For those wondering what the intro is a reference to, it's Astartes Part 2 (where the space marines are still flying towards the rebel ship) but from the perspective of the rebel ship.
I would take it one step further. This is the baseline for any media wanted to be taken serious today. If hollywood has untold billions of dollars, years of infurstructure to work with, millions of employees ranging from writing guilds to support in technology and yet produce slop, they will keep losing to talent who make animations like astartes made by one man, in a cave, with a box of scraps! I am more than happy to watch astartes on repeat than any of the new media, with exception of the 40k secert levels episode which is an extension of astartes anyway and the most worth while episode in my opinion.
Luckily GW did the smartest thing they could and hired him. If you look at the credits for the 40k episode of Extra Level you'll see Syama Pedersen listed under the animator credits!
as along time warhammer 40k fan it was an noticable Phenomenon within the community aswel, also worth noting is the creativity of those two "balls" and the wierd creatur you only catch a glimps of, none of that being already established within the lore, but fully "compatible" as sometjing just "previously unknown" by anyone. some warp influences alien creature, demons etc
I was into Warhammer 40k before Astartes, but it just made me delve deeper and deeper into the lore. The passion that the creator of Astartes had for the universe inspired me, and even got me to start reading the novels. Ironically, the Horus Heresy novels re-ignited my love for reading that I'd lost.
I was introduced to 40k universe because of this animation. It was so good, that when I watched it for the first time I was mesmerized like that guadsman in Space marine 2 trailer. "His angels.."
doesn't help the fact that they basically told him "work for us or we sue your ass, also please cease and desist any attempts at making WH40K animations without our approval"
I believe this work was inspired by the god emperor himself. Through this masterpiece I have rejected the chaos gods and embraced the imperial truth. THE EMPEROR PROTECTS!!!
Honestly? ASTARTES is the thing that made me like, or love W40K. I'm no gamer, but I LOVE art, and the themes of the vid is just... thrilling. Excitement just shot through my veins.
The dude is currently making Astartes 2 for GW, Worked on the 40K episode of Secret Level, AND Astartes 1 is still free on Warhammer+, just with music changed for copyright reasons. If anything GW gave this man a career for a property he loves.
It is a fucking masterpiece in every facet. The feeling of weight, the sounds, the fucking AURA the Astartes have. It's just so satisfying. Seeing his recent work under GW gives me some hope. His vision of Space Marines is just spot on.
Old time warhammer fan here, and i was floored by Astartes when i first saw it, doubly so when I realized it was made by just ONE guy. Amazing animation.
Brother, you put Children of the Omnissiah as a background, I’m already stuck to your vid. For me, the 40k universe was something that I fell in love with with the dawn of war series. Astartes finally puts the nail on how the Space Marines fight, how scary they are, the power of their weapons, their armor and speed. Hell, even the Plasma pistol became the way I imagined the weapon working in all media.
one of my favourite stories is called 'The Last Angel' by Proximal flame one of the main characters is red one, an AI, her main enemy is a massive alien empire called the Compact, red one gets into loads of space battles against them, and theyre always tense battles because the Compact do everything right, theyre smart, they try to predict and outsmart their enemy but red one always has a trick up her sleeve, she too does everything right but sometimes, your luck turns to shit and things go wrong and thats why i love that story, its always a good read and the best part, you can read it online for free, i highly recommend it!
A man who made the one best piece of art in his life. A Michelangelo who created great art but made the one piece of his life he'll be remembered for forever. Well done and brilliant piece of just art at its greatest forever
Gw owe this guy alot. I know he was consulted for the Secret level episode. But without the animation, i know i wouldnt of gotten on board the black ship.
YES! Great video, sir. I love rewatching this series to remember how good it is and still sometimes learn new things. It's got that same quality as films like Spiderverse where there's always more to notice and unpack because the big _and_ small picture are both made so darn *good.* This was also, interestingly, my introduction to 40K, and I thought this was the standard form of Astartes, akin to Spartans or Clones. Boy, I was blown away for months as I obsorbed the lore and story and absurdity of this universe... but Astartes remains the peak of it all.
Wonderful video man! Something fun to note too is that the structure that you see in ASTARTES is practically copied into the Secret Level episode but with a completely new rendition. And once again it absolutely slaps!
As a new-er WH40K fan who's fascinated by the Astartes warriors (I'm a big fan of supersoldiers in general, the more screwed up the better), I was surprised that all my buddies already knee-deep in the game told me to go watch this. I did, and was absoltely spellbound by it - few things have captured the action, brutality, and Lovecraftian terror of the 40K world as this has. I can see the influence of it even in that Secret Level episode!
