Can you cover Taylor's debut album or Fearless (sorry I mentioned Revival by Selena Gomez I hadn't gotten to the point where you said before 2010 so I didn't know but maybe you could do a video in the future or something) also I wanna know how you felt about Kim Petras's most recent album (I don't know if I can put the name on here) I personally didn't like it very much I thought it was a slight improvement on the first "volume" of it but I'm not a huge fan of that either
I might honestly do Revival as a video or maybe on the pod! It was a very good pop era and Rare would have smashed if it came just 2 years or so after!
@@EljohnMacaranas it's one of my favorite albums of all time I've been obsessed with Selena since A Year Without Rain came out and I love Selena so much to this day and I'm loving her new song "Love On" the Lyric "This doesn't have to be some sort of mathematical equation, slip off your jeans slide in the sheets screaming yes in quotations" gagged me I literally started laughing so hard and the way she said Steak Tar Tar made it sound so dramatic and I laughed at that too and It's a very good song
I think Dua’s biggest mistake so far is what you said: living and dying by the song. It’s been like almost 5 years now and I don’t really know her beyond the fact she’s talented and goes on vacation like a lot!
@noneapplicable1327 I’d agree because social media has sorta killed the traditional press junket and having those iconic TV interviews and documentaries and needing to be larger than life in day to day life
Dua definitely wanted to make a hit album. Her team confirmed they want her to be the biggest artist in the world, and have 2billion+ streams on every song
This is my opinion.. but at the moment shes a radio artist, she makes songs for top 40 radio. She has a lack of personality in her music and fanbase isn't solid yet. I know dua lipa.. but i don't know her, she hasnt given anything to be invested in her.
I feel like she hasn’t had a public story to connect us to her. Like no controversy, no big PR relationship, which on one hand feels p refreshing but also like not personal. It almost feels like a coworkers like relationship, you see em all the time but know nothing. Which again, no one owes anyone anything but like see Taylor and Ari and even Bey, like we’ve seen their ups and downs and it humanized them a lot.
Dua is such a reserved individual, aloof, agreeable, always playing it cool type. Shes so risk avert. Its all very surface level, serviceable and professional. On one hand I like it because I aspire to be like that in my work life. But for a pop star and for my entertainment, I need more. All the greats have that ability to fully commit to their work and display such passion to song or performance and stamping a new era of their catalogue. And the output feels personable, you can connect with the person who happens to be an outstanding artist or feel like you can live through them. Dua just doesnt do that for me. She keeps herself at a lengthy distance from her music, her fans and the audience.
That’s actually a very interesting take. I think the whole professionalism does add this distance to her. While someone Charli XCX is not quite a direct commercial peer, her lack thereof of that cool distance is why she has this rabid loyal base of Angels that are always there. I often times wonder if mainstream artists who lack that cult of personality wish they had it. It comes with its own troubles and issues ofc but I’ve always wondered about how that affects an artist both artistically and personally.
Gasp! The title of this podcast has me shooketh. Honestly I wasn't a confirmed Dula Peep stan until her participation in the Barbie soundtrack, and now Training Season has me in it to win it! I have confidence that Dua is sticking around for the long haul. She just has that staying power energy, even if it doesn't reach the heights of our voracious expectations. another great video eljohn!!
Thank you for tuning in! And honestly her last record made me a huge fan so it kinda shocked me this current era coming back from that excellent Barbie track and Training Season now isn’t quite smashing the way I thought it would last year!
@Macaranas There's a lot to be hyped about right now in the Pop landscape, it's inevitable that some artists won't be reaching quite as high as we wish them to. Overall I think it's safe to say that Dua has cemented herself in the pop landscape for many years to come - even if DL3 isn't as successful, I don't think it's a nail, and there certainly is no coffin to be putting it in. PS I will never watch Madame Web even with your glowing Camp Stamp! 🤣
@@kylereddellThis year is gonna be a high point for releases in a way 2014 was for that decade! I’m just hoping there isn’t a crash like 2017-18’s pop drought
I love Dua's new era so much Houdini has already crept up into my top 30 most streamed songs of ALL TIME on Spotify and Training Season is my most steamed song of 2024 so far. Also Dua's fans don't have a fandom name she just calls us her loves
In the area I live I hear Houdini all the time on the radio it's played at least once every 30 minutes and I still haven't heard Training Season yet sadly
The video thumbnail is sending me because for like 10 seconds I was trying to figure out how Dua's album roll out is being affected by the Avatar adaptation and Madam Web 😭 (her web would connect them all, surely) Anyway, I'm actually more excited for this album than I was for Future Nostalgia. The sound might not be for everyone, but it is for me!
