    I feel the aesthetic and the way it was promoted was the albums demise, I honestly don’t think anything from this album will specifically rise but it also won’t hinder Duas career as she’s just come off 2 back to back global smash hit albums, she has room to flop in a sense, but she will have all eyes on her for her next record, it’ll really show if she’s going to hold that longevity.

    She set herself up by saying she was going to explore 70s psychedelia on the album because now people are going to listen and be disappointed... they also set her up by saying that they want this era to make her the biggest pop star in the world and the fact that it's also following an album as good as future nostalgia really doesn't help either 😬

    I’m gonna be very honest here. I don’t know how well this album is gonna perform here in America, especially given the fact that none of the singles have really caught on with the general public. And the buzz/hype for this album was nonexistent to the point were you almost didn’t know that Dua was releasing her next album. I fear that Dua’s cool girl image may come back to bite her and that she might be venturing into Katy Perry territory where the fans might only support her, as long as she continues to make hits cuz she doesn’t really have a solid fan base

    • @EljohnMacaranas
      @EljohnMacaranas  Месяц назад +37

      I agree she is risking Katy Perry syndrome, but I do think she does have the sort of look or charisma to try and do screen roles or venture back into modeling. The lack of urgency or must-listen for this record is its biggest weakness, it’s not a hit record for sure.

    My key issue with this record is: Incoherence.
    1. Houdini and TS are the only songs on the album that truly fit the psychedelic sound that she had teased the album to be. Every other song sounds like a FN reject.
    2. Much of this record felt minimalist and underproduced, so to speak. Considering behemoths like kevin parker and danny l harle were on the roster, I expected a bombastic record and this felt very lukewarm.
    3. Songwriting was very inane. Strong somewhere, bad elsewhere.
    4. Also, the title, album cover and overall sunny theme, feels quite incoherent with the promised dark psychelic sound.
    5. Also, she set herself up with the title 'radical optimism', cause that again makes me expect the production to be punchy and energetic, and what we got instead was quite the opposite
    6. Also, little to no promo for the record set her up for disappointing numbers. Ideally, this should've been released in feb during the grammy week after that amazing performance.

    • @EljohnMacaranas
      @EljohnMacaranas  Месяц назад +6

      I think she pivoted sometime in February and decided to just have this be a sleeper era. Whatever original vision of the album likely got smothered by label worries, her team (now managed by her dad) being out of their depth, and album bombs giving too much competition.

    I think the problem was she focused her energy in promoting "Dance The Night" in the Oscar season than promoting Houdini back in Nov 2023. She only performed Houdini in Feb 2024 which is too late, I think. Im not worried with Dua Lipa's career at this point because its really hard to follow an album like Future Nostalgia, just look at The Weekend with After Hours/Dawn FM. I think DL4 is the real gauge for her career. Radical Optimism for me is the inevitable slump after her fantastic Future Nostalgia.

    • @EljohnMacaranas
      @EljohnMacaranas  Месяц назад +2

      To be fair, she really wanted that Oscar/Grammy nom for DTN but agreed, Houdini was pretty much neglected. Tbh, I think if she’s smart she won’t “Witness” herself with DL4.

CRIMINALLY short album, i replayed it 4 times on a flight from atlanta to NYC. first time i got to How Long in the tracklist, i had goosebumps. standout standout standOUT for me, absolutely love it. i honestly like how this album feels like a nice lil setup for the summer, a truly sunny and sweet album to carry with us, without the pressure of it being a mega album that's attempting to do more than it ought to. it feels like... a safe respite... i guess like a tiny vacation, lol. when thinking about Future Nostalgia's success, yes, the initial album release went super well, but the extended moonlight edition gave it that commercial momentum to keep the spotlight. i could see an extended version of Radical Optimism giving it a second chance at life

      @@EljohnMacaranas it feels like it faces the same issues Troye Sivans new album does where it is filled with a bunch of songs that don’t belong on the album but are put there because the artist didn’t have anything else up to standards to put on due to time constraints.
      Even with his album the singles set the album up to go in a certain direction but once the album is dropped it’s like you’ve just been scammed because the rest of the album is entirely filled out with songs that completely break the cohesion of the era to reach a minimum track limit when it could of easily been an EP which would of given them more time to finish producing the songs and working on the vocals.
      A deluxe won’t do much but make the album more muddier and unclear as there was never really a direct vision for the album just like Troyes. Unfinished and uninspired must be the category of pop albums at the moment.