It opened the world of 30-40k to a wider audience, I welcome a broader community to enjoy something I've spent half my life enjoying. Welcome battle brothers to the emperor's rabbit hole
Thanks to you, i finally get to see where the memes are from and also get to experience this wonderful amazing piece of art. Im not a warhammer fan, but i sure am bloody hell interested now.
For all of you that may not know The Astartes realisator was on the Warhammer 40K "Secret level, episode 5" (standalone VOD show similar to Love, Death and Robots) which is also absolutly incredible, go watch it now !!
Syama Pedersen did for WH40K what Otaking did for Star Wars (he made the TIE Fighter animation). Glad to see gw let him out of the Dark Cells for Secret Level.
I was already famailar with Warhammer, but I was interested in the animation itself. The level of detail the cinematography is astounding. On the "god's don't bleed," you can see that The Astartes were well aware that they were dealing with a much more dangerous enemy, hence them setting up for a ambush and that they are not invincible despite them being augmented soldiers. When he was "caught," that Astertes was trying to drive a knife into that cult leader since his blade was shuddering, they will not give up that easy. I was looking forward to more of his work.
I agree cuz I was one of them. I squealed in joy once I saw his name in the Warhammer episode in Secret Level. Also, there is dialog, you just never hear them properly (Inquisition Psyker and the two orbs).
7:50 will note here that that scene in particular was Artistic License as that weapon is quite capable of killing a Space Marine. That aside Astartes is the Gold Standard. It took "And They Shall Know No Fear" to give us something on the same level, and Astartes' influence is all over it (literally, Pedersen was one of the Layout Artists).
I'll just add one of those details that some watchers miss. The Retributor ship has already captured at least two rebel demons. They clearly have one and it is held, probably using its link with the other ship's orb to get nearer and launch the assault. However, in the background is a dead orb in chains. You can imagine whatever you want as to why it is dead...
Back during lockdown when all 5 parts were released, I was watching corridor crew when they reacted to all 5 parts of Astartes and after I found out the name I went straight to watch all 5 parts which then lead me to dig even deeper into the universe of 40k, never looked back after that
Was already very interested in WH40k and had read a bunch of wikis and watched videos, but after I saw Astartes by Syama Pederson I was all in lol. I've read 30+ books now in the past 1.5yrs and will probably end up getting minis RIP xD Btw this is such an awesome breakdown of why the Astartes series is so compelling, I intuitively grasped all the things you mentioned but hadn't analysed it like that. really cool video! c: There are sooo many other things I HAVE thought about and analysed though, as you said there are SO many details to get into. Pederson really is a genius IMO, I hope they're treating him well in the GW sweatshop he's locked up in lmfao. Also little footnote: Pederson's faithfulness to the setting is also incredibly admirable considering how many other elements he must have been grappling with, but I think that was one of his main priorities so mad respect. So happy the retributors were added as a skin in Space Marine 2!
I had been aware of 40K for decades. But those squat looking minis didn't appeal to me enough to make me want to look into it any further. The final Astartes episode threw me down the rabbit hole. I watched Leutin's "WTF is Warhammer 40K". Then I learned the Primaris minis were a thing and more anatomically correct. I'm big into the painting and lore side of the hobby. I've listened to the entire Horus Heresy on Audible as well as other titles like Eisenhorn, Gaunt's Ghosts, Ciaphas Cain etc and I haven't looked back since. Loving it.
My introduction to Warhammer was Flashgitz Furry Crusade series. Seeing a Black Templar mercilessly beating a furry in the Name of the God Emperor was enough to drag me down that warp rift.
I watched Astartes for the first time after seeing bits of it on Corridor Digital four years ago. Ever since then I’ve been hooked, and I can’t let go.
My favorite part about the Psyker fight is that everything is intentional. The Astartes sending out a blanket of bolter rounds, going on both sides, it’s not just an ambush, it was a distraction so that another Astartes could get closer to attack.
Was fortunate enough to hear about it from the second episode and, damn... hit me like a baseball bat to the head. Was already into the Warhammer universe, but this made me like it even more. And just one dude made it? Impressive. Everything was perfect in it. The fact not a single word was spoken - except what the chaos thingie is saying - made it even greater. And - finally - a cinematic where the Astartes are portrayed as having speed and agility, not just shown as big and bulky, slow-moving juggernauts. I heard Syama works more and more with GW and even helped in making the Warhammer episode, for Amazon - and you can tell. I shall watch his career with great interest.
And they decided instead of enjoying the free advertisement from the rapid spreading of the greatest video ambassador to Warhammer 40,000 they rather scrub it from youtube. Insane short sightedness that shows where this company is heading for.
