The Superspeed Dilemma
Superspeed is is my favorite superpower, but there's a huge problem. A severe lack of consistent speedsters that get a fair share of the spotlight. It seems most of the time, characters with this superpower get cast aside, and the more their powers are used the more we realize how their existence could do more harm than good for the story. But there are ways around this problem, and perhaps we could finally have a grasp at some of that untapped potential.

Astartes is one of the most impressive cinematic animations of all time, rivaling those with multi-million dollar budgets and big production teams. Whats crazy, is it's all done by one person. Today, I want to rewatch and analyze Astartes in order to talk about some details I particularly liked :) Music Used In Order Of First Appearance: Warhammer 40k Darktide - Disposal Unit (Imperium Mix) War...

Tearing Down Hollywood's Worst Obsession

I'm tired of watching Hollywood consistently butcher foreign languages, often using them for quick jokes or a cheap way to show off. It's off-putting, cringeworthy, and often times laughable from the eyes of someone who actually speaks the language. In today's video, I explain why we have to make a change :) Music Credit: SwuM - Swing Silent Partner - Bet On It Music From Infraction: Music from...

The MCU is one of my favorite things to have ever happened in cinema, and seeing it deteriorate so rapidly after endgame is simply sad to see considering how much potential there is for future characters and storylines. Today, we do a comparison between the old and new MCU, mostly focusing on how the scenes are designed to deliver humor, and how drastic the difference in quality and depth is. A...

Dune is one of my favorite science fiction films of all time, with its hyper realism carrying my immersion. But such levels of realism can't just be attained through pure visuals alone, and while the films are hours worth of eye candy, the writing and worldbuilding of this story on top of this level of visual quality is what truly sets it apart. Choosing The Right Perspective

