I really hate how people keep saying Jetset isn’t cel-shaded because to most people cel-shaded is only thick black outlines. Also crazy taxi never tried to be cel shaded.

Yeah Jet Set is still cartoony and super stylish looking, it just... Y'know doesn't look like it's a dreamcast game. Which, much as I love the game's style, isn't even that good looking compared to other toony/anime styled titles on the same console whether made by others or Sega themselves. Like that era of 3d is my personal favorite but compared to like Skies of Arcadia or Power Stone, JSR ain't winning a beauty contest in my eyes lol. I don't have the eye to immediately tell what's cel shaded or not or whatever but i wouldn't argue with you if you told me other dreamcast titles also did that better.
Since ppl complaining love bringing it up in comparison, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk closely follows that older artstyle well though obviously leaning more towards JSRF. But not once did I think while playing bombrush "JSR3 needs to look like this too". I'm glad they're just evolving while not doing a super drastic hyper realistic shift. As for the actual character redesigns, I dig everyone shown so far. Which says a lot considering I'm very VERY mixed on JSRF's redesigns and overall aesthetic compared to original game. This one is looking to keep more in line with the first game's vibe of being a funky punk skating through your hood rather than the grungy and... Well futuristic leaning style of future. Just a classic, chill blue sky in an urban playground.
Edit: also yeah idk why tf ppl added Craxy Taxi to the conversation, that series was very clearly not going for the same style as jsr nor were the actual in game graphics aiming for cartoony beyond actual character designs being goofy. Like it CAN work AMAZINGLY if it did, i wouldnt be mad, but that was never that series identity prior.

The way i see it is that this is a very natural evolution of the "Comic Book" Artstyle the first game has. Back then a comic looking game or film had these thick outlines, like the Ultimate spider-man Game. Now in 2023 we got stuff like Into and Beyond the Spider verse where the style has evolved and is now using image distortion for fake depth of field and dots and lines for the shading, just like the new Jet Set Radio is using. At the end i dont care if some dont like it, i love it and i cant wait

    • @onthedre

If they make the game look like Spiderverse that would be a brilliant way to evolve the way JSR looks while still keeping that creative edge.

I honestly think that the new JSR's direction is actually perfect from the standpoint of where the teams heart lies. The first two games were all about experimentation and expression, so having a sequel that continues to do that shows that the soul that made the first two games so special is still there.

A video interview with the developers of the new JSR was shown on the official Sega channel (Japan), and there was an announcement that the development phase is still in less than prototype progress and that they are currently looking for volunteer developers from around the world. Seeing people using Bomb Rush as a weapon to vandalize the new Jet Set is the same to me as people using Spark the Electric Jester 3 as a weapon against Sonic Frontiers, using a game created inspired by the love the people have on the original IP & games as the opposite, as an weapon, an example of a "superior" version of the OG franchise, is something that must not be cool for those indie devs that created the game as a love latter to the original series

I'd argue that the aesthetic for JSR3 isn't really meant to be Y2K, but Frutiger Aero/Metro (2000s-2010s aesthetic, commonly found in stuff like Windows 7) since that's the successor to Y2K as an aesthetic-based cultural phenomenon. With the inclusion of parkour to the JSR moveset, they could be theming the game's environment and vibes around the 2000s & 2010s.

  • @AdmiralBeat

To be honest, all fans know that cell shading was the graphic identity of the saga, but these new kind of grapichs, even that they're WIP, look so fucking clean, so fresh and adding that the original creators are working again on it, it creates a huge amount of hype to play this new game of JSR. The only thing that i kinda dislike is Beat's jacket, but maybe it's that, a fresher image to my beloved graffiti punk.