To me Dua Lipa 3 feels like a new debut record. She’s been out of the spotlight for so long then she changed all the thumbnails for everything on RUclips and all her public profile pictures to reflect the new era, she came back with dance the night, and then finally followed by houndni which was the actual start of the era. On top of that the singles don’t feel like there matching with what every critic has said about this being the British version of Beyoncé’s lemonade. Dua’s vocals are great this era but I feel like weve lived in it for so long even before the music was out. Also as you said no narrative structure was understood to be in Houdini. The marketing for this album feels like she’s just trying to prove she’s an artist worth debuting and this is her third album, I think had the marketing come closer to when the music was actually starting to get dropped everything would be clicking more
I really hope that Lemonade comparison comes together like I feel like once all the pieces come together I’ll definitely reevaluate but right now it feels so scattered.
I rlly rlly hope she is able to pull through with the album. I personally love houdini, but i agree its not strong enough for a lead. I think she also needs to set a proper theme and aesthetic for this album, bc so far thats lacking tbh. Training season is catchy but also not my fav. I have hope that she is keeping the better tracks for the album. So maybe there will be at least one big song on the record with time, like levitating.
I believe she will have a big late era smash, the record has to have a few hidden gems they can pull out with a remix or perhaps a solid visual. Houdini was a nice teaser but having it be presented as a lead was bit odd especially knowing what we know now about the potential scrapped Training Season video
I wil STILL defend "Houdini" no matter the commercial performance. It's the type of song i wanted her to do for a long time and I'm not disappointed, easily her best song of her career and the Danny L Harle remix of it sends me into another dimension, I swear. I agree that it wasn't the best single choice as it might've been too niche and European for the Billboard charts but I'd also like to point out that "Dance The Night" was still doing very well on the charts when "Houdini" dropped, compared to 2019 that was very lowkey for Dua. Furthermore, DL3 while different from Future Nostalgia is not DRASTICALLY different the way DL2 was to her self-titled. Thou now that "Dance To Night" finally fell off the charts, "Houdini" might actually return to top 20 next week so maybe the success in America is afoot? Or maybe "Training Season" will become a smash? Who knows? That song didn't do as much for me but it is a grower! I believe that DL3 will be a great album (I mean, it's produced by Danny fresh off of Desire, ofc I'll eat it up). Despite how "Houdini" is clearly for the gays my beloved homophobic Poland STILL busted it into number 1 on the radio for a one week of reprieve from the insufferable cheap knock-off of "Stumblin' In" that is dominating for 6 weeks already! As for vintage albums... I'd like to also propose sth European: Robyn's self-titled from 2005. I don't know much about the era but I love the songs and I find it interesting how it got a "renewed promotion(?)" the new look, music videos, etc. and how it was her first independent project. Also, what are your thoughs on Charli's Brat era so far? The cover album is so unserious lmao. Von Dutch is such an exciting teaser and the mv is literally mother. Have a good day, loving this podcast format so much
Aaaah loved your comment. Re: Dua, I think your points stand pretty well. Re: vintage, i’m so covering Robyn at one point! Re: Charli… Brat is gonna be one of her best eras like I have faith in the music and concept, this is gonna be the spiritual success to both XCX World and True Romance
I think Dua's new music so far is a low key masterpiece. Her, Kevin Parker and Danny L Harle together are honestly a holy trinity. It's something that I think people who don't generally enjoy pop music can vibe with. I really hope it gets the attention it deserves.
You know what’s funny? I became a fan of Dua in 2017 when I heard her debut album. I was actually disappointed when she put out Future Nostalgia because it didn’t sound close to her debut. I guess I’m one of the very few people who likes her debut album. I think her problem right now is not only that her new singles sound similar to her FN era, but that there’s a lot of competition. Beyoncé, Taylor, Ariana….. the list is so long that I’m worried even for Normani. I’m still looking forward to her new album. Can’t wait.
I think this year is way too stacked but 2020 was too but tbh I think it’s the visual aesthetic too like it’s this brutalist anti FN look even if the music sounds similar
I think the problem with these two singles and the era so far, is not that they're bad songs at all; but it just doesn't seem thought out. There's no defined concept and sonically it's very similar to future nostalgia
I think Dua could’ve pushed Training Season a bit more by announcing her album’s name and release date the day before or a few days before the single came out. I wonder if she’s holding off to try and get past Ariana and Beyoncé’s album drops in March, cuz it definitely seems like the album should have been coming within a few weeks.
I think it makes sense to draw it out because Ari, Bey, and I guess Taylor make an album drop hard. She’s established but those artists each have 7 or so under their belt and are A+ tier
@@EljohnMacaranas yeah it sucks cuz you can tell she had a clear path with this era to somewhat mimic FN, but literally every one of the main pop girls surprise announcing stuff is messing it up.
