If Larry David or Jerry Seinfeld ever see this comment I say: I wanted to say thank you for the show and I’ll always have fond memories of it and how it started. Thank you both for all the years of stand up, writing and acting
When Larry said he cried about the 22 episodes, I lost it. I had tears running down my face, (from laughter) imagining him sobbing over getting MORE work.
lol I love Larry. He has the insanely funny thought process of someone with social anxiety. He really does. The idea of more episodes just freaks him out
just watched my first episode so i'm really late getting into seinfeld but after curb your enthusiasm, and this documentary i watched my first show and it really is about nothing and thats what makes it so funny its so real, and really really clever, brilliant show and larry david is amazing
I guess u could say it's like a John Lennon, Paul McCartney type thing. Larry (Lennon) is the genius that wants to push the envelope and do stuff that most ppl will say is crazy at first, and Jerry (McCartney) is sort of the mass appeal balance that makes it work for a mainstream network show
I've never understood why people argue about whether it was Larry or Jerry's show. They obviously needed each other. Jerry is the guy who took a chance on Larry when no one else would. The shows were drawn both from Larry's and Jerry's personal lives and Jerry's standup. When Larry left the show, Jerry took over but has stated that he learned how to run the show from Larry. Definitely the Lennon and McCartney of comedy...
The greatest show ever. I have said many times to my girlfriend "You have to like Seinfeld!!!!! It is really important to me that MY GIRLFRIEND likes Seinfeld!!!!!" After 2 seasons SHE LOVED IT!!!!!! The GREATEST show ever!
@puncho33 But the show never would have taken off to begin with without Larry. The show is all about his life, it had his dark & personal humor, and Jerry balanced all of that out to make a great show. One wasn't any more important than the other.
Hopefully NBC learned a lesson from this show. A couple of comedians had a great idea, formed a great cast all by themselves, and didn't know anything about running a television show. These 2 comedians who never wrote scripts, and never did anything like this before were producers of the worlds best sitcom there ever was. They took a show NBC thought couldn't make it, and turned into something marvelous.
Jerry was able to take it long, but honestly believe, without Larry's quirky self obsessed nature influencing the shows direction, it would have never taken off in the first place.
Seinfeld will hands down be the best Comedy Sitcom I never laughed hard at a show where it's Literally About Nothing! Thank you Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld for making a sitcom that would be a classic and give us many laughs!
larry complains about having to write all the episodes, then when the show is over he goes and does curb your enthusiasm lol (and it also started as a one time special)
larry and jerry wanted the same thing, larry got banned from the meeting because he would probably scream at the nbc ppl but jerry would just go and say the same thing larry wanted in a calm manner
i like how the nbc guy acts like he was excited by the fact the show was different from every other show, then talks about all ways he was trying to make it more like every other show
I think the fact that none of the people involved (tom cherones, larry charles, that other fella with the silver hair, larry and jerry) had ever done a sitcom before was the determining factor in seinfeld's originality
It’s funny…when this documentary first came out, hardly anyone cared about Larry David. Curb Your Enthusiasm was still kind of a cult show and about .2% of the rest of the world knew him as “the guy who ran Seinfeld…I heard that he’s got a pretty good show on HBO now”. Hell, Curb had already been on for 2 seasons before I saw a single episode, myself. In 2022, you could make a sound argument that Larry is as beloved a cultural icon as Jerry…and in fact, probably even more-so for the younger generations who never saw Seinfeld at its height.
P.S. I recall now that in one episode Kramer specifically tells Elaine he’s not Jewish and an episode where George’s Father is identified as a Knights of Columbus, an organization where one must be Catholic. Therefore, of the four main characters, only Jerry is Jewish.
@litwriter100, technically not true, George's mother in one episode mentions how she will not ride in a german car, implying memories of the Holocaust, therefore George is at least half-Jewish
@hubertcp Thank you and good point. George as half-Jewish makes sense. I am, of course, dismissing the ethnicity of the actors as irrelevant as we are only speaking of the characters in this context. The character of George’s mother does seem to be played as if she were Jewish. Also, George’s boyhood friendship with Jerry would seem to be another indicator.
To me they were still funny, but not in the same way as the previous seasons, and not as much. There were some interesting ideas explored, but also a lot more 'slapstick' and 'traditional' situation comedy. There are still some GREAT standalone episodes within that period.
@litwriter100 I think they didn't necessarily mean the characters, but the writing: the Yiddishisms, the neurosis, the references. Also Jason Alexander says he did a Woody Allen impersonation in audition - Woody Allen is held up as exemplary of New York Jewish humour. That suggests the kind of precedent they were following, and why executives might pick it out as a discernible quality/influence. Or maybe they were just translating 'too smart and specific' into something anti-Semitic.
Why are you still talking? You lost when you removed your comment. "If Seinfeld was an athlete, it wouldn't have been an analogy." That was supposedly your rebuttal. I rest my case.
Right, so Jerry Seinfeld's an athlete now? That analogy was absolutely abhorrent, I wish I hadn't read it. You could have not even replied to my comment and it would have held the same value.
What did the execs mean by the show being “too Jewish”? In one episode, Elaine is specifically identified as not being Jewish. George is an insincere convert to “Latvian Orthodox,” we assume from Catholicism since he’s Italian. I don’t recall Kramer’s religious background ever being mentioned. So why too Jewish? Because Jerry is? One out of four?
Larry is the reason the show exists. Jerry's just a puppet. Granted, the show wouldn't have been what it was without the exact dynamic it had, but Larry is why Seinfeld was such a funny show.
There's a reason Curb Your Enthusiasm with Larry David is a long running series, and one of the most critically successful comedies on television in the last decade and Jerry Seinfeld hasn't done virtually anything else that's been remotely successful since Seinfeld.
OMG I would love to see Larry crying like a baby when he heard he had to write another 22 episodes LOL. The episode about Jerry and Elaine wanting to add sex to their relationship is sooo Woody Allen btw
You know that strange sense of disappointment and disgust when you say the word "Friends" or "Dharma and Greg"? Imagine if "Seinfeld" carried that also, not a sense of class and satisfaction.
The key to Seinfeld's success was the integrations of parallel story lines that collide at the end. Other sitcoms don't bother with this important characteristic. That's why they (mostly) all suck.
Classic George moment. I love how wrapped in Larry's personality he truly turned out to be.
That was a great documentary, many thanks to the uploader! You are truly master of your domain!
lol I love Larry. He has the insanely funny thought process of someone with social anxiety. He really does. The idea of more episodes just freaks him out
Watching George come up with and pitch the show is even funnier now. Larry David is a truly unique person.
The best show ever ❤ gave us so much joy and happiness 😊
just watched my first episode so i'm really late getting into seinfeld but after curb your enthusiasm, and this documentary i watched my first show and it really is about nothing and thats what makes it so funny its so real, and really really clever, brilliant show and larry david is amazing
two guys with a dream.
anything can happen, and im glad it did.
thank you for posting.

