I respect how JSR included Black characters in the game from the get-go, because I know a few Japanese series that are very influenced by Black pop culture but none of the characters are darker than beige. They'd proudly have foreigners and international teams, and all of them would be either White or East Asian.

I love JSRF. Even though I didn't grow up in an environment that could empathize with the culture that it portrayed, JSRF would go on to influence my taste in art and media, even when I went through a bit of a conservative phase. After sorting through my issues and understanding myself and my philosophies a little better, though, my appreciation for JSRF and its message grew even more, and STILL influences my taste in media.

As a simple guy livin in mexico representation of people of color goes diferent: in mexico racism isnt as much as a problem as it is in us, that doesnt mean does not exist, but rather its more diferent, some people migth judge you form time to time but all and all is no a big problem, that say playing videogames or watching movies were black characters apears, you see them in a diferent way, i never saw those character for theyre color but rather for what they are theyre desings, personalities, way of acting, way of confronting problems, i made the concetion with them for what they do, my favorite character in tekken is eddie gordo cux he does capoeira and is a figthing style way diferent than any others, or barret who had a machin gun as his hand, thing like that are what i consider the most when i see representation character, in jet set radio, all of them are from diferent gangs and group yet they choose to join you in your quest cuz some how they belive in what you stand for.

I know this might not matter, but I would say that the games music in JSRF has a bit of asain underground as well with how The Latch Bros. (Beastie Boy side project) sounds to me like hindi, and uses that genre of Bhangra plus Mike D helped a guru produced a song for the guru with mix-master-mike. Furthermore, the use of instruments like a tabla, dholaks and sitars are in their songs for example AI - bottoms up, koto stomp, The answer, master of illusion - Bronx-Bay Bridge and xlarge shoutouts etc. Have those instruments. Good project tho to understand and learn from tho y'all did a good job. 😏👌🏼

This is a topic I have thought about lately. But its also a topic I'm afraid to touch on as I'm just your average white dude and my fear is that because I have no horse in this race I have no place weighing in on it.
However, born in 89 in South Africa, I was molded by the video games, series, movies of the 90s and 2000s from the US, and seeing the world through my own lens (as everyone surely does), seeing things from someone elses point of view, as it would be in this instance, didnt occur to me (at least this broadly) till maybe the past 6 years or so.
I loved Static Shock as kid, it never occured to me that I might not have been the target audience, though I suppose that speaks volumes about the creative team behind that show.
One of my favourite characters in all of Final Fantasy, is Sazh from FF XIII, some folks had reservations about the character, being depicted with an afro, leaning more stereoptypical for some.
My point is, there is a whole host of characters of colour, or characters who are heavily inspired by African American culture that I Iove, but I never considered the level of influence it would have on the demographic it was inspired by or based on, I never considered the cultural impact things could have. Especially when my baseline for characters based on the characters Ive seen in 90 percent of the movies and video games growing up, look like me, It didnt occur to me that characters that dont look like me have a great relevance or impact for many.
I hope I articualted this properly, Its a topic I am relatively new to, and again because this doesnt feel like a topic I should I have a place discussing, its a certainly an interesting one I still am interested in following.

I do respect your support on the love and respect that you give to those characters than not that many people nowadays that are not representative of black descent pretty much go hating against them almost every single time, but I'm surprised I do respect that you give love to them including the people that play Black characters on television as well, which then I watch almost all the time including Everybody Hates Chris, which man that was like a favorite TV show for the mid-2000s during my favorite time to watch but nonetheless I respect on that point as well.

@@RisingSonic17 No sweat brother. This conversation of hip hop has actually been a big topic as of recently because there is a ploy to push us Black Americans from being the creators and innovators of hip hop. The Jamaicans and Puerto Ricans have been both trying to claim credit for the elements of hip hop which all started with a Busta Rhymes and Fat Joe claiming the creation of hip hop was 50 Black American and Caribbean people. Otherwise I loved the Break down you gave for the black characters in JSRF. This was literally my favorite video game growing up. So much so that I still have Jet Grind Radio for dream cast, and two copies of Jet Set radio future ( including the Japanese version) for the original Xbox.

You don’t think the representation is RACIST? I swear y’all millennials and gen z’ers. I like the games and characters but . . . Them lips. And they act too stereotypical. It’s set in JAPAN. Since when did Japan have respectful representation of Black people!? One of my favorite games and franchises but Black representation is always off to me.