Dua is starting to fall off slowly, because there is no interest about her outside of her music. It’s really that simple✅ she needs to do some thing actually interesting or controversial, you can’t be popular for long periods of time without being polarizing as well. For people to love you for long periods of time people need to hate you as well✅
@@EljohnMacaranas exactly ✅ she has EVERYTHING else, she just needs to drop the nice girl thing and say something political or do something crazy and get caught by the paparazzi. Especially with the election all she hast to do is say some negative things about Trump aggressively and she will be good✅ it won’t turn off for target demographic either✅
Honestly if she went full on anti-Trump that’d probably work at this point, Perry did it way too early and without a level of conviction that really was felt. I feel like Dua was hoping Argylle was gonna be a hit (she was actually pretty solid for her short moments in it)
To be Frank I think a issue dua have is quite similar to Doja cat which is they are social media pop stars meaning they are hyped up and build on social media as these cultural icons but log off of twitter and tik tok and they are top 40 pop girls which doesn’t mean they are completely unknown outside of social media far from it they are mainstream popular and well known but they haven’t reached the big elitie household name status just yet and you can’t blame it on todays era of streaming and social media bc their peers like Ariana grande, Billie eilish, sza, Olivia roderigo and Megan thee stallion have reached it, some of them like Billie, Megan and sza don’t even make music that’s cater to top 40 radio but have reached that level as if they have. I think why this is happening to dua is bc she haven’t made music that’s distinctively her and she haven’t shown who she is in terms of personality which are must ended in todays standards to being a main pop girl you gotta be musically distinctive, innovative and niche/alternative-esque and be relatable in the vein of a social media influencer/personality. Bc the songs she’s releasing sounds alot like Future Nostalgia B-sides, it could live off the impression that she’s lack personality, range, versatility and individuality, I’m not sure if dua has the chance to pull that off, but we’ll see
I never grasped how much of a crutch social media can be like I agree Dua has made excellent music and has a unique vocal presence but none of the songs feel signature “only Dua Lipa could have done this” the way her peers have
When you said third album curse, I IMMEDIATELY thought of Artpop. I love Artpop so much and am still bummed over the Artpop 10 year anniversary in addition to how it originally wasn't popular. LG7 where are youuuuu For Dua, I have been slightly disappointed myself in this era. I keep subconsciously comparing each song to Future Nostalgia. I feel like the biggest problem for the gp really is like you said; the production isn't quite as mainstream and popular. But my biggest issue is really the melodies of both songs. Compared to songs like Levitating, Physical, and Break My Heart, the melodies are not up to snuff imo. For Training Season, the falsetto prechourus stands out the most while the chorus is just fine and catchy. But for Houdini, I really can't describe what I feel. I don't know if I think the song needed more powerful vocals or what. I LOVE Training Season and had it on repeat, but Houdini is just good and no hate, but it's not special. I am super happy Texas Hold 'Em is doing well even with some radio stations refusing to play it. I am also super excited for Miley's single coming out at Midnight. And Eternal Sunshine is almost here!!! I like how Nonna is the only feature. But I am concerned how it is her shortest. I really wish artists would go back to 3 minute/4 minute songs.
Dua’s melody work on this record seems to be less defined as you said. Like Houdini feels too… loose and fast. Training Day should have leaned on that prechorus and also that fun shifty sound where it feels cat and mouse. Texas Hold Em doing amazing is heartening news, also fuck country radio. Miley’s new single was my fave demo from the Bangerz era I hope her new record if she’s doing one is Pharrell influenced! And omg I’m so antsy for Eternal Sunshine, even if it’s short: I think it’ll be her tightest work to date.
this new Dua eras giving aloof, rude, Lazy, try hard to be cool girl & bland visual. giving me and icks of a Timothée Chalamet effect. Want to love it but it a No for me so far.
I really hope that Dua doesn't go about the album flopping (If it does , hopefully not) the way Katy did , trying to capture what was lost and end up re-haching the same idea but diluting them. This era is shaping up to be her best, Houdini and Training Season are great singles. Also, the psychedelic sound of kevin parker and danny is so good you just know the vibe she was going for but sadly It's not appealing to the gays and GP who listen to mostly mainstream pop girlies with the same production over and over again. For the review : Vespertine or Homogenic by Bjork
Bjork is getting a series at some point when the releases die down! But yeah I agree on all your Dua points bc IDK if retreating back to FN or even DL1 is a good move
Houdini is objectively bad and still the algorhytm and playlisting convinced people otherwise. It will depend on how much money her company spends. Just like all pop plastic products people eat up
I honestly have to agree with you. I really like her work, but I feel like a lot of her music is just meant for the radio, and not necessarily because It’s shallow, but literally because every single she puts out is immediately sent to every radio possible and super promoted (or at least in Europe), without really giving the consumer the possibility to dictate whether the song is worthy of that place or not. It’s so crazy to me because even monumental artists have their fails in their career and people who are not fans can easily miss some work that they have put out. However, this never happens with Dua Lipa, which is great but also boring at some point. I really hope she’s gonna go further and explore more, without having the fear of showing vulnerability in her craft because I think it has become such a precious thing nowadays.