Me before astartes, 5 years ago: Warhammer really doesn’t seem like my style, I’ll probably never be interested in it. Me after astartes: ok that was pretty cool, I guess I’ll look more into it, but just like the space marine stuff. And that’s how the rabbit hole began
I got interested after watching some of Bricky's videos on Wh40k, but after that i watched a lot of official and fan made cinematics and animations and kinda sealed the deal for me.
"The soldiers did everything right, and *still* lost." That reminds me of the Star Wars Visions episode, The Duel. Jedi and Sith are a known quantity, and you hear people recognize them and yell things like "Don't let her close the distance!" and "Surround her!" They're not stupid, they know how to fight a psychic space wizard with a laser sword. And they lose anyway. Because tactics and strategy can only do so much against a psychic wizard with a laser sword who can also toss people around with her mind. I feel like many people don't understand this about trained Force-wielders (which also applies to Space Marines, IRL tanks, etc.) - yes, there are ways to beat them, no system is invincible. But you need specialized tactics to beat them, whereas they don't need fancy tactics to beat you. And there's nothing stopping them from reading your book and defending against their counters.
Short explanation to the phenomenon: artistic projects made by a single, extremely talented and inspired person tend to be masterpieces, able to move people years and years after even the author's departure. The more people get involved in a project, the more that project tends to suck.
The thing with Astartes is that it doesn't hold back, the original creator took a gamble of not only committing his full time effort to creating it but using copy righted music to enhance the experience. Additionally, it doesn't feel constrained like a lot of Warhammer's official animations, they don't feel forced to be something it wasn't planned to be, it doesn't feel like a story that got compressed to be underwhelming and shortly handled. The reason why both it and Helsreach have higher user reviews on the likes of IMDB than Warhammer +'s official works is because that passion wasn't constrained, it was allowed to breath by its creators and directors and tell a story comfortably with clear cinematic direction that does what I feel the likes of Mechanicus and Rogue Trader did best, respect the interest of existing fans, respect the curiosity of those who are new to it to entice them whilst wondering why the fans are pretty much having the time of their life over watching it.
This Mini Series pushed me in the Hobby. I wanted to know who was fighting, why are they fighting… at First an analysation of astartes than a lore Video than another and another and another… a week later i visited a gw. She sold me a couple paints and gifted me marine this was 2-3 monthes before 9th. Today i have 5k pts marines same if not more csm (thanks ADB (ave dominus nox)), two knights + 6-8 wardogs, a cp of tau, some admech, audiobooks for weeks to listen and now my coworkers talked me into aos 4th. And the start was this 5 Little Videos. Funny Note i played maybe 3-4 times but its the lore and hobbying that floats my boat :)
Secret Level WH40K (which I absolutely liked) won't exist without this. This is the "almost perfect" template - the bar set that will judge any WH40K action sequences and stories to be produced next.
"Astartes" video and "Children of the Omnissiah" from the Mechanicus soundtrack are the very best things that are related to wh40k! Black Templars are distant third! :) Btw, find really, really good headset to listen to it, at least once! It is something else!
Yup. I had passing interest back in the day when dawn of war ii came out and then ignored it for years. When I stumbled upon Astartes (very late) I spent weeks and months watching nothing but 40k videos and now I have almost 800 hours in Space Marine 2
You see them rejoin the rest of the squad after the two who took down the psykers sheath their knives and the camera switches to an overhead view as they walk towards the vault door.
The biggest problem with Astartes is the you end up *yearning* for more warhammer that's even a fraction as good as it. And that didn't happen until Secret Level, and even then I'd say it was only 80% as good.
Honestly I think the "Astartes" animation was better than the Secret Level episode, but I didn't have any expectetion, and the Secret Level I though would work Titus Story more, they just said "Titus was already badass when he was a kid".
Astartes... I loved the animation. I get why the creator ended up selling out to Games Workshop. But that was kinda the start of a crackdown that ended up catching "If the Emperor had a Text to Speech Device" in the crossfire. Alfabusa's show got me into 40k, and seeing it get shut down killed a lot of my interest and got me into other tabletops instead. I think GW seems to be easing off, and I hope to see more fan animations in the future, but by the emperor did they give the fanbase the finger.
"Selling out" is pretty disrespectfull, he found a job, manny of the people that gw absorbed have worked on shows like periah and secret level. Not on board with them getting rid of creators, it was scummy all the same, but i'm glad we are seing some real high grade stuff coming out like secret level, I hope it is the standard and not the exeption
You would have a lot more Fan animations like Astartes, but Games Workshop threatened to sue any fans who made unauthorized 40K fan animations. I have never seen such a horrible reaction from a company to its fans who love the work. Threatening to sue and legal action for fan animations is so awful.
