms from stickers. Thanks for letting us share your journey!
Pipe insulation is already split and has the sticky glue strip. Or, I've seen others use the pool noodles split so they fit the edge. Saves your arms from scrapes.
No need to line the bottom. You’ll not get weeds at that depth..if you’re concerned use cardboard which will break down and contribute to soil health. Plus doesn’t block beneficial access to worms and microorganisms.
Oh Bea it's soo good to have you back with your beautiful smile and zest. Thank God you are here with us. You are a blessing. I hope you feel the love that was sent your way.
Start a wormery, the best fertilizer ever! And get a chipper to create your own mulch. Gardening and microbes in soil is the best for combating stress and depression. The matured chicken poop in your compost bins will make it even more fertile.
The raised beds look great. For the other bed I wouldn't put the weed membrane on the floor as all the weight of the logs and compost material on top of it could make it more difficult for worms to naturally migrate up into it. Plus the native soil underneath it will help break down the logs more evenly and quicker without the membrane.
Y’all are the hardest working couple on RUclips! Double benefit of hugelkulture- making wonderful garden areas and cleaning up the land! I can’t wait to see Theo pull the first carrot from the garden one day!
It is hard to cut down trees but you are also helping the trees out as you pointed out. I would recommend researching companion planting and square foot gardening to help get the best yield and quality of produce. I had I thought when I saw the logs. If there are any that have a particularly beautiful ring pattern that you like consider saving a small chunk. Then cut it into coasters for inside the barn :) How lovely would it be to put your drink down on a piece of a log from the property. :) Happy planting
Oh Bee, You have done my heart and soul some good seeing you out and about looking healthy and absolutely beautiful. While you were going through your dark time, I as well was going through a dark time and needed professional medical help. It was a very scary time without my family close by and being alone. You are so fortunate to have Theo to take over and he did an amazing job with the videos, however I have missed your sunny smile. Thank you so much for coming back. As for your garden bed you will be sooooo shocked how much it will sink , mine sunk about 60 cm in the first year and it was a very large bed. I am hoping you are going to cap the bed with something like wood, piping whatever, that steel can cut like a razor and deep (Don't ask how I know 🙄). Really looking forward to future videos. God bless 🙏 from the Ottawa Valley, Ontario Canada 🤗🇨🇦
Either buy pool noodles or plumbing pipe insulation and put them on the top edge of the metal sides of the beds . This will keep you from cutting yourself with the sharp edges of the metal. The pool noodles you can just slice down one side with a razor and they work great .
Use black poly irrigation pipe with a cut along it on top of the Corrugated Iron. Lasts longer, very good protection for your hands & you have already bought it.
First, you don’t replace the chain on a chainsaw unless it breaks. You sharpen it. A little site called RUclips has lots of places that show you how. Second, Olive trees are a lot of work. You have to constantly cut those suckers off otherwise they’ll kill the main tree and take over. They go wild which give inferior olives. All those fruit trees need pruning. Do it when they’re dormant or before they start blooming. Farming is hard work.
Wonderful job! I’m an avid gardener and have a few hugelkultur beds. One thing that I wish I’d done years ago is devote a whole bed to asparagus. I don’t know if you like to eat asparagus, but it is very low maintenance and it is a perennial….so you could have asparagus for decades from one year’s planting.
Just ❤️ all the wonderful projects you are both participating in! Much good health & happiness to you Bee, Theo, Gingy bear, & Fernando from our home in 🇨🇦🇵🇹in Canada!
I love seeing how you are making your property work well for you. Just a couple suggestions for the raised bed. A cap around the top to cover the metal edge (mitering the corners) will allow you to lean on it when gardening. On each post, through the cap, you can drill a hole to insert a PVC pipe to go from one side across to the other in an arc. This allows you to cover the bed with plastic to make a mini cold frame or shade cloth if it gets too hot. Using the next size PVC pipe, cut into about 4" +/- lengths gives you clips to attach the plastic or shade cloth in place on the slightly smaller diameter arc. Happy gardening!