Honestly, these 2 singles aren't very interesting. You really hear Kevin Parker's influence on these songs and not in a good way. The best Tame Impala stuff is dense and hypnotic and immersive and you can hear Dua heading in that direction with these songs without fully committing because she still seems to want to make pop music which has the songs end up sounding like auditory wall paper. I hope Danny L Harle's influence is stronger on the other songs. It would be cool if she took some cues from Danny and made bolder music (a la Caroline Polachek) and had the other co-producers sand off some of the... Jock Jams-esque parts of Danny's music to fit Dua better.
Danny L Harle’s influence I agree feels a little watered down in the sense he’s not bringing that scope Caroline Polachek had with Desire. I do think the proper album will be stronger but as of now these single choices are just not working
Lack of promo and probably releasing before a stacked March… I think she’ll swing again late April or early May and regain momentum (maybe even try pushing TS again)
I thought the Avatar thing was ok, thought it felt too short and agreed Sokka’s actor didn’t have that sibling bond with Katara 😭 Zuko was perfectly cast like omg they did that so well, i think s2 will be better bc Earth was a better story overall
Yes Dua is in trouble. Her last two singles were the bes of her career and they basically wenty nowhere. 11 for Houdini is pretty weak and she promoted the hell out of it
I think Houdini and Training Season are good songs, but they don’t hit as hard as a lot of the songs on Future Nostalgia did. I’m still hoping that the best music from the new album hasn’t been released yet.
I have a feeling the best off the record is still being produced or finalized. There’s an incompleteness to Houdini that still bothers me from liking it as much as I wanted to.
Such a shame, i love Houdini and gets me excited for Dua's new era, but yes, charts and data do play a part. I guess watch this space! Loved this podcast, instant subscriber! ❤
Again comparisons with madonna and confessions? Maybe its like a cheap/dead/slow version of madonna’s masterpiece. Lets see how it is when its released. I dont have any hopes. Dua’s music is so generic and has not enough energy for my taste. Some good songs but overall just too mainstream and normal.
I think Dua has the capacity to be dynamic but she’s too concerned about being “cool” like Madonna has this need to be seen and witnessed that really sets her apart even now.
@@EljohnMacaranas I like artists with more DRIVE/ ARTISTIC FREEDOM and a MESSAGE. Or at least capacity to be introspective and touching. I like Madonna, Michael Jackson.. Depeche Mode. In the basic pop realm I think Kesha as a writer is for me the best pop girl. I love all of her lyrics even the dumb ones, she radiates personality. Thats something you cant train or buy. Sorry for the long replay. I should start my own channel 😇🤣 Regards 😋
Yes of course, because Madonna's last albums changed the history of music? She invented new melodies and sounds? And lyrics as deep as Bitch???? Madonna has always made the pop that has been fashionable to sell. If R&B was in fashion then she released an album with that sound, if EDM was in fashion then another album like that, if Bjork was in fashion then she released a similar album, if Phrarell was in fashion then let her make an album for me. Madonna has only made pop by following the trends, nothing artistic or original, sometimes even arriving late to the trends. Many still believe that she is an artist when she is just a great business woman who knew how to take advantage of opportunities. Putting maluma and making reguetton or timberlake and making the timbaland sound is the most generic thing there is.
I love future nostalgia but this new era hasn't grabbed ny attention in the same way. So far the new songs feels as if they've been out for years kinda like Pinks music, it blends in with every other generic single.
Legends Only made a great point that Houdini was being overshadowed still by Dance the Night Away, 2 songs that do not sound similar, and DTNA still being a part of the FN coding. Her still doing promo for it being a part of the Oscars and how long Barbie has been moving, wondering if she should have pushed out the singles to the latter half of the year to give people a clear break between the era’s
Riot by Paramore or Songs in the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder or Metamorphosis by Hilary Duff or Cntrl by SZA (because I was late to the getting it train on that one) or Oops I Did It Again by Britney Spears (my very first CD, I'm proud to say)
I think a big gripe I have about DL3 is that I don’t believe her management is stepping up the way they need them too. Don’t Start Now took months to even get traction, which I blame on the holiday season coming through, and then sacrificing every other single release just to get DSN pushed. That’s exactly what’s happening with Houdini but it’s not working as well as last time. Not only that, the sheer amount of waiting and lack of info on the album is not helping the case at all. Obviously Dua must play a role in this but it’s always felt like the U.S. has never been a priority for her or her team so anything that’s flopping they just let it die.