Godzilla x kong is one crazy entertaining movie, but of course it comes with it's drawbacks. One of the greatest aspects however, is that we can now see more of the story from a Titan's point of view. Pacific Rim: A Movie That Won't Get Old
With the understanding that metro man’s speed should’ve destroyed Metrocity, the only reason why he doesn’t must infer that he’s not moving super fast, but he is (in a sense) working with in a speed force.
The problem is consistency Because then you invite the problem of him being able to react to quicksilver, but him in another scene getting hit by someone much slower.
the heck is up with the 90s fart jokes?
so Sonic is simply fast
Coolest Speedster imo is David Martinez, the speed system in Cyberpunk works so well.
The Incredibles was a beloved classic and its STILL underrated
I'm sure somebody already pointed this out, but Quicksilver is actually very low-tempered, that's because he's actually a Perpetual Speedster. He's not a situational Speedster that's just how he's written, according to the lore he is 100% perpetual.
*tighten
Basically neon Genesis Evangeline.
I have my own characters I’ll talk about only two of them. Jack Static is mainly electric based and speed second. He can move at speed if needed and if really necessary move at even higher speeds at a cost being shocked at an ungodly level. Visually he might blip around, normal high speed, or his special move where he goes from light speed to lower speeds very quickly stuttering his movements to mess with his opponent. He is never shown in super react. Now the other guy isn’t shown as a speedster actually their main gimmick is a healing factor that is more effective more damage taken scaling infinitely. His speed normally is like slightly above a athletic man or even a moderate speed. Mr. Nobody has a insane perception speed normally acting like a spider sense but he can tap into it any time. Visually you might see him usually do a grab to slam or just a powerful attack. His body going to a demonic back and white form with eyes pure white. Depending on the enemy the speed shown varies from ruining a more normal character, catching then slamming high speed flying characters, evening the playing speed on some speedsters, or barely dodging insanely high speed characters. I feel proud making them unique but I’m up to creative criticism
I would like more speedsters that are physically capable of going comic book Flash levels of BS fast but have normal reaction and perception so going that fast would basically just end up with them splattered on a wall.
The song change in 4:36, the sentence and Omniman looking at the camera after the sentence, and the way the video changes even if in a little bit of speed or other detail, just admires me. Nice video
My opinion, and one I’ve not seen used correctly. Is a speedster that still follows the laws of physics with a human body. They still have the sped up reaction time cause that makes so many cool scene opportunities, but they can’t punch anyone at super speed without breaking their wrist, they can’t run through things, they can’t stop on a dime. Physics still apply, they just “think” quicker than everyone else, and maybe have some way to propel themselves quicker. But imho, the thing that makes speedsters so cool, isn’t actually the speed, but the “think speed”, reaction time etc, slow mo scenes where they’re in really time or at least thinking in real time. Removing the reaction speed makes them boring (eternals).
The flash was portrayed as a perpetual speedster in one episode of the CW’s flash series. But I think they effectively retconned that because that’s much more difficult to write believably.
They could have the weakness of sloth from fullmetal alchemist. He went so fast that he couldn't turn and just ran into things
Love the scene where Superman shifts his eye to spot The Flash in the Justice league movie. You may already be familiar but the anime, Cyborg 009, has a speedster. There's an entire episode where he is stuck in fast time and has to deal with the loneliness and the strange physics of the situation.
Speedster that builds up speed with time huh!! Well Goku's ultra instinct can be classified in this category.
Bro didn’t talk about sonic at all
The Dune series are my all time favorite books. I've been rereading the original set every few years since I was a teenager . As I've gotten older, I grasp more of the adult nuance that I missed when i was younger. I loved the movies ! Thought they did a great job squeezing what was considered "unfilmable" books into a couple hours. When i saw the 2nd movie, when the credits started rolling and everyone stood up, someone said " Now THAT'S a film " .
is that even writers fault? I mean, is not like they are allowed to write a normal woman, they are forced to make weming stronger, smarter and perfect every time
Super speed is not that good a power. It historically always has a stamina drawback. They usually require a much higher caloric intake just to survive let alone maintain super speed. You have to factor in fatigue. All of these scenes you're using as examples you failed to mention, the speedster is in the heat of battle not 100% healthy hasn't eaten in hours so their super speed is significantly compromised. That's why super speed is mid at best.
The webserial Worm found a good way around this by having the speedster less able to interact with the regular world the faster he went. Punches would feel like a light breeze at top speed and only be exiting his sped up state could he actually do anything.
Metro City versus Mertrocity
So one really interesting take I saw somewhere was that the worlds batman equivalent was a low level perpetual speedster. He was a master martial artist and a genius inverter, but a lot of that was because he was well over 100 years old in subjective time due to living life at something like 5 times speed(I think about 220 subjectively being in his 40s and having gotten his power in his 20's). So he didn't have a week to plan he had over a month, he hadn't spent a decade learning to fight and developing his teck it was like 50 years, also he might not be fast enough to dodge a bullet in flight but you're firing the gun in slow motion gave him plenty of time to move out of the way by the time you had pulled the trigger. The thing was everyone thought of him as being like some mix of batman and iron man and not as a speedster(I think that bit was actually a fairly well hidden secret).
Every time they run they don’t have to go the same speed mfkas be time traveling
I disagree with the Jean Grey point, but only slightly. Apocalypse had that one single display of speed but Jean did have multiple and technically, the quicksilver portion was her second showing of speed. She dodged lightning right before it and deflect lightning with her hands after it. I'd be more annoyed with Jean's thing if was only for quicksilver. Not to mention her "Just Fast" moments, zipping through the atmosphere.
The Superspeed Dilemma is when I watch this video in 2x Playback
How did you make the incredibles dialogue with dash and his mom only come out my right ear
Damn those farys were timed perfectly to not get old and be funny every time
Anyone who loves Star Wars knows that the music makes the movie just as much as the movie makes the movie