Morning Kids! Sharing my story with you. Last year I moved from TX to IN in November. Shorty after (December), I had a trip to the emergency room, then an angiogram, subsequent med changes for hypertension. Ultimately, my physicians said that my life stress from the past few years was making me ill. My wise doctors said, "what do you enjoy doing"? Now, I live by our city forest easement. So I say "I love raking leaves". And, I started. Raked nearly a quarter acre of underbrush, big logs and dead leaves. AMAZING how the exercise made me feel. My 'trick' is to work for an hour or so, rest, and then do a bit more. Over the past 11 months, this all composted down!! I have beautiful soil for my garden this next year. (2022) I didn't build boxes. Instead I built low boxes from old shutters (free). Along all my pathways, I drug/dragged all the large limbs and branches. And ... Kept raking the smaller branches and leaves behind those small barriers. Over 11 months, this has been my stress relief and I have WONDERFUL soil as a result of the daily exercise of raking and picking up sticks. Absolutely LOVE what you are doing! Hint: make small compost heaps around your property...it will compost down quicker - and, make for easier lifting to your big bed later. Oh ya, wear boots and gloves. Ant and spider bites are miserable.Have Fun!!!! It is so worth the work and the wait. fyi, I'm almost 70. 😁❤️U kids.
Good Morning Bec!! It is a good morning here in Canada, seeing your face, lit up in the morning autumn sunshine. So happy for your garden projects and all the progress on the stone house. Kudos to Theo; he is a pointing machine, working til he can't lift his arm up. Love you both so much.
Great to see Bee back in the video's. Loved the shot of the snake climbing the tree, great to see you appreciating the local wildlife. Good luck with everything you do.
I always like to start with good sized rocks in the bottom of large planters for drainage that doesn't compact so much. Love what you're doing. Such fun!
Bee and Theo, I’m so proud of you both for stepping back and prioritizing Bee’s health this year. I know this type of thing is a journey but it makes me so happy to see Bee in the videos and enjoying her chickens and planting beds. Wishing you both the best in your day to day adventures 💕
The work you do is hard, but to have a smile on your face for the labor of love that it is, is all worth it. Bee, it is so nice to see you in front of the camera more, taking charge. Harriet and I (Jim) love you dearly, And Theo is your soulmate. Take good care of each other and the Gingerbear and Fernando. Sending you LOL from Harriet and Jim. Richmond, Va.
That olive wood, when turned on a wood lathe makes the most beautiful bowls you have ever seen, and when they are finished with mineral oil they are food safe, not dishwasher safe.
I definitely “enjoined” it! Lol! Those are the words of a tired gardener! Well done, both of you! I do have a suggestion… PLEASE PLEASE use gloves when doing this. There are so many germs and bugs (and snakes!) that love to live in these environments. Can’t wait to see where this goes!🪚🥦🥬🥒🫑🥑🍆🍅
hello, I wanted to make the suggestion to pick up all the fruits that fall on the ground and put them in the rase beds... they will enrich the compost! You are an inspiration 😍😘
Recommend getting a good pruning book by Christopher Brickell. As you cut off the dead/damaged/diseased limbs on your trees, Christopher's books gives you great details on making sure the live portion of your trees heal properly. His books are my go-to guides on pruning trees. Fruit and non-fruiting trees have different pruning practices, and having the proper cuts will give you many more years of your fruit trees producing a good harvest.
So so nice to see your smiling face back on your videos Bea, gardening is one of the things that has help me with my anxiety and depression along with my two dogs and cat. The veggies and fruit next year will be fabulous.
I have done this same thing. The soil level will drop some each year. I add more leaves and my own compost. Also, use companion planting to keep bugs out of my veggies and it works really well. Marigolds the are beautiful and help keep bugs away plus Basil, rosemary, garlic and onions have a strong smell and you can plant them between your other veggies. I use wind chimes and glittery twirling things to help keep feel and birds off of my stuff. I love my garden and it feels so good when I am eating something that I grew myself. The fresh taste is amazing! I know you are going to enjoy it and have fun.