The wild thing about the US part is the states want to love her and do. Not that charts are everything but like the release strategy has been baffling and it will be moreso if we get the record and what should have been the lead is revealed as a deep cut 😭
Dua's songs always start off slow but then they build up to become HUGE hits. Levitating had the same trajectory as Houdini is having right now but the thing is that Levitating was a HUGE hit in the US while Houdini is more global, also the lack of promo this era is messing everything up, like during Future Nostalgia we got performances and some new type of promotion like EVERY WEEK. The first mistake of dua and her label was releasing Houdini SO CLOSE to Christmas, the week that Houdini debuted, many Christmas songs were already in the top spots of the charts and then the fact that they just let the song just SURVIVE on it's own for the next two months with no promotion ??? BIG MISTAKE !!!!! Don't Start Now literally had like 10 performances it's first month while Houdini has only ONE performance in 4 MONTHS 💀 Basically the lack of promo is what sabotaged this era, at least RIGHT NOW she's kinda doing good! We'll see when the album gets released
100% agree with you on Dua this new era is giving flop. Reminds me of When Beyonce went solo and she came out with that song 'you put my love on top'. Flop. It was like elevator music. It was not bad, but she is so hyped up that it was disappointing. I get where she was going with it. She just did not deliver imo. I still miss Destiny's Child. But these performers are at such a high level, that even at their worst they are still pretty good. As for the aesthetics, the red hair sort of reminded me of Rihanna in her red hair era. At first I like 'clown hair wtf!?' but it grew on me. Dua is all about that dark hair. Sometimes she would go blond. But the red was shocking. But now I'm ok with it. Same with Future Nostalgia. At first I thought it was too experimental but it grew on me. I did not like either of the singles. Not the quality I'm used to from her. But it's still pretty good. And the message of she's done training men is great!
I think the hair is also a weird factor too… like Ava Max went red last era which I thought made her look a bit hard to remember (most saw her as blonde like Gaga 2.0) but yeah, I do think this era’s just not clicking either the general public sonically or visually, I think they’re too attached to Disco Dua!
I’m starting to believe the rumor that there was a better bigger video that was temporarily scrapped or being reused for tour visuals. Like this is a dance song 😭
I would like to submit these for vintage album review The Miss education of Lauryn hill- Lauryn Hill Confessions on the dance floor- Madonna Under my skin- Avril Lavigne Let’s Go- Avril Lavigne The best damn thing- Avril Lavigne 9 to 5 and odd jobs- Dolly Parton Jolene- Dolly Parton Hello, Im Dolly- Dolly Parton Just because I’m a woman- Dolly Parton Believe- Cher Living Prof-Cher It’s a man’s world-Cher Prisoner- Cher Good woman- Glaydis Knight Christina Aguilera- Christina Aguilera Stripped- Christina Aguilera
I wasn't sold on houdini, but training season is a bop and it's been on repeat since it dropped, when it comes to the avatar adaptation I am convinced they scrapped sokka's sexism "arc" because they didn't want to be targeted by right wing clickbait outrage podcasts, ignoring that I think we didn't need this remake, I'm wishing they could just make a new new show, but that's too much to ask for apparantly
Training Season has a more catchy melody tbh! And agreed they wanted to un-woke Avatar, but at the very least we are getting an (animated) show about an Earthbending Avatar soon enough
There’s def a huge disconnect between streaming and radio for sure, the charts have recalibrated so much with pure sales being so low barring opening weeks
I think she sorta had a cool post early 2010’s pop thing going on for her debut. I could see her doing pop rock well! But the lean on straight up dance definitely has a lower ceiling than anything on FN
Album ideas for vintage album reviews: LAMB by Gwen Stefani Loose by Nelly Furtado Confessions on a Dance floor/Hard Candy by Madonna Emancipation of Mimi/E=MC² by Mariah (!!!) ITZ/Blackout by Britney
I want to do Blackout as its own video for sure but LAMB seems to be the pick for Episode 4 which tbh imma just talk about how she culturally appropri-ATE
I think the momentum from FN and Dance the Night got lost in the release of Houdini like Training Season would have probably been better served as the lead if they wanted it out there
(For context, I am a huge Love) I have been a Dua stan since 2020 \21 and TBH the singles are too similar to future nostalgia - despite random loves on twitter saying that they are completely different. Also, I don't really like any of the mvs - Houdini is too boring and reminds me of a Blackpink stage on Inkigayo (except those actually have nice costumes and aesthetic) and Traning season should have been more - plus I wanted a proper edm drop
I think this is my favorite era of hers because i love that she has a rocky style now with the red hair and black clothes its sick🤩, love training seasion , i think Houdini is a great song for a lead and the streaming of that song is mind blowing, do i think this is gonna be a flop. No i dont think so. Its not as big as future nostalgia but that doesnt mean its gonna flop, she only has released 2 singles btw😅, but yeah everybody has theirs own opinions😃
