HERE IT IS- I've been wondering what this video was for decades. When i was seven this video frightened me- the reason was that the Yorkshire Ripper was at his peak then, and in the papers I'd seen a police sketch of a man in black with a black mask. When this was released I saw this on TV, and assumed that the figure behind her was the Yorkshire Ripper, and that she didn't know he was there. Even worse, she was singing 'hammer horror' which I thought would inspire him to attack her with a Hammer. This was all too much, so I ran off yelling I'd just seen the Ripper, convinced a murder was imminent.
Her music seems to be very film inspired. Hounds of Love samples a line from Night of the Demon at the beginning, The Wedding List is apparently inspired by Truffaut's The Bride Wore Black and she says even her first memory of Wuthering Heights was the film and not the book, and I believe The Red Shoes was inspired by the Powell and Pressburger film more than the Hans Christian Anderson story itself or any of its other adaptations.
Most people confuse the two words sexual and sensual - Kate is very sensual in that she is sensitive to many things both within and without on many levels. Sensual is so much broader involving all the senses - being touched emotionally and physically by everything around us in varying degrees whilst sexual refers to pleasure pertaining to sex.
philsskills Yes she is Phil - prior to listening to this song I was watching a video where Kate was being interviewed in the early 90s and the interviewer brought up the 'sexuality' thing and that is when Kate talked about how she regarded herself as sensual as opposed to sexual in the way she portrays herself as an artist.
Lorraine Ashby Yep. I've said elsewhere that the 'sexiest' video ever is the official video to 'Sensual World', and all she takes off is her hat. I love watching her interview videos. Have you seen the one where they constantly interrupt her and paw her aroundfor mikes and hair points, ask her insensitive, incorrect questions and she takes it all with a quiet smile? This is a person who knows who they are, what they are, and what they want to do!
Flo Jo Yes I think I have because I remember thinking how tolerant and polite Kate Bush was for her age. Thanks for your lovely comment Flo Jo. Have a lovely weekend ...Lorraine :)
Lorraine Ashby Kate was always very aware of the difference between sexuality and sensuality, which is just another thing that sets her apart from most other artists.
Lorraine Ashby She trained as a dancer and tried to put the emotion of her music through that genre rather than overt sexuality, I'm also a sucker for Hammer House of Horrors movies
i started listening to Kate Bush in high school, i learned about her when i listened to Angra play Wuthering Heights, she has such a beautiful voice and tells beautiful intricate stories in her works
Growing up with a mom from the U.K. I "suffered" kate bush only to grow to love her AND then she regains celebrity through a popular show. Hell yeah, Kate!
I’m lucky enough to have seen Kate Bush perform this song live. I saw her Lionheart Tour in 1979. I was a Kate Bush fan from the first time I saw her on Top of the Pops. I bought The Kick Inside the following weekend. For me buying an album was a major investment. I didn’t buy many. I did buy Lionheart too. I couldn’t afford to buy all of them. I had a huge poster of her face on my bedroom wall until I left home. When I got married, my wife wouldn’t let me put it up on our bedroom wall.

Her older brother, John, is a photographer that has some stills of her dancing in the backyard when she was a kid. She was simply born to dance. 🙂

I agree this is fantastic. But when it first came out folks like me didn't understand the story the single is telling and thought the whole thing a bit weird! By contrast, when she released "Wow" - that song seemed a stunning return to form after the lukewarm Hammer Horror. But we (the British listening public) were totally wrong to under appreciate Hammer Horror. The song, vocal performance, arrangement, and video dance choreography are all utterly brilliant! For me personally, Hammer Horror is today one my top five favourite Kate Bush songs - where it arguably always belonged!!!
This is my fav Kate Bush vid, so ingenious, can never understand why it wasn't on her best hits album or video compilation! She is certainly one of a kind!
A really catchy and entertaining Kate Bush song that I had years ago, and had completely forgotten about. This unique and mesmerising artist never recorded a bad song, and though one couldn't say this is her best, it is very listenable, and deserves to be better remembered.
GEN X girl here. I was looking up 70s Halloween Music and your are first. OH how i remember my parents having Halloween costumes parties in our Den when I was a kid. I was the DJ at 6 years old and loved Halloween. Still do! This was on her album in 1978.