Start collecting your chicken poop and hold onto it for about 6-9 months in a compost heap (that will give it time to leach the harmful stuff) and then throw it in the bed to ammend your soil. You will have some ROBUST, HEALTHY plants afterward! WELL DONE, YOU TWO! 👏👏👏👏👏
Nothing will be more satisfying than eating your home grown food, especially when there has been so much hard work involved in preparing the raised beds. I look forward to you enjoying the TRUE fruits of your labour xx
You brighten my day. So happy to see your smiling face as you share your time preparing your land together. Keep up the great work. Love and encourage each other. You never know when you will lose your mate. Mine passed away but I have loads of memories from 53.5 years together. God bless.
In February this year I created a new wooden bed 16’ x 4’ that was 3’ tall. I filled it just exactly like you: logs from almond and fruit trees, then twigs, leaf mulch and then compost and soil. I swear the veggies and flowers from this bed were the best in my entire garden all summer long. This bed needed less water then all my other beds, and the soil life was amazing. Only complaint was that my chickens loved it because the worms were so plentiful. Watch out for the girls jumping in for snacks!
Hi Bee you are looking fantastic, your skin and hair are glowing. Your excitement about your raised beds is contagious 😷 would love to get out in my garden but raining heavily, maybe I’ll do some hoeing later, always easier when the soil is damp x
AHHHHH!!!! What a wonderful way to start my week. My 2 favorite youtube people smiling and enjoying life. You are both an inspiration!!! Great to see you back and smiling again!!!! Prayers coming your way from Pennsylvania, USA.
Some of the olive wood could be used for making useful products for the barn - small shelves and how about a nice house sign? Well done guys love watching your journey - take care
Bea it is great to see you and how excited you are.. Theo did a great job while you were taking care of yourself, but I did miss you and your enthusiasm…
Job well done to you both👍, my only tips would be maybe eliminate the bottom layer of weed suppressant fabric, it's most likely not needed as the beds are so deep, weeds from the base won't be an issue, also without that bottom layer of fabric, worms and microbes will find it easier to migrate into your beds. My next tip would be to think of adding a layer of your chicken droppings into your leaf layer (or even with each of the other layers), that will be a great nitrogen source to help balance out all that carbon fill, which will jumpstart the composting process under your future soil and compost layer, which should keep your plants nice and happy. Good luck with it all👌
Bea lovely to see you back on camera☺️ and enthusiastic about building your new vegetable patch. Theo, you are a humble hero and a rock for Bea. We definitely know you are☺️😊. Idea you may want to do is when you’ve done both beds, you can build another as a compost heap and by next Spring you’ll have it ready 😊. You can put egg shells from the chickens, bone meat, worms 🪱 dead leaves, peels from fruit and veg. 🌿🍌🍏🍐🍊🍋🥝🥑🥑🥑🫑🥬🧅🦴🦐🐟🐣🐔😃🌿
I am not sure what timeframe you expect, but we put some small twigs in our compost heap and they are still in tact. Those logs will take 20-30 years to rot down and hardwood may never rot at all. Use the brush and even rotton twigs but use the bigger wood for fuel. PS we are also on central Portugal and we are burning last years cuttings we left them to dry out and the insects have gone, they like only the damp..
Bea remember to look up what plant or herb compliments the vegetable . Example sweet basil next to tomatoes helps with the taste of your tomatoes and is a base ingredient for pesto sauce for your pasta dinner. Garlic is a good companion in a vegetable garden as it nourishes the soil in the beds and repels the insects that attack your veggies. Your veg boxes are going to be stunning and resourceful when finished.
Bea it is absolutely wonderful to see you having so much fun building this vegetable bed. I love how you did it and am thinking I should do that as well. It becoming difficult for me to bend over my regular garden beds. I look forward to watching your videos. The barn/ house is absolutely gorgeous.