Wow you write movies?! That's so fascinating to learn! Me too. 🤩 Look at us kindred spirits! I gotta go back and listen to your last one, I just didn't have time initially but very excited to do so. So glad you're trying out this route 😁 I too enjoyed Argyle. Even with its problems it was fun and sometimes just it being fun should be appreciated. What is the 3rd album curse? OMG SAME! I think it's mostly an aesthetic thing. She'd doing something unexpected visually that's a lot less polished and pristine than usual. She's always had a little bit of an avant-garde edge to her visuals but I think the presentation of it being a lot less hyper feminity coded is doing a bit of unintentional whiplash in the expectations of the public which isn't her fault but is messing with the wiring. It feels terrible to say but even though I know she's played with presenting a little more masc athleisure aesthetic in her early work and even Don't Start Now's video incorporates it, she became massively popular with "classically" femme, colorful, bright world-building. It's gonna be hard to break. She's said that the music will be vastly different but I haven't found that to be true. I mean it does deal with a lot more of a darker palette sonically but that seems akin to her self-titled debut with a Future Nostalgia spin. I think she often forfeits storyline in favor of capturing what it means to feel, be of, or truly want something-- whatever amorphous thing or feeling she's zoned in on. I think the storyline of these songs feel like what it means to tease: tease romantically, tease and toy with the idea of being in a relationship. I do think she's trying hard not to seem like she's trying hard; I know that's a standard over imposed on women, in music and otherwise, but it's bleeding through a lot on here. Maybe she's just trying to relax a bit since there was this high performance quality pressure on Future Nostalgia that she's trying to have a bit of loose, laid back fun in a way that's not so shiny and rigorous this time. I enjoy this music so far.
Looking at the singles, perhaps the point of DL3 isn't to break records, but rather using all the eyes that are on her post future nostalgia, to build an actual fanbase and not just the GP.
I honestly think that’d be better for the longevity of her career, like the critical response is strong and there is a formation of a core fanbase post-Future Nostalgia. I’m still hoping a later single takes off, but again one pro to it not taking off is a less crowded tour!
I think she’s one of the best current artists for sure but I’m just shocked neither DL3 singles (esp with the push they got at the Grammys) are clicking
Love the idea of Vintage album discussions, LOVE ANGEL MUSIC BABY is begging to be discuss !!! such an amazing era and album, still one of my favorites
i'm sorry i don't care about her era flopping or not ... i rly don't care. i'm living for every moment and loving every song. people who enjoy the music will watch . sometimes charts don't matter
I think another aspect is that there isn't a strong visual concept. A memorable aspect was the visuals of future nostalgia- futuristic aesthetic mixed with nostalgic aspects, that matches the pop x nostalgic influences. This needed some kind of visual aesthetic like maybe psychedelic one?
She had some refraction reflection thing going on when she changed the album arts for her old work but she seemed to drop it, I wonder if she’ll bring it back or do a new aesthetic? Either way I do think she’s gonna slink away for this month (Ari and Bey!) and next month is Taylor so May?!
Be sure to let me know what old album you want me to cover for Episode 4! Next week is The Dutchess by Fergie!
Definitely something by Madonna, maybe Confessions on a Dance Floor since you mentioned it!

I know that she dont uphold genocide and occupation, this was enough for me
@@lucas10armondI actually commend her for being one of the few artists actually having a real stance on Gaza.
@noneapplicable1327 I’d agree because social media has sorta killed the traditional press junket and having those iconic TV interviews and documentaries and needing to be larger than life in day to day life
The last part killed me😂 she's always on vacation💀
Dua definitely wanted to make a hit album. Her team confirmed they want her to be the biggest artist in the world, and have 2billion+ streams on every song
Well…
I think this song were suppose to be slow burner. And they Will just be listed for party playlists for a long time
I think most of her songs are meant to be slow burners, DSN took a while to take off, I’d been hoping Houdini would follow a similar timeline
Not me thinking Dakota Johnson was Katy Perry in the thumbnail👀
She should play her in a movie 😭
SAME😭

Omg Loves 😭 that’s gorgeous and also… yah, the songs are good but I’m just personally shocked it’s not clicking and tried to sorta figure out why
In the area I live I hear Houdini all the time on the radio it's played at least once every 30 minutes and I still haven't heard Training Season yet sadly

The video thumbnail is sending me because for like 10 seconds I was trying to figure out how Dua's album roll out is being affected by the Avatar adaptation and Madam Web 😭 (her web would connect them all, surely)
Anyway, I'm actually more excited for this album than I was for Future Nostalgia. The sound might not be for everyone, but it is for me!
Her web does connect them all 😭😭😭
But yeah! I think DL3 is for the dancepop contingent who wanted something a bit more culty!
For the vintage album, definitely Confessions on a Dance Floor or maybe like Rihanna’s Loud even if that’s 2010!
I cannot believe Loud was like 14 years ago… like damn that was the other giant 2010 era besides Teenage Dream
She needs to like promo the hell out of it, when like this crazy month and Taylor’s album drops, like May needs to be her season!