What a fabulous bridge Hammer Horror has. I haven't really ever checked how many Kate Bush songs have bridges (and I'm not talking burning bridges). My feeling is that she has more often favoured double verses with musical variation inbetween which suit her increasingly 'soundscape' songs like Experiment IV. A distinct bridge, by contrast, suits explicitly theatrical/stage type songs such as Hammer Horror. Please come back on stage to play some of your pre Hounds of Love and piano or rarity songs, Ms Bush, to complement the previous tour. Under the Ivy, for instance, would go down a storm.
Absolutely adore this video for its excellent dance routine and the precision of the movements. Kate's facial expressions and her excellent death scene at the hands of the bad guy makes for a fun video. There is no such thing as 'going overboard' for Kate. Put it all out there and make'em smile.
This was my first exposure to Kate's work back in middle school, and at first I was like 'wtf is this?' but I couldn't stop thinking about it, and kept going back to it, and now I'm obsessed with everything she's done.

The "hammer" reference is to Hammer (Studios) horror movies, so at least you can sleep in peace about that! :-)
lol nice story,,bruv,,as it gose it used to shit me up too when i was a nipper wonderfully weird,,Kate,,ha
Poor timing really lol
I bet Kate would be absolutely made up with your comment if she ever read it!
Great story!
Never Knew She Wrote A Track About One Of The Best Most Splendid British Horror Film Production Companies In England...
There is only 1 songwriter who manages to create an endless, unforgettable atmosphere with every song! She's a true legend!
What an absolute joy of a song and video, I haven’t heard this in years ! Kate bush is AMAZING
She's a national treasure just amazing ❤
One of the two most unique talents in music. The other being David Bowie. And what a dancer!!
Don't forget Bryan Ferry he is totally unique too and one of Kate's and Bowie favourite artist.
@@jackmoore6982 And don´t forget Peter Gabriel.
Let's not forget Peter Gabriel and Brian Ferry! 😉
A genius on the level of Bowie but just not as prolific
I must agree, two of my all time favourite artists, since the late 70s...
I often have to remind myself of how young she was in her career. Such a gifted artist.
2020, more than 40 years have passed and still as fresh, everything about this performance from Kate is perfect 😍
I love her so much 😍
@@luna6093-d6c For 35 years and I was 7 when I listened to her for the first time
@@luna6093-d6c Same here ✌
Yes. Can't believe how fresh they've remained
Can’t explain how she’s literally my biggest inspiration, I love her much
Kate is pure, original, brilliance.
Lorraine Ashby She trained as a dancer and tried to put the emotion of her music through that genre rather than overt sexuality, I'm also a sucker for Hammer House of Horrors movies
she is like a kid, a woman and a fairy tale, all in just one character ^_^
Lol yeah. This is one of my favourites
And a love story.
Well said. I always had a soft spot for Kate Bush and her alter ego's... Plus her songs are pure perfection.
I've got a soft spot for her interview personality, too...
Too bad the freaky creep on stage is just a fraud fake disgusting trick to disguise a child genius too young to exploit without legality
i started listening to Kate Bush in high school, i learned about her when i listened to Angra play Wuthering Heights, she has such a beautiful voice and tells beautiful intricate stories in her works
You watch her videos and you just can't help but smile. AND think, OMG she is GORGEOUS as hell
The complete package. A true entertainer. Her dancing is as unique as her beautiful voice.
Growing up with a mom from the U.K. I "suffered" kate bush only to grow to love her AND then she regains celebrity through a popular show. Hell yeah, Kate!
The greatest artist on this planet!
My monitor can’t hold all this charm!!!
From the perspective of 2024, she's 66 years old... Free info for those stuck in 1978...
@@isobeljames1328 I’d really like to be stuck in 1979. If you know how the other commenters on here are stuck in 1979 yet posting in 2024 tell me how they did it. I want to time travel too 😃
@@SprocketNI'm working on the machin, to send them in 1978 and to stay there and stfu.... And let Kate evolve musically... So there will be only fans who respect her as a songwriter composer PRODUCER, with a discography, rich enough to do what she wants, not to have to sing ad nauseum Wuthering heights.... Fans who don't define or reduce her to a choreo of a 46 years old video...."oh my God, she was so sexy, oh my God, oh my God and slim, and I was young, I wanted to f#k her...." Help!.....