its cel shaded, but the models style and proportions dont have that angular, more cartoony look, which is what i think people are trying to articulate about . The only nitpick on art style overall is just missing stylized proportions. Since you noticed the exaggeration with large skates and headphones, even anatomy portions of characters included that worked with limitations. But the new entry’s style is welcoming and what I nitpicked is only just a design concern that can be glazed over, since the point of the game’s were made in their time. But it still ties in with the cel shading and its aesthetic in a more evolved way, that still has this fun, fresh look to it with differences of its style, considering its been two full decades a new entry has been released. So I say it’s neat they’re experimenting, and hoping the gameplay and it’s core mechanics are still retained once we get more trailer reveals. (and it would be nice for a possibility for rereleases of the two previous games come to light if the game is a hit)

i think the issue to me is that the original jet set radio's design philosophy exudes a punk rock energy that's missing here. not in the musical sense but in that ryuta ueda's character designs are kinda funky & ugly, in a charming way. it's sort of why hi-fi rush (a game channeling games like JSR) is a miss for me - the characters are too clean-looking. i would have been fine with a new stylistic approach for the new game if it matched the punk feel of the original. go balls to the wall, totally redesign the characters, make them funky-looking in their own way. instead they just took the original designs, stretched them out, and buffed off all the charm. it feels like the worst kind of compromise. and i get that this is the "safest" route for marketability, but sega sacrificing the game's punk sensibilities so it can make the line go up isn't something i'm a fan of.

So much of jet sets radio’s theme and aesthetic is the time period it released in, including its limited hardware. I do think there is a bit of an overreaction though, it’s still cell shaded and it still looks really cool. I just prefer the og JSR games though.

I like the new style and I kind of think I know why they made it different and that’s to appeal more to the Japanese crowd since Jet set actually did better outside in the west so now they want a style that’s in the middle and can appeal to both markets

It’s important to look back on JSR and JSRF. They were sleeper hits. The gameplay was just OKAY. The style. Top notch. The sound track. Outta this world. Atmosphere was everything. If this game has a thumping ass sound track, captures a piece of counter culture, and handles like 50% as good as any other game, I will be plenty satisfied.

As a sega fan, I understand that having to settls for "Ok" is basically the modus operandi of being one, but it's also "Ok" to be unsatisfied with the new art direction. I don't think "shouldn't look uglier than the one from 20 years ago" is a big ask.

My heart exploded with excitement tears and anticipation when I saw the new JSR pop up during SEGA's announcement and the last thing that was never on my mind was; "Oh wow this style sucks." I really dislike knowing there are upset fans out there not appreciating that SEGA is FINALLY giving us our childhood back and instead are complaining about the changed visuals. Like you mentioned, the ORIGINAL CREATORS ARE BACK and that should be what people focus on, we're getting a game from the creators themselves and they know just how much we loved the first installments, give the updated style a chance guys, the game isn't even out of early development yet!

The new JSR seems like a reasonable evolution of the original art-style. I think they can (and likely will) add some more elements and filters to give it some edge before all is said and done, but I like the higher fidelity. Besides, it points towards potentially bringing something fresher to the table in the wake of BRC. If JSR wasn't changing the art style, I'd be less excited about it at this point because BRC already provided what I wanted from a JSR throwback sequel. Why have two of the same game?

I would have preferred if the new JSR looked like the old one, just with better pokygons and no pixelation (the eyes in even Future looked pretty bad if the camera got up close) the Crazy Taxi argument is stupid though, that wasn't even cel shaded, that was literally just the graphics looking so old that they still looked a little cartoony.

Anyway that style? Just call it Uniqlo-core and move on far and away from it... with us.
Also, yeah. It ISN'T what we or probably anyone likes. I thought that was the point...

One thing i hated about BRCF was the translation to other languages. They just smashed the texts into google translator and done! A LOT of wrong words and literal translations of the slangs that doesn't make any sense in my language. Completely ruined the experience.
I didn't finished the game in English, I just returned it.

I remember like 7-8 months ago, i saw a leak for the new JSR. But seeing the trailer just didn't do anything for me. I feel like the art style is very bland? Like, i dont care for the cel shading, it's just that the artstyle feels generic/ anime-ish/ slightly realistic and has no style to it. We want to be able to grind upside down and do crazy tricks off skyscrapers. Not be held to any type of realism!
But hopefully, when we see more of the game, it will be able to suprice me :)

From what we have been shown of the style, yeah I don't like it. It looks so... bland. So safe. I know JSR and JSRF came out at a different time, but to me this art direction just looks like Sunset Overdrive with a blender toon shader on. It has so very little style when the series is all about style.