Future Nostalgia had this loose Disco image going on. Like this era has no title even if it has a cohesive sort of sound 😭
X: Describe DL3 in a few words.
Me: It's Future Nostalgia, but without the bright production.
Oooh you nailed it on the head
Dua is starting to fall off slowly, because there is no interest about her outside of her music. It’s really that simple✅ she needs to do some thing actually interesting or controversial, you can’t be popular for long periods of time without being polarizing as well. For people to love you for long periods of time people need to hate you as well✅
I think the most controversial thing she ever did was go on vacation during the pandemic 💀 if I recall correctly
I feel like Dua was hoping Argylle was gonna be a hit (she was actually pretty solid for her short moments in it)
@@EljohnMacaranas exactly✅ you get it☀️ love your videos ☀️💕 glad we could agree
LG7 where are youuuuu
For Dua, I have been slightly disappointed myself in this era.
Not Timmy Chalamet (who sorta won me back with Dune 2 and Wonka very recently)
Just like all pop plastic products people eat up
The issue is even with the push it’s still underperforming… like there’s something really amiss
I wanna ask have you watched the Percy Jackson show? If so could you talk about it in a future podcast?
Oh for sure I have my thoughts bc it was a great show but I’m questioning if Disney has the budget to actually do it 😭
Petition to name Dua’s fanbase “Dula’s Peeps”
At this point, yeah!
I agree! I see my fave artists wait like 7 cycles or so to really experiment or grow and it shouldn’t have to be like that!
After seeing this, it amazes me how successful prism was following Teenage Dream, the biggest pop era
Honestly, it was the strength of TD that helped carry Roar but Dark Horse was truly a next level mini era hit
Dua's Training Season has fallen to 61 after a high of just 26. What is wrong with people??!!
Lack of promo and probably releasing before a stacked March… I think she’ll swing again late April or early May and regain momentum (maybe even try pushing TS again)
Her biggest mistake was waiting this long. The lack of evolution would not have been a big deal if she had released this album even a year earlier.
I hadn’t realized it was 4 or so years ago
I thought the Avatar thing was ok, thought it felt too short and agreed Sokka’s actor didn’t have that sibling bond with Katara 😭 Zuko was perfectly cast like omg they did that so well, i think s2 will be better bc Earth was a better story overall
Zuko’s actor Dallas Liu is well cast like he really embodies the character even the way he walks and some of the way he pronounces the lines.
Yes Dua is in trouble. Her last two singles were the bes of her career and they basically wenty nowhere. 11 for Houdini is pretty weak and she promoted the hell out of it
The video aesthetics are definitely the breaking point based on some comments I read here.
@@EljohnMacaranas Also she seems too accessible these days with all the shorts etc. Pop stars fare the best when they seem a bit allusive
I think Doja is one of the better examples of accessible but also sorta an enigma
9:41 the name should be Lippies …
I know, it’s weird
Lippies would be cute! But too close to Livvies even if Dua was there first!
Such a shame, i love Houdini and gets me excited for Dua's new era, but yes, charts and data do play a part. I guess watch this space! Loved this podcast, instant subscriber! ❤
Thank you so much!
Pink used to really be at the forefront of music and a trendsetter then she sorta stopped around the early 2010s
Honestly that and the March bombs and Taylor in April definitely make it a challenge to launch. It should have launched in the summer of this year.
Omg I’m adding those to my list
Don't Start Now literally had like 10 performances it's first month while Houdini has only ONE performance in 4 MONTHS 💀
Basically the lack of promo is what sabotaged this era, at least RIGHT NOW she's kinda doing good!
We'll see when the album gets released
Training day?🥴
One of my favorite movies by Antoine Fuqua… yes 😉
@@EljohnMacaranas i love all of ur videos! thanks for all of these, keep it up!! ✨
Thank you for tuning in 🩵
I really loved Houdini but training season was kind of forgettable for me but maybe it is a slow burner.
The gym, unfiltered aesthetic sorta contrasts the song’s colorful personality but yeah I think the GP really loved Future Nostalgia’s look a lot
I think the hair is also a weird factor too… like Ava Max went red last era which I thought made her look a bit hard to remember (most saw her as blonde like Gaga 2.0) but yeah, I do think this era’s just not clicking either the general public sonically or visually, I think they’re too attached to Disco Dua!
if the video for Training Season would’ve had any kind of choreo it would have performed better. 😢
I’m starting to believe the rumor that there was a better bigger video that was temporarily scrapped or being reused for tour visuals. Like this is a dance song 😭

Dua's not flopping omg she's actually doing much better that in future nostalgia ????
Lmao how? Houdini hasn’t cracked top 10, Training Season’s done, Illusion is her last shot before just dropping the record.