That's the purpose of RUclips, those kind of comments....
At my watch, it's 2024.
Needed to say that.....
We must be of the same vintage.
I saw one of those shows too & did have the "Lionheart" concert merch sweatshirt.
Also had a signed copy of "Lionheart" 👍
I love all of the dancing in Kate's videos. Its so good! So always looks like she's having so much fun!! What a wonderfully strange beautiful talent! All younger generations take note...this is how its done! Love her! 💖💖💖
@MichelleBab-gy2yx We can all thank Kate's mother, Hannah, for being her first dance teacher. Hannah was an Irish dancer that obviously instilled movement as an early art form for Kate. Her older brother, John, is a photographer that has some stills of her dancing in the backyard when she was a kid. She was simply born to dance. 🙂
@@GarthPrice-ej6bt That's so lovely! I was an Irish step dancer too! I love all of Kate's choreography, but the dance for Hammer Horror is my absolute favorite! I just love how she wraps herself around her partner! 🕺💖💖💖💃
@@MichelleBab-gy2yxKate mother Hannah was a nurse.
I love all of your comments. It tells me other people are as amazed by this phenomenal artist as I am. I adore Kate Bush!
amazing. i love the song, the dancing, the theatrics. kate's one of my all-time favorites.
Wonderful and original talent, Kate my best favourite artist❤
What a beautiful angelic voice Kate has.each time I hear her voice I completely tear up from the joy of her music.its so pretty and mesmerizing.and for the lucky guy too hold Kate's 111 pound body so close and throw her around WoW! Kudos too him. I am a fan since 1978 and will always be forever.thank you Kate Bush.
111 pound or 50 kg 😉
How this never got to number 1 i never know? She was absolutely brilliant. No other female preformer since has come close to her talent.
Wuthering heights reached number 1 in numerous countries. Classic surreal/ goth song
@@willowbrooke1215 yeah it did, but Hammer Horror didn't.
The single didn't do so well but the album made it to top ten.
@@occidentadvocate.9759 That's right. "WOW' had more success, but I love this.
2nd video ive seen by Kate Bush, its very good. Im mesmerized by her act, its woken me up to art profoundly
Josepher Castor Also a proficient pianist. Has even played some electric guitar and bass on a later album.
Unfortunately, I didn’t live in that time where Music like that came out, which is really sad. Kate Bush will always be my muse.
The best of her right here, there were many ❤
This is my fav Kate Bush vid, so ingenious, can never understand why it wasn't on her best hits album or video compilation! She is certainly one of a kind!
There is really something very mysterious and magical about Kate Bush. She has always been unspeakably beautiful and beyond talented. 🌹💐
Every single day I find my new favourite Kate Bush song
A really catchy and entertaining Kate Bush song that I had years ago, and had completely forgotten about. This unique and mesmerising artist never recorded a bad song, and though one couldn't say this is her best, it is very listenable, and deserves to be better remembered.
GEN X girl here. I was looking up 70s Halloween Music and your are first. OH how i remember my parents having Halloween costumes parties in our Den when I was a kid. I was the DJ at 6 years old and loved Halloween. Still do! This was on her album in 1978.
There's nothing like Kate Bush
I was 17 when this came out. First time hearing, experiencing this song. 🌟
An absolute gem, one of her best ❤️
the most expressive artist!! dancing and singing..... the expressions in her face are so differents and emotionals..
She's the best
she is so incredibly beautiful in this
I agree! shes rocks!
***** my prefer song is babooska and running up the montain! top!
Belinda Babette yep. idk why but i just see her as an Irish lassie despite the fact she’s an English woman.
yes, kate bush is beautiful,,, she looks like a funny hippie ^^ from the 60`s or 70`s :-) ^^
Yeah! Would love to see Kate's Bush
What a performer! Her movement is mesmerizing.
What a woman. Just incredible