7:53 The REAL reason why it works that they can have Tony be a douchebag and we still root for him is because of something I like to call "Writer/Audience Dissonance", or rather, the lack of that thing in Iron Man. Why does Rey come off as a hack know-it-all? Because the writers are trying to tell us to like a character for how smart she is, and we aren't having it. Why does Tony come off as a believeable, likeable character despite being a douche? Because the writers aren't writing a douche and then trying to tell us he's a gentleman. We KNOW he's a douche. The story isn't trying to tell us something different. The writers' intentions are clear. They know he's a douche, we know he's a douche, and we all agree that's not good, even when it is funny. There is no dissonance between the audience's perception of a character and the writers' intentions for the character. With other characters (most commonly the "strong, independent women" characters that plague modern media), the dissonance is strong. The writers are clearly trying to tell us this character is amazing and we should respect them, but when we see how they behave, we feel anything BUT respect for them. There is a strong dissonance between the writers' intentions and the audience's perception of the character. Nobody has a problem with flawed characters. We LIKE flawed characters, as they feel more real and down-to-earth. But nobody likes a character who is clearly flawed, but is being presented to us as an angel. The harder a writer screams "You should like this character!", the less likely audiences will want to like them.
5:50 now I'm NOT defending the star wars sequels, but Rey could know to do what she did because she has been scrapping ships her entire life. even if it's a big contrived stretch of dumbness
I personally feel like Metro-Man is nearly perfect when it comes to something like this. He can choose how fast he moves and perceives stuff and never once goes all out, but when he did finally move at his max capacity he lived out an entire DAY in what was like...a milisecond, I think? He had time to completely rethink his ENTIRE life because of how powerful he was! He was bored, he was too powerful! There was nothing fun in being a superhero anymore! So, as we all know, he faked his death and became.... Music-Man!
In the screenplay im writing, the 'speedster' abilities are telegraphed visibly, so they can still realistically be countered and the character is forced to be clever about the use of his power.
Never stopped being unlikable imo
A few parallels of things in the MCU itself doing this poorly it's the iron heart stuff and black panther's little sister. But a GREAT example of this working is the entirety of Moon girl and devil dinosaur
Or How about a Speedster with limited Power. The Speedster must for Example eat in the Middle of/After his Runs.
momentum needs to be taken into account, you know how hard it is to come at a full stop or to make a turn when you are going very fast, this somehow doesn't seem to apply to those superheroes that have superspeed
Though people hate it, Zack Snyder's Flash did this.
I remember way back when there was an anime called cyborg 009. The main guy was a speedster and one episode he was moving super fast, picked up a pipe, and the pipe got so hot from him holding it that he had to let it go. Literally physics seems like a great balancer imo
No, finding coincidences is not the same as hidden meaning. I am thankful that people make a living out of deep diving videos, but i honestly think if you look hard enough, you will find what you seek true or not. Take from that what you will.
I think the best way is to simply "ONLY" give them super speed. Red Rush sort of shows this, but super speed doesn't mean super strength or super durability, if you punched someone at super speed your arms and wrists would break before you beat someone with actual combat powers. As such, When Quicksilver runs past cap at super speed and punches him at the speed of sound, quicksilver would break his arm on Cap's steel jaw and the cap would barely feel a thing. This necessitates that you beat your opponents with ingenuity and creativity rather than just "run at them at them faster than a bullet and punch." You'd have to make your opponent hit something hard, tire them out, tie them up, etc. If you're actually just normal durability whilst at super speed like Quicksilver and DC's Flash, you could literally just put your hand through someone's chest and instantly kill someone. Put your finger through their skull like Jello and give them an instant lobotomy. This is a fundamental plot hole of these "type 2" speedsters which is rarely addressed. Like how Quicksilver has to brace Magneto's neck to prevent him from getting whiplash, but can push someone's arm into their face in a fraction of a fraction of a second and not tear their arm off.
Clearly you made this after the "UGH" that is The flash...not one mention in this video because.... We understand.
I would love to see a speedster with normal human reflexes, so that it has to plan every move according to physics. Someone that would trip over an obstacle if it just runs fast, or would kill someone instead of saving them if they try to move them (the way Mary Jane died due to the backslash when Spiderman stop her too fast). That would make the character real and not overpowered.
I feel like the ramp up thing has been done in some 90s/00s anime.
I think a speedster whose limitation is fuel would be a great way to balance the logical inconsistencies that come from someone like The Flash or Quicksilver. Normal humans *can* run marathons, but it takes hours and thousands of calories. So a speedster could run 26 miles in a minute, but their muscles and body would necessarily require the same amount of fuel. They could have incredible durability allowing them to punch someone at Mach 2, but to move their arm that fast would cost them an entire extra large McDonalds combo worth of calories. The limit wouldn't be how fast they could run, it would be the size of their fuel tank. It would also lead to some pretty funny situations, where they're straight up guzzling vegetable oil or chowing down on sticks of butter because they need a ton of calories very quickly.
There is an r/nosleep story called “If You’re Armed at the Glenmont Metro, Please Shoot Me.” The premise is that the protagonist took a pill as a drug trial to make money. The pill is supposed to slightly increase your perception of time for a brief period, maybe a couple hours. The protagonist has an adverse reaction, or the drug isn’t properly finished, and the effect seems to worsen over time and not end. When he blinks, eternal darkness for eons. If he gets hurt, say he stubs his toe, the pain is excruciating because he is perceiving all of the pain for an incredibly long period of time while feeling each individual nerve fire off. By the end of the story, he lives billions upon billions of years basically every moment. He doesn’t even have super speed to offset this, so he has to consciously think about every muscle movement for thousands or millions of years on end as he tries to take a single step. At one point he imagines entire universes start and end in his own mind, his own thoughts, just to pass the time. Thus, he is begging to be killed because it is too much, and when he finally comes out of it he is suicidal and beyond depressed and his mind is tormented.
David’s sandevistan from cyberpunk is a good way to balance speedsters and made in heaven is a similar type of speedster you mentioned at the end of
Situational and perpetual speedsters can at least be outsmarted, or forced into an ultimatum where they must slow down. And the “simply fast” speedsters just have to have their lack of a super reaction time taken advantage of, they still can’t dodge a bullet because it’s too fast for them to perceive. But then you have characters like Barry Allen, who is a genius forensics scientist who can oftentimes rival Batman’s detective work. Outsmarting him is nigh impossible.
give us a speedster who doesn't have unlimited stamina. have them have to balance how fast they go with how much stamina they have left