I thought you were going to talk about how after this he was snatched by games workshop and the company then threatened legal action against anyone that made fan animations like it.
The one thing I don't get with Astartes though, what was that glass shattering when they first walk into the vault? I just took it as a foreshadowing, but maybe it had some other meaning?
I thought it was just ice/frost on the floor cracking. Either the room was freezing to keep the orb stable or some minor effect of the warp encroaching on realspace.
For those wondering what the intro is a reference to, it's Astartes Part 2 (where the space marines are still flying towards the rebel ship) but from the perspective of the rebel ship.

Daddy Nurgle welcomes all, baby! Come, we have lore galore and papa Nurgs loves all
I had never heard of Warhammer before Astartes. Now I’m watching 40k lore everyday and halfway finished reading Eisenhorn
OH MY GOD HES DOING WARHAMMER LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
1:28 the only true contender against Astartes now is the Secret Level episode and even then I still have a soft spot for Astartes 😂
The guy Syama Pedersen himself worked also on that episode, he is in the credits
Me before astartes, 5 years ago: Warhammer really doesn’t seem like my style, I’ll probably never be interested in it. Me after astartes: ok that was pretty cool, I guess I’ll look more into it, but just like the space marine stuff. And that’s how the rabbit hole began
I do not know if Pedersen is blessed by the Omnissiah or an agent of the Inquisition. What I do know is he's doing the work of the God Emperor.
I got interested after watching some of Bricky's videos on Wh40k, but after that i watched a lot of official and fan made cinematics and animations and kinda sealed the deal for me.
Next we need an Emperor TTS video 🙏🙏🙏
"The soldiers did everything right, and *still* lost."
That reminds me of the Star Wars Visions episode, The Duel.
The reason why both it and Helsreach have higher user reviews on the likes of IMDB than Warhammer +'s official works is because that passion wasn't constrained, it was allowed to breath by its creators and directors and tell a story comfortably with clear cinematic direction that does what I feel the likes of Mechanicus and Rogue Trader did best, respect the interest of existing fans, respect the curiosity of those who are new to it to entice them whilst wondering why the fans are pretty much having the time of their life over watching it.
i feel proud when the astartes warhammer theme start playing.
Fantastic deconstruction and analysis 🎉
The plasma bolt through the smoke is hands down the most awesome scene in the whole film.
Full stop, call it a day.
I mean autocannon and multilaser moments were bit lucky/plot armory for marines, but yeah, absolutely legendary animation
Marines just rolled well on their armor saves
Well, time to watch Astartes again...
It happened to my dad and nows he's totally gone insane for warhammer.
The Astartes animation is too good to be true.
"Astartes" video and "Children of the Omnissiah" from the Mechanicus soundtrack are the very best things that are related to wh40k! Black Templars are distant third! :)
Btw, find really, really good headset to listen to it, at least once! It is something else!
Yup. I had passing interest back in the day when dawn of war ii came out and then ignored it for years. When I stumbled upon Astartes (very late) I spent weeks and months watching nothing but 40k videos and now I have almost 800 hours in Space Marine 2
No casualties? I thought that the two Marines on the catwalk got vaporized my that psyker.
I think they made it out just fine. I'm pretty sure only 5 space marines boarded the ship and all 5 can be seen after the fight is over
They walked it off right after, Just got pushed away thats all
You see them rejoin the rest of the squad after the two who took down the psykers sheath their knives and the camera switches to an overhead view as they walk towards the vault door.
I watched it, again. its too good.
The Emperor's finest!
Astartes look like cylons, except they don’t miss and love what they are doing
Simple quality is priceless
Astartes a.k.a. Thee BAR🌟
I see the heresy green color in this video!
Astartes video made me intereste to WarHammer 40K and i have no regret FOR THE EMPEROR.
The crazy thing is that Alfabusa didn't even receive any kind of notices from GW. He just got spooked and ended the project.
TTS peaked my interest, Astartes hooked me into the universe.
Cool vid
You would have a lot more Fan animations like Astartes, but Games Workshop threatened to sue any fans who made unauthorized 40K fan animations.
I have never seen such a horrible reaction from a company to its fans who love the work. Threatening to sue and legal action for fan animations is so awful.
GW doesn't want to be shown up by the community they treat so poorly.
Warp frost, a common occurrence in areas where the veil is thin or warp fuckery is underfoot.
Nice
FOR THE EMPEROR 🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