I have many hugel boxes and have grown herbs and veggies, for several years. And yesterday made some hugel boxes in my small cattle panel greenhouse to plant for the winter, till my big greenhouse is up. Also I did lined it with the weed fabric. The wood is still breaking down in the older boxes. Has been working for us! I think it is wonderful that you are finally putting together your garden. So excited for you. I love my garden. It makes me happy too! Happy gardening!!!! 🌻
It’s important to prune trees so they can thrive and produce more fruits so don’t feel bad about cutting off all the dead bits. You are doing a huge favor to the trees. Enjoy your new raised beds and all the food the new plants will provide for you.
Aww Bea the satisfaction you must feel clearing the land for your garden. It's all going to be fantastic! You and Theo new farmers . Wonderful job you two are a great team. Take care!👍🥰❤👋
Bee I am so glad to see you happy and working, gardening is such a nice way to be productive and its so nice to see the progress!! So glad you are feeling better!! So nice to see you both working together 😊❤
You guys should totally make a tshirt with a smiling Kubota tractor on it. Maybe Theo smiling alongside it, and B gardening alongside the raised bed. :)
Hi guys ! We are happy to see and hear you again Bea. It’s a great therapy having your garden started. You will get stronger my dear. Tears just filled my eyes literally, having the same issues myself. I do understand. Love conquers all.
So happy to see you Bea. You have such a beautiful spirit. I totally understand how it is to struggle with depression. I ben dealing with it for over half of my life and I am a young 48 years old. I just try to thank the Lord each morning and night for the day. And try top move forward and not backwards somedays it is easier amd some harder. But the only thing i learned is to not give up. God bless you both and to all those who watch you guys. God bless you all.
Brilliant work you too. You might need to cover your compost with cardboard or something , if you aren't planting yet. If you get rain it will wash nutrients away . Happy planting x
Dear Bea, it’s great to see your inspiration and energy for this project it’s gonna be awesome. I live in Spain with a similar climate to yours and we have an allotment business. People come to our land and grow their vegetables. I’m so happy to see you enjoying this and I think you’ll have more veggies than you know what to do with because growing them here is so easy.
Your raised beds look wonderful. You will be able to plant all sorts of vegetables. You both hang in there. Bea, so glad you are doing better now. Love you guys.
Don’t put the membrane on the bottom on the next raised bed as you need all the worms to be able to get in as they are very beneficial in loads of ways…
I enjoy watching your channel so much. I am enlighten to learn new things from you. Continue doing great things in the near future. Much love and success to you both.🙏❤🌄
Wow! That is a lot of hard labor but it is going to be so worth it when you get your first crop of fruits and veggies from it. It's so great to see you both smiling again! 💜
Isn't it awesome to see a dream come to life . Good for you two . So nice to see more of you Bea , your such a sweet heart , you both make my heart sing . We need more sweet people like you two .
Great job it's looking wonderful. One toy Theo and you might like us a wood shredder, we got one last year and I bag up the contents leave it to mature six months and I'm going to use in our woodland corner ands mulch and on top of my raised beds to retain moisture which you will need in hot summer. Its such a great pastime creating and mentioning a garden, so magical picking and eating your home grown foods. Great to see yr garden growing ❤
This brought me back years , as my Nan had every vegetable growing in her Garden and Fruit it was amazing, she only shopped for Fish every Friday the rest was free from her huge Garden , also at the end of this beautiful garden where chickens and a goat . I miss my Nan so much but have amazing memories of living off the land 💚💚 loved your video today guys 💚💚
As you said the initial hard work will definitely payoff in the end. When leaving the garden beds my parents built after 58 years I scooped up a handful of soil to spread some of her ashes and it was the best soil you could ever imagine. The beds provided many fruits, vegetables, and flowers we all enjoyed!
It looks lovely Bee! Theo, your property is getting tidied and Bee's garden beds are getting filled. You're both doing a great job getting those beds ready for forever! Thanks for sharing ❤❤❤
Bee it's great seeing you take over the camera again. Not that Theo was bad but your the best! Happy to see you happy...thank you for another great video. Hope all is well!

