What really sets Dune apart is that it's like attention to detail but to a whole new level; both in terms of the cinematic experience (like audio and visuals), but also in terms of the story itself (the different cultures and the environment and the technology)
In truth, this is absolutely not new in terms of history, it may be partly new in cinema yes, but not in literature. Especially since Herbert created this universe in the 60s. There are so many others today... And there were already some at the time, of course. (Obviously DUNE remains a masterpiece, even among the thousands of other existing stories - and the hundreds of hundreds of stories that are worth it. Herbert knew how to push his thinking and research in every way. Probably even millions of stories. / Authors I have no knowledge of at all, coming from countries somewhat out of the way & whose writings have never been translated, but who nevertheless deserve it x1000. Other masterpieces that we pass by in total ignorance.)
Having Jessica blubbering outside the door and then totally normal two seconds later comes across as an editing problem. Villeneuve did not explain that the Bene Gesserit sisters have rituals for everything, one of which involves “getting it all out” before entering a situation where they wish to remain calm and inscrutable. For example right before Jessica tries to talk to Leto about Paul, she has her “shaking and crying” moment outside the room, and then when she walks into Leto’s presence she appears to be the image of poise and composure. If you didn’t know what she was doing, you would see that scene as poorly edited.
You summed up perfectly why Dune 1 & 2 stands head and shoulders above most action sci-fis. They're both incredibly well made movies with nearly every scene playing a role. It still amuses me no end seeing the haters and the Lynch nostalgia bros trying to claim the new movies have bad CGI, bad acting, no colour, bad writing, they're boring, the fight scenes are bad. Its such pathetic cope 😂 Villeneuve's Dune shows us what happens when studios get out of the director's way and just let em cook!
Yes, the colour-design was so terrible, that in the second movie they used infrared-stock for purely artistic effect. They also had the audacity to pioneer a completely new technique for CGI to allow for a more realistic toning of the scenes.
sound absolutely makes the difference, as someone who re-listens to soundtrack over and over, they are effectively everlasting. the fact that youtube doesnt mind compressing an image to garbage, but the sound still has to be synced and good or else people will be put off (which twitch sucks at and gets commented on a lot).
Great analysis brother dune is modern day cinematic achievement I have respect for James Cameron avatar visuals butdune took it another level and now I wonder why it's storytelling
Jessica's fear with Paul's test had as much to do with her relationship with the Reverend Mother as it did with the test itself. Mohiam had been Jessica's instructor. Jessica had also gone against the direct commands of the BG to give birth to a daughter. Jessica was ranked as a Sister (rank and file member) in the BG and Mohiam was the head of the Order at the time of Dune, so it's like having the Space Pope show up to your house to check out the mess you made after you willingly defied them.

Thousands of years of evolution has honed the human brain into a terrifying pattern recognition machine. Around a third of it is dedicated to deciphering the signals from the optic nerve. Really it's a wonder visual effect artists have managed to trick audiences about anything ever.
sound is as important as the visuals. since these two sensory are just beside our brains, so we registered what we see/hear quite immediately by our brains compared to other senses we got. (that's what i think)
Sound is everything. I mean, literally, sound is everything - on the scale of everything that exists. It embodies a central figure. It is the element at the heart of everything in the universe. (Vibrations, frequencies... Waves, whatever they are, depending on what frequency you choose to look at them, are sound. A gamma ray is just as much sound as, for example, an X-ray. Or a color. Or whatever. Everything is sound.) So starting from there, well in cinema - the 7th art, this form of creation that is so dear to us as a species - in the face of our interpretation and our perceptions, the role of sound turns out to be so crucial. It is just as important in our lives. In any case, it is everything within our existence, it is even us. Sound waves are All That Is. Moreover, some even call the universe, the supreme state of cosmic intelligence located at the heart of all that is & putting everything into operation, Creation, the One, the "nameless", the Great Spirit, divine unity; the Primordial Sound... (The Tibetans, well here we will say mostly Buddhist monks, call this Primordial Sound "Om", or "Aum". The Sanskrit symbol is this: ॐ By the way, if my long comment still interests anyone, know that "Amen" is a Latin derivation of the Sanskrit term that I just mentioned. Thus "Amen" is a direct reference to the Primordial Sound, so "Amen" would mean the heart of Everything. Would even mean All that Is, period. Just everything. And everything IS. Being is Everything. I imagine that the Tibetan meaning of "Amen" is the kind of information that, even in the Vatican, has been lost for a long time, lost alongside the true words and teachings of Jeshua, which have become over time, after being mixed with the pride and stupidity of a few thirsty for power and control and domination, what would be called throughout the world as "religions". Written in books called "sacred", mixing so subtly profound Truths with a terrible collection of bullshit... just what was needed to allow a hold on a mind in search of concreteness and which feels certain things on which it does not know how to put words, strong things (reminding me of a phrase from Antonin Artaud: - "I lack a concordance of words with the minutiae of my states.") but despite everything a mind still too credulous and already conditioned since birth by our models of societies ingrained so far in the depths of our minds.