Houdini is also not even in the top 120 on US Spotify but somehow in the top 10 of US radio airplay. Its being carried by payola but still flopping
There’s def a huge disconnect between streaming and radio for sure, the charts have recalibrated so much with pure sales being so low barring opening weeks
It’s ALL about songwriting. The new singles don’t hold a candle to DSN or Levitating. Everything else - the aesthetics, the dancing…- is just noise
I haven’t looked at credits but did she ditch her FN writers?
@@EljohnMacaranas idk, but clearly the new music isn't as catchy
Both Dua Lipa's new singles are not memorable. Lyrics, music, or instrumentation are not standing out.
I think the visuals especially are the weak point like neither music video screams big budget pop star
To me the reason is that she found her sound too quickly with this 80s style pop and people want something new but nothing else fits her.
I think she sorta had a cool post early 2010’s pop thing going on for her debut. I could see her doing pop rock well! But the lean on straight up dance definitely has a lower ceiling than anything on FN
Why did you keep saying “Training Day”? LMAO haha
I literally doubled down mid recording this at 2 am lol 😭 also the movie title is catchier
Because that’s how lackluster and forgettable the song is ☺️

I agree
Right?! Exactlyyyyy
It's just two singles, hits are yet to come, she's gonna kill it, i feel it
She needs a Levitating size mid album hit like tbh most of FN could have been a single
i think so. her new song other than houdini isnt high on views (I mean Training Season)
I think the momentum from FN and Dance the Night got lost in the release of Houdini like Training Season would have probably been better served as the lead if they wanted it out there
You had me at "vintage"! 😊
It’s gonna be so fun!
(For context, I am a huge Love)
I have been a Dua stan since 2020 \21 and TBH the singles are too similar to future nostalgia - despite random loves on twitter saying that they are completely different. Also, I don't really like any of the mvs - Houdini is too boring and reminds me of a Blackpink stage on Inkigayo (except those actually have nice costumes and aesthetic) and Traning season should have been more - plus I wanted a proper edm drop
might wanna double check how ur pronouncing palatable
lmao it’s not a me video without me mispronouncing something
@@EljohnMacaranas lolol. hazards of putting yourself out there online!
So glad you're trying out this route 😁
I too enjoyed Argyle.
Can you talk about Duffy and rockferry !
Omg Duffy would be fun!
not you saying training day again and again ijbol
Sometimes you have to double down, if it was that amazing: i’d get it right!
Can't wait for the pod!
OMG thanks! Love your IG btw!
9:28 dua's fandom is called loves
Thank you! I heard different names since 2018, kinda a cool name.
the way u kept calling TRAINING SEASON training day not sitting right w my ear like girl
tbh the fact i couldn’t get the name right explains why it dropped 34 spots this week, kinda forgettable without a good visual
Belissima produção..👑💚🔥💯💫💫💫💫
Looking at the singles, perhaps the point of DL3 isn't to break records, but rather using all the eyes that are on her post future nostalgia, to build an actual fanbase and not just the GP.
I honestly think that’d be better for the longevity of her career, like the critical response is strong and there is a formation of a core fanbase post-Future Nostalgia. I’m still hoping a later single takes off, but again one pro to it not taking off is a less crowded tour!
@@EljohnMacaranas Same, now that she knows how to capture Gp attention, building a fanbase is best.
I’m a Katy and Dua Stan and comparing the two in the beginning is crazy
True, Dua has yet to relegate herself to the reality show graveyard
Why do you call it training day and not training season 😂?!
I legit record these at 2 in the morning lmao but also like there’s a movie called that
It's called training season not training day
yeah, I need to not record these at 2 in the morning lol
I would love a deep dive on folie a deux by fall out boy!
OMG wait I need to do that one and FOB in general
Doja and Dua, Longevity Queens 👑
Doja’s insane at getting her songs to climb over time
This gay is disconnected
lol
i love an era where the single keep getting better
I will defend Dua with my life
I think she’s one of the best current artists for sure but I’m just shocked neither DL3 singles (esp with the push they got at the Grammys) are clicking
Love the idea of Vintage album discussions, LOVE ANGEL MUSIC BABY is begging to be discuss !!! such an amazing era and album, still one of my favorites
You won! That’s my pick! Congrats!
@@EljohnMacaranasYAS!!!
Oh Dua DEFFO wants this era to be big lol...her team set her up by saying they want her to be the most streamed female artist in the world😭😭
Well, they’re not doing the best they can 😭
Old album: Teenage Dream 🩷
Maybe tbh! I did do a sorta recap video awhile back but that was years ago!
i'm sorry i don't care about her era flopping or not ... i rly don't care. i'm living for every moment and loving every song. people who enjoy the music will watch . sometimes charts don't matter
3:08 Training day 😭😭😭
The sleep deprivation and lack of memorability got to me lmao
Dua’s 3 songs in billboard top 50 🤷🏾♂️
Training Season’s like 61 this week
@@EljohnMacaranas oops lmao