The work you do is hard, but to have a smile on your face for the labor of love that it is, is all worth it. Bee, it is so nice to see you in front of the camera more, taking charge. Harriet and I (Jim)
love you dearly, And Theo is your soulmate. Take good care of each other and the Gingerbear and Fernando. Sending you LOL from Harriet and Jim. Richmond, Va.
So good to see Bea back on camera like nothing has happened ❤ I guess her vacation back home did wonders❤
There's that beautiful smile from Bea , Happy to see you back at life and living freely.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Looks like a very productive day there... bea so glade you are back and doing so well... Beautiful as always ❤️
Wow another day of great progress, the raised beds should be very productive. Lovely to see Bea so excited. Blessings to you both 🙏🙏💕💕💕👍👍
Recommend getting a good pruning book by Christopher Brickell.
For sure you guys need a chipper/shredder for mulching. Best investment!
God bless.
How many times did Bea mention how excited she was?? Love how enthusiastic you are for this.
Bee IT is so wonderful to hear you laugh and talk like a chatty cathy! So Happy your better! I've been where you were. GOD BLESS you both!🙏🙏❤❤⛑🥳🍻🇺🇲🇵🇹⛵
I absolutely love seeing Bee on camera. She brightens my spirits every time.
Bea that smile is soooo lovely. Both of you are such a joy to watch. Theo works so hard
and as a couple you brighten up our lives
I do not miss any of your videos. You are the best part of my Sunday morning. I am inspired by the love you show to each other and creating your home
So great to see your smile Bee. You have a great partner in Theo. Stay safe. ❤
Good luck with it all👌
Looking so pretty Bee. ❤️🙏 so glad you are back
Chicken manure turbo charges all the plants in our raised beds and you have a never ending supply. Keep up the great work.
BEE YOU ARE SUCH A DELIGHT TO SEE AND HEAR
Comparing your raised bed to a Lasagne, made my day. Bloody love this channel!
It's unbelievable.... the amount of work both of you do....
Hi from Melville Saskatchewan have a blessed day it’s nice to see you back Bea the duo is back hope everything better with you
So beautiful that the land is giving you everything you need. ♥️
How nice to see Bee featured prominently in the video. Keep going guys.
One of my favourite channels love this and what they are doing stay safe everyone and take care love from Lincolnshire England
It was so good to have you back B and the video was amazing and interesting thankyou
I never comment on Ytube , but it's good to see you back Bea! Your a jewel.
Beee!! It’s fantastic to see you 😍😍
You doing a really great job down there!
All the best 😊
Don’t put the membrane on the bottom on the next raised bed as you need all the worms to be able to get in as they are very beneficial in loads of ways…
So good to see your smiling face Bee! 😍 (a side note-please wear heavy gloves to protect your hands!) ☺️
You both are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place. The colour of the sky. Wow!
Greetings from Chiapas, México. Bee is back! Yay! It's a lot of work to start with, but worth every bit of it. Great progress was made. Good on you!
I enjoy watching your channel so much. I am enlighten to learn new things from you. Continue doing great things in the near future. Much love and success to you both.🙏❤🌄
JAThought, after taking dead branches off healthy trees: paint any branches that are larger than an inch in diameter to keep bugs from entering 😳🥰
You're garden's looking brilliant! Looks like something that even my family could pull off. It's so nice to see you more Bee.
🤗🤗
So great to see you both doing all your projects. You are like pioneers on your land. I enjoy seeing your videos. :)
♥️… I certainly enjoy your adventures…just lovely …😊🌿💕
It looks lovely Bee!
Theo, your property is getting tidied and Bee's garden beds are getting filled.
You're both doing a great job getting those beds ready for forever!
Thanks for sharing ❤❤❤
Bee it's great seeing you take over the camera again. Not that Theo was bad but your the best! Happy to see you happy...thank you for another great video. Hope all is well!