That's a brilliant observation. In fact, I wanna use it to make myself look smart if you allow me... ^^
Very insightful

I love how Larry David is constantly expecting failure and gets increasingly frustrated the more successful the show becomes.
The Chinese restaurant episode was one of best shows of the series…it’s funny and stuff happens in the show
Larry David is insane - a complete one-off and pure brilliance! The fact that he cried is fucking hilarious!
i think i have an unhealthy adoration for larry david
greatest show ever

The dream of every comedy writer is to be told you’re getting another season to do your show.
And it’s the worst thing Larry David could imagine! 😂
Last part of an awesome documentary, with 0 dislikes. . .KEEP IT THAT WAY!
Jerry was able to take it long, but honestly believe, without Larry's quirky self obsessed nature influencing the shows direction, it would have never taken off in the first place.
Jerry's doing stand-up and still making $100 million a year. I think he's just content with doing what he loves to do.
I like how Jerry's apartment goes from being on the street to being in a hallway.
Seinfeld will hands down be the best Comedy Sitcom I never laughed hard at a show where it's Literally About Nothing! Thank you Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld for making a sitcom that would be a classic and give us many laughs!

is that Columbus avenue?
larry and jerry wanted the same thing, larry got banned from the meeting because he would probably scream at the nbc ppl but jerry would just go and say the same thing larry wanted in a calm manner

Awesome. Thanks for the upload.
I think the fact that none of the people involved (tom cherones, larry charles, that other fella with the silver hair, larry and jerry) had ever done a sitcom before was the determining factor in seinfeld's originality
jerry is the reason the show went that long, larry was a hot head....

Larry didn't want Seinfeld to be successful because they followed Cheers, but he would go on to cast Ted Danson on Curbed.
Love Larry David's 22 episode meltdown -- it's almost as good as his 13 episode meltdown!
@puncho33 its like a table man, you kick one of the legs out, you cant have a meal
LOL...HBO was around LONG before Seinfeld started. Good thought though.
Neither Jerry nor Larry were solely responsible for the shows success. People need to stop dealing with absolutes.
@litwriter100, technically not true, George's mother in one episode mentions how she will not ride in a german car, implying memories of the Holocaust, therefore George is at least half-Jewish
Gotta love the Sein!
not was... IS a genius.

@skymackerel Yes, I think you are right here. The writing does seem to reflect historical NYC Jewish influences. Thanks.
They were a team. It wouldn't have worked without either of them. It's the lungs and hart story.
well put sir
Revolutionary? :)
@puncho33 larry provides material, jerry knows how to put it to good use
I wanna see moreeee

calm down bud. whats your problem?
Right, so Jerry Seinfeld's an athlete now? That analogy was absolutely abhorrent, I wish I hadn't read it.

@puncho33 that is such bull, that really is total total bull im sorry.
I thought I had went deaf because of how low the audio is on this video...
Seinfeld is the greatest. Absolutely unrelenting 2 guys with idea. The best.

They don't mean characters that are too Jewish, they mean sensibilities that are too Jewish, in the dialogue and story lines, for example.
amen!!!
@DRiPPz6800
and frank costanza too
The chart worked.
Sounds like a good plot to an episode of Curb lmao
Great sitcom -Seinfeld is awesome! @kittywaymo

daa
Frasier is still my fav. sitcom
Those Seinfeld bumpers were so corny back then
null
lmaoooo the more successful the show gets the more stressed larry david gets haha
AMEN! ALso most sitcoms are all about romantic relationships..cliche shit.
They're a team. Jerry is an awful actor, Larry is a hot head. But the two together is a winner.
@puncho33 Yeah, but Larry is the reason the show was any good
