It bugs me whenever I hear ignorant complaints about players supposedly not speaking English. We’re talking about very young guys, often teenagers, who are trying to navigate a new country, learn to live on their own for the first time as adults, AND simultaneously competing against the very best in the world-just to keep their jobs. And, as ex-MLBer Trevor Plouffe has eloquently said, they DO learn English. They communicate freely with teammates and navigate life in the US, but understandably aren’t always comfortable giving on-the-record answers to press questions in their second language. It’s a bit different for guys like Lindor who came here as children (though that comes with its own traumas); or like José Bautista, who grew up middle-class in DR, and who started learning English very early, in anticipation of eventually going to college. In recent years, a few American players, like Brian Dozier and Nate McLouth have gone the extra mile to support their Latin teammates by learning Spanish (I don’t speak Spanish, but apparently McLouth’s Dominican Spanish is impressively authentic-sounding). Then, there are the Asian players, whose native languages have basically nothing in common with English. Unlike their Latin counterparts, players from Asia typically don’t have bilingual teammates who can help them improve their English, which increases their isolation. And though there are exceptions, like Shin-Soo Choo, most players from Asia (particularly those from Japan) are signed to major-league contracts, rather then as teenage prospects bound for the minors, so there’s no ramp-up at all; the pressure is on, from the jump. People ignorantly knocked Ichiro throughout his career for supposedly not speaking English, even though it was utter nonsense: everyone in MLB was very familiar with the hilarious and profane pre-game pep talks he would give annually to his AL teammates the All-Star Game. It made me really happy when he shut up the haters by delivering his farewell speech in fluent English to the fans in Seattle. OK, rant over.

If u live in the United States for over 10 years u should be able to learn the language. Its hard but all it takes is practice. Literally every American that moves to another country learns that language

@@Jake0666 First of all, there’s a big difference between simply learning a language well enough to communicate in everyday life, and learning it well enough to be comfortable publicly answering on-the-record questions from the press-something many, if not most people are afraid to do in their _native_ languages. Second, your last statement isn’t even remotely true. While most learn a few phrases to get by, only about 20-25% of Americans who move abroad ever become fluent in the local language (feel free to look it up; I found multiple sources in a few seconds). In fact, Americans who move abroad are slightly _less_ likely to become fluent in the local language than expats from other countries. As a side note, I find it amusing to note who gets called an “expat” versus who is given the much more sociopolitically loaded label of “immigrant,” despite the fact that many so-called “expats” never return to their home countries.

@@IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar if u live in a country that doesn’t speak ur OWN language u should learn AND be able to speak that language. It’s not hard to put work in so u can eventually answer questions from reporters. Most of these players aren’t even learning the language and just get by using an interpreter. If u practice u can do anything. Stop making excuses for these players

Imagine what an international might feel talking to someone that doesn't treat their own countrymen well. When in doubt always play to your strength.