    Yeah this album is the epitome of cute chill summer bops. the equivalent of miley's summer vacation album. There's no obvious hits besides the singles but in my personal opinion this album is mostly made of background type of music. She should have never presented it as a dark psychedelic rave album, the only touches of that is within... what.. houdini? definitely not presented in the right way.
    Like what was really the point of her wearing all black this era and dying her hair red when the album cover and themes aligns with a blue and summery type of theme. Her creative vision was not well executed.
    And yeah the majority of the songs were very chill. Honestly if I wanted chill summer bops I’d just listen to Miley’s album cause I feel like her vocals are a bit better.
    Still my favorite on this album are ALL of the singles in the order of which it was released. My favorite being Houdini . And I like deeper cuts like “Falling Forever” and “Whatcha Doing”. The rest for me are meh, I’ll listen though though cause I like playing an album fully through. However I will say that I can’t stand the song “These Walls”

    The lead single should've been Training Season ONLY if it was produced better with the live arrangement she does and that perfect last-chorus breakdown that she has in the London session right at 3:24. I will always prefer this live version of the song over the final for this reason. Then we got a perfect start to the era, and with a better video obviously too...
    Then the second single would be the vulnerable These Walls which would've been absolutely PERFECT for adult contemporary and pop radio over the winter. The dancing can wait Dua. Imagine the video for this one being ethereal but with the Dua touch, like Hallucinate's animated video come to life. Perfect vulnerable single choice in my opinion.
    Then the album comes out and Houdini is the fun track about dipping out. Perfect for a later single choice, which is proven with the numbers it's already gotten. If it had even the same visual it had gotten that would've been just fine, it's a fun pop song that would've become a fan favorite regardless but if it had waited I think the perception of it would've been much better. Then again though, not a big fan of the Dm scale so either way it wouldn't have impacted me XD
    Fourth single choice POTENTILLY Illusion, but honestly it as a single choice just doesn't feel right for some reason. It doesn't feel like the album. Idk.
    Forth/Fifth single slot can easily be given to Falling Forever or Whatcha Doing for the perfect crowd pleasing choruses for tour.
    This era is everything, but could be more for sure. The album as a whole is perfect regardless!

Its very very watered down and reductive to what hes capable of bringing as a creative and producer and what hes already delivered through his career. And then theres nothing about the album thats distinctly 'Dua' from a storytelling and songwriting POV. I hear her voice but I dont connect with this person thats singing. Theres no concepts, themes, stories that are interrogated or sincerely communicated through the music. Ultimately its just another one of those serviceable middle of the road vague pop albums from another female artist - but with a warped stylistic touch of Kevin Parker. This album is not bad. It has a few great tracks, such as "End of an Era" and the closing "Happy for You" (the latter being my personal favorite). But it does suffer from being too short, even by pop album standards and having a general lack of diversity in musicality, especially given the team involved.
    Dua has mentioned several times in interviews that she's dance-focused and as such, I didn't expect some avant-garde pop or anything like that, but where FN was a jam-packed magazine full of bangers one after the other, this one somewhat fails to live up to the expectations.
    Dua's debut album was way more experimental and allowed us to have songs like "Thinking 'bout You", which is an underrated jam IMO and "No Goodbyes" , which is much more sober and somber in tone and really brings out qualities that we rarely see from her.
    I wish Dua will step out a little bit of that mind set of must-create uplifting, easy to process lyrical dance numbers and have it in the back of her mind that she can also excite her listeners in ways that venture out of the dance territory

      I think this album was somewhat of a rejection of just being a dance artist. She clearly still has it but there was a more eclectic vibe to the record.

      @@EljohnMacaranas Appreciate your comment. It's not a hyperpop album or anything, but almost every song in this album is made for the dance floor or beach party, whatever (maybe save for "Anything for Love"). That's a dance album in my book. What I meant was that she could (and I still hope she will) sometimes reach out to more emotional, deep contemplative songs that aren't necessarily danceable and usually lay out of her comfort zone. She has done it in the past, I'm positive she can do it in the future and I hope she decides to one day

      It did come to my mind now, that there could still be some such tracks that she's been keeping for the deluxe version, whenever that might come out

    Does anyone else has issues, with listening to the production?... idk, illusion and training season just... hurt my ears. I like them as songs, but her voice is just too sharp for me. I had to skip so many songs, because they gave me a headache. Is it just me?

    I think they released the album to long after 3 singles the wait was to long the anticipation got lost… normally 1 single gets released then shortly after the album drops it’s gives you a little taste and desire to buy the album, I think people are starting to feel like she is a one trick pony 3 singles had the same vibe. I still like her music and the album but lost interest as had to wait to long.

    I wonder if the album was so delayed because of fear of second album syndrome or in this case third? She lost a lot by lettings things fizzle. It seems Dua may be regulated to Europe, much like Kylie Minogue has been, never hitting in the States again. This strategy of hearing almost half the album so long before the actual release doesn't seem to work. The album becomes a non-event.

      I think there’s definitely a hesitancy on this record and sort of a vulnerability. Going too far into dancepop can sort of be a death knell.

      Sort of this electronic vibe that’s more circular and polished than say classic American sounds. It’s hard to pin it, think ABBA!
